The Bar-Tender's Guide, or How to Mix All Kinds of Plain and Fancy Drinks Containing Clear and Reliable Directions for Mixing All the Beverages Used in the United States, Together with the Most Popular British, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish Recipes; Embracing Punches, Juleps, Cobblers, etc., etc., in Endless Variety.

Danbury: Behrens Publishing Company, 1887 - Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to front cover in black. Binding stained and rubbed, worn at the edges, spine rolled, spotting to edges, some minor spotting and damp staining, but not affecting the text. A good copy of a scarce title. "Entirely New and Enlarged Edition" of Thomas's classic, this Behrens' uncommon provincial Connecticut issue (with cancel title page) of the Fitzgerald Publishing Corporation, New York, reprint. This classic cocktail book, by Jerry Thomas ("the father of American mixology"), was first published in 1862 by Dick & Fitzgerald, New York. It was the first ever comprehensive guide to the mixing of drinks and the making of the cocktail, "the first legitimate American culinary art the first uniquely American cultural product to catch the world's imagination" (Wondrich, Imbibe! a Salute in Stories and Drinks to 'Professor' Jerry Thomas, Pioneer of the American Bar, p. 11). The 1887 edition updates the collection with drinks that gained popularity in the 1880s such as the Martinez (claimed to be a prelude to the Martini) and a variant of the Manhattan. The first printing of the 1887 was by the same Dick & Fitzgerald, and had a Preface leaf and publisher's advertisements. It was around this time that the company became the Fitzgerald Publishing Corporation, and as such the edition was reprinted from the same plates, but without the Dick & Fitzgerald preface and ads. This is the provincial version of that reprint.

Golfing - A Handbook to the Royal and Ancient Game with List of Clubs, Rules, &c. Also Golfing Sketches and Poems

      W. & R. Chambers, Edinburgh 1887 - 1887. First edition. 134pp., [i]. 16 blank pages for a Memoranda of Matches Played, &c., and 4 pages of advertisements. This is a scarce 19th century book on the game and rules of Golf, together with anecdotal sketches and poems about the game. There is a colour frontispiece of Tom Morris, 4 tinted and 1 black and white plate, and other black and white illustrations within the text. As well as containing the Rules of Golf, glossary of terms and list of clubs, the boook includes an account of the Game of Golf by Robert Chambers, secundus; a poem on the Nine Holes of the Links of St Andrews by R. Chambers, senior; an account of 'Caddie Willie' by Douglas M'Ewan, golf-club maker at Bruntdfield; and details of Important Mtches Played in 1886. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling and an illustration of two crossed clubs on the spine and black titling with an illustration of a golfer shouting "Fore!" on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some expected shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. There are some small stains on the rear board and the spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean apart from some staining on the bottom margin of page 17 and a small mark near the top corner of page 16. Minor crease to top corner of pp 37, 38. The last page of the advertisements is browned. One of the blank pages for notes on games at the end of the book has some handwritten notes. The handwritting and ink indicates that it is probalby from shortly after the time of publication and enhances the interest of the book rather than detracting from it.         The Four Sides of the Obelisk. (Cleopatra's Needle.)

Buffalo, NY: American Polytechnic Company, 1887. Limited. very good(+). Color lithograph. Image measures 18" x 11 1/2". Sheet measures 21" x 27 1/4". Plate XXXIV. This color lithograph artfully renders the four sides of the so-called Cleopatra's Needle, famously relocated to New York's Central Park in 1880. Below each side of the obelisk is the square design which adorns the matching part of the pyramid at the obelisk's point. Published only 7 years after the obelisk's relocation, this fascinating print attests to the rapidity of the deterioration which the structure suffered when exposed to New York's climate and pollution. Particularly on the south and west sides, the legibility of the hieroglyphics has been appropriately compromised. This print is from a limited edition of Binion's "Ancient Egypt or Mizraim," Vol. II, published in 1887 and considered a landmark of American chromolithography. This copy of the print is in fantastic condition, with very minor foxing on the right side and minimal edge discoloration. Samuel Augustus Binion (1853-1914) was a Polish author, traveler, and translator. With "Ancient Egypt," he sought to present Egyptian history, art, and architecture in a thorough manner. He intended the size of the work to be sumptuous enough to allow for the faithful depiction of buildings, ornamentation, hieroglyphics, and decorations in their original colors, yet still manageable for use in both private and public libraries.

THE OFFICIAL STATE ATLAS OF KANSAS, COMPILED FROM GOVERNMENT SURVEYS; COUNTY RECORDS AND PERSONAL INVESTIGATIONS.

Philadelphia: L. H. Everts & Co., 1887., 1887. First edition. First edition. Folio. 18" x 15" x 3" Original calf spine and corners and cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover, 339 numbered pages (plus many more unnumbered pages of views), preface, illustrated by hundreds of colored maps and plates in black & white. Twenty-five colored folding maps. A large 30.9 cm. x 70,9 cm. [12 1/4" x 28"] folding map. This is the first large atlas for the state of Kansas. Six Score 83 says "These atlases were designed so that pages could be tipped in. I doubt that any two copies are exactly alike." "This massive compilation contains a vast wealth of information on Kansas at the time of publication. Many of the views depict stock ranches, which are also located on the extremely detailed maps. There are many bird's eye views of towns and sights. Much of the accompanying text is devoted to listing the leading citizens of the state, their property, what kind of livestock they raise, and even what kind of fencing they use. The Everts' atlas is an important source for much information, with illustrations existing nowhere else." Rumsey 2818 says "The views show the remarkable development of the state over two decades after the Civil War." Several pages in the "content" section of pages have small chips (repaired) with minor loss of lettering, also a few minor fore-edge repairs to the margin of a few pages at the rear of the volume, and some light cosmetic restoration to the front and rear leather corners of the covers, the maps and plates are in fine, bright condition, else a very good, tight copy of a beautiful cartographic production. The coloring is bright and this is a tough book to find in even good condition because of its size and weight.

