The author, Father Jose Ortega (1700 - 68), was a native of Tlaxcala, and a Jesuit missionary in Narayit province for 30 years; Beristain was the first to describe Fr. Ortega as the definite author of this work: he also wrote a confessional ,a grammar and sermons in the Cora language, as it was among the Coras that he spent most of his life. This book concerns the missionizing of Nayarit, Pimeria Alta, and California. Pimeria Alta was largely the work of Fr. Kino, and included southern Arizona: for this section, Ortega drew heavily, but not exclusively, on Kino's "Favores Celestiales" (which Prof. Bolton translated in 1919 as "Kino's Historical Memoir of Pimeria Alta"). The section on California is taken from Fr. Consag's diary of his trip up the coast as far as the Colorado River, which he entered, and, incidentally, again proved that California was not an island: this diary has also been published. Ortega's work is an important primary source for the Spanish Southwest . Apostolicos Afanes was reprinted in 1883 in Mexico with the title "Historia de Nayarit, Sonora, Sinaloa y ambas Californias ." Scare work according to Palau. [Wagner Spanish Southwest 407-10: Palau 204880; Beristain iv:57.] Contemporary Mexican binding, half leather (red) over marbled boards, raised bands. Very nice copy.       n.d. [?1930s]. measuring 8.5 x 6.25 ins. (approx. 21.5 x 16.0 cms) printed in sepia and mounted in studio's presentation gatefold wallet with original tissue guard intact; in near fine state. SIGNED BY DALTON WITH HIS HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION AND SIGNATURE ACROSS LOWER RIGHT-HAND CORNER OF PORTRAIT AND MOUNT. The portrait was taken in the studio of Andrew Paterson of Inverness. Paterson was a highly successful artist-photographer whose services were sought over several decades by many leading political and commercial figures of the day. The Rt. Hon. Edward Hugh John Neale Dalton, later Baron Dalton (1887-1962), Labour politician and close friend of Winston Churchill, occupied several senior offices of state throughout his long career. During WWII he served as Minister of Economic Warfare and President of the Board of Trade, from 1945-47 as Chancellor of the Exchequer (when he nationalised the Bank of England), and from 1948-50 as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Dalton was born in Wales and educated at Eton, King's College Cambridge, the London School of Economics (LSE) and the University of London. During WWI he served as a lieutenant in France and Italy, compiling 'With British Guns in Italy' as a record of his experiences. Although a staunch Labour party member he was nevertheless a fervent supporter of Churchill during the crisis of 1940 and strongly opposed to any compromise peace as urged by Halifax and other conservatives. In his wartime coalition Churchill appointed Dalton Minister of Economic Warfare. Following Churchill's well-known instruction 'to set Europe ablaze' Dalton founded the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and was subsequently a co-founder of the Political Warfare Executive (PWE). After the surprise Labour victory in 1945 Dalton was seen (alongside Attlee, Bevin, Morrison and Cripps) as one of the 'big five' of the new administration. In 1948 he was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and in 1950 Minister of Town and Country Planning. He retired from government after the general election of 1951 and was created a life peer as Baron Dalton on 1960. Items signed by Dalton are now very rare. His papers and diaries are held at the London School of Economics. A SCARCE AND SPLENDID SIGNED PORTRAIT IDEAL FOR PRESENTATION

Die fröhliche Wissenschaft. La gaya scienza. Edition originale.

E.W. Fritzsch 1887 - Très rare. E. W. Fritzsch. Leipzig. 1887. Very rare. E. W. Fritzsch. Leipzig. 1887. the first version of this book was printed during summer 1882 by Schmeitzner in Chemnitz. Like the previous books of Nietzsche, he knows a resounding commercial failure. Four years after first publication, only 212 copies of this first print run had passed on 1000 prints. The balance, taken over by the new diffuser of Nietzsche, E. W. Fritzsch in Leipzig, made l' object of delivery for sale in 1887, under a new title page where were added the words 'gaya Scienza', a new preface, two more false titles, a fifth book and various add-ins. The epigraph of Emerson, which appears on the title page of the first draw, was replaced by a quatrain of Nietzsche. L' here is proposed copy part of the 788 copy of this first increased edition.       Macmillan,, 1887. 3 vols., 8vo., First Edition, some very light spotting on half-titles, on advertisement leaf and rear free endpaper of first volume, and on final page of text and rear free endpaper of third volume; original dark-green buckram-grain cloth blocked in black with double frame border enclosing an inner frame border with radial corners, gilt backs, chocolate-brown endpapers, uncut, very neatly rebacked to style with original backstrips (lightly chipped at heads and tails) laid down, a very good, bright, clean copy, housed in a custom-made mid-green cloth slip-case, lettered in gilt and with inner ribbon-pull. One of Macmillan's few presentation copies, with neat 'With the Publisher's Compliments' stamp in ink on upper margins of titles. With the advertisement leaf in vol. I as called for. 'The Woodlanders' was published in an edition of 1000 copies on 15 March 1887. Only 860 copies were bound up in this (primary) binding; the remaining copies were bound in the similar, but less detailed, secondary binding and remaindered by the publisher by the end of June of the same year. It was never reprinted in three-volume form. A pencilled note on rear free endpaper indicates that the sympathetic rebacking was effected by George Bayntun of Bath. Written at Max Gate, 'The Woodlanders' was referred to by Hardy as 'his best and his own favourite among his novels'. See Purdy, p.54-57.

