        Confessions of a Young Man

Swan Sonnenschein, Lowrey, & Co, London 1888 - Hardcover. First Edition. Author's presentation copy inscribed to his brother, "To Maurice Moore from George Moore." While Moore presentation copies are not hard to find, signicant ones inscribed at the time of publication rarely appear on the market. Tipped in at back is an autograph letter from Moore to editor and writer C. Lewis Hind. George Moore (1852-1933) was an Irish novelist, poet, critic, and dramatist who is often regarded as the first great modern Irish novelist. His younger brother Maurice (1854-1938) was also an author as well as a soldier and politician. He was a founding member of the Irish Free State. Maurice was the dedicatee of Esther Waters in 1894. Despite this, relations between the two brothers were troubled through most of their lives. The one page autograph letter to Hinds, dated June 18, 1900 is in regard to the possible reprinting of Esther Waters. He thanks Hind for his kind mention of the book and says that he read two "excellent artices in your paper." Bound in original cloth with pictorial illustration of a young woman on the cover. Spine somewhat darkened as usual, corners of book and spine bumped but still nice. Hinges tender but otherwise in very good condition. Tipped in is an advertisement for Moore's Parnell and His Island. Housed in a grey cloth chemise and quarter leather slipcase in very good condition. 357 pages. LIT/080315.         Manuscript & Photo Archive - Greek Antiquity - Excavation Glass Lantern Slides & Documentation from His Personal Estate - All Text in German, Except One in French

Greece, 1888. Troy - Tiryns - Mycenae - Epidaurus - Thermopylae - Athens - Olympia Greece, Italy, circa 1880 - 1955. Archive of glass slide photographs, documents and correspondence, pertaining to the work of leading German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld dedicated to Greek antiquity, featuring from his personal estate, 117 glass lantern slides of his excavations, some showing him at the ancient sites; a set of photographic negatives of Tiryns and of Dörpfeld; 4 printed works by Dörpfeld in original wrappers. Together with 3 accounts concerning Dörpfeld written by other authors, also in original wrappers; 1 printed bibliographical list of Dörpfeld's published works; 6 newspaper articles. Together with typescript draft copies of a posthumous bibliography by Peter Goessler, and 7 signed letters relating to the same, one of which is in manuscript, all of which are signed in the original. All text is in German, with one exception, a single offprint being in French. Printed documents range in size from 8vo. to Qto, news press articles being larger. Most glass slides measure approximately 8.5 x 10 cm; a few are slightly larger; several with manuscript captions. The lot housed in 11 labeled cardstock boxes, in original condition as kept and organised by Dörpfeld in his library. [A scant few slides are not in boxes]. Occasional annotations and folds to documents, one glas slide border tape loose, otherwise the lot in very good condition, clean and bright, a pleasing commemorative archive with especially scarce lantern slide views. Needing no introduction owing to his worldwide recognition and respect, though worthy of infinite accolades, Wilhelm Dörpfeld (1853-1940), a man of distinction celebrated then and still now, created his legacy by setting a standard of order, integrity and careful conservation in the field of archaeology. He also developed a stratigraphic method of dating ancient sites. He is most famous for his extensive work on Bronze Age sites around the Mediterranean, such as Tiryns and Hisarlik (the site of the legendary city of Troy), beginning excavation there with Heinrich Schliemann in 1882. Dörpfeld also excavated at Pergamon, Tiryns, the Acropolis and Agora of Athens. Highlights from the archive are as follows: Dörpfeld's personal collection of 117 glass lantern slides illustrating his dig sites, most significant research, travel and discoveries. Dörpfeld is seen in a few of the photographs. Well organized, the contents of the boxes are labeled in manuscript, and contain views of the following: • Greek Theatre • Ancient Sport and Sport theatres • Certosa. Naples-Pompeii-Capri-Syracuse • Messenion. Tiryns. Mycenae. Epidaurus. • Samos. Chanak-Troy • Athens (excluding acropolis) • Thermopylae. Athens: Acropolis • Aegina. Corinth. • Corfu and Venice • Olympia... Access to the Stadium, etc. • Crete (Knossos). Rhodes. 1934. Four (4) printed works published by Dörpfeld, each in original wrappers and dating from 1905 to 1938, including a treatise on Leucas, two unique accounts on ancient Troy, and a summary of his own work for the Greek Archaeological Society. Assorted publications about Dörpfeld dating between 1931 and 1952, including a bibliographical list of Dörpfeld's writings, a biography by Ernst Meyer (1888-1968), and press announcements regarding his important discoveries in the 1930s and his death in 1940. Several letters from 1943-34 dealing with a biography about Dörpfeld later published by Professor Peter Goessler, as well as a preliminary typescript by Goessler. [Peter Goessler (1872-1956) was a German pre-historian and conservationist of antiquities. From July 1902 to September 1903 he traveled to the eastern Mediterranean region and came to know Wilhelm Dörpfeld. Throughout the following three decades he assisted Dörpfeld with his work on the island of Lefkada, or Leukas, and, in 1951 he published a biography dedicated to Dörpfeld's accomplished career.] Very Good.

