Mini Archive - French Explorer's Expeditions to South America to Unsurveyed Interior Regions - Manuscripts, Autograph Album & Artifacts - Cranial Measuring Tool for Examinations of Indigenous People

South America, 1886. South America, 1886-1905. Archive of French explorer Joseph de Brettes who made four expeditions to South America including two to the not yet surveyed interior regions of Gran Chaco, consisting of a steel cranial measuring device used during his ethnographic examinations of the Arhuaco-Kagaba Indians (Kogi people) found in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, northern Colombia, a steel archaeological specimen, two offprint accounts written and illustrated by De Brettes describing his expeditions and scientific work in South America, and an offprint bibliographical outline of De Brettes' extensive explorations in South America and elsewhere as well as his naval and army service. All text is in French. Some age-toning and wear to documents, otherwise the lot in very good condition, a unique nineteenth century explorer's archive of documents, artefacts, and signatures. Together with personalia, including an album of autographs largely collected whilst in South America, 3 photographic identification cards, his personal library bookplate, a manuscript caricature drawing, a manuscript note to which is affixed a photograph of his family's gravesite, and an offprint poem signed and dedicated by French poet Jehan Rictus in which is inserted a separate autographed note by Rictus both addressed to De Brettes. Together with correspondence connected with his efforts as Vice-President of a Portuguese railway company, in particular dealing with a meeting with the King, including 3 manuscript telegrams sent from Lisbon September 1905, and 2 manuscript letters dated 1905. Joseph de Brettes (1861-1934) made two geographical explorations to Chaco in South America, first in 1886, and again in 1888. From 1892 to 1893 he was exploring Colombia and making sociological and ethnographical observations of the Arhuaco and the Kogi people in the Sierra Nevada region. After a sojourn in France, he returned for further reconnaissance work in Colombia from 1895 to 1898. A skilful explorer, surveyor, and author of several notable works on the subject, a most ambitious businessman and delegate, recipient of several awards, all-but-forgotten today, the Bliothèque Nationale de France holds a collection of photographs, manuscripts and published works from De Brettes' illustrious career. From De Brettes' explorations and ethnographic studies in South America, the archive includes the following: A seldom seen nineteenth century cranial measuring device, being a simple clamp-styled metal apparatus in original and still functional conditional, measuring 28 cm tall when closed, and 33 cm wide when fully extended. This type of craniometry tool was used in the field of physical anthropology during the 19th century, and the first part of the 20th century. De Brettes' would have used this during his ethnographic examinations of the Arhuaco-Kagaba Indians (Kogi people) of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, northern Colombia. [Craniometry is the measurement of the cranium, usually the human skull. It is a subset of cephalometry, measurement of the head, which falls under the science of anthropometry which is the measurement of the human individual.] De Brettes' own working copy of his title, "Mission géographique dans le Chaco (Amérique du Sud)" published in 1889 immediately upon return from his expedition, and being a riveting account of travel through the Formosa province of Argentina and the Gran Chaco plains, partly along the Pilcomayo River, including hostile encounters with so-called "savage Indian tribes," and other perils. Small 8vo. 44 pages, titled wrappers. Replete with the author's annotations for a revised edition. Wrappers chipped, else very good condition. Rare Offprint from the proceeding of the Anthropological Society of Paris, 1903. Title: "Les Indiens Arhouaques-Kaggabas. Réponses au questionnaire de sociologie et d'ethnographie de la Société d'anthropologie" by Joseph de Brettes. 8vo. 36 pages with in-text illustrations, titled wrappers. Chips to extremities, age-toning, else very good condition. An ornate archaeological specimen made of heavy steel and measuring approximately 8,5 x 3 x 1 cm. A detailed offprint bibliographical sketch of De Brettes' extensive explorations in Argentina and Colombia (1895), Tunisia, and elsewhere, as well as his naval and army service, also recording important meetings with monarchs and delegates, military assignments, and much more. Pertaining to De Brette's work in Portugal developing railroads, we find the following correspondence: Signed manuscript letter, Lisbon, 27 April 1905, from Albert Girard, whose office was at the king's court in the Palace of Necessidades, [Paço das Necessidades] Lisbon. The correspondence mentions Commander D. Fernando de Serpa, an official to the King of Portugal, who, on behalf of the king, presents De Brettes' with a scientific publication for review. Signed manuscript letter by De Brettes addressed to Monsieur [Maurice] Rouvier, Minister of France, written at a hotel in Lisbon on 8 September 1905, stating that the King of Portugal [King Carlos I of Portugal - The Martyr] will be receiving him at the palace for a meeting the following day. Three manuscript telegrams written in Lisbon, also dealing with De Brettes' meeting with the king. Items of a personal nature include three photographs of De Brettes' mounted to various forms of identification, and a guest book in which he collected autographs and greetings from 1890 to 1893. Approximately half of this volume contains signatures and inscriptions made in South America, whilst De Brettes' visited Puerto Cabello in Venezuela, and Riohacha, Santa Marta and Bogotá in Colombia. On entry is a an extensive dedication written and signed at Curaçao on 7 January 1891 by Giuseppe [Joseph] Chiarini (1823-1897), a most influential circus director of international fame, who early in 1890, had returned to Central and South America, and under the Royal Spanish Circus, toured extensively Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Honduras, and San Salvador over a seven year period. Further investigation will surely lead to other significant personalities. Contemporary to De Brettes' explorations, the 1888 issue of The Scottish Geographical Magazine reported as follows (Vol 4, page 164): "Exploration of the Chaco etc.... The Paris Geographical Society has received a telegram from M. Joseph de Brettes who has been intrusted with a mission by the Minister of Public Instruction, informing it that he has recommenced his travels through the Chaco and the central region of South America. M de Brettes started about a year ago from France with the intention of following up a journey which he had begun a short time before, and of passing through the triangle in South America which is bordered by civilised and inhabited countries... an immense extent of territory which has never been surveyed and over which there are no routes or roads. This territory is called the Chaco and is sub-divided into the Northern the Central and the Southern Chaco, all three of which are inhabited by savage Indian tribes. Several efforts have been made to penetrate into the two former by water and it will be remembered that Dr. Crevaux perished three or four years ago while following the course of the Rio Pilcomayo. Other travellers have reconnoitred the course of the Rio Vermejo but it is generally agreed that these two streams are not navigable in their entire length, so M de Brettes resolved to try the land route through the Southern Chaco. His first journey was commenced in 1885, when, going up the Parana River from Buenos Ayres as far as Corrientes, he endeavoured to reach the town of Candeliard upon the opposite coast. The distance was 700 miles and M de Brettes started with a caravan consisting of two Indians and sixteen horses. When he had got 200 miles inland he came upon an immense salt lake 116 miles long and convinced himself that the land route was practicable. But upon the forty-third day of his journey he was struck down by fever, and had to return to Corrientes. His illness having left him almost without resources, he determined to come home and endeavour to interest the Geographical Society in the work. This he succeeded in doing, and though like M Douls, he is only twenty five, he is now making his second expedition to this unexplored region. - South American Journal 21st January 1888 " . Very Good.

