å™ ç‰ å› å¼ [Kibutsu Zushiki - Vessel Patterns (more or less)].

      - Tokyo, Hayashi Tamiji 1888 [Meiji 21]. 245x180mm publisher's wrapper with printed label (sometime rebacked with rice paper and since split down the spine); [2]pp, one single and 51 double page litho plates. Bound as an accordian fold, with one plate separated down the fold. Signs of use but pretty good for a book virtually guaranteed to be used to pieces. An intriguing thing: a lithographed pattern book for export ceramic ware and very much a working book. Essential at the time when Japanese manufactury moved from craft to industry with the introduction of plaster casting, transfer printing and so on. Pots, cups and saucers, jugs, vases, urns, bowls . some items are shown decorated, some show enough decoration to be a guide and many are outline plates - some at full scale - to get the form right. Getting the form right was the important bit at this point, pattern books for decoration were plentiful. This has the look of being adapted from a Chinese work - which makes sense, the Chinese had a long established export market, and some of the forms here are already a century old - but I can't trace what that may be. Nor can I find much about this; Worldcat finds one copy, in Chicago, and further searches find only the National Diet Library copy.]sq

The Athletic Publishing Company, Philadelphia 1888 - First edition, wrappered issue. 149pp. Bound in black cloth covers with wrappers bound in. A couple of old professional paper repairs, slight wear, a near fine copy. Ward was one of the great pitchers; when he injured his arm, he became a star shortstop for the New York Giants. Unlike most players of his day, he was a college graduate, earning a law degree from Columbia while playing. He was the first President of the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players, the first players' union, and in 1890 helped to form the Players' League, which folded after one season. The Hall of Famer retired at 34 as player-manager of the world champion Giants. One of the first truly important books on baseball as a game. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Q. HORATI FLACCI OPERA

London: [Printed by C. Whittingham for] Kegan Paul, Trench & Co, 1888. n. Hardcover. 159 x 95 mm (6 1/4 x 3 3/4"). 2 p.l., 302 pp. Preface by Francis Warre Cornish. ARRESTING RED MOROCCO ELABORATELY INLAID IN A MOSAIC PATTERN BY RAMAGE (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers bordered with thin decorative and plain gilt rules, the rest of the boards entirely covered with inlaid diapering featuring rows of teal lozenges tooled with gilt fleurons, these flanked on all four sides with inlaid tan circles, the red morocco tooled with curving gilt lines attached to the dots, raised bands, spine compartments with similar inlaid teal lozenges tooled in gilt, delicate gilt cornerpieces, gilt titling, pastedowns framed by red morocco inlaid with tan circles at the corners and with gilt floral tooling, cream-colored watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. In a modern felt-lined red cloth folding box. With engraved frontispiece and printer's device on title page. A couple of faint creases to leaves, but A VIRTUALLY MINT COPY, immaculate internally and in a lovely, lustrous, unworn binding. This is a very attractively printed and beautifully bound edition of Horace, edited by beloved Eton schoolmaster Francis Warre Cornish (1839-1916). The volume features a sparkling and animated design from one of the most respected English binders during the last half of the 19th century. Born in London in 1836, John Ramage served an apprenticeship with John Wright, then went to Paris, where he was able to work with the distinguished Marcellin Lortic. In 1860 Ramage purchased the binding business of Alexander Banks, Jr., in Edinburgh, then returned three years later to London, where he was in business at various locations into the 20th century (W. D. and N. M. Ramage carried on the business until 1929). The delicate and careful execution for which the bindery was known is clearly on display in the mosaic inlays here. Our binding follows a tradition of mosaic bindings that is said to have originated in France in the early part of the 18th century and was resurrected in England at the end of that century by Staggemeier & Welcher, perhaps at the suggestion of James Edwards.

        Loriculus Aurantiifrons, Schlegel (Orange-crowned Loriculus)

London 1888 - John Gould (1804-1881) was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor, from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became an expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. While in Papua New Guinea, he decided to embark on a final folio as a complement to his unprecedented “Birds of Asia”. “The Birds of New Guinea” was Gould's last full-scale work, left incomplete on his death in 1881. Gould completed twelve of the twenty-five parts, and the task of finishing the project fell to Richard Bowdler Sharpe, a superbly qualified successor, who had been Gould's colleague, assistant and friend. One of Gould's most exotic works, the five magnificent volumes of the Birds of New Guinea contain an extensive series of beautiful images of birds of paradise, bower birds, parrots, parakeets, cockatoos, kingfishers and hawk-owls. All of the 320 images are extraordinary for their color and artistry, interesting backdrops and animated compositions. Gould and Sharpe created some of their most engaging and active scenes of bird life in the “The Birds of New Guinea”, and the great popular reception of the work was such that it was one of their only productions that led to a sequel, Sharp's “Birds of Paradise” (1891-98). Missing from that later production, however, was the almost overwhelming variety of species of the “The Birds of New Guinea”, which, like the “Birds of Asia”, was the most comprehensive chronicle of the island's ornithology ever issued. This folio size, hand-colored lithograph, Loriculus Aurantiifrons, Schlegel, is in excellent condition. Measuring 21.5" x 14.75", this lithograph displays the author’s scientific skill and attention to detail. Commonly called Orange-collared Loriculus or Philippine Hanging Parrots, these birds are expertly hand-colored with vibrant green bodies and teal, yellow, red and orange accents throughout. These birds are shown hanging from the tree branches with delicately colored flowers and berries. The vibrant coloring and exquisite detailing of these birds adds to the dynamic composition of this lithograph.

Engraved frontispieces and plates and wood-engraved text illustrations, including fifty portraits in duplicate, one on Japanese and the other on plate paper, as India proofs. Descriptive tissue guards. Wood-engraved tail-piece vignettes.Bound ca. 1970 by [Sangorski & Sutcliffe] for Aspey in three-quarter green crushed levant morocco over green cloth boards, ruled in gilt. Spines decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A fine set."Readers are indebted to Dr. DORAN in these pleasant volumes, for the first history of the English acted Drama, fitted for ordinary perusal by its moderate length and the amusing nature of its contents. It is sure to become a popular book, as long as the great names of the golden age of the Theatre retain their attraction The actors -- those "diverting vagabonds" -- (as Dr. JOHNSON somewhere called them,) stand indeed a better chance to be remembered than most of their graver cotemporaries. There are many among them whose talents might adorn, and their virtues reflect credit on any sphere of action. GARRICK. KEMBLE, SIDDONS, CHARLES KEAN, BETTERTON, and others, are names that would ennoble any profession, and if many of equal ability with those mentioned failed to rival their virtues, the very delinquencies that their names recall, but add to the never failing interest with which we read of PEG WOFFINGTON, KITTY CLIVE, SAMUEL FOOTE, EDMUND KEAN, COLLEY CIBBER, and a whole host of names classic on the boards of Old Drury. Under ???riple heading of "Actors, Authors and Audiences," Dr. DORAN leaves no corner of theatrical history unvisited that could add to the completeness of his picture of the drama in England. This is traced from its origin, when the players were merely an appendage to regal state, acting by virtue of a royal patent, under the regulation and supervision of an officer of the King's household, the Lord Chamberlain, to the year 1843, when "their Majesties servants" became a formality only, and free trade in the drama was established. Dr. DORAN'S style is objectionable as being too obtrusively vivacious; he is nothing if not piquant, and can scarcely repeat the witticism of another without barbina the arrow and sharpening the point." (New York Times, November 9th, 1864).English Theatrical Literature, 857.
