Harry Houdini's personal signed and annotated copy of the Seybert Commission report on Spiritualism, with thirteen words in his hand

[Glasgow, Scotland], n.d.. 8vo.. "His ownership signature ""Harry Houdini"" in bold pencil on the second front free endpaper of the Preliminary Report of the Commission Appointed by The University of Pennsylvania to Investigate Modern Spiritualism in Accordance with the Request of the Late Henry Seybert (Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1887) 160 pages, 8vo, bound in titled brown cloth boards and spine. Below his ownership signature, Houdini has added in pencil: ""Bot [sic] in Glasgow Scotland"" all of which was added below the ownership of the book's original owner, ""R. M. Kirby 1887."" Numerous passages toward the front of the volume are underlined in blue pencil and as well as several penciled emendations in Houdini's hand. Houdini's engraved bookplate has been affixed to the front pastedown. Boards and spine rubbed with some wrinkles to cloth, pages lightly toned with some minor tears and creases to front and back endpaper, else very good. In addition to his status as a master magician and escape artist, Harry Houdini was also a prolific book collector. Predictably, much of his collecting surrounded his professional endeavors. (His library grew so large that in 1920 Houdini hired Alfred Becks, a former theatrical manager who had spent ten years working with Harvard's renowned theater collection, to organize and index it). One of the most significant components of Houdini's library was his collection dedicated to spiritualism: a subject of great interest to Houdini as he sought to unmask fraudulent spiritualists. Indeed the present work confirmed Houdini's general suspicions about spiritualism, an attitude that placed him in direct conflict with Arthur Conan Doyle, an outspoken proponent of the practice. The present volume was commissioned by Henry Seybert, an ardent believer in spiritualism who, in his will, had bequeathed a large sum of money to the University of Pennsylvania with the proviso that the school commission a scholarly investigation into ""modern spiritualism."" Seybert would have been disappointed to learn the outcome of the study which failed to discover any scientific support for spiritualism. Houdini has underlined several portions of the volume that speak to the fraudulent nature of mediums?"reinforcing his own beliefs. On page six for example, Houdini highlights a lengthy passage concerning the practice of ""Independent Slate Writing,"" in which the investigators attended a séance hosted by S. E. Patterson, who had been recommended by the noted spiritualist Thomas R. Hazard (who was a personal friend of Seybert's). The authors note that when they attended the séance, held at Hazard's home, the medium made an attempt to contact the spirit of Seybert, but after an hour and a half, nothing happened?"much ""to the chagrin of Mr. Hazard, who could not understand 'what the deuce was in it, seeing that the Medium was one of the very best in the world, and on the preceding evening, when he was all alone with her, the messages from the spirit of Henry Seybert came thick and fast.'"" Beneath that passage, Houdini has written: ""See p. 15."" There, we find a conclusion that must have satisfied Houdini: ""Yet, as a rule, Mediums assert that they invite investigation. Our experience has been... that as soon as an investigation, worthy of the name, begins, all manifestations of Spiritualist power cease... Indeed Mr. Hazard once told us that the true spirit in which to approach the study of Spiritualism is 'an entire willingness to be deceived.'"" Very scarce. Following Houdini's death in 1926, the majority of his magic and spiritualism library, containing nearly 4,000 volumes, was bequeathed to the Library of Congress. His collection of theatrical books and playbills were sold to Messmore Kendall. That collection was later donated to the University of Texas. As Houdini's widow Bess was divvying up the collection, several volumes (including a few duplicates) were given to friends and family. Very few volumes from Houdini's' vast library remain in private hands."

        [Coeligene] Coeligena typica

[London: by the Author, 1887. Hand-coloured lithograph by H.C. Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton. Heightened with gum arabic. Wove paper. Very good condition. A beautiful image, heightened with gold iridescence, from 'A Monograph of the Trochilidae or Family of Humming-Birds', John Gould's 'masterpiece, [which]... must ever remain a feast of beauty and a source of wonder... an incomparable catalogue and compendium of beauty' ('Fine Bird Books'). 'There is no one appreciative of the beauties of nature who will not recall... with delight the time when a live humming-bird first met his gaze. The suddenness of the apparition, even when expected, and its brief duration, are alone enough to fix the fluttering vision on the mind's eye.... The beautiful nests of humming-birds... will be found on examination to be very solidly and tenaciously built, though the materials are generally of the slightest - cotton-wool or some vegetable down and spider's webs' (Alfred Newton in ' The Encyclopedia Britannica 1911, vol. 13, p.887). The Hummingbird family includes members that are the smallest birds in the world. The largest measures no more than 8 1/2 inches and the smallest 2 3/8 inches in length. They are confined to the American continent and its islands, but are wide ranging within this limitation, with over 400 different species covering an area from the fuchias of Tierra del Fuego in the south to the althaea bushes of Toronto gardens in the north. The present image is from the work of which Gould himself was most proud. Hummingbirds remained a fascination for him throughout his professional life, as evidenced by his collection of 1500 mounted specimens, which were exhibited in the Royal Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park, London, in 1851 as part of the festivities surrounding the Great Exhibition. The exhibit proved a great success, with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert numbering among the 75,000 visitors. Cf.

DSB III, 205. Norman I, 451.

[Amsterdam and Hellevoetsluis, December 1885]. Small folio (33.5 x 21.5 cm). With 5 numbered lithographed folding plates showing plans of ships, the first a very large lithographed plan of the Japanese cruiser "Naniwa-Kan" built by the firm Armstrong, Mitchell & Co (on 2 sheets, measuring ca. 32 x 135 cm as assembled). Original half black cloth, printed paper sides with the printed letter "F.", word "Geheim" (secret) and "No." with a stamped "8" (apparently meaning this is copy number 8 of a very small press-run).

