Lady Noel Byron and the Leighs: some authentic records of certain circumstances in the lives of Augusta Leigh, and others of her family, that concerned Anna Isabella, Lady Byron, in the course of forty years after her separation. [Edited by Ralph Gordon Noel Milbanke, Earl of Lovelace.] Strictly Private.

Printed for the descendants of Lord & Lady Byron, by William Clowes & Sons. 1887 - FIRST EDITION. Half title/limitation leaf; occasional neat pencil notes & underlining. Uncut in orig. pale blue boards, drab spine, paper label; spine a little darkened & hinges a little weak. Wise (Byron) pp111-112. 36 copies printed, of which this is number 2. Inscribed on half title, ?John C. Fox, Goring on Thames. Given to me by Mary Countess of Lovelace, 14 September 1922?, and with a further inscription beneath: ?Given to C. Draper by Miss Elsie Fox 1961? This exceedingly scarce piece of Byroniana (Wise describes it as ?hopelessly unobtainable?, noting that ?the larger proportion? of the 36 printed copies were destroyed) belonged, until 1922, to Mary Caroline, Countess of Lovelace. She was married to Ralph Gordon Noel Milbanke, son of William King-Noel, 1st Earl of Lovelace, and Ada Lovelace, Lord Byron?s only legitimate daughter. It was given by the Countess of Lovelace to James C. Fox, the noted Byron scholar, and subsequently passed to his daughter, Elsie, who in turn gave it to C. Draper in 1961. A brief letter, paper-clipped on to the leading f.e.p. advises ?Christie?, i.e. C. Draper, that ?as she [Elsie Fox] gave you the book some years ago it is still yours to do with it as you like best.? Draper had evidently offered to return the book to the Fox family following the death of Elsie, and this note from Mary Theophilus, Elsie?s sister, assures him the book remains his. Milbanke?s work forms an attempt to debunk the myths surrounding his grandmother Lady Byron and her sister-in-law Augusta Leigh, and show that their relationship remained one of mutual trust and cordiality.         Aucassin & Nicolette

London: David Nutt. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1887. Limited Edition. Publisher's plain card wrappers in the publisher's printed french-fold cover, the whole wrapped in the original onion-skin dust-jacket. Limited edition, one of 550 copies issued on Japanese paper. Book is fine, without flaw; french-fold cover a trifle rubbed and vaguely soiled, with toning to the lower edge; the onion-skin jacket with small chips out at the corners and spine head, a triangular chunk out at the spine foot, and generally lightly foxed. Nice; Translated in June 1887 by Andrew Lang, printed November 1887. From the introduction of the famous medieval French chantefable: " There is nothing in artistic poetry quite akin to "Aucassin and Nicolette". By a rare piece of good fortune the one manuscript of the Song-Story has escaped those waves of time, which have wrecked the bark of Menander, and left of Sappho but a few floating fragments. " .

1887 Silografia originale impressa a colori dell'epoca, all'angolo superiore destro edicole con inscrizioni giapponesi  a indicare editore e titolo di provenienza all'angolo inferiore sinistro firma e sigillo dell'autore.

DSB IX, 552. Poggendorff, IV, 1034.         A Rare 1887 Photographic Card from Miller, D.T. With Town Directory on Verso

J.N. Templeman [1887]. 6 3/4" x 4" Photograph by J.N. Templeman of the town of Miller, Dakota Territory Business Directory: Leading Firms of Miller, Dakota. Louis Carroll Wade's study, small-Town Survival on the Great Plains: Miller, Dakota Territory, in the 1880's shows how the boom from the late 1870's to the mid-1800's led to the Dakota Territory's population nearly tripled. The key to the town of Miller's rise to the ascendancy in Hand County was its being built in close proximity to the Dakota Central Railrway (a branch of the Chicago and Northwestern) as the mIller family came from Iowa in late 1881 and began to invest not only in agriculture but laid out tht town with Broadway being the widest street. They were involved in many of the main businesses in the town (as noted on the directory). Although these businesses are not always named in Wade's work G.H. Carroll's business is noted as Land and Farm Loads (see p. 330) the Vanderbilt Hotel with room for 200 guest (Ibid), the Hand County Bank (see p. 339), J.W. Coquillette (see p. 344), in 1886 J. Linn Roll built an opera house capable of seating 500 people (see p. 339) The fires that were endemic to frontier towns also hit Miller but fortunately only one store was destroyed. Then sunk an artesian well which provided not only ample water for the fire department but also its warmth was welcomed for laundry and bathing. Several of the businesses are unknown in the later Miller directories.

