Myerson D138; BAL vol. 3, page 68. 2 vols, 8vo, original blue cloth, gilt lettering, t.e.g. Frontis portrait. A substantial memoir of Emerson that includes previously unpublished selections from his letters, journals and manuscripts. This is one of a few advance copies ("probably no more than 50" - Myerson) with the following printed note from the publisher tipped in both volumes: "This advance copy of Mr. Cabot's Memoir of Mr. Emerson is sent to you in accordance with the author's desire that, as a personal friend of Mr. Emerson, you may have it on the latter's birthday, May 25; but as the work will not be issued till September next, you are respectfully and earnestly requested to regard it as confidential, until its formal publication, and especially to guard against its being reviewed in the press before that time. Houghton, Mifflin & Co." On the front blank of this copy is the following inscription: "James Russell Lowell / from J. E. Cabot / May 25 1887." Lowell made a few annotations in the margins ("But what a different traveller was Montaigne!") and on the front free endpaper is the signature of his descendant Francis Lowell Burnett.

[Nihon Kokon zeika Zukai]. Short Biographies of Eminent Japanese in Ancient and Modern Times, Each with a Characteristic Illustration. Two volumes (all publ.). Tokyo, Kyushun-do, Meiji 20 & 23 (1887 & 1890).

Large 8vo. Lvs 22 + 22, folded in the Japanese manner (fukuro-toji). Text in English and the illustrations have captions in English and Japanese (Kanji). With twenty double page colour woodcut prints. Original Japanese wrappers, printed paper labels on upper covers. First edition. According to the preface the editors originally planned to print ten volumes in this series but us we can understand only these two volumes were published. Another issue (two volumes) with bilingual text was published simultaneously. A collection of twenty biographies of famous people, for example: Iwakura Tomomi (19th century important statesman and ambassador); Murasaki Shikibu (10th century, famous authoress of The story of Genji); Sugawara no Michizane (9th century, learned scholar and statesman, worshipped as the god of literature); Prince Shotuko (died A.D. 620, great statesman and invented the first laws of Japan); Saigo Takamori (19th century samurai of the Satsuma daimo); Minamoto no Yoshiie ( 11th century, governor general of Mutsu); Takenouchi no Sukune (born in the first century, held various officies for more than 244 years) and; Empress Jingu Kogu (regarded as superhuman). Each story accompanied with an interesting and beautiful double page illustration. A lovely copy. Not in Cordier

Picturesque New Guinea. With an historical introduction and supplementary chapters on the manners and customs of the Papuans; accompanied with fifty full-page autotype illustrations.

Longman's, Green, and Company, London 1887 - Octavo, autotype photographic plates; original gilt decorated cloth, recased with new endpapers; slipcase. First edition of this famous work, probably the most outstanding example of expedition photography undertaken in the Southern Hemisphere. This is an unusually good copy of this scarce book, more often seen in poor condition or in later binding, or both. Lindt, an accomplished professional photographer, accompanied the expedition that established Sir Peter Scratchley as the first British administrator of Papua New Guinea. Lindt's photographs are beautifully reproduced in this volume by the autotype process, probably still the most effective process for the mechanical reproduction of photographic images. The text of Lindt's volume includes his detailed account of the expedition and other material on Papua and the native population, including a section by G.S. Fort. From an ethnographic perspective, this book is a lasting visual record of coastal Papuan cultures now irrevocably changed. Longhouses, tree-houses and native sailing craft are all amply illustrated. Joints and spine ends rubbed, but a very good copy preserved in a custom slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Presented to Georgina Martin by Lewis Carroll as a memento of her having taken part in the DreamPlay 'Alice in Wonderland' written by H. Savile Clarke and first produced Christmas, 1886." Following a few amateur stage versions of Alice, Dodgson was convinced that his story had theatrical possibilities and he tried unsuccessfully to engage Arthur Sullivan to write some songs for a musical production in 1877. "Ten years passed, and Charles was still looking for an appropriate way of mounting Alice in the West End. Then, on August 28, 1886, he heard from Henry Savile Clarke, playwright, drama critic, and newspaper editor, requesting permission to make an operetta of the Alice books" (Cohen, p. 435). After agreeing to a few of Dodgson's conditions (including insisting that Clarke not give any publicity to his real name), permission was granted and Alice in Wonderland, "A Musical Dream Play, in Two Acts, for Children and Others," opened on 23 December 1886 at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Dodgson's twelve year-old friend Phoebe Carlo was cast in the lead role of Alice, and the play was both a theatrical and critical success. Georgina Martin (b. 1876) and Edith Martin (b. 1880) were the two youngest children of David Martin (b. 1839), a domestic servant and groom, and his wife, Laura (b. 1842), of 15 Castle Street East, Marylebone, London. Dodgson presented both children with copies of Alice for performing in the Alice in Wonderland play (Diaries, Vol. 8, note 629). [Laid-in:] Christmas Greetings [from a Fairy to a Child].         Capital: Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production. Translated from the Third German Edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling and Edited by Frederick Engels

