First Edition! - "A landmark paper from America, the beginning of cosmetic rhinoplasty" McDowell - "Roe invented the intranasal approach for corrective rhinoplasty". - John 0. Roe, M.D., LL.D. (1848-1915) was born at Patchgogue, Long Island in a family descended on both sides from English ancestors who were among the earliest settlers of Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from the University of Michigan and received the degree of M.D. in 1870 from this University. Coming to New York, he matriculated at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, receiving his diploma in the class of 1871. After a year of graduate courses in New York, Roe entered upon the special practice of diseases of ear, nose, and throat in Rochester, New York. He soon recognized the necessity of additional training and to secure this went to Europe where, for a period of two years, he worked in clinics in Vienna, London, and Berlin, notably with Sir Morell Mackenzie. Returning to Rochester, he became laryngologist to the Rochester Hospital. - In 1887, Roe gave this paper on an intranasal approach "without wounding the skin" for the correction of saddle nose deformity. - Garrison & Morton, No.5754.4

Unrest, or the newer Republic .

1887 - 8vo., pp. vii, [1], 311, [1], a very good copy in the original grey cloth blocked in black and lettered in gilt.First edition, and a splendid response to W. H. Mallock's celebrated New Republic by the prolific angling author W. Earl Hodgson. The mode of the novel, a sort of philosophical dialogue à clef, derives directly from The New Republic, although the setting differs, in that angling plays much more prominent a role. Unrest, or the newer Republic is dedicated to Mallock, and one of its interlocutors, Hallock, is clearly Mallock himself. Not in Sadleir or Wolff; Library Company of Philadelphia and Texas only in NUC and Supplement; OCLC adds no further copies.

ONE OF 550 COPIES on Japanese paper, 500 of these for sale. EXQUISITE DARK BLUE MOROCCO, LAVISHLY AND BEAUTIFULLY GILT, BY THOMAS J. COBDEN-SANDERSON (signed "18 C-S 91" on rear turn-in), covers with densely stippled rose border, each board with 16 Tudor roses extending onto central panel, that on front cover with gilt titling, that on rear cover with a field of small leaves, raised bands, spine panels with meandering leafy vine flanked by letters that spell out the title and give the date vertically, turn-ins with frame of gilt leaves, Morris brocade endleaves of rose and light blue silk, edges gilt and delicately gauffered with a leafy vine. In a (lightly rubbed) red morocco pull-off case. Title with woodcut border, additional illustrated title depicting Aucassin and Nicolete. For the binding: Tidcombe 129. AN UNSURPASSABLE COPY, with clean, fresh, bright leaves that open only unwillingly, THE BINDING IN IMMACULATE CONDITION. It is difficult to overstate the beauty and splendid condition of this handsomely designed and extraordinarily significant binding, done by the most important English artisan of modern times. Cobden-Sanderson (1840-1922) did not produce many bindings with his own hands, but he did nothing short of change the entire course of bookbinding in England. Tidcombe's detailed and exhaustive catalogue lists just 167 examples of bindings produced by him, all of them executed between July of 1884 and March of 1893. Through this small corpus of work, Cobden-Sanderson "rejuvenated English binding" with his theories of design "and set it on a new course of development." (Morgan Library Exhibition catalogue) Nixon calls our binder a "pre-eminent figure . . . both as a designer of great originality, who rescued the craft from half a century of purely imitative work, and as a craftsman of outstanding ability." According to Tidcombe, the present item represents "one of the very few occasions upon which Cobden-Sanderson was induced to reproduce a book." The London bookseller Bain had commissioned a binding for Lang's translation of this late 13th century Provençal "chante-fable" (prose and song narrative) full of forbidden love and adventure. That binding, reproduced as Tidcombe 92, was immediately snapped up by an American collector. (Like item #194 in the Otto Shäfer catalogue, a binding done for the 1830 Tennyson "Poems," this earlier "Aucassin" volume is very similar, but has significantly less gilt stippling on the covers than ours.) Working on the present binding drove Cobden-Sanderson to an artistic crisis. His journal for 16 March 1891, notes, "I got very angry this afternoon with 'Aucassin and Nicolete.' The gold broke and pealed [sic] off, and refused to be made to adhere. I threw a lead weight with violence to the ground, and it bounded to the height of four feet! No relief." He goes on to lament his failing eyesight and to question his artistic integrity, asking, "Is doing it well its own exceeding reward, and am I ever on my guard to do it well for the writer's sake, and for the ideal of work's sake, and that world of transfigured industrialism of which I have sometimes thought and spoken?" The British stiff upper lip quickly reasserts itself, as he admonishes, "Pull yourself together again, let not the hope die." One is so likely to be captivated here by the delicacy and refinement of the covers and spine that the lovely brocaded endleaves and elegant treatment of the edges could be easily overlooked, but they must not be.

