SHERBURNE M. GRAHAM
KEYPORT WHALE CREEK NEW JERSEY NJ: (1886). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a very interesting and intriguing 1886 manuscript diary dated July 11th 1886 through to December 25th 1886, handwritten by a young woman named Sherburne M. Graham of, we believe New Jersey. Her passing references to Whale Creek, Keyport, the boat Wm. E. Bishop, assuredly pinpoint New Jersey as her locale. Historians and collectors of the place and times will find this diary unique inasmuch that Miss Graham brings a soap opera quality to her writings describing the politics, back stabbing, inter personal relations and gossip that occurs at work in a retail store. Upon her return from a vacation she writes that she is worried that while away from the store 'some serious mistake discovered during my absence and for which I would get a laying out.' She then admits to poor work ethic prior to her vacation as she was disconsolate she was refused a raise. The back drop of her family: a preacher father and an ill mother and her other close personal relationships add to the narrative. In one example her father calls in an allopathic doctor for her mother. After some time the Doctor performs an "operation" on her mother who had a side abscess. The doctor had been treating her to no avail and after several days, gave her some ether and lanced her side (after the gruesome description, he said he thought he had accidentally cut the intestines). The largish flip style diary has approximately 160 pages measuring about 8-1/4" x 4-1/2". Overall G+.. Book Condition: Good+

JAMES, Henry.
London Macmillan and Co. 3 vol., first edition, 8vo, advertisements at end of vol. II & III, mild marginal toning, but overall internally very good, patterned endpapers, small, historic professional repair to upper hinge of vol. I, original dark blue-green cloth, blocked in black and lettered in gilt to spines, neat old repairs to head and feet of spines, overall an unusually clean and attractive set, presented in cloth chemise and matching solander box. A superior set of one of James' most famous but controversial novels. The Bostonians was from its initial publication in serial form a divisive work, with many reviewers of the time feeling it was uncharitable in its depiction of the liberal and intellectual ambitions of the Bostonians it seemed to send up. Other reviewers felt the work was overly political in its treatment of its subject matter, including the emerging social reform movements of the time, notably feminism, which James himself was, it seems, somewhat ambivalent about. That Olive's apparent attraction to Verena could potentially indicate a lesbian aspect has been the subject of more recent speculation and adds another dimension both to the work and the motives and behaviour of the main characters (The Bostonians refers primarily to these two characters Olive and Verena, "as they appeared to the mind of Ransom, the southerner and outsider, looking at them from New York" [James, Henry James: Letters. Volume III: 1883–1895, 1980]). Edel & Laurence states that the first printing comprised 500 copies, published 16 February 1886, with a second, undifferentiated imp … [Click Below for Full Description]

