Autograph Endorsement ("Walt Whitman") on the back of a check payable to "Walt Whitman" for $5.00 from his friend John H. Johnston, Bowery jeweler

New York: The Oriental Bank, 1887. 3 x 8 inches. Bank cancellation cut at center and stamp to verso. 3 x 8 inches. Whitman's signature of endorsement on the back of a check from his New York friend and late-life benefactor, John H. Johnston (1837-1919), about whom Whitman remarked: "Johnston is bright, quick, demonstrative, enthusiastic, unswerving: loyal to the last degree: a money-maker but a generous sample of the breed. I count him as in our inner circle, among the chosen few" (Traubel, With Walt Whitman in Camden, Oct 3, 1888). A jeweler by trade, Johnston provided personal and financial support for Whitman in the later years of his life. "During August 1881, Whitman stayed with the Johnstons at their summer home at Mott Haven on the Harlem River to finish editing his new Leaves of Grass. Whitman apparently felt at home with the Johnstons, whose children referred to him affectionately as 'Uncle Walt.' Johnston was also instrumental in organizing fund raisers for Whitman's benefit. He was the chief organizer of the 1887 benefit for Whitman in conjunction with the Lincoln lecture at Madison Square Theater. In October 1890 Johnston arranged the benefit lecture by Robert G. Ingersoll in Philadelphia, which realized $870" (Walt Whitman: An Encyclopedia).

The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs (Association Copy)

London: Reeves and Turner, 1887. pp vi, 345, [1], 6. An Association copy. Bookplate inside front cover: “From the Library of Laurence W. Hodson, Compton Hall, Near Wolverhampton.”. Tipped in advertising insert: “Large Paper Copy, 50 copies printed.” 4to. Half-bound in vellum. Original half parchment, uncut. Condition: Generally Very Good internally, with Good covers, with some wear to edges and marks to the vellum, and some wear to the paper title label. Head of spine damaged with split and old repair. Light pencil annotations to text. Laurence W. Hodson, (1864-1933) a partner in Midlands brewer Springfield Brewery (Butlers), and this book’s onetime owner, was a patron of William Morris as well as the Kelmscott Press. He inherited Compton Hall from 1890 and was a collector of Pre-Raphaelite paintings. He was an acquaintance of William Morris and commissioned the “Compton” wallpaper, which was the last wallpaper designed by him. Morris and Company redesigned the interior of Compton Hall in 1895-6 and these decorations are largely still there. (“Historic Buildings of Wolverhampton” leaflet No.5 by David Hill) Among the furnishings owned by Hodson was, for instance, a Cabinet on Stand, depicting The Legend of St. George painted by Morris himself, and manufactured by Morris, Marshall and Falkner and Co. 1861-62. (Parry, William Morris Centennial catalogue J.18) Compton Hall also had a partial set of tapestries done on the theme of the Holy Grail. (Parry catalogue M.130). Morris worked with noted Icelandic scholar Eirikr Magnusson beginning in 1868 to learn Old Norse. Thereafter Morris translated a number of these Norse tales, including the Sigurd. “Icelandic culture now became of central importance to Morris as he sought for positive values in a mid-Victorian world in which Laissez-fiare industrialism was eating up the countryside and creating its hideous towns. He visited the country in 1871 and 1873. (Parry, p. 46). It has been noted by Morris experts that his work beginning around 1870 on the narrative poem which was to be come The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs, coincided with the failure of his marriage to Jane Morris, who at the time was infamously living with Morris’s mentor, the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, for whom she modeled. One can imagine the salve this escape into literature gave the sensitive William Morris at this most difficult of times. And indeed, this volume, first published in 1876, represented a significant commercial and artistic success for William Morris as a poet during his pre-Kelmscott Press period. Linda Parry describes this in William Morris, her catalogue accompanying a centennerary exhibition at the V &A in 1996: “ His most celebrated volume of the period was the four-part poem, Sigurd the Volsung …described by George Bernard Shaw as “”The greatest epic since Homer, ”” and a year later he was asked to stand for election as Professor of Poetry at Oxford, which, although he refused, gives some measure of his standing in literary circles.” (p.19). It is perhaps fitting to know that in his last days, while bed-ridden with consumption, Morris’s longtime friend Sir Edward Burne –Jones sketched ideas for an illustrated Kelmscott edition of the Volsung Saga which was, sadly, not to be published until after Morris's death.. Vellum Half-Binding. Very Good-.

