(Enterrement d'artiste) - 7 ff. (Le Clown) - 6 ff. (Du cimetière) - 4 ff. (Noël triste) - 34 pp. et 1 f. bl. (Vieille fille - version corrigée) - 7 ff. (La Mendiante) - 6 ff. (La Marte) - 10 ff. (Nocturne sombre) - 8 ff. (Obsession subtille) - 15 ff. (Tante Lili) - 21 ff. (Adultère sentimental) - 9 ff. (L'Ouvrier) - 10 ff. (In extremis) - 1 f. (page de titre des Etudes modernistes) - 6 ff. (Le Rêve) - 9 ff. (Causerie) - 10 ff. (Impression d'automne) - 10 ff. (Dillettantisme) - 7 ff. (Insomnie) - 1 f. bl. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. Sixth Edition, with Additions and Corrections to 1872. (Thirty-Fifth Thousand). REMARKABLY BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY

John Murray, 1888, 18888vo., Sixth Edition, Thirty-Fifth Thousand, with a folding diagram (lightly creased without loss as a result of poor folding), rear free endpaper recto lightly spotted; original arches-style binding of green cloth, decorative gilt back, chocolate endpapers, uncut, upper hinge tender (but binding entirely sound), backstrip very slightly dulled (but all gilt bright and clear), an unusually bright, clean, crisp copy with no sign of the usual age-staining or bruising. With 32pp publisher's catalogue (dated February 1888) bound in at end.The sixth is generally held to be the last significant edition, containing as it does Darwin's final major corrections and revisions. Published in 1872, it is the first edition with the title The Origin of Species, and includes among many other revisions a new chapter (VII) inserted to confute the views of the Catholic biologist St. George Mivart. There is a glossary, and the word 'evolution' is used in the text for the first time. An attractive and desirable copy of the 'most important scientific work of the 19th century' (Horblit) and 'the most important biological book ever written' (Freeman).Scarce in anything like this condition.Freeman (Darwin), 131; Freeman (BNHB), 907.

        Famous Clyde Yachts.

London: Oatts & Rungman, 1888 - Folio. Bound in recent green half morocco retaining the original green boards, titles and illustration to front board gilt. A few marks to boards, and occasional minor foxing to some plates and text pages, but overall a very good copy of this rare work with fine colour plates. 31 mounted chromolithographic plates. First and only edition. The Royal Clyde Yacht Club was the biggest in Britain at the end of the nineteenth century, larger even than the Solent Yacht Club, and Clyde yachts were world-famous as pioneers of the relatively new sport of yacht racing. This book reproduces in chromolithography a series of watercolours by Henry Shields RBA (1859–1935) showing famous yachts or "white wings", mostly built 1880-87, with four boats built prior to 1880 included as notable precursors of the Clyde yacht boatbuilding style. Three of them (the "Genesta," "Galatea," and "Thistle") had made attempts to win the America's Cup. [Attributes: First Edition]

Solved mysteries: Or, Revelations of a City Detective

By James M‘Govan, Author of “Brought to Bay,” “Hunted Down,” “Strange Clues,” “Traced and Tracked,” etc. Edinburgh and Glasgow: John Menzies and Company. Post 8vo; half-title not called for; integral advertisement leaf followed by 16pp. text-paper advertisements at end, probably integral; pp.[viii]+366+[xviii]; yellow boards printed in red and black, the front board bearing an illustration involving a ghost, the spine conventional ornaments, printed in red and black, the back cover publisher’s advertisements. Almost invisibly rebacked, preserving the original slightly chipped backstrip; minute chips to two margins (apparently an original trimming fault, and short tear to one fore-margin; light damp-cockling and slight discolouration to back end-papers; otherwise a fine, crisp, copy. Very scarce, especially thus. M‘Govan claims to have been responsible for seeding the “extraordinary crop of ‘Detective’ stories from other writers” that appeared during the 1880s, commenting in his Preface: “A very eminent publisher, who refused ‘Brought to Bay’ on the ground that ‘the taste for that kind of literature had entirely faded,’ must now be rubbing his eyes in astonishment.” As with the other titles in the series, the present volume was published simultaneously in two formats, ‘Pictorial Boards, Price 2s. 6d.’, as here, and ‘Cloth Gilt, 3s. 6d.’ Both are now very scarce, having for the most part, presumably, been read to pieces! Diphyllodes Chrysoptera, Gould (Golden-winged Bird of Paradise)