London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co., 1887. First English edition. Two volumes. 8vo. xxxii, 364; (ii), 365-816 pp. Original American state binding of dark green cloth, gilt titled to the spines with the name of Sonnenschein's American agent, J. Bordollo of New York, at the feet, the contemporary booksellers' ticket of Koelling, Klappenbach & Kenkel of Chicago to the corners of the front pastedowns and an early pencilled ownership inscription of a Chas. Cook to the front free endpapers. Both volumes neatly recased, a very small puncture to the head of the upper joint of volume I though not causing any stress on the binding, an excellent set. The first volume of Karl Marx's groundbreaking work was published in German in 1867 with a second edition in 1873. The author died before the third edition could be issued with Engels stepping in to bring it to completion in 1883 using Marx's notes for his extensive revisions for the earlier first French edition. Engels compiled and edited Volumes II and III from Marx's papers and these appeared in 1885 and 1894. In this period Engels was also able to oversee this translation of the first part, its first appearance in the English language. The translation was carried out by Moore, well connected in British socialist circles, he translated the Communist Manisfesto a year later under Engels editorship. He was ably assisted by Aveling - the partner of Eleanor Marx, the youngest daughter of the author, who was also enlisted to check the quotations used in the work. Printing and the Mind of Man, 359.

        Papers Literary, Scientific, &c.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1887. Edited by Sidney Colvin and J. A. Ewing. With a Memoir by Robert Louis Stevenson. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark red cloth, gilt lettered spines, brown coated endpapers. Autotype portrait frontispiece of Jenkin from a photograph by John Moffat (with tissue guard), 6 autotype plates of portraits, 54 diagrams in the text (8 folding). Contemporary ownership inscription of "W. H. Vardon" at head of volume I title page; spines sunned, a few marks to covers and spines, abrasion at head of back cover of volume II, bindings a little shaken (but inner joints not split), nevertheless a good set with the publisher's 24pp. catalogue at the end of volume II dated July 1887. First edition of these collected papers of the economist, pioneer of electrical engineering and the telegraph, Fleeming Jenkin (1883-1885), with a memoir by Robert Louis Stevenson, who had been an engineering student under Jenkin at Edinburgh University. The works are divided into six sections reflecting Jenkin's versatility: Literature and Drama, Speculative Science, Political Economy, Scientific and Technical Education, Applied Science, Abstracts of Fleeming Jenkin's Scientific Papers, and concluding with a list of the thirty-five British patents Jenkins filed for during his lifetime. Jenkin also wrote several influential papers on economics, including "The graphic representation of the laws of supply and demand, and their application to labour", "On the principles which regulate the incidence of taxes", and "Trade unions: how far legitimate?", initially published in the North British Review in 1868, which "began his distinguished five-paper contribution to political economy. He advanced modern wage theory and introduced the graphical method into British economic literature. Observing that contemporary economists failed to acknowledge Jenkin's priority, J. A. Schumpeter (in 1954) summarized Jenkin as 'an economist of major importance, whose main papers... form an obvious stepping stone between J. S. Mill and [Alfred] Marshall'" (ODNB).