COMPUTER. -
1 half-page miniature, 3 full-page miniatures, large historiated initials, numerous other smaller figurated and ornamental initials with imitation penwork scrolling, each page within variegated foliated and figurated borders. Woven entirely in pale gray, silver, and black silk. [50] pp. Small 4to (175 x 145 mm). Contemporary dark red jansenist morocco with inner gold-ruled doublures and silk endpapers (by Kauffmann-Petit), blind- stamped title on spine. In a matching dark red cloth slipcase. Lyon, R.P.J. Hervier, dessinateur; A. Henry, fabricant for A. Roux, 1886-87. This is the first example of a computer-generated book produced with the ancestor of the modern computer, the only successfully woven book appeared in an edition of fifty to sixty copies and is very rare. A phenomenal vanity-piece of the Industrial Age, this technological tour-de-force was woven entirely in silk using the punch-card system of Jacquard looms (after Joseph M. Jacquard, 1752-1834), a process which was in essence a precursor of the computer programming. At the time of its invention, in 1804, the Jacquard loom was the most complex programmable machine in existence, with its incredible potential of the "Operations / Variables" punched card system, with its binary data and modern "Input / Output / Storage" capabilities. 'Programmed' perforations in the punch-cards controlled the minute movements of the hooks pulling the silk threads. The Jacquard loom is considered as one of the precursors of the computer. The principles put to use in this process had already been applied by Charles Babbage in his exp … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARY KIBLING
WEST LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE: (1886). 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. On offer is a fascinating diary authored by a 20-year old Mary D. Kibling, a student of the Tilden Female Seminary from a noted local family. The diary contains over 100 pages with an entry for every day of the year, with additional information for some of the days at the end in the memoranda section. It also includes an address book and lists of her expenses and Christmas gifts. The diary measures 6'2x4', the leather flap cover is slightly worn but otherwise it is in a very good condition. The handwriting is mostly legible, though slightly faded at some places. Mary was born in 1866, she belonged to a noted family of New England farmers and businessmen - her grandfather, Lorenzo D. Kibling, was a merino sheep farmer, and her father, Asahel, - a wool merchant. At the time when she was writing her diary Mary studied at the Tilden Ladies Seminary, founded in 1854 and serving students living in West Lebanon. Named after its largest contributor William Tilden, it had among its founders professor Allen H. Weld and Charles Brickett Haddock, then well-known educators and authors, Haddock was also a politician. Though most of the entries are brief, as a whole they create an excellent picture of what was middle class young women's life like at the end of the 19th century. Mary Kibling spends time writes with her family and friends, shopping, dancing, taking small trips. Many entries mention painting and practising music. Here are some of the typical entries: "Went to Seminary. German ok. Practiced. Got ready about five … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pedersen, Hugo Vilfred (1870 - Kopenhagen - 1959)
Signiert "Hugo V P" 41 x 54,5 cm. Vilfred-Pedersen studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen between 1886-1892, and later studied under Henningsen at the School of Modeling. Vilfred-Pedersen painted portraits, landscapes, figures and interiors in oils and watercolors. Vilfred-Pedersen was a world traveler, having journeyed around the globe seven times. He spent many years in Asia – visiting China, India, Indonesia, Sumatra, and Japan, where he painted landscapes and people – including the Viceroy, Lord Curzon. SHAW, G. Bernard
[London]: The Modern Press, 1886. Tall 8vo, pp. 164. Bound in pebbled binder's cloth (lacking the original wraps). George Bernard Shaw's first novel, preceded only by two Fabian Society writings. Laurence A3. Originally printed in the April 1885-March 1886 issues of "To-Day", this first edition was printed from the corrected and revised stereos of the original setting for the journal. This is the larger, variant issue, with the preliminary blank leaf bound at the beginning. Shaw explains the variant this way: "The size of the bigger copies is due to the fact that they reproduced not only the type but the format of To-day. But the booksellers objected that in this form it occupied too much room to be displayed on their stalls and counters. It was probably cut down as far as the margins would allow to meet this objection" (Laurence). This is a fascinating copy owned by two distinguished historians: Sir George Otto Trevelyan (nephew of Lord Macaulay) and his son George Macaulay Trevelyan in 1928 at Otto's death. George Trevelyan notes that the markings in th text are by his father. At the end is a note in Sir George Trevelyan's hand: "A Wonderful book Xmas 1914" and there are further notes dated 1946, 1950 (of Christmas readings) and July 1955 by George Trevelyan. In his life of his father, George Trevelyan writes on page 132: "he delighted in a London Irish author who was bringing out obscure novels in the eighties entitled Cashel Byron's Profession and the Unsocial Socialist. Leo Tolstoy
Thomas Y. Crowell, 1886. Hardcover. 1886, Illustrated Edition, 1st P. This is a first edition, 1st printing of the 1886 Illustrated Edition.*-Anna Karenina (Russian: «Анна Каренина», IPA: [ˈanːə kɐˈrʲenʲɪnə]) is a novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, published in serial installments from 1873 to 1877 in the periodical The Russian Messenger. Tolstoy clashed with editor Mikhail Katkov over political issues that arose in the final installment (Tolstoy's negative views of Russian volunteers going to fight in Serbia); therefore, the novel's first complete appearance was in book form in 1878.-Widely regarded as a pinnacle in realist fiction, Tolstoy considered Anna Karenina his first true novel, after he came to consider War and Peace to be more than a novel. Fyodor Dostoyevsky declared it "flawless as a work of art." His opinion was shared by Vladimir Nabokov, who especially admired "the flawless magic of Tolstoy's style," and by William Faulkner, who described the novel as "the best ever written." The novel remains popular, as demonstrated by a 2007 Time poll of 125 contemporary authors in which Anna Karenina was voted the "greatest book ever written." --- Wikipedia -*NOTE: Thomas Y. Crowell --- No statement on first editions, but subsequent printings noted. May have used a number row to indicate printings as early as the 1940s.

