Baltimore, MD: Self-published, 1887 8 pp.Only known surviving copy of first issue of William Carpenter's Flat Earth movement newsletter.         The Recollections of a Glasgow Detective Officer: with special experiences of human nature.

London: Simpkin, Marshall & Co., Edinburgh and Glasgow: John Menzies & Co., 1887(?) - Octavo. Original presentation binding of red "shingles"-patterned padded cloth, single line gilt border on sides, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Pencilled ownership inscription of "A. Jardine" on verso of front free endpaper; spine toned, a few marks to covers, scattered light foxing. A very good copy in the attractive - albeit rather vulnerable - presentation binding. Second edition, the title page verso carrying "press notices of first edition". With fine engraved presentation label presenting this copy to "William C. Coghill Esqr". William Calder Coghill (1835-1914), printer and publisher, co-founder of Aird & Coghill Ltd ("letterpress and lithographic printers") was a prominent figure in Glasgow philanthropic circles: he was a founder member of the Scottish Prohibition Society (1856), a director of The Glasgow Northern Highland Benevolent Society, a member of the Royal Philosophical Society of Glasgow and a director of the Victoria Infirmary at its establishment in 1888. Thomas P. McNaught was a detective with the Glasgow police force and his slim book focuses on what we would now call "human interest" stories, concluding with "Barmaids and fascinating fellows"; it is also cited as an early example of the police memoir: "Gradually. men who served as detectives in the police force of in Britain also began to write their memoirs, although few saw print before Sherlock Holmes made his appearance in the latter 1880s" (Emsley & Shpayer-Makov eds., Police Detectives in History, 1750-1950, 2006, p. 109). Remarkably scarce in commerce and institutionally: of this second edition Copac cites only the copy at Glasgow among British and Irish institutional libraries, with copies of the first edition at only three locations (BL, Cambridge, Scotland); OCLC adds only one copy worldwide (Museumsgesellschaft Zurich). Hubin p. 267. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Capital: A Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production

1887. First Edition . MARX, Karl. Capital: A Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production. London: Swan Sonnenschein, 1887. Two volumes. Octavo, original gilt-stamped burgundy cloth recased. Housed together in a custom clamshell box. $17,000.First edition in English of the first part of Marx’s landmark Das Kapital, the only part published in his lifetime, containing substantial revisions made by Marx for the first French translation, this two-volume work edited by Engels and translated from the third German edition. A very scarce and important printing of a seminal work in economic and political thought.Expelled from Paris in 1844, from Brussells in 1848, and from Cologne in 1849, Karl Marx moved to London where, with the loyal financial support of Frederick Engels, he endured hunger, the deaths of three children and his wife's nervous breakdown, spending most of the next two decades in the British Museum, immersed in research for his great historical analysis of capitalism. ""Marx himself modestly described Das Kapital as a continuation of his Zur Kritik des Politischen Oekonomie, 1859. It was in fact the summation of his quarter of a century's economic studies… The 'Athenaeum' reviewer of the first English translation (1887) later wrote: 'Under the guise of a critical analysis of capital, Karl Marx's work is principally a polemic against capitalists and the capitalist mode of production, and it is this polemical tone which is its chief charm.' The historical-polemical passages, with their formidable documentation from British official sources, have remained memorable; and, as Marx… wrote to Engels while the volume was still in the press, 'I hope the bourgeoisie will remember my carbuncles all the rest of their lives.' Carbuncles, financial embarrassment and political preoccupations of many kinds hampered Marx's work on Das Kapital, which he would never have completed but for the material and moral support of Engels…"" (PMM 359). ""In his funeral eulogy for Karl Marx, Engels concluded that 'Marx was above all a revolutionary… It is doubtful that any figure in history has inspired more violently contradictory opinions than Karl Marx"" (Downs, 22). ""Only this first part of Marx's magnum opus appeared in his lifetime,"" with its publication in German in 1867 (PMM 359). The remainder was constructed by Engels from Marx's posthumous papers. Containing Marx's central concept of surplus value, this first edition in English is translated from the third German edition of Moore and Aveling, is edited by Engels and incorporates substantial revisions Marx made for the first French translation (1872-5). Although Engels published the German edition of volume II in 1885, his preface notes that a translation of it without volume III was necessarily incomplete; the German edition of volume III did not appear until 1894. Draper II:M129; ST/M5. Bookplates of Manchester Reform Club with penciled notations.Interiors very fresh with only a few leaves roughly opened, closed tear to one leaf (I:337) expertly repaired, light expert restoration to original cloth.

Topografia del Maso Cantanghel presso Civezzano.

Most of the huge plates are based on one of four major volumes of Egyptian travel and antiquities from the Napoleonic era through the mid-19th century: David Roberts’ Egypt and the Holy Land, Prisse d’Avennes’ Oriental Album, Lepsius’ Denkmaler aus Agypten und Athiopen, and the Napoleon-commissioned Description de l’Egypte. Of particular beauty are the fully colored architectural reconstructions of Egyptian temples, and a splendid rendition of Cleopatra’s Needle. Mizraïm was originally issued in 12 parts in wrappers; here the parts have been bound together into two volumes, as usually found, each with its own lithographic title page. Blackmer 143.         Autograph Letter Signed while Supreme Court Justice, on personal stationery, 8vo, Washington, D. C. , Sunday ca 1940s

      - Frankfurter writes to prominent historian Samuel Eliot Morison referring to his article on Horatio Nelson. Morison (1887-1976) was a a highly regarded prolific and popular historian of maritime and American history. Commenting on Morison's article about British Naval war hero Horatio Nelson, Frankfurter writes, "Having just read your Nelson piece in the London Observer (gaily supplemented by H. Nicolson's conjugal account of the hero), I want to thank you for the pleasure of it." The jurist quotes the complimentary remark he made to his wife, Marion, and notes his early interest in maritime history having read "Mahan. " This is a reference to Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840 - 1914), who was a US naval officer and naval historian. Frankfurter continues, "you, above all, honored my interest in , and enlightened my mind, in so far as I have interest in and an am enlightened on matters naval." In testimony to their friendship, Frankfurter signs his letter to Morison simply, "Felix." A warm letter reflecting Frankfurter's maritime interests. Condition: sight bump in paper near left edge not affecting text and fine for presentation.

