        Collected Works

1886 - ROSSETTI, Dante Gabriel. The Collected Works. London: Ellis and Scrutton, 1886. Two volumes. Thick small octavo, early 20th-century full blue morocco gilt, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, watered silk doublures, top edges gilt, uncut; original cloth bound in. $1500.First collected edition of Dante Rossetti's poems and translations, edited by his brother, handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf. The copy of New York City mayor and shipping magnate W.R. Grace."A superb poet". From his earliest contributions to The Germ [a pre-Raphaelite literary magazine]". to the last unpublished poems collected by his brother, his strange genius is evident" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 534-45). Volume I includes Rossetti's verse (including his acclaimed sonnet sequence "The House of Life") and various prose tales and essays; Volume II features the author's translations, especially of Dante Alighieri. With introductory essay by Rossetti's brother William. Original blue cloth-gilt bound into both volumes. Simultaneously issued in a large-paper edition of only 30 copies, bound in four volumes. Rossetti 42. CBEL III:271. Armorial bookplate of New York City mayor and shipping magnate William Russell Grace. Today, Grace is best known as the founder of the steamship and trading company W.R. Grace, which began as a small firm exporting products out of Peru and quickly bought other companies until it became the large international corporation it is today. It was through his philanthropy that Grace became mayor of New York City. A well-publicized donation of $40,000 in supplies for famine-struck Ireland made him a popular public figure and he won the 1880 election without any political experience. By 1884, his tough stance against corruption had earned him a reputation as a reformer and succeeded in winning him a second term. Grace was a self-made multi-millionaire and remained an avid book collector right up until his death. Bookplate.Joints slightly tender. A lovely copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Arizona Champion Newspaper October 16, 1886

Flagstaff, Arizona 1886 - A scarce early issue of the Arizona Champion from October 16, 1886. Tears up to two inches, chips, penciled margin notes, and margin dampstains. Leaves are separated. One editorial discusses how Geronimo has been more popular since his surrender than before it, with another report from a former governor stating that General Miles' conditional surrender was best for peace. There is a notice from early Grand Canyon tourist guide and developer John Hance stating his claim to land at Grand Canyon. Another column answers the question "Are Cowboys Degenerating?", and one article argues that Flagstaff really needs a bank. Two other columns feature the illustrated brands and a reward proclamation for the Mogollon Live Stock Protective Association, with the brands of many well-known early Flagstaff ranchers. A timetable of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad, a company instrumental in the land deals and settlement of northern Arizona, is on the front page. The Arizona Champion was published in Flagstaff from 1884-1891, when it became the Coconino Sun. The paper recorded much on northern Arizona's early ranching industry and development. ; 23 1/2" x 17 1/4"; 4 pp

Two Autograph Letters Signed, to "my dear Alice" [Jackson]

1886. Four pages each, Hampstead Heath (London) 1886 and Maryhill (Glasgow) [1892]. (Mrs.) Alice Jackson, of Kirkbuddo near Forfar, Angus, Scotland, was a friend of the Scottish fantasy novelist George Macdonald; both letters begin "My dear Alice".~The first letter is on mourning stationery of "Cedar Lawn, Hampstead Heath N.W." and is dated by hand "Aug. 19, 1886." It reads:~You see I do not like to forget old times, and so acknowledge a victory of the old bald man with the scythe [Father Time?] -- therefore call you by the old name. It was I fear rather a rude thing to send that packet without a letter, but I was greatly occupied, and let it go without its chaperon. It ought to have been sent to you long before. Since then I have been to see my mother and uncle. They are indeed both wonderfully well. I wish I could see them often, but even next Monday we start again for Bordighera [on the Italian Riviera]. You may be sure if we were near you we should be very glad to go & see you. If my wife were by me she would send her love. Please remember me most kindly to Dr. Jackson. You will surely be coming to the Riviera some day? Pardon haste, & believe me yours affectionately, George MacDonald".~The second letter is on stationery of "Killermont, Maryhill" and is dated "Glasgow Sunday night" but with the accompanying envelope (addressed to "Mrs. Jackson | Kirkbuddo | near Forfar") postmarked Aberdeen Feb. 19, 1892 and again on the back Forfar Feb. 20. This letter reads:~I still may call you so [My dear Alice] -- may I not? It is very kind of you to want me to come to you, but I do not see how I am to do it, for I am so much occupied. I preached in Glasgow this morning. Tomorrow & Tuesday I lecture here, Wednesday at Dundee, Thursday at Stirling, and Friday at Aberdeen. Then come Peterhead, Banff, Inverness, Huntly next week, and Sunday at Bristol. I had given the arrangement of my lectures into the hands of Mr Smith the bookseller at Aberdeen, and he did not favour the idea of Forfar [near Alice]. But if anyone there would take the thing up, I would try to come to you next year, if I come again so far north, for then, I suppose, I might have the pleasure of being your guest. This time I fear it cannot be managed, without more fatigue than I ought to encounter while having to work. From now till the end of October I have every night occupied, or at most two, more likely only one, disengaged -- Sundays also are occupied. My wife is not with me, nor one of my people. You see I am allowed to go about alone now, I am so much better. I have been working as hard as ever in my life -- with the proofs of four books sometimes on my table at once. I mention this as some excuse for not having written to you, as I fear you think I ought to have done. But at the time it did not seem imperative, and so, in the much that must be done, I let it pass. Thanking you again for your kind letter, I am always yours affectionately George MacDonald.~Both letters are in fine condition, folded when mailed.

