        Oldham County State of Texas

St. Louis: A. Gast & Co., 1888. AN IMPORTANT TEXAS LAND GRANT Paper size: 24" x 26 1/2" Lithograph Texas, without gold mines or fabulous cities, was rich with abundant and affordable pubic land, which attracted a steady stream of visitors during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Lured by the dream of land ownership or profit from land speculation, many left their homelands for the Texas wilderness. It would be difficult to find better illustrations of this migration than the county survey maps charting the boundaries of tracts and names of grantees. These early maps, contemporary with the arrival of new settlers, provide a fascinating visual history of Texas land policy and the settlement of the Lone Star State. While Texas remained a Spanish dominion, land grants were granted to Spanish subjects only. Authority to grant land rested with the viceroy of New Spain in Mexico City until 1767 when the governor of the province of Texas was invested with the authority to issue grants. In 1820 Spain passed a law allowing foreigners to settle in the empire. The government of the now independent Mexico, which controlled the vast public lands of Texas, followed its colonial predecessor's example and in the proceeding years thousands of Anglo Americans undertook the arduous journey across the continent to take advantage of the opportunity to become Texas landowners. Large land grants were also awarded to colony leaders called empresarios, the most famous of whom are probably Moses and his son Stephen Austin. With no central land office, each colony appointed a land commissioner to issue titles to settlers. In 1830 the Mexican congress outlawed further immigration from the United States, sparking the Texas Revolution in the fall of 1835. Upon the establishment of the new Republic in 1836, Texas secured ownership of more than 200 million acres of public land. The Republic of Texas continued the land policies of Spain and Mexico and under its constitution awarded first-class headright to land to all single men and heads of families residing in Texas on March 2, 1836. The first congress of the Republic also established a General Land Office and during the years of independence a total of 36,876,492 acres was parceled out. The pioneers who settled this land helped defend Texan borders from both Indians and Mexico, the latter of which was eager to regain its lands. They also provided valuable tax revenue for the new nation. Texas became the twenty-eighth state of the Union in 1845. With the exception of the thirteen colonies, it is unique among the states because, upon its admittance, it retained its public lands thus providing for its economic strength and success. The new state used some of this land to settle its debts and make public improvements. Under the terms of the Compromise of 1850, Texas ceded its claim to 67 million acres of land to the west and northwest of its current boundaries in exchange for a payment of $10 million. After the settlement of its $7.75 million of debt, Texas used the remainder of the payment to establish a permanent school fund, build a new capitol and governor's mansion, and create a hospital for the mentally ill. The settlement of this public land remained an important part of state policy. Many of the Spanish community property and homestead laws were retained through the era of Mexican rule and the republican period and remained in practice after Texas became a state. Among these, property was exempt from forced sale and land grants extended only as far as the riverbank and not to the middle of the stream, as dictated by Anglo-Saxon common law. The government retained ownership of the streambed and water flowing through it. Most importantly for Texas, Spanish law he. Book.

Silk campaign flag bandana, 1888 Benjamin Harrison and Levy Morton, 19.5\" x 19.5\", matted and framed in a beautiful display. The colors are bright, the borders are full and untrimmed. An excellent example. On the bandana are three of the main campaign issues in the 1888 election: Pensions for soldiers, which were passed by Harrison, Protection vs. free trade, which was passed as the McKinley Tariff Act in 1890, along with the Sherman Anti-Trust Act that same year, and Aid for free schools, which did not fare so well. Six states, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming, were admitted to the Union while Harrison was in office, the first states admitted in more than a decade.