NCC (1 copy); WorldCat (same copy); not in Cat. NHSM. Second copy located of a report by the two marine engineers Cop and Van Veen, on their trip inspecting various types of cruisers at the marine department of the International Inventions Exhibitions at London, and various shipyards including that of the well-known Newcastle-based firm Armstrong, Mitchell & Co. An introduction to the trip is followed by more information on cruiser ships in general and detailed information on various types of cruiser and individual cruisers, including the Japanese cruisers "Naniwa-Kan" and "Takachiho-Kan" and the torpedo cruisers "Scout" and "Fearless".The trip and its report was made by the marine engineer H. Cop, who was to be appointed professor of naval architecture at the Polytechnic School in Delft in 1887, and the marine engineer Jacobus Simon van Veen (1859-1935), who published several technical works and wrote more polemical articles on naval policy. This copy comes from the "Bureau van den Inspecteur o.d. stoomvaartdienst" (office of the inspector for steamshipping). Text with some minor foxing. Very good copy.

        Army Memories

New York: Koch, Sons, & Co, 1887. Folio. (18 15/16 x 16 3/4 inches). Mounted on guards throughout. 1p. 'Descriptive Index' printed in red and blue on card (verso blank), 12 mounted tinted (2) or chromo-lithographed (10) plates, the first plate with an integral title on a plain card mount, the 11 others with card mounts decorated with tinted lithographic vignettes, all 12 of the mounts with thin small format paper labels laid onto the verso, each label printed in blue with the plate number, title, and sub-title or related text. Expertly bound to style in deep purple half morocco over original dark red cloth-covered boards, the upper cover with a gilt and black centrally-placed semi-relief vignette incorporating the title, red cloth ties, white pattern paper endpapers Very rare: one of the great American chromolithographically illustrated works. Only five copies are recorded by OCLC, none outside the United States. Harlow, who was born in Maine, lived in Boston and was both an etcher and painter. His subjects (unlike the present series) were usually landscapes, and he provided the colour lithographer Louis Prang with a stream of watercolour views of New England that were used in his illustrated works. The present series demonstrate Koch's mastery of both the technical aspects of printing as well as the aesthetic problems presented in the design of the book. The subjects include generic views of army life as well as portraits of specific individuals: Grant at Vicksburg with Generals Sherman, Logan and McPherson; and a second portrait of General Sherman on horseback at the outset of his armies' march to the sea. OCLC 30690206 (5 copies).

[Henry De Lattre Cazique] Delattria Henrica

Cf. Anker 177; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p.101; cf. Nissen IVB 380; cf.         Lady Noel Byron and the Leighs: some authentic records of certain circumstances in the lives of Augusta Leigh, and others of her family, that concerned Anna Isabella, Lady Byron, in the course of forty years after her separation. [Edited by Ralph Gordon Noel Milbanke, Earl of Lovelace.] Strictly Private.

Printed for the descendants of Lord & Lady Byron, by William Clowes & Sons. 1887 - FIRST EDITION. Half title/limitation leaf; occasional neat pencil notes & underlining. Uncut in orig. pale blue boards, drab spine, paper label; spine a little darkened & hinges a little weak. Wise (Byron) pp111-112. 36 copies printed, of which this is number 2. Inscribed on half title, ?John C. Fox, Goring on Thames. Given to me by Mary Countess of Lovelace, 14 September 1922?, and with a further inscription beneath: ?Given to C. Draper by Miss Elsie Fox 1961? This exceedingly scarce piece of Byroniana (Wise describes it as ?hopelessly unobtainable?, noting that ?the larger proportion? of the 36 printed copies were destroyed) belonged, until 1922, to Mary Caroline, Countess of Lovelace. She was married to Ralph Gordon Noel Milbanke, son of William King-Noel, 1st Earl of Lovelace, and Ada Lovelace, Lord Byron?s only legitimate daughter. It was given by the Countess of Lovelace to James C. Fox, the noted Byron scholar, and subsequently passed to his daughter, Elsie, who in turn gave it to C. Draper in 1961. A brief letter, paper-clipped on to the leading f.e.p. advises ?Christie?, i.e. C. Draper, that ?as she [Elsie Fox] gave you the book some years ago it is still yours to do with it as you like best.? Draper had evidently offered to return the book to the Fox family following the death of Elsie, and this note from Mary Theophilus, Elsie?s sister, assures him the book remains his. Milbanke?s work forms an attempt to debunk the myths surrounding his grandmother Lady Byron and her sister-in-law Augusta Leigh, and show that their relationship remained one of mutual trust and cordiality.         Aucassin & Nicolette

London: David Nutt. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1887. Limited Edition. Publisher's plain card wrappers in the publisher's printed french-fold cover, the whole wrapped in the original onion-skin dust-jacket. Limited edition, one of 550 copies issued on Japanese paper. Book is fine, without flaw; french-fold cover a trifle rubbed and vaguely soiled, with toning to the lower edge; the onion-skin jacket with small chips out at the corners and spine head, a triangular chunk out at the spine foot, and generally lightly foxed. Nice; Translated in June 1887 by Andrew Lang, printed November 1887. From the introduction of the famous medieval French chantefable: " There is nothing in artistic poetry quite akin to "Aucassin and Nicolette". By a rare piece of good fortune the one manuscript of the Song-Story has escaped those waves of time, which have wrecked the bark of Menander, and left of Sappho but a few floating fragments. " .
