Alphonse de Lamartine was a French politician who was instrumental in the foundation of the Second Republic and the continuation of the Tricolour as the flag of France. Receiving fewer than 19,000 votes in the presidential election of 1848, he wisely chose to retire from politics and dedicate himself to literature. Raphaël, based on the poet's real-life love affair with Julie Charles, was criticized as being old-fashioned and sentimental even when first published in 1849. However, it remains an impressive treatment of Lamartine's favorite subjects: religion, love, politics, and nature. French text.

        She. A History of Adventure.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1887. Classic tale of sorcery. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Octavo, pp.317. Illustrated, two colour plates as frontispiece. Publisher's dark blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board, patterned endpapers. First Issue, with the following errors; 'geneleman' for 'genelman' p.59, line 22, 'had' for 'have' p126, line 26, 'it compared' for 'if compared' p.258, line 37 and 'godness me' p.269, line 38. Whatmore fails to note the 'geneleman' misspelling but lists one further misprint 'mysogymist' for 'mysogynist', p.88, line 4. This in itself may be erroneous- we have not encountered such a mistake in all our years of cataloguing this title and at the time of writing no other copy available for sale is described as such. Text block slightly dropped within the case, very light wear to cloth. No inscriptions. Nicely rounded spine; sewing possibly tightened at some stage but if so then expertly done. A near fine copy. Eerie Late-Victorian adventure in which African explorers discover a lost and ancient people ruled by an immortal white queen. Actually printed in December 1886. Previously published as a serial story in the Graphic, October 1886-January 1887, illustrated by E.K. Johnson. The book-form edition features some textual revisions from that version. Whatmore [F4]. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [317]. Listed in Jones & Newman; 100 Best Horror Novels.

Fine Photograph of "Upper Falls of the Yellowstone".

[1887]. 1887 - Fine albumen print, mounted on archival matt (5 x 8 inches; 11 x 14 inches), of the Upper Falls of the Yellowstone River, number 49 pencilled lower left-hand corner. Provenance: from the library of William E. Hofman, his sale Christie's 3rd December, 2010, lot 343 A magnificent view of the Upper Falls in Yellowstone River in Yellowstone National Park by the park's official photographer Frank Jay Haynes. Yellowstone River is a tributary of the Missouri River and its tributaries drain a wide area stretching from the Rocky Mountains near Yellowstone National Park across the mountains and high plains of southern Montana and northern Wyoming. It flows northward through Yellowstone National Park, including Yellowstone Lake before dropping over the Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls at the head of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Yellowstone, was the world's first national park, and "is situated mainly in Wyoming and extends into Montana and Idaho. It was established in 1872 by Congress, primarily because of its geysers, but also because of its remarkable assemblage of wildlife and unusual natural features. The "national park idea" pioneered at Yellowstone eventually spread worldwide. In the United States, Mackinac Island National Park (now a Michigan state park) was established in 1875 and Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks in 1890. (Yosemite had been a California state park since 1864.) Yellowstone remains the "mother park" in the U.S. national park system, which by the 1990s included 376 sites. The celebrated photographer Haynes was first hired as the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad and "given his own travelling studio in a converted rail car, Haynes produced numerous famous images of the railroad's construction projects and of sites along its route. He held that position for nearly three decades. He also was appointed in 1884 as Yellowston's official photographer and sold materials from a store in the park itself. He retired in 1916. His images of Yellowstone are among his more important and dramatic imagery" (see Dorothy Sloan, Western Americana,10/18/2006, lot 254). "Boasting about three-quarters of the world's geysers (of which Old Faithful is the most famous) and over half of the thermal features, it also has one of the globe's most spectacular canyons, one of North America's most celebrated waterfalls, and more than 225 permanent waterfalls higher than fifteen feet. It has the premier wildlife sanctuary (and the top three trout-fishing streams) in the continental United States. Unmatched in the variety and number of its megafauna, the park shelters the world's largest concentration of elk and is one of the last remaining strongholds of the grizzly bear in the coterminous states. It is the only site in the United States (and one of only two in the world) where a wild bison herd has survived continuously since ancient times. At the center of the largest relatively intact ecosystem in the North Temperate Zone, its hundreds of lakes, creeks, mountains, and valleys survive in essentially pristine condition. As in all major parks, Yellowstone's administrators debate the appropriate forms of intervention to protect this delicate ecosystem and strive to balance the competing claims of public access and wilderness preservation" (see Aubrey L. Haines, The Yellowstone Story, 1996; James Pritchard, Preserving Yellowstone's Natural Conditions: Science and the Perception of Nature, 1999).