        Specimen Days in America

Walter Scott, London 1887 - Second English edition, first issue. Newly revised by the author, with fresh preface and additional note. The Camelot Series. 12mo. [i-v] vi-x [xi-xii] [13] 14-312 [8]pp. (advertisements at the rear). Publisher's flexible full red leather, lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. Front joint professionally repaired with some residual wear at both joints and edges, rear free endpaper is detached and chipped at the edges, only good. An interesting Inscription on the half-title to a fellow Whitman: "To Mr. Whitman of Philadelphia from Walt Whitman, June 1887." We like to speculate the playful poet inscribed the book to himself but there's no real proof. Nevertheless an early and interesting copy. Neither *BAL* or *Myerson* reference this binding. *BAL* specifies three primary bindings including red cloth, but red leather is not among them, and this is clearly a publisher's binding. Combined with the early inscription (the book was published in early June), this might be a previous unrecorded author's copy, or author's presentation issue. The fragile nature of the binding might account for it being unrecorded. *Myerson* A11.2.a1; *BAL* 21428. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Autobiography and Reminiscences Edited by his Daughter.

London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1887 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and block of the Star of India to spine gilt, frame blocked in blind to covers, Forsyth arms gilt to front cover, publisher's device blocked in blind to rear cover, black coated endpapers. Near-contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper verso. Spine toned and gently rolled, slight wear to tips, a couple of faint marks to covers, light foxing to frontispiece; an excellent copy. Engraved portrait frontispiece with facsimile signature and tissue-guard, folding coloured map. First edition. Posthumously published memoir of service in Asia, touching on the Great Game. Forsyth was deputy commissioner at Ambala during the outbreak of the Mutiny and quickly secured a supply of grain and transport for the Delhi Relief Force. He proudly recounts how he was one of the first officers to execute a rebel, and after the relief of Delhi he was appointed as one of the special commissioners to hunt down escaping insurgents, "A job he relished" (ODNB), and for which he was created CB. He undertook a number of missions into central Asia, in 1867 travelling to Ladakh to firm up trade relations, and in 1869 he visited St. Petersburg and obtained an agreement with the Russians on the extent of the Amir of Kabul's territory. A failed mission to Yarkand in 1870 was followed by his misjudged intervention in the rising of the Kukas, a millenarian Sikh sect, in Maler Kotla. On arrival he approved the resident officer's decision to blow nearly fifty Kukas from the cannon's mouth, and compounded this by sentencing the remaining miscreants to more of the same. Demotion to a relative backwater followed. Forsyth's career was salvaged by the incoming viceroy, Lord Northbrook, who in 1872 appointed him plenipotentiary to Yarkand. The second expedition met with great success, establishing excellent commercial relations with the amir and producing a wealth of geographical, botanical and ethnographical information on the region. On his return Forsyth was made KCSI and elected FRGS. In view of Russia's conquest of Khiva earlier in the year, Forsyth's mission was of considerable significance in the playing out of the Great Game. He may have overstated the case somewhat, but the "belief that Russia was the rising power, that she is destined to advance still further, that England is afraid of her, and will do nothing to oppose her progress" (Forsyth's Secret Despatches, quoted in Huttenback "The Great Game in the Pamirs," Modern Asian Studies IX, 1) was rife in the region and clearly needed some corrective.         Early Adventures in Persia, Susiana, and Babylonia including a Residence among the Bakhtiyari and other Wild Tribes before the Discovery of Nineveh.

