With the support of Charles Cockerell and the Society of Dilettanti, he returned to carry out a detailed measurement of the Parthenon and the other monuments, which he published in his "An investigation of the Principles of Athenian Architecture." He was appointed "Surveyor to the Fabric" of St Paul's Cathedral in London (that is, architect responsible for the completion and maintenance of the building) in 1852, and retained this post until he retired, in his 80th year, in 1897. He was an excellent painter of watercolours, being taught the art by Peter de Wint, and also a keen astronomer

Lengthy autograph endorsement and a note signed ("L. P.") on a letter from Dr. G. Rauch.

Lisbon, 8. IX. 1888. - Small folio (267 x 210 mm). 3 pp. In the present letter, Dr. Rauch requests permission to visit Pasteur's laboratories to examine the discoveries made by one M. Gamaleia in hopes of making a contribution to his work and that of Pasteur. Rauch explains he has had extensive experience with diseases in warm countries, citing two cholera epidemics in Toulon and Algeria and proceeds to list his medical qualifications. He notes he would particularly like to participate in M. Gamaleia s experiments in the endemic field and feels confident that the Minister of the Navy will release him to do so, if accepted. At the foot of the third page of the letter, Pasteur replies in full from Arbois on 12 September 1888: "Honored Sir and Doctor, As soon as Monsieur Gamaleia has returned to Paris I will hasten to communicate your interesting letter to him. The latter is dated from Lisbon; are you returning on the Brest route, and when? Would you be able to come and see me on your way to Paris where I would perhaps have already returned? We could talk without too much inconvenience to you, about your wishes. Yours truly, L. P." (transl.). A further note in Pasteur's hand is found at the head of the first page of the letter: "To be shown to M. Gamaleia as soon as he arrives. L. P. 12 September 1888". - A fine letter demonstrating Pasteur s great willingness for collaboration between doctors and scientists.

        PIONEER DAYS ON PUGET SOUND

C.B. Bagley, Printer, 1888, 1888. 6 3/4" x 4 3/4" in brown printed boards with title in silver. 83 pp., errata. Pioneer Arthur A. Denny writes about the early days of Seattle as he remembers cabins and sawmills, steamboats on the Sound, Indians, soldiers and settlers. Denny was the leading founder of the town of Seattle. In 1851 he left Illinois and migrated westward with his family and acquaintances, intending to settle in the Willamette Valley. Hearing about the area around Puget Sound, the Denny Party sailed from Portland, landed at Alki Point in November 1851, and four months later staked claim to land along the eastern shore of Elliott Bay, in what would become the city of Seattle. A surveyor by trade, Denny helped lay out the real estate that formed a large part of the pioneer economy. He served as postmaster, merchant, banker, and legislator. Over the course of his life, Denny witnessed or participated in most of the key events in early Seattle history to include the founding in 1851-52, the Indians’ attack on Seattle in 1856, the creation and siting of the University of Washington in the early 1860s, the courtship of railroad companies during the 1870s, and the labor unrest and anti-Chinese movement of the 1880s. In 1843 Denny married Mary Ann Boren, and together they had six children. Mary Ann Denny neatly wrote on the rear free endpaper, “Mrs. Dullie Miller from Mrs. Mary A. Denny, June 11, 1905." A fine copy.

London: Macmillan and Co. and New York, 1888 - Octavo (170 × 114 mm). Original publisher's cloth, lettered in black. Spine ends a tiny bit faded, but a crisp clean copy in excellent condition. With 10 folding plates and numerous figures in the text. Jesuit library stamp to half title and title. First edition of Wicksteed's first work. Fundamentally a basic textbook of new economics, it did much to popularise the adjective "marginal" and the term "marginal analysis" and received the approbation of both Edgeworth and Pareto. Batson calls it "a very valuable little work which aims at providing a thorough mathematical explanation of the 'fundamental propositions of the theory of value'" (p. 60).         ORIGINAL DRAWING WITH TEMPERA AND GOUACHE WITH CERTIFICATES AND ORIGIN OF VINCENT VAN GOGH 1888

1888 DIBUJO ORIGINAL CON TEMPERA Y GOUACHE SOBRE PAPEL CON CERTIFICADOS Y PROCEDENCIA DE VINCENT VAN GOGH 1888. 25X18. ORIGINAL DIBUJANDO EL PAISAJE DESDE LA VENTANA DE SU ULTIMA RESIDENCIA ANTES DE SU MUERTE Y A LA MANERA PICTORICA DE VINCENT VAN GOGH. EXTREMADAMENTE RARO. REF PICS 1. Excelente.