The Recollections of a Glasgow Detective Officer:

London: Simpkin, Marshall & Co., Edinburgh and Glasgow: John Menzies & Co.,, 1887(?). with special experiences of human nature. Octavo. Original presentation binding of red "shingles"-patterned padded cloth, single line gilt border on sides, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Pencilled ownership inscription of "A. Jardine" on verso of front free endpaper; spine toned, a few marks to covers, scattered light foxing. A very good copy in the attractive - albeit rather vulnerable - presentation binding. Second edition, the title page verso carrying "press notices of first edition". With fine engraved presentation label presenting this copy to "William C. Coghill Esqr". William Calder Coghill (1835-1914), printer and publisher, co-founder of Aird & Coghill Ltd ("letterpress and lithographic printers") was a prominent figure in Glasgow philanthropic circles: he was a founder member of the Scottish Prohibition Society (1856), a director of The Glasgow Northern Highland Benevolent Society, a member of the Royal Philosophical Society of Glasgow and a director of the Victoria Infirmary at its establishment in 1888. Thomas P. McNaught was a detective with the Glasgow police force and his slim book focuses on what we would now call "human interest" stories, concluding with "Barmaids and fascinating fellows"; it is also cited as an early example of the police memoir: "Gradually... men who served as detectives in the police force of in Britain also began to write their memoirs, although few saw print before Sherlock Holmes made his appearance in the latter 1880s" (Emsley & Shpayer-Makov eds., Police Detectives in History, 1750-1950, 2006, p. 109). Remarkably scarce in commerce and institutionally: of this second edition Copac cites only the copy at Glasgow among British and Irish institutional libraries, with copies of the first edition at only three locations (BL, Cambridge, Scotland); OCLC adds only one copy worldwide (Museumsgesellschaft Zurich).

A ONE-AND-A-QUARTER PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by ABIEL ABBOT LOW regarding the naming of the "Franklin Building" in Brooklyn

New York, Jan. 8, 1887. - New York, Jan. 8, 1887. 1887. Very good. - sc - Over 75 words penned on both sides of an 8 inch high by 5 inch wide sheet of A.A. Low's personal 31 Burling Slip buff white stationery with attached blank leaf. In his letter addressed to Mr. Davenport at the Garfield Building (which was also one of the buildings which A.A. Low developed in Brooklyn) Low mentions the possibility of naming the building located at 186 Remsen Street which would house the Franklin Trust Company after that institution: "I have asked Mr. [____?] if it would suit him, or it will not, to have the edifice called 'The Franklin Building'". Signed "Respectfully yours, A.A. Low". Folded for mailing with some minor creases to the left edge. Remnants of paper adhere to the edge of the verso of the blank leaf. Very good. The American entrepreneur, businessman and philanthropist Abiel Abbot Low (1811-1893) made his fortune from the China trade. His company, A.A. Low & Brothers imported teas, porcelain and silks from China and Japan. His firm was originally housed on Fletcher Street in New York City. It moved to new quarters, the A.A. Low building, which he erected on John street in 1849-50. Once established in New York, Low went on to invest in numerous other ventures including the first Atlantic cable and the Nickel Plate Railroad.Among A.A. Low's speculative investments were the Garfield Building as well as financial institutions such as the Dime Savings Bank and the Title Guarantee & Trust Company. Another of his projects, the Franklin Building, is a seven and a half story Romanesque Revival Building. While most were later replaced by taller skyscrapers, The Franklin Building, which was completed in 1887 by the architectural firm of the Parfitt Brothers, survives as one of the oldest buildings in the district.         Columbian Emerald] Chlorostilbon Angustipennis

by the Author, [London 1887 - Hand-coloured lithograph by H.C. Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton. Heightened with gum arabic. Wove paper. Very good condition. A beautiful image, heightened with gold iridescence, from 'A Monograph of the Trochilidae or Family of Humming-Birds', John Gould's 'masterpiece, [which]. must ever remain a feast of beauty and a source of wonder. an incomparable catalogue and compendium of beauty' ('Fine Bird Books'). 'There is no one appreciative of the beauties of nature who will not recall. with delight the time when a live humming-bird first met his gaze. The suddenness of the apparition, even when expected, and its brief duration, are alone enough to fix the fluttering vision on the mind's eye. The beautiful nests of humming-birds. will be found on examination to be very solidly and tenaciously built, though the materials are generally of the slightest - cotton-wool or some vegetable down and spider's webs' (Alfred Newton in ' The Encyclopedia Britannica 1911, vol. 13, p.887). The Hummingbird family includes members that are the smallest birds in the world. The largest measures no more than 8 1/2 inches and the smallest 2 3/8 inches in length. They are confined to the American continent and its islands, but are wide ranging within this limitation, with over 400 different species covering an area from the fuchias of Tierra del Fuego in the south to the althaea bushes of Toronto gardens in the north. The present image is from the work of which Gould himself was most proud. Hummingbirds remained a fascination for him throughout his professional life, as evidenced by his collection of 1500 mounted specimens, which were exhibited in the Royal Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park, London, in 1851 as part of the festivities surrounding the Great Exhibition. The exhibit proved a great success, with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert numbering among the 75,000 visitors. Cf. Anker 177; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p.101; cf. Nissen IVB 380; cf.         Untersuchungen ueber die Ausbreitung der elektrischen Kraft.

      8. Mit 40 Figuren im Text. VI S., 1 Bl., 295 (1) S., HLdr. d. Zt. m. etw. Rückenverg., goldgepr. Rückentitel u. dreiseitig marmor. Schnitt. Erstausgabe. - PMM 377 Borst 3947 Honeyman 1668 Sparrow, Milestones of Science 101 Neufforge 533.