London 1888 - John Gould (1804-1881) was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor, from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became an expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. While in Papua New Guinea, he decided to embark on a final folio as a complement to his unprecedented “Birds of Asia”. “The Birds of New Guinea” was Gould's last full-scale work, left incomplete on his death in 1881. Gould completed twelve of the twenty-five parts, and the task of finishing the project fell to Richard Bowdler Sharpe, a superbly qualified successor, who had been Gould's colleague, assistant and friend. One of Gould's most exotic works, the five magnificent volumes of the Birds of New Guinea contain an extensive series of beautiful images of birds of paradise, bower birds, parrots, parakeets, cockatoos, kingfishers and hawk-owls. All of the 320 images are extraordinary for their color and artistry, interesting backdrops and animated compositions. Gould and Sharpe created some of their most engaging and active scenes of bird life in the “The Birds of New Guinea”, and the great popular reception of the work was such that it was one of their only productions that led to a sequel, Sharp's “Birds of Paradise” (1891-98). Missing from that later production, however, was the almost overwhelming variety of species of the “The Birds of New Guinea”, which, like the “Birds of Asia”, was the most comprehensive chronicle of the island's ornithology ever issued. This magnificently hand-colored lithograph, "Diphyllodes Chryspotera, Gould", measures 21.5" x 14.75" and is in excellent condition. These birds, commonly called Golden-winged Birds of Pardise, are expertly hand-colored with vibrant shades of green, yellow, orange, red and brown, and colorful accents. The dynamic positioning of the birds allows for all angles of their feathers to be appreciated. They are shown resting on tree branches and one reaches for some red berries. The long tail feathers and beautiful color give this lithograph a dynamic composition.

Japan: Travels and Researches Undertaken at the Cost of the Prussian Government

Hodder and Stoughton.. Second edition.. 1888.. Translated. Many full page black and white wood engravings and 6 original black and white photographs laid down, ix + 543pp, index, 2 large folding coloured maps, preliminarly leaves little foxed, some occasional spotting in text, in particular on the tissue guards, but in the main the text is very clean. Signature of presumably this copy's first owner dated June 1889, Yokohama, recto frontispiece. Professionally rebacked with new endpapers, original backstrip laid down on new spine, folding maps browned in places, closed tears on maps have been repaired with tape, pictorial cloth binding little rubbed and lightly marked, with some very minor loss on upper joint in one place still a very presentable copy. This detailed account of Japan in the 1870s is based on a residence of nearly two years in the country and many travels through the islands of Hondo, Shikoku, Kiushiu and Amakusa (sic) in the years 1874 and 1875. The author had been charged by the Prussian Ministry of Commerce with the task of recording the trade and industry of Japan. His findings on these subjects were published as "The Industries of Japan" in 1889. "But as there can be no doubt that the nature of a country, the historical and social development of its inhabitants, and their relations to other nations, are the basis upon which the form and substance of its commercial and industrial, as well as its intellectual life are unfolded, it seemed advisable first to publish this present work." (From the preface). With the exception of the historical material included all of the information in the book is based on the author's own observations and researches during his time in Japan. .

This is ye Log of ye [in pencil, hand-lettered with a drawing of a log] good Yacht "Truant" her Cruise with a Cargo of Doctors, Commodore Chas. A. Cheever, Commanding, Summer of 1882

