Artists: Wang An-chieh, Wang Mi-ts' ao & Wang Ssu-chih. This is the most important book on the art of Chinese painting. Originally published in 1679-1818, was basically a set of four volumes, each volume had several numbered "books" within, each devoted to a different topic. This edition was nicely printed with Sumi or black ink against white paper. * The work begins with the Six Principles, standards and the rules of painting: The Six Canons, Six Essentials, Three Faults, Twelve Things to Avoid, Three Classes, divisions of schools &c., notes on the preparation of colors & materials. It begins with orchids, grasses, bamboo, discussion of the fundamentals of bamboo. Book of plum, with a testimonial for examples. Book of chrysanthemum, insects, & flowering plants. Examples of herbaceous plants. Rocks & scholar's rocks, outdoor rock and landscapes, crags, people, scholars, poets, sages, birds, pavilions, bridges, architecture &c. This set is comprised of three parts, each part has 4 volumes, for a total of 12 volumes in all, which completes the set. ***** The volumes contain: Part I: Preface to the first [1796] edition; fundamentals of painting; book of trees; book of rocks; book of Jen-wu. * Part II: preface to the complete edition of 1701; book of orchid, bamboo, plum and chrysanthemum. * Part III: Book of grasses, insects, and flowering plants; feathers & fur and flowering plants; concluding notes on the preparation of colors. This part comes in a indigo-blue folding Chuan case with ivory clasps. * For a valuable account of this superb work, see: Mai-Mai Sze: THE TAO OF PAINTING: A Study of the Ritual Disposition of Chinese Painting, translation of the Chieh Tzu Yuan Hua Chuan, or Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting. This fine reference gives the exact contents of each book as well as color examples & bibliographic data. * It is quite difficult to find this work in its complete state, as most have been separated and many illustration framed. A major contribution to the study of Chinese landscape, flower & painting, and the inspiration for the Japanese to begin color woodblock printing for their Ukiyo-e period. This work has been used by students since 1679 as a lesson & guide book on the art of Chinese brush painting, and is still now, some 300 years later know as the Classic on Chinese Painting. * THIS SET'S FORMAT: Part 1, 2 are in the larger format, printed 1888; part 3 smaller, and is printed in Japan in 1878. The work is profusely illustrated in b.w. while the last 2 volumes are color illustrated in part 3. Mixed set, in lovely condition. ************ BIBLIOGRAPHY: K.         THE AUTOCRAT OF THE BREAKFAST TABLE. EVERY MAN HIS OWN BOSWELL

Houghton, Mifflin and Company, Boston 1888 - Octavo (5" x 7-1/2") in original gilt-decorated green cloth. A Grolier American 100 book. This copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front blank: "Harold C. Ernst/with the kind regards of/Oliver Wendell Holmes./August 7th 1888." Laid in is an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED from the author to Dr. Ernst dated 28 February 1891 thanking him for a lecture he sent to Holmes and asking Ernst to keep him informed of the progress in the new department in which he is involved. In full: "I am much obliged to you for your interesting Lecture which I sat down and read as soon as I received it. Therefore you should continue to keep us all informed from time to time of the progress making in this wonderful new department of science to which you are directing yourself." Holmes may be referring to a meeting of the New York Academy of Medicine on 16 October 1890 when Ernst spoke on the rabies virus and vaccination. (Louis Pasteur and Emile Roux developed the first rabies vaccine in 1885.) Apparently a copy that was once owned by Holmes himself as his bookplate is on the front pastedown. Laid in is a 1980 receipt from a bookseller selling each of these two items separately for one hundred and fifty dollars each. Dr. Harold C. Ernst was first a star pitcher on the baseball team at Harvard and later a professor of bacteriology and pathology at Harvard Medical School. In 1919 he was the first recipient in America of the Gold-Headed Cane Award. Contents clean; mild rubbing to spine tips. Near Fine [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The president not being present, and the following directors were found present.Benj Guggenheim.Richard Clive. There not being directors enough present to constitute a quorum, the meeting was adjourned.R. Clive V.P.Att. Benj Guggenheim Secty. Historical Background Benjamin Guggenheim (1865-1912) was born in Philadelphia as the fifth of the seven sons of the wealthy Meyer Guggenheim. When Benjamin was twenty, he began managing the family's silver-mining operation in Leadville, Colorado, where he received his nick name the "Silver Prince." While in Leadville, Benjamin first saw the great potential of the smelting industry. With his family's backing, Benjamin built the first smelting plant in Pueblo, Colorado, and established the Philadelphia Smelting and Refining Company. Following the first plant's enormous success, several more plants were built around the United States. The company's mining and smelting silver, lead, and copper proved profitable and became the focus of the Guggenheim family's business. Benjamin and the rest of his family were brought incredible wealth by the success of the company. At the time of his death, Benjamin was estimated to be worth around $95,000,000.Benjamin originally planned to return from Europe on the Lusitania, but the trip was cancelled due to repairs needed on the ship. He then purchased a first-class ticket for the maiden voyage of the Titanic. When the ship famously collided with the iceberg, Benjamin and his secretary changed into their warmest clothes and put on life jackets. After seeing the scene unfold Benjamin and his secretary are reported to have refused their spots on a life boat and instead helped women and children into the remaining boats. "We've dressed up our best," Benjamin allegedly said, "and are prepared to go down like gentlemen."

        Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth.

London: Vizetelly & Co.,, 1888. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in red and ruled in black, patterned endpapers. Wood-engraved portrait frontispiece of Tolstoy. W. H. Smith embossed stamp on front free endpaper. Spine toned, light bump at fore-edge of front cover, front inner hinge just slightly shaken. A very good copy. First UK edition of the complete trilogy in English; the translation, by I. F. Hapgood, was originally published at New York by T. Y. Crowell in 1886. Uncommon: Copac locates just two copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (Cambridge, London Library), OCLC adds another eight copies worldwide (including Scotland but this would appear to be a confusion with the edition of 1862). Tolstoy's autobiographical trilogy, first published in three volumes as Detstvo (1852), Otrochestvo (1854) and Yunost' (1856), was the work that first brought him literary acclaim. The earliest English translation, of Childhood and Boyhood only, was that of Malwida von Meysenbug (London: Bell & Daldy 1862), described by Sadleir as "very scarce".

Autograph letter signed "Ch. Gounod" to the celebrated Italian soprano Adelina Patti.

3 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated Sunday morning, January 6, [18]89. In purple ink. In French (with translation). Gounod praises Patti for her performance of the role of Juliette in his opera, Roméo and Juliette. Amidst some intrigue, he negotiates with the directors of the Paris Opéra to secure future engagements there for Patti. "... Without a cough, which has forced me to stay in bed, it is I who planned to embrace you at the train station and tell you again... how delighted I was by the charm you exuded in the interpretation of such a delicate and poignant role as Juliette!" Slightly worn, soiled, foxed and stained; creased at folds; tears to edges and central portion professionally repaired, with no loss to text; remnants of transparent tape just affecting first letter of address (the "C" of "Chère"), with corresponding small abrasion to blank area of central fold. Together with a vintage postcard photograph of the composer. . On November 28, 1888, Gounod conducted the first of a celebrated series of performances of his Roméo and Juliette at the Paris Opéra. These performances featured Jean de Reszke (1850-1925) and Adelina Patti (1843-1919) in the title roles, and included the additions of the Act III finale and a ballet for Act IV. Renowned for her amazing purity of tone, vocal flexibility, and remarkable acting abilities, Patti excelled in the roles of Amina, Lucia, Violetta, Norina, and Rosina, and later, Semiramide, Marguerite, Leonora and Aida. Bern 15. Nov. 1887 (Bde. 1 u. 2) bzw. ?Herrn Oberst Wassmer G.? (Nachtrag) ?vom Verfasser R. Schmidt, Oberst? ?? ? Gottlieb Wassmer (1852?1929), von Aarau.
