New York and San Francisco: J. Dewing Pubishing Company, (1888). original light blue gray cloth, pictorially stamped and lettered in black, patterned endpapers. Covers a bit dust soiled, some more than others, a few with “nibbled” edges, a few with smudging, a few plates with some foxing in the margins, perhaps 6-7 plates in all, else interior fine. Folio. Ten parts: [xii] [1] 2 - 478 pp “Illustrated with etchings, photogravures, wood engravings, etc. by eminent artists” -these include Harry Fenn, Thomas Hill, William Keith, Thomas Moran and Frederic Remington. There are 120 full page plates with other illustrations in the text There were many different issues of this publication and the variations are numerous and confusing. However, this set is format “D” of the reprint formats. In addition to editing this series, Muir wrote seven of the essays. The fine etchings, photogravures, and text engravings by some of the best artists of the day are a very desirable feature of this highly collectable Muir work. Interestingly, the publisher did not bind the pages to the fragile paper spine. Perhaps it was done that way to make it easier for their patrons to remove attractive plates, all of which would be suitable for framing and displaying [Currey and Kruska 257. BAL 14744].

Royal 4to. Royal Quarto Lea and Dove Edition, with Emerson Photogravures. One of the most celebrated of photographically illustrated books, the "so-called 100th edition is a reissue of the first two parts of the fifth-edition of 1676, with the addition of a reprint of the 1883 edition of The Chronicle of the Complete Angler by Westwood and Satchell, and a list of Works referred to in The Compleat Angler after G.W. Bethune" (Coigney, p.125). Of the plates from photographs, 27 are by Emerson and 25 by Bankhart. Emerson, the father of "naturalist photography," published his treatise by that title the following year. He advised photographers to imitate the effects of nature on the eye. Influenced by the Barbizon painters, he urged photographers to see the works of these and other "impressionists" then on view in London. As Coigney notes, "In recent years P.H. Emerson works have been in great demand by photography collectors, so many copies of this edition are in photographic collections and unfortunately many volumes have been destroyed by the extraction of Emerson's photogravures." All are present here, as are the rest of the illustrations. With an ALS from Fanny Marston and another from her husband to Miss Leila Smith on the occasion of her marriage in 1897.         Four Page Autograph Letter Signed, written to Michael Anagnos when Keller was Seven Years Old

Four page Autograph Letter Signed ("Helen A. Keller"). Four leaves, each approximately 7" x 9" painstakingly lettered in pencil on rectos only. Old folds from mailing, a couple of folds have been lightly and professionally strengthened on the versos. One of the earliest letters written by Keller, when she was just seven years old, sent from her Tuscumbia, Alabama home. The letter is written to Michael Anagnos, the Director of the Perkins Institute for the Blind. Anagnos had sent Anne Sullivan to Tuscumbia to teach Keller how to speak, read, and write. It was only the previous summer that Anne Sullivan had arrived at the Keller home to begin working with the young deaf and blind girl. Within a few months of working with Sullivan, Helen's vocabulary had increased to hundreds of words and simple sentences. Sullivan taught Helen how to read Braille and raised type, and to print block letters. This letter, dated "May 3rd, [1888]" is published in full in Keller's autobiography The Story of My Life (p.154-155), which features a selection of her letters written between 1887 and 1901. Later in the same month that she wrote this letter, Keller left for Boston to study at Perkins, where she would stay until 1894. The earliest of Keller's letters are mere sentence-long fragments. This is the eleventh letter (including fragments) published in The Story of My Life, and the third that she wrote to Anagnos. As the text of her autobiography displays, it is one of the first fully realized letters that she had written. The full text of the letter, in large block print, as follows:Tuscumbia, Ala. May 3d.Dear Mr. Anagnos,I am glad to write to you this morning because I love you very much. I was very happy to receive pretty book and nice candy and two letters from you. I will come to see you soon and I will ask you many questions about countries and you will love good child.Mother is making me pretty new dresses to wear in Boston and I will look lovely to see little girls and boys and you.Friday teacher and I went to a picnic with little children. We played games and ate dinner under the trees and we found ferns and wild flowers. I walked in the woods and learned names for many trees. There are poplar and cedar and pine and oak and ash and hickory and maple trees. They make a pleasent shade and the little birds love to sing sweetly up in the tree. Rabbits hop and squirrels run and ugly snakes do crawl in the woods. Geraniums and roses jasmines and japonicas are cultivated flowers. I help mother and teacher water them every night before supper. Cousin Arthur made me a swing in the ash tree. Aunt Ev. has gone to Memphis. Uncle Frank is here. He is picking strawberries for dinner.Nancy [inserted here in another hand are the words "a doll"] is sick again. New teeth do make her ill. Adeline is well and she can go to Cincinnati Monday with me.Aunt Ev. will send me a boy doll. Harry will be Nancy's and Adeline's brother.Wee sister is a good girl. I am tired now and I do want to go down-stairs. I send many kisses and hugs with letter.Your darling child,Helen A. KellerA truly remarkable letter from the seven year old Keller who served and still serves as an inspiration for generations of Americans. Keller's papers, including most of her early letters, are held in the Archives of the Perkins School. This is a rare exception. The only Keller letter of this vintage or earlier of which we are aware in the marketplace, is a considerably shorter letter sent to Alexander Graham Bell in November, 1887 (also published in My Life), which sold at Christie's for $41,125 in 2001. .