        Tom Brown's School Days

London: Macmillan & Co.,, 1888. By an Old Boy. Octavo (180 × 120 mm). Contemporary scarlet full morocco, spine in compartments with gilt rules and titles direct, double gilt rule bordering sides, gilt roll to board edges, elaborately gilt-rolled turn ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Illustrated frontispiece, vignette title page, several vignette illustrations in the text and seven illustrated plates. Spine somewhat darkened, very slight rubbing to the extremities, mild spotting to some leaves and occasionally at the plates; a lovely sound copy in very good condition. A very handsomely bound copy of Tom Brown's School Days (first published in 1857), inscribed by the author on the half title, "John Ormerod Scarlett Thursby, with all good wishes from the author & his wife. Nov. 1888". The recipient was John Ormerod Scarlett Thursby (1861-1920), 2nd baronet Thursby of Ormerod House and Holmhurst, whose life followed the same traditional trajectory of public school, Oxbridge and the Bar as Thomas Hughes's had, and (excepting the third stage) Tom Brown's own. Thursby, for his part, went to Eton, Trinity Cambridge (where he gained a first class degree in political economy), and the Bar, in which practice he could easily have met Hughes. He was a talented chess player, representing Cambridge against Oxford, elected adjudicator by the British Chess Association in 1885, later president of the British Chess Federation, and president of the National Chess Congress in 1904.

ROBERT ELSMERE. In Three Volumes (Fine Original Condition)

Smith, Elder, 1888. Ward, Mrs. Humphry. ROBERT ELSMERE. In Three Volumes. London: Smith, Elder, 1888. First Edition. A NEAR FINE set in original publisher's dark blue-green fine-diaper cloth, only the slightest wear to the extremities, simply superb for this title. ROBERT ELSMERE, now mostly familiar only to the Victorian Fiction specialist, was one of the single most important novels about religious faith and doubt published in the late Victorian era. It presented an uncanny and minute psychological analysis of its central character, creating a vision of Christianity based on social concern and not pure theology. Mary Augusta Ward (1851-1920) is sometimes chided by those with rear view mirrors for being part of an anti-suffrage movement in her later years but writers of the times such as Thomas Hardy recognized her subversive pro-woman subtext and she was much admired. Her charitable work was equally celebrated; she is not a writer to be forgotten. To quote John Carter in his landmark 1947 exhibition catalogue: "It is hard nowadays to realize how deeply Mrs. Ward's novel stirred the thoughtful public of the day." We've never seen a nicer copy of this important High Spot, one of the triumphant achievements of Victorian Women's Fiction and, in terms of faith questioned, one of the most important novels of the times.         Le Costume Historique (6 volumes)

Paris: Firmin-Didot et Cie., 1888. 1st Edition. Half Morocco . Fine. Book. Elephant Folio - over 15. This is the much less common folio version of this work, with each of 6 volumes measuring 16.5 by 12.5 inches, or 42 by 32 cm. With 500 plates, 300 using color chromolithography. This copy is about as as good as it gets. Modern half morocco over green boards is pristine. Five thick raised bands on each spine, with gilt lettered labels. Traditional Victorian endpapers. All bindings are tight. Interiors are about as clean as can be, notwithstanding the most occasional and lightest of speck. This is one of the most elaborate and detailed costume books ever produced, if not the single most ambitious such work. It is still an invaluable reference, but it functions fabulously well simply as visual entertainment, and the plates contained herein have found their ways to many a print shop where they have been framed and later hung on walls as decoration. As not uncommon among costume books, Racinet also serves up a healthy helping of accessories and interiors throughout the ages. Like Racinet's other masterpiece, "L'Ornement Polychrome", the chromolithography of this work is exceptionally brilliant.

MY ADVENTURE IN THE FLYING SCOTSMAN: AROMANCE OF LONDON AND NORTH-WESTERN RAILWAY SHARES

London: James Hogg andSons, 1888., 1888. First edition. Rainbow-colored, cloth front cover and tan rear cover, 63 pp. Front cover moderately rubbed, else a very good copy of a rare book. This book was considered to be rare in 1951, when Queen's Quorum was originally published. Queen's Quorum 13 says "In 1888, Eden Phillpotts's first book marked the beginning of one of the most prolific writing careers of our time. .... .... cornerstone honor should be accorded to Mr. Phillpott's maiden mystery, the thin, fragile book with the 'rainbow' stamping which is seldom found even in the so-called complete collections of Eden Phillpott's work. Modern readers will undoubtedly agree that MY ADVENTURES IN THE FLYING SCOTSMAN is an old fashioned tale of theft and attempted murder, relying a bit too strongly on the long arm of coincidence, but peopled with richly Victorian characters caught in the fell clutch of melodramatic circumstance." Housed in a clamshell case with the book's front cover design on the front panel.

