Untitled Photograph [C.P.R. Picnic at Rogers Pass]

Rogers Pass - [circa 1888]. () Near fine. Original albumen photograph. 11 X 18 CM image affixed to 13 X 21.5 plain brown card with rounded corners (card is light grey on back). Image shows a couple of spots of light soiling and some discolouration nearer edges. Corners of card are a little worn. Slight bow to card with some soiling on back. This exact image is included in the book "Snow War: an Illustrated History of Rogers Pass, Glacier National Park, B.C." Edited by John S. Marsh (taken from the Provincial Archives of British Columbia). The book describes this photograph as being taking during the brief summer recreational period of the area (as opposed to it's threatening winters). The group shown traveled from Donald to the Rogers Pass Summit for a picnic (this was the only flat spot for miles). The highlight of the day was dancing upin the roof of the 17 shed. The man third to the right in the back row (standing atop the train) is Thomas Kilpatrick, superintendent of the subdivision for many years. The train shows is Locomotive No. 401 which has a 2-8-0 wheel arrangement. It was built in 1886 by the Canadian Pacific New Shops in Montreal. The train served until 1922. Others shown in the photograph include T. Gillespie, Mrs. Crump, T. H. Crump, Sister of Mrs. Crump and Mrs. May Elwords. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE BOOK OF THE GRAYLING. By T.E. Pritt.

Goodall & Suddick. Leeds. - 1888 1st edition. Ppviii,64,ads. Folded colour frontispiece of a grayling, two colour plates of flies. Maroon cloth gilt w/ bevelled edges. Slight wear to spine, ownership signs but a very good copy. The Book Of The Grayling: Being a description of the fish and the art of angling for him, as practiced chiefly in the Midlands and the North of England, By T.E. Pritt. With three illustrations in chromo-lithography from original drawings by the author. Pritt ".sketches lightly the habits and habitat of the fish as they were accepted fifty years ago, following with some capital pages on autumn fishing with the wet fly, and giving dressings of fifteen flies selected by well-known grayling fishers of his time. The rest of the slender volume is mostly occupied by excellent descriptive notes on the popular North Country form of grayling fishing known as "swimming the worm." Pritt wrought--and wrote--well as a pioneer, but he only touched the fringe of what has grown into a big subject, and he had not entirely shaken off the hackles of traditional fallacy." (W. Carter Platts. Grayling Fishing. 1939). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Career of Major George Broadfoot, C.B. (Governor-General's Agent N.W. Frontier, 1844-5) in Afghanistan and the Punjab. Compiled from his Papers and those of Lords Ellenborough and Hardinge.

London: John Murray, 1888 - Octavo. Original plum cloth, title gilt to the spine, Broadfoot arms gilt to the upper board. A little rubbed, the spine sunned, corners now stiffened, the spine relined, endpapers renewed, a well-restored copy, the contents complete, clean and sound. Portrait frontispiece and two full-page plans First edition. Uncommon memoir of the man described by his fellow political officer, Colin McKenzie, as "the foremost man in India". Broadfoot first served in India in the late 1820s with the 34th Native Infantry Madras Army. After returning to Britain to study at Addiscombe, he rejoined the Madras Army, commissariat department, in 1838 serving with distinction during the latter stages of the First Afghan War, famously prevailing against the majority to insist on the defence of Jalalabad; "and thus the firmness of one man, and he nearly the junior in the council of war, preserved his country's arms from suffering another deep and disgraceful blow" (Durand, The First Afghan War, p400). After the lifting of the siege, Broadfoot joined the relieving army under Major-General George Pollock "and distinguished himself in the actions at Mamu Khel, Jagdalak, and Tezin. In October he was promoted brevet major and made a CB." (ODNB). He had caught the eye of the governor-general, Lord Ellenborough, for his inspirational rôle as part of "illustrious garrison" at Jalalabad, and was made commissioner at Tenasserim in Burma, but his health suffered in the climate, and he requested a transfer. "In 1844 Sir Henry Hardinge, the new governor-general, appointed him his agent for the north-western frontier: an important position when war with the Sikhs seemed likely. He reported on the Punjab situation, negotiated with the Sikhs and, when war seemed imminent, gathered supplies for the army. In December 1845 the Sikhs invaded British territory. Broadfoot served on Hardinge's staff and was at the battles of Mudki and Ferozeshahr. At the latter, on 21 December, he was killed, shot through the heart". In his despatches following the battle Hardinge described him as "as brave as he was able in every branch of the political and military service", sentiments which would seem to suggest that Riddick's glib assessment of him as "a clever climber" is inapt at the very least. A very good copy of this sought-after biography. Riddick 73; [Attributes: First Edition]

Rothley: Not Appropriate, 1888. A 19th Century Herbarium album autographed "C. E. Trevelyan, Rothley, Northumberland, 1881" to the first page. This is Sir Charles Edward Trevelyan, 1st Baronet, KCB (2 April 1807 - 19 June 1886) British civil servant and colonial administrator. Infamous for his involvement in, and remarks regarding The Irish famine as Assistant Secretary to HM Treasury (1840-1859). C. E. Trevelyan inherited Wallington Hall, nr. Rothley Northumberland in 1879 from his cousin Walter Calverly Trevelyan, and presumably, it was while at Wallington that Charles started to assemble this herbarium album. It contains approximately 200 botanical specimens; each specimen mounted on a separate sheet, with four sheets per page. The majority of specimens were collected within the neighbourhood of Rothley, in or around the year 1888, each with name, location and date in the hand of C. E. T., and generally concentrates on the more interesting wild flowers including a number of orchid species. It would appear that the album was continued after the Death of Sir Charles as some of the specimens are of a later date. Others are collected elsewhere in the British Isles (Scilla verna Land's End 1896; other locations - North Wales, Near Bath, Isle of Skye etc). A few are from Norway and some collected by others E. Edwards 1902 Isle of Wight, Mrs Chapman Norway 1892, various specimens from Miss R. Lempriere in Surrey. There is some old insect damage but most specimens are in good condition. The leather spine of the album is missing, otherwise generally worn, but all pages still firmly bound in. A fascinating item with outstanding provenance.. Hard Cover. Very Good. Folio.

Circular[s]: Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Commandery of the State of Indiana. 1888-1922 [Two Volumes]

[Indianapolis]: [Commandery of the State of Indiana], 1888-1922. First edition. Cloth. Spine ends and joints scuffed on one volume, else a very good set with shelf sticker on foot of one spine, most circulars quite fresh. 8vo. The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, begun in Philadelphia in 1865, was modeled on the Society of the Cincinnati, and formed to protect the republic amid rumors of a plot to destroy the government after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Among its members were Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, and William McKinley. By 1899 it had over 8000 members which included nearly every officer of note. This is a nearly complete collection of 413 of 424 State of Indiana circulars through 1922 (those missing are after 1910), ending with the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial. Contains circulars, papers, treasurers' reports, black-bordered "In Memoriam" notices, each with a biography of the deceased, annual meeting notices, some signed and annotated by the Commandery recorders. A few other items such as registers of members, etc, bound in. A wealth of information and a very scarce collection, which would be nearly impossible to assemble today.