War and Peace: A Historical Novel

New York: William S. Gottsberger, 1886. First American edition. Near Fine. First complete edition in English (following the abridged London edition of the same year) with all title-pages dated 1886 and with the proper Gottsberger imprint on versos. Six small octavo volumes (pages 6 3/16 x 4 7/16 inches; 157 x 114 mm); complete with all blanks and ads. Translated from a French edition by Clara Bell. Original dark brown cloth decoratively stamped in black and gilt and with titles in gilt. Original brown-coated endpapers, just starting to crack in vol. 2 of "The Invasion" otherwise all endpapers intact and without repair. A few volumes with very light wear at the head and tail of the spine (also without repair). Each volume with the bookplate of Arthur L Franklin on the front paste-down. The author's epic novel of the Napoleonic Wars, which gives them a human face through the poignant impact they have on several interrelated characters. A story of love and tradition amidst a crumbling society and a radically changing world. A novel brimming with enlightenment and modern theories. Virginia Woolf wrote: "There remains the greatest of all novelists-for what else can we call the author of War and Peace? . . . Even in a translation we feel that we have been set on a mountain-top and had a telescope put into our hands. Everything is astonishingly clear and absolutely sharp." Undoubtedly a masterpiece of world literature, and in our opinion, the greatest work from the Russian literary canon. Near Fine.

        Seaweed and Algea Specimens

perhaps, Santa Cruz, California, et al, c. 1886. Hardcover. Very Good. Half ornately gilt-ruled morocco and mottled cloth, "Moss Album" stamped on upper board; 227 x 305 mm; contains 74 leaves with a large seaweed or algea specimens mounted to the recto only. Backstrip perished; boards detached. Contents, on the other hand, are in excellent condition, very nicely preserved and suitable for display. Some specimens are arranged in decorative shapes (a wreath, a heart, the name "Lulu"), with tiny shells, a ribbon, or (once) a little hand-drawn card (coastal scene, labeled "Santa Cruz"). Most, however, are straightforward and simple -- unlabelled, and unadorned. This untrained cataloguer believes she spies: Soranthera ulvoidea, Sargassum muticum, Gracilariopsis sjoestedtii, Fucus gardneri, Desmarestia aculeata, and Sarcodiotheca gaudichaudii. Our only clue to the compiler's identity is the signature of Mrs. J. C. Toll, Santa Cruz, August 12th, 1886.