[Large Cabinet Photograph]: Girls' Chemistry Class 1888

Albumen photograph mount on thick card. Measuring 8.5" x 6.5". Corners of the card mounted a little rubbed, still overall fine. Identified in ink on the verso: "Class of Girls in Laboratory Winter of 1888. English High School. Taken by J. Guild." Excellent portrait of 14 girls wearing protective smocks posed in a chemistry lab with rows of bottles and labeled test tubes behind them. Most, or perhaps all of them hold an assortment of chemical implements: mortar and pestle, chemical bottles, test tubes, beakers, and glass containers. A deep and rich and very unusual image, early images of woman in scientific settings are exceedingly uncommon. .

The Century Co, New York 1888 - Second issue in the brown cloth binding with gilt stamping and beveled boards, all page edges gilt. A solid Near Fine copy with only the most trivial wear at the spine ends and previous ownership markings on the front end paper. A Good only dust jacket with large chips from the spine ends (approx. 1.5 - 2" deep), a few tears at the flap folds (professionally closed), age toning as expected, but a complete and rather uncommon early dust jacket. The first major work illustrated by Frederick Remington, who up until that point had only sketched for magazines. Remington would go on to become one of the most prominent artists of the American West. The book is based on Roosevelt's experiences ranching in the Dakota Badlands during the cattle boom of the 1880s. The book documents his everyday routine, herding, hunting and working the ranch, as well as his extraordinary exploits such as the capture of three outlaws and guarding them for 40 straight hours without sleep, while transporting them to trial. A fantastic early account of western life by an American icon and one closely associated with the tough western lifestyle. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

Correspondence on the Subject of Teaching the Vernacular in Indian Schools, 1887-88

Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1888. First Edition. Pamphlet Pamphlet. Very Good. 27 pages. The federal document giving the 'true intent and meaning' of the federal ban, put in place in 1887, on the use of Indian languages in both mission and government-run schools for Native Americans. The ban was issued as part of the 1887 report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. This ban was a concerted attempt by the US government to undermine and ultimately destroy Native culture, but Commissioner Atkins' initial rule brought much controversy. This pamphlet, addressed to Indian agents, reprints some of the letters Atkins received, and his replies and explanations. He modified the ban to mollify Christian missionaries working on the reservations. He offers an an exception for 'the vernacular to be used in missionary schools, only for oral instruction in morals and religion, where it is deemed to be an auxiliary to the English language in conveying such instruction.' But Atkins also restates his reasoning: '[T]he intention is to prevent the waste of valuable time by Indian children in schools learning a barbarous tongue which is not comprehensive enough to embrace civilization or to comprehend it.' A century later, in 1990, President George Bush signed the Indian Languages Act, reversing the federal policy and giving the govenment an obligation to support the preservation and survival of Native American languages. A scarce and important (and chilling) publication. Worldcat locates about 15 copies, only one in the West, at Huntington. First edition (first printing). Minor chipping and creasing to front wrapper, else very good.

Meiji Kaisei Tokyo Zenzu. (Revised Meiji Map of Tokyo)

Tokyo.: Koshodo.. Meiji 21. 1888.. Copperplate engraved map with woodblock color, 20 x 28 1/2 inches on sheet 20 1/2 x 29 inches, folding to 6 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches. Several small repaired worm holes, a few without repairs, light wear, overall clean and bright. A particularly appealing Meiji Japanese map of Tokyo, apparently geared to the tourist trade as well as to the Japanese visitor, with names of the districts marked on the map and the legend in both kanji and English. There is an unusual inset (6 x 8 1/2 inches) of Yokohama at upper left. The map is surrounded by small vignette scenes. Most interestingly, contained within the yellow border between the images and the map is the description (in Japanese) for a 4 day walking tour of Tokyo. To the right of the compass rose is a schedule for trains leaving from Ueno and Maibashi. The inset at lower left corner shows the train schedule Tokyo - Yokohama, and the price for each stage of the journey. The inset at the lower right corner is a listing of municipal and rural districts. Beneath the map at lower right is the publisher Koshodo, followed by the characters for copper engraving (dosen). A wealth of detailed information! The Imperial Palace is misspelled as 'Emperil Palace.' .

