An Album of Fine Pencil Sketches in and around the Caribbean Sea

October-November 1888- April and May 1894. Oblong 8vo., (4 x 6 4/8 inches). 47 fine full-page and double-page pencil sketches of coastal and inland views of islands in the Caribbean, each captioned and dated by the artist. Original tan pictorial cloth, gilt, edged in maroon morocco, inscribed by Brownell on the front free endpaper, and with a printed passenger list for the "Barracouta" which sailed from New-York to the Caribbean on the 10th October, 1888, tipped-in between the endpapers. Brownell, a landscape and still-life artist born in Providence, Rhode Island "sketched and painted some of the most distinctive scenery of any American artist,... he had a natural scientist's curiosity for the minute details of nature, and made voluminous sketches in both pencil and watercolor of specific nature studies as well as more complete landscape compositions. He kept meticulously detailed notes of his surroundings, both as inscriptions on individual sketches as well as in a series of picture diaries [as here]. Brownell's pictures broadly follow the style of the Hudson River School; he painted many oils and watercolours of the same New England views popular with other landscape artists of the time, as well as subjects drawn from the vicinities of his family's properties in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Brownell's most significant contribution to American landscape painting, however is his body of landscapes of the island of Cuba, which he first visited in 1853... Free from financial worries, Brownell traveled extensively throughout his life, and seems never to have stopped sketching. In all his works, there is a strong sense of place, of a particular location sensitively recorded at a specific moment in time. Brownell's sketches are souvenirs of the many places he visited. They were intended as such; each is annotated careful in clear script, with date and location generally recorded along with vantage point, common and botanical names of plants, and other relevant information. Brownell kept these sketches to remind himself of precisely what he saw at various times and places as, in effect, a visual diary that could rekindle his memory. Bound by the artist into books, these sketches were kept in his possession until his death" (Zachary D. Ross "Charles de Wolf Brownell: A Decade of Travel, 1856-66" pages 5-6). The sketches in this album are: In the "Doldrums" Oct.14.1888; Santa Cruz - Oct.17.1888; Brimstone Hill. St. Eustasius. Mt. A. Petherick Booksellers & Publishers, with trams and traffic.& & There are three views of ships - H. M. S. Calliope in Port Philip (Hobson's Bay), with 3 yachts, a tender and row boat; The Liverpool, largest sailing ship afloat; Steamship Cavo Romano New Orleans Feb 26th 94, docked with several crew sitting on barrels (with a tear). & & The NSW photographs are taken in and around Sydney, mostly signed "J.P.", possibly John Paine, 1834 - 1915, including Manly Cove; Harbour from Neutral Bay, with a building under construction in the foreground, and harbour and ships in the distance; Harbour from McMahon's Hill, with flags, ferries, row boats and sailing ships; Farm Cove, with ships and Government House in the distance; Coogee (?), with a hut in the foreground; trams in a turning circle, a beach and vacant land in the distance and an unidentified grand public building, with a horse and carriage visible. & & The Tasmanian photographs are unsigned. "Port Arthur, Tasmania" is a small panoramic view with the Penitentiary, ruins of Church and Model Prison, noted in the margins. Hobart from the lower slopes of Mt. Wellington, overlooking the harbour (River Derwent); a beautifully artistic photograph "Glimpse of Port Arthur, shewing side entrance to Peninsula & ruined church in distance" is framed by trees and bushes, the buildings visible in the distance. & & The photographs vary in size - the largest is 29 x 23 cm; the smallest 9.5 x 15 cm; most are approximately 20 x 15 cm. Most are bright and unfaded, while some have some fading. The album is bound in red cloth with title in blue, and gold gilt and black decoration at front cover. A little loose in binding, with the last few pages blank. Overall, a very interesting album in very good condition. Full details of each photo and size available on request.

MY ADVENTURE IN THE FLYING SCOTSMAN: AROMANCE OF LONDON AND NORTH-WESTERN RAILWAY SHARES.

