A good set. This is the 100th edition, the first illustrated by the photographs of P. H. Emerson. Born in Cuba, Peter Henry Emerson (1856 - 1936) spent his early childhood in America, coming to England for his education. He became a doctor in England but gave up this career in order to devote himself to writing and photography, having been an amateur since 1882. In reaction against the stagnant artificialities of conventional salon photography, Emerson founded the 'school' of naturalistic photography. He published seven photographically illustrated books of landscapes in limited editions with platinotypes or photo - etchings. (See Gernsheim, History of Photography, pages 456 - 60). 'Emerson stressed the importance of natural settings and spontaneous poses, and opposed artificial studio setups or excessively contrived combination prints. He also advocated focusing sharply on the central object in a scene, with the other planes of the picture slightly out of focus... In 1885 Emerson exploded onto the photographic scene. With his pictures on display and winning prizes everywhere, he avidly engaged in writing, lecturing, and publishing to support and explain his theories, showing a talent for virulent diatribe against the opposition.'. (See Witkin and London, The Photograph Collector's Guide p. 130). HEAVY BOOKS WHICH WILL REQUIRE EXTRA POSTAGE. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST. A heavy set which may require extra postage.

- Tafel 14 in 2 Fassungen vorhanden. Meiji Kaisei Tokyo Zenzu. (Revised Meiji Map of Tokyo)

Tokyo.: Koshodo., Meiji 21. 1888.. Tokyo.: Koshodo.. Meiji 21. 1888.. Copperplate engraved map with woodblock color, 20 x 28 1/2 inches on sheet 20 1/2 x 29 inches, folding to 6 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches. Several small repaired worm holes, a few without repairs, light wear, overall clean and bright. A particularly appealing Meiji Japanese map of Tokyo, apparently geared to the tourist trade as well as to the Japanese visitor, with names of the districts marked on the map and the legend in both kanji and English. There is an unusual inset (6 x 8 1/2 inches) of Yokohama at upper left. The map is surrounded by small vignette scenes. Most interestingly, contained within the yellow border between the images and the map is the description (in Japanese) for a 4 day walking tour of Tokyo. To the right of the compass rose is a schedule for trains leaving from Ueno and Maibashi. The inset at lower left corner shows the train schedule Tokyo - Yokohama, and the price for each stage of the journey. The inset at the lower right corner is a listing of municipal and rural districts. Beneath the map at lower right is the publisher Koshodo, followed by the characters for copper engraving (dosen). A wealth of detailed information! The Imperial Palace is misspelled as 'Emperil Palace.' .

Programm zur Eröffnungs-Vorstellung am 1.März 1888 des Etablissement Ronacher, Wien, zu Gunsten der Wiener Freiwilligen Rettungs-Gesellschaft. - ORIGINAL.