Poems and Ballads of Young Ireland 1888

Dublin: M. H. Gill and Son,, 1888. Small octavo (163 x 99 mm). Contemporary presentation dark green morocco, gilt ruled spine, two-line gilt border on sides enclosing single-line gilt border with shamrocks at the top corners, all edges gilt, yellow coated endpapers. A touch of foxing here and there. An excellent copy, with the half-title. First edition of Yeats's first contribution to a book, and in the Yeats canon preceded only by the exceedingly rare Mosada (1886) and preceding The Wanderings of Oisin (1889). Yeats contributed four poems, two of which appear in print for the first time: the wonderful The Stolen Child, and Love Song (From the Gaelic); the other two had previously appeared in magazines: King Goll (Third Century) and The Meditation of the Old Fisherman. Presentation copy from Yeats's "intimate enemy", T. W. Rolleston, inscribed on a preliminary blank: "E. M. de Burgh from T. W. Rolleston. March, 1888". We believe this to be the earliest recorded presentation copy. Wade mentions a presentation copy "from Count Plunkett, one of the contributors, to his wife, [bearing] the date 1st May, 1888". Copac records just 3 locations in British and Irish institutional libraries (British Library, Cambridge, Trinity College Dublin: 2 copies), and although OCLC notes another three dozen locations worldwide this little book is decidedly scarce. Thomas William Rollaston (1857-1920), Irish writer, literary figure, translator, and contributor to Poems and Ballads of Young Ireland, had a checkered relationship with Yeats. However, things came to a head in the early 1890s, when Yeats lost the editorship of the series entitled the New Irish Library to Sir Charles Gavan Duffy. He blamed Rolleston for backstairs machinations and, according to Norman Jeffares, "Yeats never forgave Rolleston, [and blamed himself] for having been over-impressed by him" (W. B. Yeats: A New Biography, 2001, p. 54). The recipient is Ernest Macartney de Burgh (1863-1929) Dublin-born civil engineer, who emigrated to Australia in 1885 and became Chief Engineer for Harbours and Water Supply in New South Wales (see ADB). The bookplate of Constance de Burgh on the front pastedown, is most probably, on stylistic grounds, that of his daughter. On a terminal blank is a note, probably by de Burgh, quoting a letter from Rolleston (dated April 15th 1888) explaining that one of the contributors using the pseudonym "An Chraoibhin Aoibhinn" is Douglas Hyde (1860-1949), later first President of Ireland from 1838 to 1945. "W. B. Yeats's own ventures into anthology work began with the collaborative volume Poems and Ballads of Young Ireland, published by Gill in 1888 at a price of Is. 6d., with a paper-covered sixpence edition following in June 1890. Although credited to Yeats in many library catalogues, this was a collaborative effort involving Yeats, Rose Kavanagh, Ellen O'Leary, John Todhunter, T. W. Rolleston, and Douglas Hyde, with Katharine Tynan as the driving force behind the project and John O'Leary in an advisory role" (Margaret Kelleher in The Oxford History of the Irish Book, volume IV: The Irish Book in English 1800-1891, 2011, p. 457). A superb copy of an important volume in the history of 19th and 20th century Irish literature.

The Happy Prince and Other Tales

London: David Nutt 1888 - Illustrated by Walter Crane and Jacomb Hood. First edition. One of 1,000 copies. Paper covered boards, with an illustration by Hood to the front board in black, decoratively lettered in red. An excellent copy, with some light rubbing to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, a few tiny chips to the spine head, a few spots of light soiling to the otherwise bright boards, minor crease to the rear board, tiny split to the paper hinge inside the front cover, otherwise tight and sturdy binding with bright and clean pages. Overall, a lovely and unsophisticated copy of an extremely fragile book. Housed in a custom folding box. Mason 313. The Happy Prince and Other Tales is a collection of fairy tales and fables, including "The Happy Prince," "The Nightingale and the Rose," "The Selfish Giant," "The Devoted Friend," and "The Remarkable Rocket." Although they are primarily geared toward children, the stories in this volume are laden with Wilde's signature wit and have a melancholy and sometimes sarcastic undertone. This volume is beautifully illustrated in black and white by Walter Crane and Jacomb Hood. Specifically, Crane illustrated the full-page plates (including the frontispiece), and Hood created the in-text illustrations for the chapter headings and the front cover.