London: James Hogg andSons, 1888. - First edition. Rainbow-colored, cloth front cover and tan rear cover, 63 pp. Front cover moderately rubbed, else a very good copy of a rare book. This book was considered to be rare in 1951, when Queen's Quorum was originally published. Queen's Quorum 13 says "In 1888, Eden Phillpotts's first book marked the beginning of one of the most prolific writing careers of our time. . . cornerstone honor should be accorded to Mr. Phillpott's maiden mystery, the thin, fragile book with the 'rainbow' stamping which is seldom found even in the so-called complete collections of Eden Phillpott's work. Modern readers will undoubtedly agree that MY ADVENTURES IN THE FLYING SCOTSMAN is an old fashioned tale of theft and attempted murder, relying a bit too strongly on the long arm of coincidence, but peopled with richly Victorian characters caught in the fell clutch of melodramatic circumstance." Housed in a clamshell case with the book's front cover design on the front panel. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Twenty-Eight Years in Wall Street

New York: Irving Publishing Co.,, 1888. Octavo (227 x 140 mm). Original dark green diagonally ribbed cloth, beveled boards, titles to spine and front board gilt, green floral endpapers, all edges trimmed. Frontispiece and 48 plates. Spine ends slightly nicked, corners a bit bumped and rubbed, minor cockling to cloth, a small light stain to top of spine, margins lightly browned. An excellent copy. First edition of this illustrated account of 19th-century Wall Street. British-born Clews (1834-1923) moved to the US and opened an office on Wall Street in 1858. Apart from his work as a note broker and private banker, Clews published a weekly pamphlet "which for years was widely known as the authoritative interpretation and forecast of market conditions" (Biographical Dictionary of American Business Leaders, Vol I, p.172). As such, Clews was a man with extensive personal experience of Wall Street and this work is "an interesting collection, from personal observation, reading, and hearsay, of fact and judgment about men and methods in corporation finance, investment banking, speculation, panics, and political events,...[during] a period in American history when ethical codes were at their lowest point. While this book is a valuable contemporary source of information about Wall Street and important figures in American business, it is also illuminating evidence of the ideas and reactions of a banker who was perhaps better informed and more judicious in his judgment of business than most contemporary writers" (Larson). In 1908, Irving published a second revised and enlarged edition entitled Fifty Years in Wall Street.

OPERACIONES MILITARES EN EL RIO GRANDE DE MINDANAO. RESENA HISTORICA DEL RIO GRANDE MINDANAO Y FRAGMENTOS DE UN DIARIO DE LA ULTIMA EXPEDICION, ILUSTRADO CON DIBUJOS Y FOTOGRAFIAS

Manila. 1888.. 139,iii,[1]pp., including in-text illustrations; plus colored folding map and sixty-six photographs on fifty-eight mounts, each photograph with a printed caption. Half title. Thick quarto. Modern red calf, spine gilt, raised bands. A bit of foxing to the mounts, and some photographs slightly faded. Very good. A virtually unknown work of Filipino photographica, this book constitutes an important visual record of the Philippines, and of Spanish-led military activities against Muslim insurgents on the island of Mindanao. The present copy contains three times as many photographs as is usually found. Mindanao, the second largest island in the Philippines, has a large Muslim population which has waged separatist battles against a variety of conquerors - Spanish, American, Japanese, and Filipino, for centuries. Today, part of the island is controlled by the "Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao," which exercises a degree of political autonomy from the central government in Manila. All the action described and depicted in this volume took place in this heavily Muslim region. Perinat y Lasso de la Vega's work describes in words and photographs three months of military activities against the Muslim separatists on Mindanao. The text consists of daily entries covering the period from mid- January to late March of 1887, as well as a preface giving a history of the region. The photographs show Spanish-led troops of native Filipinos engaged in military activities against the local Muslims. The Filipino soldiers appear dressed in their distinctive uniforms, carrying rifles, and wearing helmets that look like inverted bowls. Many of the photos show military operations, soldiers marching, tents, huts, and buildings, and gun boats on the Rio Grande de Mindanao. One photograph shows soldiers carrying their wounded on stretchers through the jungle. Another photograph shows the "Necropolis de los Sultanes de Buhayan" and another is of the Christian church at Tamontaca. Several cities are depicted, including Cottabatto, Damabalas, Lintukan, Pagalungan, Kudaranga, and Bacat. Many of the photographs, beyond the first twenty called for by Palau, show scenes of regular life in the towns of Mindanao, though there is often a military presence depicted as well. OCLC locates only two copies, at Cornell and the Newberry Library. Palau calls for only twenty photographs, less than one-third the number contained in this copy. A rare and important photographic work showing what amounted to a civil war in the Philippines, as local troops trained by a foreign power battled against an indigenous Muslim insurgency. PALAU 223038. OCLC 64004603.