"Till Death, and After" in THE HOUR-GLASS

1887. [a Henty tale's only appearance] An Illustrated Monthly Magazine. London: A.G. Dawson, (November) 1887. Bound with the ten preceeding issues into the publisher's original orange cloth decorated in terra-cotta and lettered in gilt. This is, according to Newbolt, the first and ONLY appearance in print of this short story by Henty -- seven double-column pages leading off the November 1887 issue of the monthly magazine THE HOUR-GLASS. It is the tale of two English men stationed in India, both in love with the same woman.~As is often the case with a periodical's monthly issues bound up into annual (or semi-annual) volumes, this volume has atypical contents; this is because subscribers could arrange the binding-up on their own. With THE HOUR-GLASS, it was intended that nine monthly issues would create a "volume": thus the issues of January through September 1887 are "Vol I, No. 1" through "Vol I, No. 9". This volume, however, contains the next two issues as well -- October ("Vol II, No. 10") and November ("Vol II, No. 11"), with pagination starting over at the beginning of No. 10. Perhaps because these last two months are not supposed to be included, this volume does not have a bound-in title leaf (which would have referred to nine issues only -- as is true of the "Index to Volume I" leaf, which IS bound in). Likewise the binding refers to "Vol. I" and the date 1887.~This volume is in very good-plus, perhaps near-fine condition. The original orange cloth remains bright and relatively free of soil or wear. The inner hinges (endpapers) have deft repair with a strip of near-matching paper. Copies of THE HOUR-GLASS are very scarce; we are not aware that it lasted much longer than this initial year (in which case the November issue would not have had an actual "Volume II" in which to be bound up -- adding to its scarcity). Newbolt 213 (where "Till Death, and After" is properly listed as appearing in Volume II, issue No. 11, November 1887); also see Newbolt (2nd Edition) p. 554, where this short story is listed as appearing in THE HOUR-GLASS and nowhere else.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Brownies: Their Book

The Century Company, New York 1887 - xii+144 pages Illustrated throughout. Quarto (10 3/4" x 8 1/2") bound in original glazed pictorial quarter morocco slipcase. boards in original pictorial jacket with . First edition, first state, with the De Vinne Press seal immediately below the copyright notice. The Brownies is a series of publications by Canadian illustrator and author Palmer Cox, based on names and elements from English traditional mythology and Scottish stories told to Cox by his grandmother. Illustrations with verse aimed at children, The Brownies was published in magazines and books during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Not unlike fairies and goblins, Brownies are imaginary little sprites, who are supposed to delight in harmless pranks and helpful deeds. Never allowing themselves to be seen by mortal eyes, they are male, drawn to represent many professions and nationalities, all mischievous members of the fairy world whose principal attribute is helping with chores while a family sleeps. The Brownie characters became famous in their day, and at the peak of their popularity were a pioneering name brand within merchandising. The first appearances of Brownie characters in a print publication took place in 1879, but not until the February, 1881 issue of Wide Awake magazine were the creatures printed in their final form. The first proper story, The Brownies' Ride, appeared in the February 1883 issue of the children's periodical St. Nicholas Magazine. Published in 1899, The Brownies Abroad is considered the first Brownie comic strip, though it didn't utilize speech balloons until the publication The Brownie Clown of Brownie Town of 1908. From 1903, The Brownies appeared as a newspaper Sunday strip for several years. The first compilation, The Brownies, Their Book, was published in 1887, followed by 16 books in the series until the last in 1918. Condition: Rubbing to board and spine extremities; marginal dampstaining through majority of leaves, ownership inscription. Dust jacket, dampstaining, some wrinkling and creasing, few small chips a better than good copy in scarce like jacket. Quarter morocco slipcase with rubbing to raised spine bands else very good to fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Newmarket. Tattersall's 1887

London: Vanity Fair, 1887. Lib. Color lithograph. Sheet measures 15 x 21.5." This lovely print from the December 6, 1887 issue of Vanity Fair depicts an English paddock scene. A crowd of spectators and buyers surround the enclosure where a horse is being displayed. Tattersall's (now Tattersalls), founded in 1766, has been the main auctioneer of race horses in the United Kingdom and in Ireland. The print is in good condition with minor wear along the original folds and some foxing in the margins. The British Vanity Fair (1868--1914), a compendium and often critique of Victorian culture, is best known today for its lithographed caricatures of contemporary figures and issues. Its portrait series pictured and described--with both praise and caricature--prominent Victorian and Edwardian politicians, lawyers, doctors, and similar professionals. Their images, often accompanied literary and political articles, cultural reviews, serialized fiction, and other standard weekly magazine features. As the publication grew, it turned increasingly toward gossip as a topic.
