Delattria Henrica [Henry De Lattre Cazique]

[London: by the Author, 1887. A beautiful image, heightened with gold iridescence, from 'A Monograph of the Trochilidae or Family of Humming-Birds', John Gould's 'masterpiece, [which]... must ever remain a feast of beauty and a source of wonder... an incomparable catalogue and compendium of beauty' ('Fine Bird Books'). 'There is no one appreciative of the beauties of nature who will not recall... with delight the time when a live humming-bird first met his gaze. The suddenness of the apparition, even when expected, and its brief duration, are alone enough to fix the fluttering vision on the mind's eye.... The beautiful nests of humming-birds... will be found on examination to be very solidly and tenaciously built, though the materials are generally of the slightest - cotton-wool or some vegetable down and spider's webs' (Alfred Newton in ' The Encyclopedia Britannica 1911, vol. 13, p.887). The Hummingbird family includes members that are the smallest birds in the world. The largest measures no more than 8 1/2 inches and the smallest 2 3/8 inches in length. They are confined to the American continent and its islands, but are wide ranging within this limitation, with over 400 different species covering an area from the fuchias of Tierra del Fuego in the south to the althaea bushes of Toronto gardens in the north. The present image is from the work of which Gould himself was most proud. Hummingbirds remained a fascination for him throughout his professional life, as evidenced by his collection of 1500 mounted specimens, which were exhibited in the Royal Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park, London, in 1851 as part of the festivities surrounding the Great Exhibition. The exhibit proved a great success, with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert numbering among the 75,000 visitors. Cf. Anker 177; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p.101; cf. Nissen IVB 380; cf. Sauer 16 & 29; cf. Wood p. 365; cf. Zimmer p. 258. Hand-coloured lithograph by H.C. Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton. Heightened with gum arabic. Wove paper. Very good condition.

MIND IN NATURE, A POPULAR JOURNAL OF PSYCHICAL MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION

Chicago, Cosmic Publishing Company, 1885- 1887 - 2 volumes containing 24 issues ( all published?)vol. 1, no. 1 through vol. 2 No. 12. 4to., 192pp., & 192pp., green cloth gilt title on spines and front covers, original blue wrapper bound in, indexes in both volumes. From the Prospectus "One of it's chief aims is to gather information on the subject of " Telepathy" and to collate notable cases of mind cure and faith or prayer cure, which latter are to be presented "in a reverant as well as scientific spirit".It will give a full resume of all the investigations and reports of The Society for Psychical Research" ( The Society for Psychical Research was formed in the beginning of 1882, for the purpose of making an organized and systematic attempt to investigate that large group of debatable phenomena designated by such terms as ‘mesmeric,’ ‘psychical,’ and ‘spiritualist.’ From the recorded testimony of many competent witnesses, past and present, including observations recently made by scientific men of eminence in various countries, there appears to be, amidst much illusion and deception, an important body of remarkable phenomena, which are prima facie inexplicable on any generally recognized hypothesis, and which, is incontestably established, would be of the highest possible value. The task of examining such residual phenomena has often been undertaken by individual effort, but never hitherto by a scientific society organized on a sufficiently broad basis. “1. An examination of the nature and extent of any influence which may be exerted by one mind upon another, apart from any generally recognized mode of perception. “2. The study of hypnotism, and the forms of so-called mesmeric trance (with its alleged insensibility to pain), clairvoyance, and other allied phenomena. “3. A critical revision of Reichenbach’s researches with certain organizations called ‘sensitive.) Near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Portrait of Princess Louise, Marchioness of Lorne, Duchess of Argyll.

Ottawa, 1887. Original photograph, cabinet card, albumen print, 16,5 x 10,5 cm. - Topley, 104 Sparks St., Ottawa. - With on the back: Presented to Chief Inspector Denning by her Royal Highnes, 1887. With the signature of Princess Louise. (Inspector Denning. Eleazer Denning was chief inspector of the House of Commons Police from 1867 to 1887, born 1828 - died March, 18, 1911). The Princess Louise, (born Louise Caroline Alberta, also known as Marchioness of Lorne and Duchess of Argyll by marriage; 18 March 1848 - 3 December 1939), was a member of the British Royal Family, the sixth child and fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and her husband, Albert, Prince Consort. Her early life was spent moving among the various royal residences in the company of her family. When her father, the Prince Consort, died on 14 December 1861, the court went into a period of intense mourning, to which Louise was unsympathetic. Louise was an able sculptor and artist, and several of her sculptures remain today. She was also a supporter of the feminist movement, corresponded with Josephine Butler and visited Elizabeth Garrett. She held that "the subject of Domestic Economy lies at the root of the - highest life of every true woman." As an unmarried daughter of Victoria, Louise served as an unofficial secretary to her mother between 1866 and 1871. The question of Louise's marriage was discussed in the late 1860s. Suitors from the royal houses of Prussia and Denmark were suggested, but Victoria wanted new blood in the family, and therefore suggested a high - ranking member of the aristocracy. Despite opposition from members of the royal family, Louise fell in love with John, Marquess of Lorne, the heir to the Duke of Argyll, and Victoria consented to the marriage, which took place on 21 March 1871. Despite a happy beginning, the two drifted apart, possibly because of their childlessness and the Queen's constraints on their activities. In 1878, Lorne was appointed Governor General of Canada. Louise became viceregal consort, but her stay was unhappy as a result of homesickness and dislike of Ottawa. Following Victoria's death on 22 January 1901, she entered the social circle established by her brother, the new King, Edward VII. Louise's marriage survived thanks to long periods of separation, but the couple reconciled in 1911, and she was devastated by her husband's death in 1914. After the end of the First World War in 1918, at the age of 70, she began to retire from public life, undertaking few public duties outside of Kensington Palace, where she died at the age of 91.         Nord Contre Sud

      J. Hetzel, Paris 1887 - Paris: J. Hetzel, 1887. First Edition (not, however, in Cartonnage Type aux Deux Elephants, but in a textured cloth binding instead). 85 engravings by L. Benett. Quarto (11" x 7.5"), red pebbled cloth with gilt spine designs and titling. All Edges Gilt, silk texture endpapers. Some dampstains on both covers, corners bumped a bit, spine shows one nick and trace scuffing, previous owner's markings on ffep. This copy is otherwise in remarkable condition, with bright gilt, strong hinges and a clean textblock with only faint age toning at page edges. With the stained covers, however, just about VG. Covers are plain red with stamped panel border lines only, the first edition apparently being prior to Hetzel's more elaborate cloth "cartonnages", at least for this title. A very scarce Verne true [French] first edition, Nord Contre Sud (North Against South) was written during a time in which Verne departed from science fiction in favor of adventure after the dime-novel spirit of the time. Later known variously in the U.S. as North Against South, Texar's Revenge, Texar the Southerner, and (in two parts) Burbank the Northerner and Texar the Southerner, it was a tale of individual Civil War conflict, but was of scant historical accuracy, and not highly thought of in its English form by U.S. reviewers. Still a scarce and interesting Verne true first, stately and loaded with Louis Benett's famous illustrations. L-29 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