1887 - London, John Murray, 1887. 8vo. 2 volumes. Publisher's original green cloth, patterned in green within red border to upper covers, similar motif to spines, lettered in gilt; pp. 8, [2], 490, [2, advertisements]; 8, [2], 511; chromolithographic portrait frontispiece of Layard to vol. I, 3 wood-engraved plates, 3 folding engraved maps; light offsetting from endpapers, extremities a little rubbed, but generally a very good good set; provenance: David Lockhart Robertson Lorimer's copy, inscribed by him in 1904, a few annotations in his hand. First edition. Layard published his Early Adventures as a direct response to questions concerning the circumstances surrounding his discovery of Nineveh. Inspired by Henry Rawlinson's RGS article on Ancient Susiana in Persia, Layard travelled there and spent some time among the lawless people of Khuzistan, his account of which in the present work makes entertaining reading. In all Layard remained in the area for 5 years, gathering information which resulted in the successful identification of the site of Nineveh. These two volumes are accounts of Layard's early Middle Eastern journies, some of which undertaken with his friend Edward Mitford. Between 1839 and 1851 'Layard and Mitford travelled through the Ottoman lands, visiting Constantinople (where Layard nearly died of malaria, which recurred in following years) and Jerusalem. He also made a reckless journey alone to see Petra and other ancient sites east of the Dead Sea; he was robbed and nearly killed by tribesmen. They stayed in Mosul and Baghdad; then in August 1840, in Persia, the two parted company, as Layard, who had become enamoured of the simplicity and independence of local life, preferred to stay in the region. He travelled, read widely in local history, learned Arabic and Persian, and spent time in the Bakhtiari Mountains with a tribe which was resisting the oppression of the shah. He returned to Baghdad and Mosul, where he had become fascinated by mounds opposite Mosul which the French consul, Emil Botta, was tentatively exploring. His funds depleted, Layard regained Constantinople in the summer of 1842, expecting to have to return to England. However, he made himself known to Stratford Canning, British ambassador to the Ottoman empire, who admired his spirit and his knowledge of the Turkish-Persian border, which was then in dispute. Layard agreed to stay in Turkey and work for Canning, believing that this was a place of promise for an enterprising and ambitious man. Canning paid him himself, since the Foreign Office under Lord Aberdeen refused to make him a paid attachà . He went on two information-gathering missions in European Turkey. In 1845, fearing that the French would otherwise get the honour, he persuaded Canning to support excavation work on the mounds near Mosul' (ODNB). Provenance: D. L. R. Lockhart (1876â€"1962) was a distiguished Middle East political agent, diplomatist and linguist. 'In 1910, Lorimer served in Bahrain, Kerman, and Amara in lower Iraq between 1911 and 1920; he was created CIE in 1917. After the war the Lorimers returned to India, where David Lorimer spent four years as political agent in Gilgit' (ODNB). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

- Oblong folio. Measuring 13" x 10.5". Red cloth album stamped in black with "Photographs" on front board in gilt. Album contains 38 large albumen prints with 36 of them by Charles-Georges Spitz and the other two by Frank Homes. The boards are lightly worn and have some modest stains, one on the rear board, the cardboard leaves have foxing on the margins, overall sound and very good.         LA PHOTOGRAPHIE DES OBJETS COLORÉS AVEC VALEURS RÉELES.; MANUEL DES PROCÉDÉS ISOCHROMATIQUES ET ORTHOCHROMATIQUES

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1887. First edition. 8vo., ix, 193 pp., 2 plates, containing 2 photoglypties and 1 chromolithograph,15 illustrations in text. Original printed wrappers, which are soiled and chipped at the blank edges, mounted on a heavier stock and then newly bound in red cloth with a morocco spine label. Faint marginal dampstain along the lower edge of the first half of the text, with toning. A near very good copy. "Dr. H. W. Vogel discovered in 1873 that dyes added to photographic materials extended their sensitivity to colours other than blue. In 1882 commercial dry plates were produced, and these isochromatic, or orthochromatic, plates soon came into general use. Because they were much more sensitive to blue than green, they were normally exposed through a yellow filter to balance up the exposure. In 1884 Dr. Vogel discovered a method of sensitising plates to orange as well as green light." Coe, Brian, Color Photography: The First Hundred Years, 1840 - 1940, p. 34. These discoveries were fundamental for correct color photography and three-color photography. "Vogel's invention of color sensitizers. By the addition of dyes to silver bromide collodion he obtained practical three-color separation negatives, the results of which he exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1878." Eder, p. 647.This title is unique to this French edition, based upon earlier texts by Vogel. Translated into French by Henry Gauthier-Villars, and augmented with notes from the author. The three "photoglypties" are commonly known as Woodburytypes.Roosens and Salu 7664.

