Capital: Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production. Translated from the Third German Edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling and Edited by Frederick Engels

London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co., 1887. First English edition. Two volumes. 8vo. xxxii, 364; (ii), 365-816 pp. Original American state binding of dark green cloth, gilt titled to the spines with the name of Sonnenschein's American agent, J. Bordollo of New York, at the feet, the contemporary booksellers' ticket of Koelling, Klappenbach & Kenkel of Chicago to the corners of the front pastedowns and an early pencilled ownership inscription of a Chas. Cook to the front free endpapers. Both volumes neatly recased, a very small puncture to the head of the upper joint of volume I though not causing any stress on the binding, an excellent set. The first volume of Karl Marx's groundbreaking work was published in German in 1867 with a second edition in 1873. The author died before the third edition could be issued with Engels stepping in to bring it to completion in 1883 using Marx's notes for his extensive revisions for the earlier first French edition. Engels compiled and edited Volumes II and III from Marx's papers and these appeared in 1885 and 1894. In this period Engels was also able to oversee this translation of the first part, its first appearance in the English language. The translation was carried out by Moore, well connected in British socialist circles, he translated the Communist Manisfesto a year later under Engels editorship. He was ably assisted by Aveling - the partner of Eleanor Marx, the youngest daughter of the author, who was also enlisted to check the quotations used in the work. Printing and the Mind of Man, 359.

        Papers Literary, Scientific, &c.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1887. Edited by Sidney Colvin and J. A. Ewing. With a Memoir by Robert Louis Stevenson. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark red cloth, gilt lettered spines, brown coated endpapers. Autotype portrait frontispiece of Jenkin from a photograph by John Moffat (with tissue guard), 6 autotype plates of portraits, 54 diagrams in the text (8 folding). Contemporary ownership inscription of "W. H. Vardon" at head of volume I title page; spines sunned, a few marks to covers and spines, abrasion at head of back cover of volume II, bindings a little shaken (but inner joints not split), nevertheless a good set with the publisher's 24pp. catalogue at the end of volume II dated July 1887. First edition of these collected papers of the economist, pioneer of electrical engineering and the telegraph, Fleeming Jenkin (1883-1885), with a memoir by Robert Louis Stevenson, who had been an engineering student under Jenkin at Edinburgh University. The works are divided into six sections reflecting Jenkin's versatility: Literature and Drama, Speculative Science, Political Economy, Scientific and Technical Education, Applied Science, Abstracts of Fleeming Jenkin's Scientific Papers, and concluding with a list of the thirty-five British patents Jenkins filed for during his lifetime. Jenkin also wrote several influential papers on economics, including "The graphic representation of the laws of supply and demand, and their application to labour", "On the principles which regulate the incidence of taxes", and "Trade unions: how far legitimate?", initially published in the North British Review in 1868, which "began his distinguished five-paper contribution to political economy. He advanced modern wage theory and introduced the graphical method into British economic literature. Observing that contemporary economists failed to acknowledge Jenkin's priority, J. A. Schumpeter (in 1954) summarized Jenkin as 'an economist of major importance, whose main papers... form an obvious stepping stone between J. S. Mill and [Alfred] Marshall'" (ODNB).

        BUTTON'S INN

Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1887. C. 1886 by W. H. Busbey, also c. 1887 by E. K. Tourgee. Preface dated 1887. Deep blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. Patterned endpapers. 418 pages. Spine rolled, some minor spotting, slight wear. Pages near fine. This is a most unusual copy, in that the half-title page bears, in faded ink, "Autograph Edition/No. 222." Furthermore, there are nine illustrations, throughout the book, done in ink and brush, illustrating the story, some signed "E. Tourgee." (They are beautifully done, as well, rather in the style of Howard Chandler Christy.) They are painted on the margins, overlapping the type. We have no idea how many copies were done this way, but one wouldn't think too many. Probably at least 222 have the ink inscription on the first blank after the front free endpaper, "Albion W. Tourgee/ Mayville- on-Chautauqua/Sept. 15, 1894," but how many with the beautiful illustrations? The story is set at and near the old Button's Inn which is still in existence, having been moved to a new location, "up the hill" in Westfield, New York.. Inscribed and Signed By Author. Hardcover. Good - Plus/No Jacket. Illus. by Albion Tourgee.

        Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

London: Macmillan and Co, 1887. 1st Edition (People's Edition) . Very Good. 5.25 x 7.25 inches (12.5 x 19 cm). Illustrated green buckram binding, clean covers with slight rubbing. Binding leaning slightly, light foxing to text but otherwise clean throughout.       [Tokyo 1887, Iwamoto]. Original stitched orange wrs., 4 vols. some pages with English subtitles and explanations by Uryu. Masakazu, covers: dusty, some old worming, bit scuffed, the. contents clean, solid & complete, 17.5 x 25.5 cm. R A R E. KYOSAI'S MOST FAMOUS COLOR WOODBLOCK TREATISE ON PAINTING Profusely illustrated in color & Sumi, with examples of the various "schools" of Japanese painting, & well known artists both classic & contemporary. Includes instruction in the art & genealogies of painters, etc. Also an interesting portion illustrating various incidents of Kyosai's life. He was an exceptionally talented & versatile artist of the 19th century. Very nice copy, in floral design Chitsu, please inquire as we may have a different copy in stock. * KAWANABE KYOSAI: The Artist: Liberally quoted or paraphrased from Roberts: A Kano painter, printmaker, illustrator, son of a Samurai. Studied under the great Utagawa Kuniyoshi, then later under Maemura Towa and Kano Tohaku Chinshin, who gave him the name Toiku when he was 19. Lived and worked in the Hongo area of Edo [old Tokyo]. Said to have done some of his best work while under the influence of Sake. Exhibited in Vienna International Exhibition in 1873, and again in Paris in 1883. A distinguished painter, marked by a wild, eccentric humor, left many sketches of great dexterity and draftsmanship, and superb copies of other artist's work not as a form of fake or forgeries, but in tribute to their great talent and style. This book for example is a tribute to a grand number of other artists, their style, and to his own unique style of drawing. A marvelous artists and well collected by world museums, institutions and private collectors. His sense of humor is unmatched, and his ability to express his feelings in drawings was superb ! * This work shows a large variety of his works, Buddhist subjects, icons, Samurai, ordinary people, landscapes, animals, ghosts & goblins, Gods, demons, festivals, artists, Zen priests, fish, birds, animals, cats, dragons, warriors, Buddhist saints, Samurai, ghosts, monkeys, insects, women, men, horses, court officials, Chinese heroes and other folk-lore, Geisha, prostitutes, anatomical drawings, Dharma, and a host of others. * What makes this book highly unusual and unique is not only the large number of drawings, but the accompanying English text and captions telling of the style of different artists that Kyosai emulated. Few if any such resources exist from this time period in English that show the drawing and artistic styles of other Japanese [and a few Chinese] artists. The work is monumental, and shows the true sense of good humor Kyosai had. His light-hearted nature is reflected in his caring exposition of art styles. No other single work by Kyosai is so diverse. * COMPLETE WORK: The complete work consists of 4 volumes: Naihen 2 volumes first series: part a.: 39 sheets; part b: 40 sheets. Gaihen 2 volumes second series 2: part c: 36 sheets; part d: 36 sheets. Each "sheet" is a double-folded page. Nearly all of the pages are illustrated. Some are single images on a page, other pages have 2 or as many as 4 illustrations per page. The entire work was woodcut printed on hand-made Washi paper. * UNIQUE WORK WITH ENGLISH CAPTIONS: Josiah Conder [1852-1920], was a British subject, teacher in Japan taught at the Imperial College of Engineering in Tokyo from 1877 and an architect who designed numerous public buildings in Tokyo. Condor developed a keen interest in Japanese arts, and after a long period of petitioning, was finally accepted to study painting with the artist Kawanabe Kyosai. He was given the name Akihide by his teacher. His studies led to a number of publications, among them 'THE FLOWERS OF JAPAN; THE ART OF FLORAL ARRANGEMENT; THE HISTORY OF JAPANESE COSTUME; and LANDSCAPE GARDENING IN JAPAN. He also wrote a stunning book first western book on Kyosai: PAINTINGS AND STUDIES BY KAWANABE KYOSAI, published in Tokyo, 1911. This work reflected the respect and admiration he felt toward Kyosai's artistic and unique talent. In an another attempt to introduce Kyosai to the Western he wrote the English captions found in KYOSAI GADEN. It is perhaps the first book with substantial English captions published in Japan, giving foreigners excellent access to Japanese and Chinese painting styles done by Kyosai. * NOTE: We try to have original woodblock printed books by Kyosai and the associated references in stock, so please inquire to see which we have in stock today. **** BIBLIOGRAPHY: L.         On the Relative Motion of the Earth and the Luminiferous Aether

1887 - in-8, VII-[1]-524 p. et 9 pl. In London, Edinburgh and Dublin, Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, 5th serie, n° 24, 1887, , in-8, VII-[1]-524 p. et 9 pl, demi-basane moderne, Le travail de Michelson occupe les pages 449 à 463. This negative result held revolutionary implications which led directly through Lorentz and Einstein to the acceptance of new standards of time and space from geometry and cosmometry" (Dibner Heralds of Science 161).         Harry Houdini's personal signed and annotated copy of the Seybert Commission report on Spiritualism, with thirteen words in his hand

