Launhardt, [Carl Friedrich] Wilhelm.
1887. 8vo. 2 vols. IV, 112 pp. VIII, (2), 259, (1) pp. With a total of 42 figures in the text. Contemporary purple half cloth over marbled boards with giltstamped spine title. First (vol. 1: second) edition. - Launhardt began his career as a civil engineer, later becoming professor at the Technical University in Hanover and its first rector. A specialist in the technology and economics of road and railway transportation, he gradually applied his insights to the more general problems of transportation networks. His fame as an economist is chiefly based upon his "Mathematische Begründung der Volkswirthschaftslehre" (1885), which gave Launhardt a prominent place in the history of economic analysis. His work is characterized as "Germany's most important and in fact only significant contribution to the 'marginal revolution' in the last three decades of the 19th century. In the economic analysis of transportation and location, this contribution was not surpassed until the 1930s. Available only in German, some of it in publications that are hard to find, it still has not found the recognition it deserves, and Schumpeter's references [...] are inadequate" (New Palgrave). - The present work on the "theory of network planning" consists of two parts: the first, on "commercial network planning", is a much revised and enlarged version of an earlier publication ("Kommercielle Tracirung der Verkehrwege", 1872), containing the derivation of efficiency criteria without regard to topography. The second part, on "technical network planning for railroads", applies economic efficiency criteria … [Click Below for Full Description]

H. / 1887. Numerous commentaries have been written on Ibn Hisham al-Ansari’s "Mughni al-Labib ‘An Kutub al-‘A’arib" including this one by Musataf ‘Arafa al-Dasuqi. Ibn Hisham al-Ansari was a distinguished and renowned Arab grammarian. Born at the beginning of 8th century Hijrah, he wrote several works which are being learnt and studied even today. "Mughni al-Labib", was compiled twice by Ibn Hisham in 749 A. H. and 756 A. H. Mughni al-Labib is among the leading grammatical works, specifically in discussion of the huruf al-ma ‘ani (grammatical prepositions or particles), in addition to other aspects of grammar. The objectives of Mughni al-Labib are stated in its muqaddimah (introduction), among which are, to facilitate understanding of al-Qur’an and to simplify students’ learning of grammatical rules and questions. Further, the methodology used by Ibn Hisham in Mughni al-Labib helps students, particularly those who major in Arabic language, to understand its content. The methodology used includes a suitable selection of topics, simplified arrangement of al-huruf order, wide and detailed discussion, and accuracy of information. It is hoped that this book, Mughni al-Labib continues to receive the attention deserved in view of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Book of Wisdom.
Philadelphia, : J.B. Lippincott Co., . Excellent condition extremely rare edition (no.129 of 250 copies only) with only very minor signs of external wear.. Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Co., 1887. 25 cm x 32 cm. 47 pages. 21 illustrations in black and white. Original hardcover. Excellent condition extremely rare edition (no.129 of 250 copies only) with only very minor signs of external wear. The Song of Songs also known as the Song of Solomon, Canticles, or the Canticle of Canticles, is one of the "scrolls" (megillot) of the Writings (Ketuvim), the last section of the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible. It is also the fifth book of Wisdom in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. In Sephardic Jewish tradition, the Song of Songs is read every Friday night for the divine loving union they see in it; Ashkenazim chant it on the Sabbath during Passover, marking the beginning of the grain harvest and commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. Scripturally, the Song of Songs is unique in its celebration of sexual love. It gives "the voices of two lovers, praising each other, yearning for each other, proffering invitations to enjoy". The "daughters of Jerusalem" form a chorus to the lovers, functioning as an audience whose participation in the lovers' erotic encounters facilitates the participation of the reader. Jewish tradition reads it as an allegory of the relationship between God and Israel. Christian tradition, in addition to appreciating the literal meaning of a love song between man and woman, has read the poem as an allegory of Christ and his "bride", the Christian Church.

[12] Lose Blätter der Flora aus Adria's Tiefen (12 Loose Leaves of the Flora from Adria's Depths). [Collection of 106 specimen of algae and sponges, decoratively arranged and mounted on card-board within and around multi-coloured geometric patterns drawn with gouache and coloured pencil] S.l.: 1887. 4mo. 12 leaves of card-board with loosely enclosed protective foils made of tracing paper, in the original private portfolio covered with brown cloth and lined with white marbled paper, gilt ornamental frame fillet and title printing on front flap. Decoratively designed herbarium created probably in 1887 (as indicates the title), with 106 well preserved specimen of algae and sponges of the Adriatic Sea. The plants, all different in shape, size and colour, were skilfully arranged and mounted on card-board against the backdrop of multi-coloured geometric patterns painted with gouache and coloured pencil. Particularly noteworthy is the excellent condition and the good adhesion of the specimen, which do not crumble when moving the leaves, as it is often the case with herbaria of this kind. Edges and corners of the portfolio slightly bumped, boards of portfolio partially slightly worn, inside flaps skilfully restored and hasp renewed, overall a compact and well preserved unique collection.

On the same visit he went in 1886 to Kashmir, where silk production was in a poor state. He had ideas for its revival, which on his return home he presented to the government; eventually in 1897 he purchased in Europe large amounts of silk-worm eggs and cocoon-reeling machinery for Kashmir, which revived the silk industry there. Medina, J. T.

[Click Below for Full Description]
