Flaubert, Gustave
London: Vizetelly & Co., 1886. First English language edition. Octavo: [2, publisher's ad], [i-vii], viii-xxii, 383; complete with the frontispiece and four illustrations. Original publisher's blue-green cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine, gilt borders and center gilt cherub motif framing the title; publisher's blind stamp on rear cover. A Very Good copy that has been rebacked, preserving the original end-papers (although inner hinges show work). Otherwise a fairly clean, attractive copy internally (and priced competitively with the other copies in cloth). Flaubert's Emma Bovary rapidly gained notoriety for seduction and suicide following the novel's release and surrounding obscenity lawsuit in 1857. It would take another thirty years before the English edition of Flaubert's masterwork was translated and brought to Britain by Eleanor Marx-Aveling, daughter of Karl Marx, who aimed to give the English "a chance of reading... and seeing for themselves whether there is even the slightest foundation for this charge of immorality" (xii). Today, the novel is considered a masterpiece. "Madame Bovary is first and foremost a major milestone in the development of modern and, eventually, modernist fiction, as it introduced or intensified such developments as authorial 'impersonality', free indirect narration and a willingness to delve thematically into the banality and vulgarity of contemporary life" (Sayeau). Very Good. Very Good.

MICHELET, Jules.
London, T. Nelson & Sons, 1872. 8vo. Original blue gilt-stamped lettered and pictorial cloth with bevelled edges, additional ornamentation in black, all edges gilt; pp. 323, beautifully illustrated with wood-engravings; light rubbing to extremities; however, not faded; internally apart from foxing to half-title and less so to title, due to offsetting from endpapers, a rather good copy; gift inscription dated Christmas, 1871 to front fly-leaf. First edition in English. Jules Michelet was not only the most eminent Fench historian of the 19th century and liberal political thinker, pantheist and republican, but wrote as well on natural history. At the end of the preface he empahtically exclaims 'Living spirit of regeneration! True heart-cordial in these days of too general decadence! May this book, while strengthening ourselves, steadies others upon the slopes, where, through weakness or melancholy, so many fall! If it need as epigraph, it shall be this word - Ascend!' This work contains chapters on the Alps, Mont Blanc, Himalayas and the Pyrenees amongst others, and some more broad sections on the nature of mountains in general. Michelet compares Alpine with Polar climate, describes the aurora borealis, volcanoes of Java, observations of the Engadine and the Grisons.

Maudsley, Henry -
London 24.IX.1886. 4 Seiten 8. Mit blau gedrucktem Briefkopf. Henry Maudsley (1835-1918), englischer Psychiater, seinerzeit der bedeutendste Vertreter seines Faches in Großbritannien. - An den englischen Neurologen und Naturforscher Henry Charlton Bastian (1837-1915), dem er für die Übersendung "of your learned treatise" (vermutlich "Paralyses, Cerebral, Bulbar and Spinal") dankt. "... How glad I am that I am not immortal! That is what it has made me feel, since it has shown me how many things I should have to go on to learn, were I gifted with that fatal curse . Why such a villainous type, odious to the eyes of gods and men? You might, by a malignant metempsychosis, have been transmigrated into a Yankee - the most offensive animal in creation - to have selected such a type. Of course I have not yet read the book - have only looked into it here and there - but I have seen enough to beget a hope that it will clarify the confusion in which I at present am with regard to 'centres' and 'centres', motor and other-kinded in the convolutions. High metaphysical creations I should be apt to call such 'centres' ."

TUCKER, Albert (1914-1999); INOKUMA, Genichiro 1902-1993
Five postcards, including three real photo and two colour printed, average size 140 x 90 mm, of paintings by the Japanese artist Genichiro Inokuma, each with an inscription in pencil verso naming both the subject and the artist; [together with] four postcards of paintings by the Japanese artist Tsuguharu Foujita (1886-1968), 140 x 90 mm, each inscribed by Australian artist Albert Tucker in pen, 'Foujita'; the nine postcards are in overall good condition (one a little creased) and are accompanied by their original plain envelope (mild foxing, edge tears). Provenance: Estate of Albert Tucker. These postcards were acquired by Albert Tucker on a visit to Japan in 1947, during which the Australian war artist met one his counterparts, Genichiro Inokuma, a Japanese war artist. 'Artists have traditionally exchanged works of art, including portraits, with each other, both as a mark of respect for each other's work and as tokens of their friendship. In 1947 Albert Tucker travelled to Japan as a war correspondent accredited to the British Commonwealth Occupation Force where he met several former Japanese war artists. Tucker made portraits of these artists, and in the case of Inokuma Genichiro made two similar drawings, one to present, and one to keep for himself. At least one of these artists, Sanda Yasushi, made a portrait of Tucker as a gift. This friendship exchange of portraits is particularly significant as it was made only two years after the end of the war, after the atom bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the revelations in Australia of the Japanese treatment of Allied p … [Click Below for Full Description]