Fine unsigned Tableau Vivant 'Flash Light' Photograph representing 'Tales from the Arabian Nights' by Hughes & Mullins (1876-1936, Grand Duchess, wife of Grand Duke Kyril of Russia) with her cousins BEATRICE (Mary Victoria Feodore, 1857-1944, Princess, Daughter & Companion of Queen Victoria) & her husband Prince Henry Maurice of BATTENBERG (1858-1896, Colonel)]

1887 - showing them dressed in Eastern costume, Henry is seated cross legged and the women are standing behind him, some appear to be tied together and the scene suggests a harem, stamped 'carbon print' on the verso, 10" x 8", no place, (Osborne, Isle of Wight) no date, c. It is interesting that Princess Victoria Melita is included as she always thought of the Queen as rather pampered and interfering and so she tried to spend as little time as possible in any of the Queen's homes. She was to be proved right personally as the Queen arranged a disastrous marriage for her with Ernest, Grand Duke of Hesse which ended in divorce in 1901, when 'Ducky' (her family nickname) ran off to Russia to find her true love with Grand Duke Cyril. The practice of the Household performing tableau vivants over the New Year was revived some time after the death of the Prince Consort. There were normally several scenes, each representing a letter or word, followed by a final scene depicting the entire word. The Tableau often reproduced paintings - a particularly successful one being 'La Rixe' (The Brawl) after the painting by E. Meissonier which had been given to the Prince Consort in 1856. The scene was a quarrel in a tavern which Queen Victoria considered 'a truthful presentation of the picture'. They were not always so well received - a biblical tableau of Naomi and Ruth in 1888 was described by the Queen as 'not quite so successful as it might have been, owing to the ladies getting the giggles and shaking'. The Tableau Vivant photo is an unusual form of photography, which Queen Victoria had a passion for from the 1850s. This is one of the later ones which are more difficult to find as the majority of them have remained in Royal Collections. From the collection of Lady Patricia Ramsay, daughter of the Duke of Connaught.

THE WOODLANDERS (FINE COPY of the First Edition in Three Volumes)

London: Macmillan, 1887. Hardy, Thomas. THE WOODLANDERS. London: Macmillan and Co, 1887. First Edition, first impression, one of only 1,000 copies published on March 15th, 1887. Three volumes, 8vo, original dark green pebbled publisher's cloth (the secondary binding with the leaf of out-of-date ads from volume one excised by the binder). A FINE, fresh, and untouched example with only the most minor of blemishes. A few corners are just lightly bumped, the spine gilt of Vol. 2 is just slightly less bright than the other two volumes, and there is one tiny nick to the spine tip of Vol. 3. The inner hinges are tight and sound; there is virtually none of the usual foxing. Armorial bookplates belonging to a previous owner are affixed to each volume's front paste-down. This is not one of the first 860 sets originally bound in green buckram-grain cloth in March of 1887 but part of a secondary binding-up in similarly colored pebble-grain cloth of the remaining 140 copies in sheets (which most likely occurred sometime before September of 1887 when Macmillan released its follow-up one volume edition of 2,000 copies). The first bound group went primarily to the lending libraries of Mudie and W. H. Smith which accounts for the generally atrocious condition of the few badly marked survivors which are more to be pitied than purchased. Purdy pp. 54-57. Housed in a new, custom slipcase. .         The Brownies: Their Book

New York: The Century Company, 1887. xii+144 pages Illustrated throughout. Quarto (10 3/4" x 8 1/2") bound in original glazed pictorial quarter morocco slipcase. boards in original pictorial jacket with . First edition, first state, with the De Vinne Press seal immediately below the copyright notice. The Brownies is a series of publications by Canadian illustrator and author Palmer Cox, based on names and elements from English traditional mythology and Scottish stories told to Cox by his grandmother. Illustrations with verse aimed at children, The Brownies was published in magazines and books during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Not unlike fairies and goblins, Brownies are imaginary little sprites, who are supposed to delight in harmless pranks and helpful deeds. Never allowing themselves to be seen by mortal eyes, they are male, drawn to represent many professions and nationalities, all mischievous members of the fairy world whose principal attribute is helping with chores while a family sleeps. The Brownie characters became famous in their day, and at the peak of their popularity were a pioneering name brand within merchandising. The first appearances of Brownie characters in a print publication took place in 1879, but not until the February, 1881 issue of Wide Awake magazine were the creatures printed in their final form. The first proper story, The Brownies' Ride, appeared in the February 1883 issue of the children's periodical St. Nicholas Magazine. Published in 1899, The Brownies Abroad is considered the first Brownie comic strip, though it didn't utilize speech balloons until the publication The Brownie Clown of Brownie Town of 1908. From 1903, The Browniesappeared as a newspaper Sunday strip for several years. The first compilation, The Brownies, Their Book, was published in 1887, followed by 16 books in the series until the last in 1918.Condition:Rubbing to board and spine extremities; marginal dampstaining through majority of leaves, ownership inscription. Dust jacket, dampstaining, some wrinkling and creasing, few small chips a better than good copy in scarce like jacket. Quarter morocco slipcase with rubbing to raised spine bands else very good to fine.