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1887. 188 x 121 mm. Marbled boards c. 1887. Paper evenly toned, some light foxing in the plate leaves, otherwise very good. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front flyleaf: "A Monsieur Moru, procurer general a , Souvenir bien affectueux, E. Mouchez." First Edition. In 1880, with the appearance of gelatin-silver bromide plates, "whole programs of astronomical photography were launched, with real scientific vigor and on a scale appropriate to the potential of the photographic medium. Heavenly bodies-stars, galaxies-are visible only by virtue of their emission of light, which can be faithfully recorded on a photographic plate, beyond even the capacity of the human eye. . . . From that moment the 'known' universe was no longer defined by limits of human vision, and, since light is only a small part of the totality of electromagnetic radiation, these limits were pushed further and further back as different wavelengths of light were discovered" (Frizel, p. 278). In 1884 Paul and Prosper Henry, astronomers at the Paris Observatory, adopted photography as a means of augmenting their ability to record stars of the third degree, which give off very little light. They had a special lens made for the purpose, which they used in conjunction with equatorial and refracting telescopes, the movements of which exactly compensate for the earth's rotation in order to prevent any blurring or deformation of the star image during the necessarily long exposure times. In 1887 Rear-Admiral Ernest Mouchez, an astronomer and cartographer, launched a plan to compile a photographic map of the sky, enlisting the help of over a dozen observatories using the Henry's photographic telescope. The present work describes this plan; it includes four striking original photographs of the moon, Saturn, Jupiter and the Hercules Cluster. Mouchez, who became director of the Paris Observatory in 1888, expected that a complete photographic star map would be produced by 1891; however, the project still remains incomplete and may never be realized. Frizel, ed., A New History of Photography, pp. 278-79; illustrating one of the plates from this book on p. 273. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Far North Country

Adelaide: Burden & Bonython, 1887. Octavo, 39 pp., the endpapers darkened but an excellent copy in the original brown cloth boards, a few flecks. A rare work by the inland explorer Simpson Newland, the pastoralist and explorer. Newland, better known for his {i Paving the Way: A Romance of the Australian Bush} (1913), here 'describes the Northern Territory from personal experience' (Ferguson). He had arrived in South Australia as a child in 1839, growing up at Encounter Bay. Throughout his life he was a passionate supporter of the Australian Aborigines, and also believed fiercely that South Australia should exercise control over the Northern Territory. This rare memoir is an account of his own visit to the north in 1876, and is rich in details of life in central Australia.

THE HISTORY OF WOMAN SUFFRAGE, VOLUMES I-VI illustrated with steel engravings- 1848-1920

Rochester:: Susan B Anthony,, 1887.. Large 8vo, Bound in publisher's cloth (each volume shows some wear), good. This is an ex-library set (as are most) and each volume shows the effects. Each volume has a bookplate on the front end paper and numeral on the spine. Generally, this is a good set, better than most that we have seen. Complete. This is the official, in-depth, history that reprints letters, speeches, petitions, and all the rest. This is an extraordinary history that shows the organizers' penchant for detail and recognition that a complete history of the movement was not only desirable but essential. There are numerous internal documents, letters to conventions, speeches and the like that were not reprinted elsewhere. An invaluable resource.