1887 - London: Macmillan and Co., 1887. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth. First Published Edition. This Lewis Carroll book combines the two main thrusts of the author's work: books for children, and books on mathematics. It contains logic puzzles, still popular today, in which various groups are defined, and then inferences must be made or disproved about the groups. One example is, what can be deduced from: "No old Jews are fat millers" plus "All my friends are old millers." As an aid to visualize these concepts, Dodgson provided a game board with spatial areas, and colored counters to place in such areas. Dodgson's text was geared toward making the concepts understandable for small children. However, it is easy to see why the book was an utter failure in that regard: most adults, let alone children, would have difficulty understanding these "games."~The actual first edition of this book was published in (and is dated) 1886; however, Dodgson was extremely dissatisfied with the visual quality of this book, so he quashed the first edition before it was issued (only a few copies of it are known), and had it replaced with this printing in 1887 (so dated). As usual, Dodgson hid the name of the dedicatee in an acrostic: in this case it was Climene Mary Holiday, decipherable from the second letter of each line of verse.~In addition to the book, game-playing accoutrements were also provided (and are present here): (1) a game board on heavy card stock (reproduced as the book's frontispiece), on the reverse of which is the same "title page" as in the book; (2) seven of the nine original "counters," three grey and four pink; and (3) the original envelope. (This copy's game board and envelope are dated 1887, like the book; some copies have a game board and/or envelope dated 1886, since these were re-used from the suppressed edition.)~This copy is in near-fine condition (spine slightly darkened, but scarcely any wear). The game board is near-fine (one tiny corner chipped, a little faint foxing), and the envelope is good-to-very good (flap lacking, one tear, some foxing). Williams Madan & Green 196.       E.W. Fritzsch,, Leipzig 1887 - "Gott ist tot!" (God is dead!)NIETZSCHE, Friedrich. Die Frohliche Wissenschaft ("la gaya scienza"). Neue Ausgabe mit einem Anhange: Lieder des Prinsen Vogelfrei (The Gay Science ). E.W. Fritzsch, Leipzig, 1887. [III] – XII = Vorrede + 1 leaf = Half-title + [5] – 350 + 1 leaf = Berichtigungen; Octavo. First Edition, Second Issue (Definitive). Schaberg 51.$ 1,750The Gay Science, which is the final and culminating volume of Nietzsche’s aphoristic works, contains the first instance of his famous statement, "Gott ist tot!" (God is Dead) – first in section 108, then more elaborately detailed in the Parable of the Madman in section 125, and for a third time in section 343. It also contains the first appearance of the doctrine of the "Eternal Return of the Same" (which plays such a prominent role in Zarathustra) and even includes the Nietzsche’s first mention of the Uebermensch. This Neue Ausgabe consisted of the 788 unsold sheets from the first edition of 1882 with the addition of a new title page, Nietzsche’s new 10-page Vorrede (Preface), 2 new half-title pages and a new 5th book, "Wir Furchtlosen" ("We Fearless Ones"). Thus, 75 new pages along with fourteen pages of poetry appear here for the first time. Nietzsche felt, that the Vorrede to this and the other reissues of 1886/7 were among the best things that he ever wrote.CONDITION: Contemporary ¾ morocco with marbled boards. Handsome marbled paper hardboards in tones of blues, bronze and cream. Generally unbumped spine heads and tails. Fairly sharp corners with a touch of rubbing. Minor rubbing to the spine hubs here and there. Almost no observable scuffing to the boards or leather and on the whole very clean and presentable bindings. Hinges strong.