Lengthy autograph endorsement and a note signed ("L. P.") on a letter from Dr. G. Rauch.

Lisbon, 8. IX. 1888.. Small folio (267 x 210 mm). 3 pp..

        Solferino. Mining Town N.S.W

Sydney: Phillip-Stephan, 1888. Coloured photolithograph, 283 x 352 mm; short tear and a few spots in margin, but a good copy, mounted. An unusual photolithographic view of the mining town of Solferino. "The inventors of the Process [of making a lithograph from a photograph] are Samuel Phillip and Adam Stephan... a photographer, and a lithographic printer. For some three years past, they have, in a cellar situated in Woolloomooloo, worked hard and continuously to perfect this discovery, which combines the knowledge of both trades..." (Ferguson, quoting from one of their portfolios). The results of the process are fairly bizarre: most of the prints have a distinctly surreal quality. Phillip and Stephan produced a series of landscapes, based mainly on photographs by Caire, Lindt, and Bayliss, which could be bought separately, while some were sold in sets. The company continued until 1910.This view of the famous mining town of Solferino is of particular interest for its details of miners' dwellings.

Anatomici summi septemdecim tabulae quas nunc primum edit atque explicat iisque alias addit de structura mammarum et de tunica testis vaginali.Parma: [Giambattista Bodoni for] Regia typographia, 1775. First edition.

A very fine copy. "The book is one of the finest anatomies of the eighteenth century because of its excellent illustrations and comprehensive commentary." (<i>Heirs of Hippocrates</i>). It is also one of the rarest of the few medical books printed at the celebrated Bodoni Press in Parma, as well as one of the few medical books issued by a private press. <br/><br/> ❧Norman 1888; Garrison-Morton 399.1; <i>Heirs of Hippocrates</i> 788; Pincus 248. <br/><br/> "Santorini was generally acknowledged as the outstanding anatomist of his time. Many corrections and discoveries in the detailed anatomy of the different organs of the human body go back to Santorini. Even today a facial muscle (risorius), a pair of cartilages (comicula) of the larynx, the emissary veins of the skull, and a part of the superior and inferior turbinates of the ethmoid are named after Santorini. <br/><br/> The work belongs to the best of its time, not only as regards the dissections and illustrations, but also as to the very elaborate commentary. Of the 21 plates 17 are by Santorini, two of the last four plates belongs to the anatomist Giovanni Battista Covoli, who was drowned, in 1768, in his youth. The other two plates belongs to the editor, Michael Girardi (1731 - 1797), a professor of anatomy in Parma, who also wrote the commentary to Santorini's plates, thus carrying out Covoli's plans. using, in part, posthumous writings of both Santorini and Covoli. All the 21 plates are done with a light crayon effect which, however, does not impair the anatomic clarity of the prints, but even brings out well the differences in the tissues. The unsigned plates were drawn by Giovanni Battista Piazetta (1682 - 1754). A woman, Florentia Marcella, engraved Santorini's plates under his personal supervision. Girardi's two plates are signed and were drawn by Ignazio Gasparetti and engraved by Giuseppe Patrini. The pictures deal with the facial muscles, the base and other parts of the brain, the organs of smell and hearing, the pharynx, the breasts, the heart, the diaphragm with the beginning of the thoracic duct, the stomach, the liver, the intestines, the pancreas, the ileocecal valve, the bladder, the muscles of the perineum, and the genitals. Covoli's plates represent the breasts, the tunics of the testicle and a six months' fetus." (Hagelin, <i>Rare and Important Medical Books</i>, pp. 112-113).. Folio (325 x 235 mm), pp. [10], i-xxxv [1], 1-217 [3] and 42 beautifully engraved plates, contemporary half vellum, marbled baords, a very fine and fresh copy, entirely unrestored. Rare in such good condition