The Four Sides of the Obelisk. (Cleopatra's Needle.)

Buffalo, NY: American Polytechnic Company, 1887. Limited. very good(+). Color lithograph. Image measures 18" x 11 1/2". Sheet measures 21" x 27 1/4". Plate XXXIV. This color lithograph artfully renders the four sides of the so-called Cleopatra's Needle, famously relocated to New York's Central Park in 1880. Below each side of the obelisk is the square design which adorns the matching part of the pyramid at the obelisk's point. Published only 7 years after the obelisk's relocation, this fascinating print attests to the rapidity of the deterioration which the structure suffered when exposed to New York's climate and pollution. Particularly on the south and west sides, the legibility of the hieroglyphics has been appropriately compromised. This print is from a limited edition of Binion's "Ancient Egypt or Mizraim," Vol. II, published in 1887 and considered a landmark of American chromolithography. This copy of the print is in fantastic condition, with very minor foxing on the right side and minimal edge discoloration. Samuel Augustus Binion (1853-1914) was a Polish author, traveler, and translator. With "Ancient Egypt," he sought to present Egyptian history, art, and architecture in a thorough manner. He intended the size of the work to be sumptuous enough to allow for the faithful depiction of buildings, ornamentation, hieroglyphics, and decorations in their original colors, yet still manageable for use in both private and public libraries.

Knihy dobrých autor? (J. Skaláka a Spol.), V Praze (Prague) - First edition. In publisher's purple, printed wrappers. Some gatherings were bound loose as usual for Czech books of the period. 74, (6) p. Josef ?apek's first book, a collection of short stories. ?apek (Czech cubist painter, writer, and poet; 1887-1945) is credited as the coiner of the word "robot". Although some sources claim that the word "robot" first appeared in the short story "Opilec" (The Drunkard; pp. 30-37.) of this book, but actually it was "automat". "Robot" appeared first in Josef's brother's 1920 play, "R.U.R." (Rossum's Universal Robots), as the name for artificial workers. Karel had difficulties to name these humanoid machines and asked Josef to find something instead of the academically sounding "Labori". Josef coined the word "Robot" deriving it from the Czech "robota", forced labour. [Ref.: Lidové Noviny. Prague, December 24, 1933.]. Bookseller's stamp on half-title. Modestly sunned in a narrow stripe at spine on front cover. Cover artistically restored. Inside clean. Overall in fine condition. In publisher's purple, printed wrappers.         Die Barrikaden" - "Zur Ägyptischen Finsternis". Original Tuschezeichnung unter beigem Schrägschnittpassepartout.

(Im weißen Rand minimale Verfärbungen von einer früheren Montage, sonst gut.) "Klaus Carl Friedrich Richter (geb. 25. Januar 1887 in Berlin gest. 3. (vgl.         Plastic Sketches of J. G. and J. F. Low

Lee and Shepard / Charles T. Dillingham, Boston/ New York 1887 - 1st ed. Oblong small folio ( 12.5 in. ) Illustrated folding portfolio boards with satin lining and cloth ties, 12 pp and 47 loose color photo plates laid in, all in a plain white box with lid, the interior of the box and lid are cushioned with thin cloth, as issued. Very near Fine, there is a gift inscription dated 1931 at top corner of title page. The bottom of the box is solid, the top has a few corner splits and general moderate wear. According to The Book Buyer: A Monthly Review of American and Foreign Literature, December 1886, the plates are photogravures using the Albert - type method. The issue price was $7.50. Extremely rare. The J. G and J. F. Low Company was America's first tile company and manufactured low relief tiles, designed by Arthur Osborne, which they called " Plastic Sketches ". According to The Book Buyer, complete sets of these tiles, even then, were virtually unobtainable and this set of plates were the only reasonable way of seeing all of Osborne's designs. This set of prints is now, itself, virtually unobtainable, owing to their being laid in loose. To find any complete set, especially in such Fine condition, is, needless to say, very difficult. The box, while unmarked, fits the book so perfectly, that it has to have been issued with it. The accompanying 12 pages laid in consists of title page, list of plates and six pages of text by Sylvester Baxter. Please note, this will only be shipped to an address in the lower 48 United States.