[Glasgow, Scotland], n.d.. 8vo.. "His ownership signature ""Harry Houdini"" in bold pencil on the second front free endpaper of the Preliminary Report of the Commission Appointed by The University of Pennsylvania to Investigate Modern Spiritualism in Accordance with the Request of the Late Henry Seybert (Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1887) 160 pages, 8vo, bound in titled brown cloth boards and spine. Below his ownership signature, Houdini has added in pencil: ""Bot [sic] in Glasgow Scotland"" all of which was added below the ownership of the book's original owner, ""R. M. Kirby 1887."" Numerous passages toward the front of the volume are underlined in blue pencil and as well as several penciled emendations in Houdini's hand. Houdini's engraved bookplate has been affixed to the front pastedown. Boards and spine rubbed with some wrinkles to cloth, pages lightly toned with some minor tears and creases to front and back endpaper, else very good. In addition to his status as a master magician and escape artist, Harry Houdini was also a prolific book collector. Predictably, much of his collecting surrounded his professional endeavors. (His library grew so large that in 1920 Houdini hired Alfred Becks, a former theatrical manager who had spent ten years working with Harvard's renowned theater collection, to organize and index it). One of the most significant components of Houdini's library was his collection dedicated to spiritualism: a subject of great interest to Houdini as he sought to unmask fraudulent spiritualists. Indeed the present work confirmed Houdini's general suspicions about spiritualism, an attitude that placed him in direct conflict with Arthur Conan Doyle, an outspoken proponent of the practice. The present volume was commissioned by Henry Seybert, an ardent believer in spiritualism who, in his will, had bequeathed a large sum of money to the University of Pennsylvania with the proviso that the school commission a scholarly investigation into ""modern spiritualism."" Seybert would have been disappointed to learn the outcome of the study which failed to discover any scientific support for spiritualism. Houdini has underlined several portions of the volume that speak to the fraudulent nature of mediums?"reinforcing his own beliefs. On page six for example, Houdini highlights a lengthy passage concerning the practice of ""Independent Slate Writing,"" in which the investigators attended a séance hosted by S. E. Patterson, who had been recommended by the noted spiritualist Thomas R. Hazard (who was a personal friend of Seybert's). The authors note that when they attended the séance, held at Hazard's home, the medium made an attempt to contact the spirit of Seybert, but after an hour and a half, nothing happened?"much ""to the chagrin of Mr. Hazard, who could not understand 'what the deuce was in it, seeing that the Medium was one of the very best in the world, and on the preceding evening, when he was all alone with her, the messages from the spirit of Henry Seybert came thick and fast.'"" Beneath that passage, Houdini has written: ""See p. 15."" There, we find a conclusion that must have satisfied Houdini: ""Yet, as a rule, Mediums assert that they invite investigation. Our experience has been... that as soon as an investigation, worthy of the name, begins, all manifestations of Spiritualist power cease... Indeed Mr. Hazard once told us that the true spirit in which to approach the study of Spiritualism is 'an entire willingness to be deceived.'"" Very scarce. Following Houdini's death in 1926, the majority of his magic and spiritualism library, containing nearly 4,000 volumes, was bequeathed to the Library of Congress. His collection of theatrical books and playbills were sold to Messmore Kendall. That collection was later donated to the University of Texas. As Houdini's widow Bess was divvying up the collection, several volumes (including a few duplicates) were given to friends and family. Very few volumes from Houdini's' vast library remain in private hands."

[London: by the Author, 1887. Hand-coloured lithograph by H.C. Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton. Heightened with gum arabic. Wove paper. Very good condition. A beautiful image, heightened with gold iridescence, from 'A Monograph of the Trochilidae or Family of Humming-Birds', John Gould's 'masterpiece, [which]... must ever remain a feast of beauty and a source of wonder... an incomparable catalogue and compendium of beauty' ('Fine Bird Books'). 'There is no one appreciative of the beauties of nature who will not recall... with delight the time when a live humming-bird first met his gaze. The suddenness of the apparition, even when expected, and its brief duration, are alone enough to fix the fluttering vision on the mind's eye.... The beautiful nests of humming-birds... will be found on examination to be very solidly and tenaciously built, though the materials are generally of the slightest - cotton-wool or some vegetable down and spider's webs' (Alfred Newton in ' The Encyclopedia Britannica 1911, vol. 13, p.887). The Hummingbird family includes members that are the smallest birds in the world. The largest measures no more than 8 1/2 inches and the smallest 2 3/8 inches in length. They are confined to the American continent and its islands, but are wide ranging within this limitation, with over 400 different species covering an area from the fuchias of Tierra del Fuego in the south to the althaea bushes of Toronto gardens in the north. The present image is from the work of which Gould himself was most proud. Hummingbirds remained a fascination for him throughout his professional life, as evidenced by his collection of 1500 mounted specimens, which were exhibited in the Royal Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park, London, in 1851 as part of the festivities surrounding the Great Exhibition. The exhibit proved a great success, with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert numbering among the 75,000 visitors. Cf. Anker 177; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p.101; cf. Nissen IVB 380; cf. Sauer 16 & 29; cf. Wood p. 365; cf. Zimmer p. 258.