      J. Durie & Son, Ottawa 1888 - [Roberts, Charles G. D.] Lampman, Archibald. AMONG THE MILLET AND OTHER POEMS. Ottawa: J. Durie & Son, 1888. True First Edition, First Issue, double ruled above & below the spine title. Lampman's First Book. Extraordinary copy. Inscribed by Chartles G. D. Roberts on the front free endpaper: "Some of these poems / were originally published by / me when I was editor of / The Week. Covers near fine, the book block needs sewing. Custom protective clamshell case. An important debut from an important Canadian poet. Perhaps the best possible copy. "Long hours ago, while yet the morn was blithe, / Nor sharp a thirst had drunk the beaded dew, / A reaper came, and swung his cradled scythe / Around this stump, and, shearing slowly, drew / Far round among the clover, ripe for hay, / A circle clean and grey; / And here among the scented swathes that gleam, / Mixed with dead daisies, it is sweet to lie / And watch the grass and the few-clouded sky, Nor think but only dream." - Among the Timothy by Lampman. Archibald Lampman, FRSC [17 November 1861 – 10 February 1899] He is widely regarded as Canada's finest 19th century English language poet. Lampman's poetry concerns Canada's rural life and the wonders of nature and can be compared to British romantic and nature poetry contemporary to his life. Lampman's ability to write detailed, meaningful poems that depict traditional Canadian and Native American life was one of his greatest triumphs as a poet, and probably one of the reasons why his work has had lasting impact in the Canadian canon. Lampman associated with Charles G. D. Roberts, Susanna Moodie, Catherine Parr Traill, Duncan Campbell Scott, & William Wilfred Campbell. He was one of the Confederation Poets and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1895. Sir Charles George Douglas Roberts, KCMG , FRSC , BA [January 10, 1860 - November 26, 1943]. Canadian poet, prose writer, lecturer, professor of Literature & economics. First recipient of the Lorne Pierce medal. He was knighted in 1935. Previously, he had been awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from the University of New Brunswick. Besides his own body of work, Roberts is known as the "Father of Canadian Poetry" because he served as an inspiration for other writers of his time. Roberts, his cousin Bliss Carman, Archibald Lampman and Duncan Campbell Scott were known as the "Confederation poets". [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Historia de las sublevaciones ind?genas habidas en el estado de Chiapas. Gramatica y Diccionario Tzeltal

Chiapas: Tipogiafia del Gobierno, 1888 2 parts: 340 pages with fold out table; 143+[3 errata] pages. Octavo (8 ¾ ” x 6 ½ ”) bound in cloth with gilt lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. 1st edition.Tzeltal is a member of the Mayan family of languages and is spoken mainly in the State of Chiapas, Mexico. Some of the earliest written documents in Tzeltal are Fray Domingo de Ara's Vocabulario de Lengua Tzeldal Según el Orden de Copanabastla, which is believed to have been written in 1571, and Manuel Díez's 1675 work, Conciones en Lingua Tzeldaica. There are currently at least six different dialects of Tzeltal spoken in Chiapas: Northern (Ocosingo, Bachajon) , West Central (Tenejapa, Cancuc), East Central (Oxchuc, Chanal, Amatenango), Southern (Aguacatenango, Villa las Rosas, Teopisca), South Western (Copanaguastla [extinct], Comitan), and the nearly extinct South Eastern (Trinitaria, Lagos de Montebello). However, this classification scheme is partial at best - each town where Tzeltal is spoken in the highlands of Chiapas has significant dialectical variation, with some towns even having two or more "sub-dialects" spoken within town boundaries. Vincente Pineda’s work includes both the grammar and dictionary of the Tzeltal.George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.Condition:Foster's stamp on title and acquiry date (4/7/47) on front paste down, gilt on spine totally faded, title soiled, page edges rough, some pages have minor repairs. A good copy of a very scarce linguistic dictionary.