[No place: privately printed. 1888?]. Oblong octavo. Pictorial wrappers. 184pp. Typewritten on rectos only, paper watermarked with the date 1882. Very good condition; negligible wear. A presumably unknown privately printed yachting yarn associated with a known yachting aficionado and a remarkable, handicapped inventor who erected and owned the first telephone lines in New York City. Charles A. Cheever's (1852-1900) obituary describes him as a noted electrical inventor "who organized various sub-telephone companies in New York State and erected and owned the first telephone lines in New York City." To prove the commercial viability of the telephone, Cheever staged a public demonstration wherein he connected his office in the Tribune building with the American Institute Fair. From this, the strains of music from the band were head over the telephone wire. [Auburn Democrat Argus, May 4, 1900, p. 8]. Cheever was a recognizable figure on the streets of New York where he was affectionately known by all as "Commodore Cheever" by the city's inhabitants: "Mr Cheever was a great lover of yachting. He was a member of the New York and Seawanhaka Corinthian yacht clubs, being one of the early promoters of the latter. He was greatly interested in the sailing of small yachts, and owned first the sloop yacht Truant and afterward the schooner yacht Crusader." The "Truant" begins her trip on August 18 1882 leaving Newport, [Rhode Island] Harbor, laden with her "cargo of doctors" [names as of yet unidentified] and returns September 1st. The item is a novelty being laid out and written in the format of a ship's log, but then bursting forth, at random, into humorous verse, presumably from Cheever. Destinations and activities mentioned include, in part, Nantucket Harbor, Cape Cod, Cohasset Harbor, reeling in the blue fish, swimming, dining, and general joviality. From infancy, Cheever was paralyzed from the waist down. He never weighed more than 77 pounds. A servant carried Cheever on his back throughout the streets of New York. [Ref., K.A. Wilson, "A review of early telephone history in New York City: telephone events related to New York City before the commercial introduction of the telephone: history of the first company, the Telephone Company of New York, and the founding of its successor, the Bell Telephone Company of New York. New York: New York Telephone Co.", 1950, typescript]. Not in OCLC, and presumably unrecorded. .

Glasgow and London: Oatts & Runciman, 1888 - Henry Shields and James Meikle Illustrated plate from Famous Clyde Yachts 1880-87 Glasgow and London: Oatts & Runciman, 1888 Chromolithograph 19 ¼" x 22 ¼" framed This beautiful and historically important series of famous 19th century yachts depict scenes from the Clyde River area in Scotland. This area near Glasgow has been a famous area for yachting for over a century. Sporting activities, such as riding, shooting, fishing and yachting were becoming more popular in England at this time with the growing middle and upper classes. At the same time the process of chromolithography had been developed, producing colored prints that have the look and feel of a watercolor. These developments led to a number of sporting portfolios being produced in England at the end of the late 19th century. This particular notable series of yachting scenes is based off of watercolors by Henry Shields. The volume was arranged and written by James Meikle, whom wished to highlight the notable yachts of Clyde. Each illustration features a yacht, and Meikle accompanies each yacht scene with a thorough description of that vessel.

[Philadelphia]. (1888). Oblong quarto. Measures approximately 14.5" x 11". 60 thick-paper leaves bound in full morocco, printed decorative endpapers. Boards stamped in blind and gilt, with owner's name: "William Henry Beard, March 4th, 1888" in gilt on the front board. Binder's ticket: "Shipman's Patent, Invoice & Scrap Book" on the front pastedown. Scuffing to the edges, very good. A large and meticulously assembled collection of wood-engravings clipped from various late-19th Century periodicals, neatly aligned and tipped-in on the versos and rectos of all sixty leaves. The album opens with a cut-out color printed paper bird mounted above a printed card: "An Affectionate Greeting." There follows two full-page wood-engraved portraits of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia merchant who is considered the father of modern advertising and marketing, and George W. Childs, owner of the Philadelphia Public Ledger and an important real estate developer. Both men were great philanthropists throughout the 1880s. The album contains numerous scenic landscapes in the dramatic style of the Hudson River School: mountains, valleys, waterfalls, rivers, bays, mills, etc. in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and elsewhere in New England and throughout the entire country. Also included are street scenes, monuments, and views of towns. A beautiful collection. .

Mercantile Marine Insurance Rotating Officers Chart

[Boston. circa 1888]. Framed chart of the officers of the Mercantile Marine Insurance Company in Boston, Massachusetts. The original wood frame measures approximately 11" x 13.5" and houses an intricately hand-drawn pen and ink chart with slots for the names of various corporate officers. The acting directors slot at the top features a rotating wheel, open at the rear of the frame, to easily change names. The frame shows moderate chipping while the chart is somewhat soiled, with all but three of the slots containing the original names and the original backers and spacers made from a contemporary calendar contained under the chart in the rear, very good. The Mercantile Marine Insurance Company was a firm established in 1823 and located on 58 State Street in Boston. Despite adding fire coverage to its business the year before the Great Boston Fire of 1872, it still managed to turn a tidy profit and continue doing business for more than a decade. It was one of only two such firms in Boston at the time to offer both marine and fire coverage. An interesting item of 19th Century business decor and utilitarianism. Further details available upon request. .