        RANCH LIFE AND THE HUNTING-TRAIL

The Century Co., [1888]., 1888. First edition. Large quarto. Original elaborate gilt pictorial cloth stamped in green and gold on the front cover (first state), [i-x], 186 pp., [p.187- vignette], frontispiece, illustrated by Frederic Remington, all edges gilt. This is Roosevelt's first book on his life as both a rancher and hunter in the West, and his first collaboration in book form with Frederic Remington, Roosevelt's friend. A splendid account of ranching and ranch life in the Dakotas in the 1880s, and an early Remington illustrated book. Six Score 93 says, " Roosevelt describes western ranching generally and his own experiences in the Dakota Badlands in particular. A New Yorker drawn by the cattle boom, Roosevelt developed a love of the West he never lost. He was prominent in the Little Missouri Stockman's Association, and was apparently respected as a cowman despite his origins. The illustrations by Remington are excellent." Light offsetting to the front and rear endpapers, else a near fine, bright, clean copy in the original dust jacket which is worn with chips at the spine ends and corners and several tears, yet still in serviceable condition. An uncommonly scarce Remington item, especially in the first state of the binding.

Album of Botanical Specimens - Flora Alpina

Zermatt, Switzerland 1888 - A most impressive illustration of apline flora collected and preserved by a botanical enthusiast who travelled to Switzerland in 1888 Zermatt, August 1888. Oblong 8vo. Nineteenth Century album containing 109 plant specimens collected in Swiss alpine regions, each identified by their scientific name in exquisite penmanship. A bouquet montage concludes the volume most elegantly. Original red cloth boards, tooled and titled "Flora Alpina" in gilt to front. Some wear to boards, otherwise very good condition, a pleasing volume presenting a substantial collection. A delightfully fastidious work, with impeccable placement to expose the finest textures, multiple varieties of a specific genus are juxtaposed for comparison, and whenever possible, the plants were extracted with even roots in tact. The English-speaking traveller and avid plant collector is unidentified but an inscription to the final leaf, alongside an exquisite bouquet montage reveals the source as Zermatt, and the date as August 1888. Primula, Phyteuma, Leontopodium alpinum (Edelweiss), Thlaspi, Dentaria digitata, Hieracium, Potentilla, Erigeron glabellus, and a Cypripedium calceolus (Lady's-slipper orchid), are but a few of the flowering plants preserved herein.

Kniaz’ Igor’: Opera (Le Prince Igor: Opera in quatre actes avec prologue: Paroles russes du compositeur, Traduction francaise du Jules Ruelle, Traduction allemande du Madame Alexandroff.).

Leipzig: Izd. M. P. Beliaeva 1888 - Small folio (33 x 26.5 cm). Original decorative wrappers; XVI, 1-213 pp. Chromolithograph signed A. Antipov; steel-engraved frontis portrait of Borodin with his signature and dedication leaf to M. Glinka. Private ownership stamp and signature; light wear to wrappers and spine, with soil and minimal loss to extremities; two bent corners and faint pencil inscriptions. First edition of Alexander Borodin’s (1833-1887) heroic opera Prince Igor, published posthumously in Leipzig by Russian music publisher M. P. Beliaeff, this copy being the arrangement for piano by F. M. Blumenfeld. At the time of Borodin's death, the work was incomplete and the present score was the result of furious collaboration by the leading musical intellects of Russia. The score would be revised many times in its history, but this edition, which was only published once, predates its first public performance in 1890 and thus serves as the historical blueprint for the oft-performed and well-loved opera, one of the best- known Russian operas among western audiences. Rare in the original wrappers and with the striking color chromolithograph showing a collection of typically Russian motifs. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