CARROLL, Lewis.
Macmillan & Co. 1886. 8vo. Original red cloth, gilt lettering to front and spine, in custom-made half-red morocco clamshell box; pp. [xii] + 96 + [1] + [2, ads.], with original game board and all nine counters (4 red, 5 grey) in envelope (flap split but present); fragile, recently recased with front free endpaper detached but preserved, very clean, very good. Provenance: envelope with signature of D.M. Birkett, mathematics professor at Christchurch, Oxford. Half-title with inscription of J.P. Gram, dated April 11 1914. Jorgen Pedersen Gram (1850-1916) was a prominent Danish mathematician. He was an actuary by profession and never held a post at a university yet, despite his amateur status, he was highly influential, receiving the Danish Acedemy's Gold Medal in 1884 before he had even joined it. He originated the Gram-Schmidt process, Gram's theorem and the Gramian matrix in linear algebra. In number theory, his Gram Point is important for the Riemann zeta function, and he was the first mathematician to provide a systematic theory of the development of skew frequency curves. This great man met his death a rather bathetic way: en route to a meeting at the Danish Academy he was knocked down and killed by a cyclist. First edition, one of only fifty copies. Far fewer remain, as it is notoriously fragile and the counters are easily lost. The game is an ingenious blend of mathematical syllogism and nonsensical word games, perfectly displaying Carroll's two main intellectual interests. "A mystery edition, which is rarer than would be expected. Printed by E. Baxter at Oxford, and t … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAINT SAENS (Camille).
[Click Below for Full Description]

Halls & A. Rydstrom, Civil Engineers. Illustrated plates; in text illustrations. Dark green cloth with gilt lettering to front cover & spine; decorative endpapers. Minor wear to extremities else a fine, bright copy; the nicest copy we've seen. Map is in fine condition (tiny splits at corners of folds). "An account of a trip on horseback by the author, his wife and daughter, for the benefit of the health of the latter." - Bradford 5941. This work contains chapters on the railroad journey to Yellowstone, camp life, Mammoth Hot Springs, Green River & Obsidian Cliffs, the Morris Basin, Gibbon Canon and Falls, the Great Geysers, the Great Canon, etc., as well as chapters on the "former inhabitants of the park." There is in addition a long chapter on the game found at Yellowstone (buffalo, elk, bears, deer, wolves, beavers, etc.). Some of the illustrations are signed W. M. Cary or W.M.C., perhaps William de la Montagne Cary (1840-1922). Hamilton (Early American Book Illustrators, I, p. 88) comments on Cary: " Cary went West in 1861 and was one of the first to paint western scenes and incidents of Indian life directly from what he himself had observed. While best known for his paintings, his wood engravings, most of which appeared in Harper's Weekly and The Aldine, are of real value in their depiction of frontier and Indian life. … [Click Below for Full Description]

STEVENSON, Robert Louis (1850-1894).
London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1886. FIRST EDITION. Octavo (18 x 12cm), pp.[8]; 141; [1], blank. Bound by W. H. Smith in contemporary orange cloth with gilt titles to the spine, white endpapers. Contents a little toned, a couple of leaves frayed to fore-edge, first and final pages browned, binding with a few marks, Smith's blindstamp to last leaf. A very good copy, housed in an attractive leather-spined clamshell box. The classic mystery crime novel/ horror story (or 'Crawler' as Stevenson called it), inspired by the case of the Edinburgh body snatchers Burke and Hare, was written in just three days, although it was shelved by the author for three years as he considered it too disturbing for publication. "Jekyll and Hyde" is a chilling masterpiece work; a brilliantly suggestive, resonant study of human duality by a natural storyteller.

MARY ANN PROSSER
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND: (1886). 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is a couple (2) of elegantly written highly detailed cookbooks of Mary Ann Prosser nee Taylor (1862?-1915), a wife of Sir John Prosser, Writer to the Signet, and grandmother of William David Prosser, Lord Prosser, a prominent lawyer and advocate for the arts in Edinburgh. One of the books has 43 pages filled, the other 88 pages. There is a handwritten date, July 1886, in one of the books, which was two months before her wedding, and the address of their family home in Edinburgh: 4 Bellevue Crescent. The books contain many recipes typical for Scottish and English cuisine of that time, and of French dishes. Unlike many cookbooks that presume previous cooking experience, this one contains minute nuances about cooking times, quantity of ingredients, kitchen utensils to use, giving an insight into lifestyle and diet of a well-off Edinburgh family in 1880s. The first book starts with the basic recipes how to boil vegetables, fry herring and haddock: "Little fresh haddock: Skin them, sprinkle with salt, dip in flour, paint-over with egg, dip in bread crumbs, pop into boiling fat for 3 minutes", and also includes more complicated dishes, like a turtle soup, which took 3 days to prepare. It describes a wide variety of seafood dishes, like Finnan haddock and lobster pates, and extensive use of entrails typical for Scottish cuisine: "Sheep kidney for frying, ox kidney for stewing...", recipes of savory and sweet omelets, many sauces: apple brandy, mint, sherry, Soubise, Hollandaise, sauce for plum pudding, variety of … [Click Below for Full Description]