Libro Primero de Cabildos de Lima

Republica Peruana, Lima 1888 - 3 parts: xxviii+445 pages with engraved color title, portrait and facsimile plates of original documents. 426 pages with engraved colored coats of arms, facsimile manuscript productions, family trees, maps and appendices. 220 pages with tables and engraved coat of arms plates. With collaboration by Pablo Patro and Nicanor Bolona. Signed by the author on the dedication page of volume one and the page following the Pizzaro plate of volume two. First edition. The Castilian cabildo has some similarities to the ancient Roman municipium and civitas—especially in the use of plural administrative officers and its control of the surrounding countryside, the territorium — but its evolution is a uniquely medieval development. With the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the establishment of the Visigothic Kingdom, the ancient municipal government disappeared. In many areas, seeking to escape from the political instability around them, people entrusted themselves to large landholders, exchanging their service for the landholder's protection, in a process that ultimately led to feudalism. In areas where the old territoria survived, the Visigothic kings appointed a single officer, called either a comes or a iudice to replace the defunct municipia or civitates. After the Muslim conquest, the new rulers also appointed various judicial officers to manage the affairs of the cities. Qadis heard any cases that fell under the purview of Sharia law and sahib oversaw the administration of the various other areas of urban life, such as the markets and the public order. The cabildo proper began its slow evolution in the process of the Reconquista. As fortified areas grew into urban centers or older cities were incorporated into the expanding Christian kingdoms of Portugal, León and Castile, kings (and sometimes local lords) granted the cities various levels of self-rule and unique sets of laws (the fueros) and made them the administrative center of a large teminus or alfoz, which was analogous to the ancient territorium. In general, municipal governments often consisted of a council (consejo) open to all the property-owning adult males of the city and a nobleman appointed to represent the king and organize the defense of the city and terminus. By the 13th century, these open councils proved unwieldy and were replaced by a smaller body, the cabildo or ayuntamiento consisting of set number of regidores (usually twenty-four in the largest cities) elected by the property owners in the city. These new bodies took their permanent form by the end of the 14th century. As part of the same process, a municipal council (the consell) with different attributes and composition also evolved in the neighboring Kingdom of Aragon during this period. In theory, every municipality in the Spanish colonies in the Americas and Philippines had a cabildo. Municipalities were not just the cities but included the surrounding lands. All lands were ultimately assigned to a municipality. Usually the cabildo made local laws and reported to the presidente (president) of the audiencia, who in turn reported to the viceroy. The cabildo had judicial, legislative and administrative duties. For this reason it was often addressed with the formula, Consejo, Justicia y Regimiento (Council, Justice and Government). The cabildo consisted of several types of officials. There were four to twelve regidores, depending on the size and importance of the municipality. Regidores, were not just deliberative officers, but all shared in the administration of the territory, dividing tasks among themselves. Initially the regidores were elected by all the heads of household. In the late Middle Ages, these elections often turn violent, with citizens forming bands to control elections and even resorting to murder. To minimize this kings began to appoint a certain number of, or even all of, the regidores in certain cities. By the modern era different cabildos had different mixes of elected and appointed r [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1888 - Materia: Encuadernación artistica de Marius Michel. Publicación: París; A la Libraire de l'Art, 1888. Descripción: Folio Mayor. (35 cm.) xxvii., 289 p. 6 aguafuertes y 143 dibujos de Eugéne Lambert. Encuadernación plena piel firmada por Marius Michel. Edition a 100 exemplaires, sur Japón [nº 81]. Estado de conservación: Muy buen ejemplar. Notas: Marius michel, Henri.

2472; "Lipperheideschen Kostumbibliothek [Katalog der]", Berlin 1965, vol. I, scheda Ad 52.