Le rêve EDITION ORIGINALE ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE

Paris: Charpentier, 1888. Fine. Charpentier, Paris 1888, 11x18cm, relié. - Original edition. Binding half fir sorrow, back with five nerves set with black nets, marbled paper plates, guards and contreplats of handmade paper, printed stamp of the Julia-Alphonse Daudet library on the first guard. Important autograph signed by the author Alphonse Daudet. Some spots. If they have crossed before, Zola truly Daudet discovered in 1873 after reading his stories Monday, "a continual amazement," "flawless purity," he reports in L'Avenir national. These stories inspired the Franco-Prussian War deeply marked Zola: "All our disasters of 1870 are, in six pages. "Anticipation, according to Henri Mitterand Médan Evenings and beyond, the Debacle. (See Zola Volume II p. 157). From this first article, Zola has with Daudet stormy but unbreakable friendship nurtured by mutual admiration. Evidenced by the many studies they are engaged in the press throughout their lives. Around Charpentier, their joint editor, the two writers are therefore Provencal with their elders, Flaubert and Turgenev Goncourt, a literary circle that will dominate the French novel in the second half of the century. The "dinners of Five" initially "dinners whistled authors" (referring to their woes theatrical) form the basis of loyalty and solidarity which, although qu'émaillée artistic rivalries and battles of ideas, had until they died. Beyond friendship, it's a real brotherhood in arms that unites these writers for whom literature is more than aesthetic adventure. As recalled Zola in his tribute to Daudet: "If I had to assign a definitive place to Daudet, I would say he has been at the forefront of the sacred phalanx who fought the good fight for truth in this second half of the century. This will be the glory of this century to have walked to the truth by the most colossal work than ever century has accomplished. Daudet and has been with us all among the bravest and boldest. [...] His work [...] is one [...] of the extensive investigation continued by our generation, it will remain as a key witness, solid and logical continuation of company documents Stendhal and Balzac, Flaubert and Goncourt left. » after them, many writers claim to this need for truth requires writing a mission: to compel the literature to join the modern world and to bring out the raw material. Aware of this responsibility, more of the five base their own circle. Zola, it is the Soirees de Medan to Goncourt and Daudet, Grenier and future Academy. But the true heirs of this school of modernity will mainly Proust and Celine. The first, direct heir of Daudet, the second spiritual son of The Dram and La Debacle ... This struggle between Zola and his peers was not without consequence. A year before the publication of the Dream, the "Manifesto of the Five" virulent pamphlet against Zola written by some regulars Grenier, and probably inspired by Goncourt and Daudet, almost had because of their friendship. This is a friendly dedication on Earth, the offending novel in the pamphlet, Zola testifies to Daudet's desire for reconciliation (cf. Mitterrand t. II, p. 861). Some letters and dinners later, this second friendly dedication on Dream truly marks the end of the last blurs the two writers. Ten years later, Zola, the ultimate witness to the great naturalist adventure they have initiated together, composed for the funeral of his "dearly loved friend" a moving tribute to "the writer who worked so hard, the man who so suffered, my brother twice consecrated by the genius and pain! » - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale. »

GULISTAN OR ROSE GARDEN OF SA'DI, Faithfully Translated into English

Benares Printed by the Kama Shastra Society for Private Subscribers Only 1888 - First Edition, printed for private subscribers only. 8vo, bound in publisher’ s original full stiff vellum with gilt ruled and lettered spine, the covers bevelled and with blind ruled borders. viii, 282 pp. An excellent copy, fine and very well preserved with some light and of course, expected mellowing to the white vellum. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT BURTON ITEM, and according to Penzer (p. 177), the distinction between the first and second issue of the book is only the presence of the date on the spine. As a possible indication of this book's scarcity, Penzer quotes 17 sale room prices for Burton's KAMA SUTRA, 10 for the ANANGA RANGA, 26 for the PERFUMED GARDEN, but only three for the GULISTAN. The Persian poet Sa’di wrote "The Rose Garden" in 1258. It has readership throughout Asia and Africa, and has been translated into Latin, English, French, German, and Dutch. The Kama Shastra Society wished to introduce the first complete and unexpurgated translation into English, and succeeded in issuing a work of elegance and simplicity. The text includes chapters on the morals of Dervishes, the advantages of Silence, on love and old age, and on rules of conduct in life. An important edition of this Persian Classic. Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) was a renowned writer and social reformer. She is most often remembered for her semi-autobiographical work "The Yellow Wallpaper", written after a severe bout of postpartum depression. The present volume is her first book. While she did not hide her authorship, the fact that it was published under her married name has always led to some confusion. In addition to her writings, she was a fervent suffragette and generally called for an increased role for women in society. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