London: Chatto and Windus,. 1887. original pictorial blue cloth, front panel stamped in white, spine panel in gold, rear panel publisher's monogram stamped in blind on rear panel, top and fore-edge untrimmed, brown coated endpapers.. Slight spine lean, cloth rubbed at spine ends, corner tips and along. outer joints, a couple of small rubs and spots to cloth, a very good. copy. (#147992). First edition. Collection of thirteen stories, reprinted from various magazines and newspapers. The author closes his brief preface thus: "If anybody reads them and likes them, let me take this opportunity (as an unprejudiced person) of recommending to him my other volume of 'Strange Stories,' which I consider every bit as gruesome as this one." That volume, published in 1884, was the first of four collections Allen published over the next fifteen years, solidifying a reputation as, among other things, an author of weird, criminous, controversial and sensational tales. A fifth volume (TWELVE TALES, (1899) represented his own selection from them. The present collection was his second and is nearly as scarce as the first (STRANGE STORIES). The title story calls on his experience in Jamaica to help create a strong tale of voodoo. "The Third Time" is a dark story about alcoholism. "The Gold Wulfric" is a numismatic mystery. "The Two Carnegies" explores in a tragic mode the uncanny connection between identical twins. "Olga Davidoff's Husband" is set in Siberia and Kent and mixes violence and love. "John Cann's Treasure" concerns a treasure hunt based on a 17th-century manuscript written in cipher; things end badly. "The Search Party's Find" is a criminious horror tale set in the Arctic. Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 19. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. Hubin (1994), p. 11. Wolff, who had a nearly complete collection of Allen's fiction, had neither this title nor a first edition of STRANGE STORIES.

Two Autograph Letter Fragments from Francesca Alexander to John Ruskin

[Florence], [c. 1887-1889]. Very Good. Two very interesting ALs fragments, not dated or located, along with related envelope. References in the letters place the time in the late 1880s. The famous English art critic and artist John Ruskin (1819-1900) met the expatriate American author and illustrator Francesca Alexander (1837-1917) in Florence, Italy in 1882. They became close friends and intimate correspondents until Ruskin's death. In their letters she called him "Fratello" and he called her in turn "Sorella." Her friendship with him enhanced her celebrity as an author and artist. During their friendship Ruskin edited and published three of her manuscripts, including Roadside Songs (1884) and Christ's Folk in the Apennines (1887) that were based on her letters to him about life in Italy. One of the letter fragments was written around Easter time. She writes of the happiness brought by the sunshine and flowers. She then writes of some conversations, not totally pleasant, of some of her guests, although she seems pleased by their positive reactions to her Roadside Songs: " may be pleased, now that the book belongs to you, to have the favourable opinion of such distinguished judges as meet in the 'brilliant society' of my sky-parlour." The other fragment is much more serious. She is concerned about Ruskin's health and a falling out that Ruskin had with Joan Servern, his cousin and caretaker. Among her comments she says: "...You seem dissatisfied with Joanie [Severn]...and I hope I am wrong , but I keep thinking about that miserable time two years ago, when there came about a separation between you, and you suffered more than ever, since I have known you, (as you told me afterwards yourself) and she fell dangerously ill, and as for me...Well, I don't like to think about it. The end of it was, that it half killed you both; and if you knew the terror that comes over me at the thought of any difference between you and her, you would [underlined] have patience with whatever I say!...But do remember that she is worn out now, with her anxiety during your illness, and is probably weak and nervous, and worried all the time for fear of your hurting yourself in some way." Both letter fragments are oblong bifoliums on ruled embossed paper with the gilt embossed name "Francesca." There are eight total pages (four pages each), approximately 500 words each, in Alexander's beautiful handwriting. Each bifolium has a vertical crease where folded, otherwise very good condition. Written on the accompanying envelope is "Easter 1887 perhaps? Francesca's letters to Mr. Ruskin and one from Mrs. Severn [not present]." The envelope's flap is detached. AUTO/073015.
