Photograph ofUSRCs BearandThomas Corwin in the Arctic ice.

[c.1887]. - Albumen print on paper, laid down on board, framed and glazed in black and silver frame engraved with folk-art embellishments. Size of print: 285x220mm Size of frame: 370x315mm. Print slightly faded with sepia hue. N.p. [Arctic Ocean], N.d. An attractively framed photographic print of probably America's best loved polar vessel,The Bear. Here pictured in the Arctic ice, with her companion shipThe Thomas Corwin visible in the background. A Scotland-built dual steam-powered barquentine, The Bearhad an exceptionally long and varied career, spanning 89 years (1874-1963), serving in both polar regions, and under the flags of three nations - USA, UK and Canada. Originally purposed as a sealing vessel, her 6 inch thick hulls made her an invaluably strong contender in the crush of pack ice, and she was purchased by the US government in 1884 to assist with the search for the lost Lady Franklin Bay Expedition, headed by Captain Adolphus Washington Greely.Failures of relief ships meant that this disastrous expedition had attempted to make their own way south from Ellesmere Island, and by the time they were discovered by Captain Schley's rescue fleet of the USSThetis,Alert&Bear, all but six members were dead. They had endured awful hardships including frostbite, starvation and cannibalism. Greely executed one member of the crew for repeatedly stealing food. At the point of TheBear's career at which this photograph was taken, she was serving the United States Revenue Cutter Service (predecessor of the US Coastguard) under the captaincy of the monumentally charismatic Michael ?Hell Roaring Mike? Healy. Captain Healy was born into slavery in Georgia in 1839, the son of an Irish immigrant planter and a mixed-race enslavedmother of African descent. His common-law married parents sent him north for education, and he went on to become the first African American tocommand a US government ship. In USRC Bear, he patrolled the Alaska coastline, policed the illegal traffic of whiskey, saved the lives of many shipwrecked and icebound whalers, arrested seal poachers, and notably introduced reindeer from Siberia to Alaska torelievethe indigenous community's food crisis caused by the over-hunting of the whale and seal populations. He was a notorious drunk, but greatly respected by the indigenouscommunitieshe encountered in the Pacific Northwest and Arctic regions. This photograph can be identified to this period of the ship's career by the presence of her companion vesselUSRC Thomas Corwin, the two masted steam powered top sail schooner in the background of the picture. After Hell Roaring Mike, TheBearprovided relief to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (coincidentally an effort headed by Major General Greely) and was subsequently purchased by Commodore Richard Byrd, who took her to the Antarctic on his second expedition, and then leased her back to the US navy for $1 per year. She starred in the title role in Jack London's 1930 filmThe Sea-Wolf,evacuated US citizens from Antarctica at the outbreak of WWII, then retired to Oakland as a museum. She ultimately sank with dignity in the North Atlantic in 1963, on her way to Philadelphia to become a floating sea-food restaurant.

        Moralités légendaires

Paris: Librairie de la Revue Indépendante, 1887. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Copy #89 of 420 numbered copies of the first edition. Three-quarter leather and marbled boards, with original wrappers bound in. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Light rubbing to edges, tissue guard over frontis portrait detached and laid in. Binding sound, text clean. The New York Times review of a later English edition comments that :"Mallarme defined the author of these 'Moral Tales' as the Voltaire of Symbolism - a demystifier of the cultural bric-a-brac of the bourgeoisie, a dandyish demolition expert specializing in disenchantment. According to Ezra Pound (who translated one of these stories in 1918), Laforgue had delivered the coup de grace to the facile exoticism (and eroticism) of the 19th-century historical novel; in clearing out the residual rubbish of romanticism, he had prepared the way for modernist prose."

Portrait of Princess Louise, Marchioness of Lorne, Duchess of Argyll.