Edmonton: John Pearson for Bernard Quaritch, 1886. One of 50 copies, number 30 struck through on wrapper and title page, and inscribed in Muir's hand "Saturday Review". Pp. [1, blank], [2, printed title page], [3-7, Preface]. With 45 hand-colored plates in facsimile by William Muir, plus 3 pp. facsimile letter at end. 1 vols. 4to. Full autumn leaf morocco gilt, preserving wrappers, t.e.g., by Roger de Coverly. Light rubbing to front joint. Fine. Cloth slipcase. 1 vols. 4to. Blake's Milton: the Muir Facsimile in Special Binding. Notes Bentley: "[Gilchrist's 'Life'] not only multiplied the prices of his works, but it encouraged the publication of facsimiles. Of these, the most ambitious, and the most conspicously successful, were those…produced at The Blake Press at Edmonton by William Muir and his family and friends. Twelve works in Illuminated printing were issued between 1884 and 1890, printed and coloured by hand at great trouble and with considerable success. … The size of the edition was small, but their influence was appreciable, and their scope has only been equalled in recent times by the facsimiles of the Blake Trust." The MILTON facsimile was made from Copy A (1804-08), the British Museum copy; it has 45 hand-colored plates. Muir includes a three-page facsimile letter from Blake to Hayley, dated March 16, 1804, explaining the poem. It is preceded by five pages of printed text, consisting of a letter by Muir to Prince Victor of Hohenloft-Langenburg, "Your Serene Highness, and my Kind Patron" describing Blake's career and work; it mentions that the Milton is "the most difficult" of the facsimilies he has done so far, and that it has taken two years to complete. Muir's price for this facsimile was ten guineas, the highest of any of his productions. REMARKABLE. RARE. Keynes 217f; Bentley pp. 28-9

TYPES JAPONAIS Quarante Planches Dessinees et Lithographs DAI NIPPON TEIKOKU K

Tokio 1886. Black cloth spine over original illustrated. boards, very solid, corner wear, 40 lithographic plates,[40]. pages, bookplate, 28.5 x 20.5 cm., tissue guards.. FIRST & ONLY EDITION. EARLY MEIJI PERIOD JAPANESE WOMAN ARTIST DRAWINGS OF JAPAN . . AN EXCELLENT AND RARE EXAMPLE OF A JAPANESE WOMAN ARTIST'S . . GRAPHIC WORK IN THE MEIJI PERIOD: . This is an RARE example of a Japanese woman's drawing and depictions of native Japanese life in the mid-1880's. . Each drawing is numbered, with caption, and signed by the artist in the stone. . All images are with buff background, and black outline sketched, with charming skill and sensitivity. . One is "signed" by the artist in Romaji with a back wards "n" in a quaint display of the "avant-garde" use of Western alphabet during the Meiji period. Obviously anyone etching anything on stone means the opposite or 'mirror image' is what turns out to be the print. When the artist signed her work its fully expected that her name would read back wards. All others are stone-signed in Romaji by her. . SUBJECTS OF THE DRAWINGS: . A very nice insight to the Japanese at their daily life, chores, activities and diversions, including Kendo [a kind of sword fighting practice], warriors, workers, musicians, nobility, a humble shoe maker, a hair dresser and a host of Japanese women wearing the traditional Kimono in their daily life activities. . *** WHO WAS THE ARTIST WATANABE YUKOH: . Watanabe Yukoh [1856-1942] was a painter, daughter of Goseda Horyu. Pupil of her father and of her brother, Yoshimatsu. Wife of Watanabe Bunzaburo. She exhibited her work at sponsored exhibitions. She taught Western-style painting at a girl's school, became a pioneer in women's education. Specialized in portraiture, but also made lithographs of Japanese genre scenes, this work is an excellent example. * The cover of this album shows a very nice example of a self-portrait of the artist in her studio, painting what looks like a Buddhist Monk or Shinto Priest. In the lower left are two cinnabar-red Hanko [seals], most likely her own Hanko [seals or chops]. . *** THE GENRE OF THE MEIJI PERIOD: At this very early time in Meiji Japan, there were very few women artists who openly produced and provided art work for her own book. This is a great example of a liberated and most independent-minded Japanese woman's production of examples of her art for the world audience. The title page is written in French, indicating consideration that her book would be distributed in France. Indeed a very rare example. . Few other Japanese women left their artistic in terms of a published and illustrated book, leaving her mark on this period in Japanese art history. *** REFERENCES: Yokohama Bijutsu Kan: BAKUMATSU, MEIJI NO YOKOHAMA TEN: YOKOHAMA 1859-1899: New Visions, New Representations, she is listed on pp. 131-132, diagram numbers 173-174, cited & illustrated. * ROBERTS, Laurance P.: A DICTIONARY OF JAPANESE ARTISTS: PAINTING, SCULPTURE, CERAMICS, PRINTS, LACQUER, lists her on p.194. * YOKOHAMA MUSEUM OF ART.:SELECTED WORKS FROM THE COLLECTION, 1989. see p.66-67,#29, with biography of the artist in English & Japanese. *** Color scans can be sent by email.