      - Ottawa, 1887. Original photograph, cabinet card, albumen print, 16,5 x 10,5 cm. - Topley, 104 Sparks St., Ottawa. - With on the back: Presented to Chief Inspector Denning by her Royal Highnes, 1887. With the signature of Princess Louise. (Inspector Denning. Eleazer Denning was chief inspector of the House of Commons Police from 1867 to 1887, born 1828 - died March, 18, 1911). The Princess Louise, (born Louise Caroline Alberta, also known as Marchioness of Lorne and Duchess of Argyll by marriage; 18 March 1848 - 3 December 1939), was a member of the British Royal Family, the sixth child and fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and her husband, Albert, Prince Consort. Her early life was spent moving among the various royal residences in the company of her family. When her father, the Prince Consort, died on 14 December 1861, the court went into a period of intense mourning, to which Louise was unsympathetic. Louise was an able sculptor and artist, and several of her sculptures remain today. She was also a supporter of the feminist movement, corresponded with Josephine Butler and visited Elizabeth Garrett. She held that "the subject of Domestic Economy lies at the root of the - highest life of every true woman." As an unmarried daughter of Victoria, Louise served as an unofficial secretary to her mother between 1866 and 1871. The question of Louise's marriage was discussed in the late 1860s. Suitors from the royal houses of Prussia and Denmark were suggested, but Victoria wanted new blood in the family, and therefore suggested a high-ranking member of the aristocracy. Despite opposition from members of the royal family, Louise fell in love with John, Marquess of Lorne, the heir to the Duke of Argyll, and Victoria consented to the marriage, which took place on 21 March 1871. Despite a happy beginning, the two drifted apart, possibly because of their childlessness and the Queen's constraints on their activities. In 1878, Lorne was appointed Governor General of Canada. Louise became viceregal consort, but her stay was unhappy as a result of homesickness and dislike of Ottawa. Following Victoria's death on 22 January 1901, she entered the social circle established by her brother, the new King, Edward VII. Louise's marriage survived thanks to long periods of separation, but the couple reconciled in 1911, and she was devastated by her husband's death in 1914. After the end of the First World War in 1918, at the age of 70, she began to retire from public life, undertaking few public duties outside of Kensington Palace, where she died at the age of 91.         Number 91

John W. Lovell Company, New York 1887 - Red cloth boards are gold, black, and blind-stamped. The title, "Number 91", is stamped in black against a solid gold panel at the center of the front cover. Below the title, "Putnam" is printed diagonally between heavy black lines. The title is also stamped in black against a solid gold panel on the spine. The boards are bright, showing just very light edge wear, rubbing, and soiling. The thread at the lower 1.25 inch of the rear joint is coming loose-the unravelling thread is visible. The spine shows just a slight roll. The hinges are secure. Floral green endpapers. Pages unmarked. A very nice example of a Horatio Alger psuedonym seldom used in published books. "Number 91" was origiinally serialized in Frank Munsey's "Golden Argosy" in 1886. Horatio Alger, Jr., (1832-1899), was so prolific in his output, that two or more of his writings often ran concurrently in "Golden Argosy", and so Alger resorted to using a psuedonym so as not to over-saturate the Alger name. When the Putnam-penned serializations were published as books, the author name invariably reverted to Alger Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Beiträge zur Endoskopie der männlichen Harnblase (pp.177-248, 2 Holzschnitte, 1 farblith. Taf. mit 8 Abb.). + Brenner, A.: Demonstration Leiter .. Dittel .. electroendoskopischen Apparate (pp.89-93, 3 Abb.).

Verh. Dtsch. Ges. Chir., 16. - Berlin, Verlag August Hirschwald, 1887, 8, XXV, (1), 145, (2), 348 pp., zahlr. Holzschnitte u. 5 lith. Taf., PappBd. d.Zt.

The Four Sides of the Obelisk. (Cleopatra's Needle.)

American Polytechnic Company, Buffalo, NY 1887 - Color lithograph. Image measures 18" x 11 1/2". Sheet measures 21" x 27 1/4". Plate XXXIV. This color lithograph artfully renders the four sides of the so-called Cleopatra's Needle, famously relocated to New York's Central Park in 1880. Below each side of the obelisk is the square design which adorns the matching part of the pyramid at the obelisk's point. Published only 7 years after the obelisk's relocation, this fascinating print attests to the rapidity of the deterioration which the structure suffered when exposed to New York's climate and pollution. Particularly on the south and west sides, the legibility of the hieroglyphics has been appropriately compromised. This print is from a limited edition of Binion's "Ancient Egypt or Mizraim," Vol. II, published in 1887 and considered a landmark of American chromolithography. This copy of the print is in fantastic condition, with very minor foxing on the right side and minimal edge discoloration. Samuel Augustus Binion (1853-1914) was a Polish author, traveler, and translator. With "Ancient Egypt," he sought to present Egyptian history, art, and architecture in a thorough manner. He intended the size of the work to be sumptuous enough to allow for the faithful depiction of buildings, ornamentation, hieroglyphics, and decorations in their original colors, yet still manageable for use in both private and public libraries.