Thick octavo, contemporary three-quarter brown morocco gilt, raised bands, top edges gilt; partially unopened. $1750.Handsomely bound 1886 illustrated edition of the entire series of Walpole's correspondence. With 39 engraved portraits throughout of Walpole and his correspondents.Walpole (1717-97) is among the small group of writers of whom it may be said that their letters form their major work. In Walpole's correspondence, printed gradually throughout the nineteenth century, "it is not too much to say that there is scarcely a dull page". In these epistles to Mann, to Montagu, to Mason, to Conway, to Lady Hervey, to Lady Ossory, to Hannah More, and a host of others, almost every element of wit and humour, variety and charm, is present. For gossip, anecdote, epigram, description, illustration, playfulness, pungency, novelty, surprise, there is nothing quite like them in English" (DNB XX, 632).         tissé d'après les Enluminures des Manuscrits du XIVe au XVIe Siècle

Four full-page illus. & each page within a decorative border, all taken from early illuminated MSS. 50 pages. Small 4to, orig. Jansenist-style binding of morocco by J. Kauffmann-Petit & Maillard, doublures of blue morocco richly gilt & inlaid to a retrospective Renaissance motif consisting of green, brown, & blue morocco interlocking strap-work, five raised bands on spine, top & bottom edges gilt. Lyon: [A. Henry for A. Roux], 1886-88. This is one of the true marvels of nineteenth-century technology in the service of the "Book Arts," and absolutely must be seen to be fully appreciated. It is a spectacular neo-Gothic Book of Prayers, made of silvery-grey and black silk thread, woven together by means of the Jacquard automated loom method, the results being accurate to within one-tenth of a millimeter. There is a strange and wondrous dimensionality in these pages, which without exaggeration can be said to shimmer. The book also represents an important technical innovation: hundreds of thousands of punched cards were employed as automated weaving instructions, conveyed to an array of mechanized looms. It took two years of programming and weaving to create approximately 60 copies. At the time of its invention, in 1801, the Jacquard loom was the most complex programmable machine in existence. The incredible potential of the "Operations / Variables" punched card system, with its binary data and modern "Input / Output / Storage" capabilities, was seized upon by English visionary Charles Babbage, who integrated the process into his theoretical "Analytical Engine." James Essinger has argued convincingly that the Jacquard loom was pivotal in the in the development of computer science (see Jacquard's Web: How a Hand-loom led to the Birth of the Information Age, 2004). With uncanny prescience, the data input mechanisms and intricate algorithms that created the present volume prefigure modern computer automation and computer programming: input consisting of complex instructions conveyed to the mechanical looms by means of punched cards; output in the form preconceived patterns; and memory in which the instructions can be stored and subsequently recovered. Lillian Randall determined that the "illuminations" in the present Prayer Book actually came from a single source, namely a late 19th-century monograph published by Gruel and Engelmann: Imitation de Jésus-Christ, which contained reproductions of a variety of illuminated manuscripts from the 14th through the 16th-century. Our copy is in a perfect state of preservation and in an unusually elaborate version of the standard binding. Preserved in the original velvet-lined box. ? For a detailed account of the technical intricacies see: Paul Marais, "Livre de Prières tissé" in the Bulletin du Bibliophile (1889), pp. 163-66. Bowden, Faster than Thought: The Invention of Perforated Cards by M. Jacquard (London: 1953), pp. 23, 350-51, & 379-80. Michael Laird in The World from Here. Treasures of the Great Libraries of Los Angeles (edited by C. Burlingham & B. Whiteman, 2001), 63-"Despite the fact that this rare volume is not a printed book, it is of singular interest in that it was completely woven with silver and black silk thread. It also represents an extremely early book production involving automation and programming...The book was manufactured on silk looms that were programmed using the punched-card system developed by Joseph-Marie Jacquard (1752-1834). Several hundred thousand cards were required to program this curious magnum opus (the actual figure is not known, but estimates range from 106,000 to 500,000). After fifty failed attempts, it took two years to weave approximately sixty copies…It will be observed that the weave in the present volume is almost microscopic (it is exactly four hundred weft threads for every 2.5 centimeters [approximately one inch])…The movement of the machine was limited to one tenth of a millimeter, the result being an extremely precise piece of bookmaking, which, on account of the material used, truly gleams. It is noteworthy that Jacquard's looms, only slightly modified, are still in use today, producing some of the world's finest fabric for furniture. The punched instructional cards utilized by Jacquard's weaving machinery served as the primary inspiration for the famous 'Analytical Engine' conceived by Charles Babbage (1791-1871)…The present volume may represent the first, and probably the only, successful attempt at weaving a book.".

PHANTOM LOVER: A FANTASTIC STORY .

Roberts Brothers, Boston 1886 - Small octavo, pp. [1-2] [1] ii [3] 4-134, original mustard cloth, front and spine panels stamped in red. First U.S. edition. "Of Lee's best fiction, only two stories are set outside of Italy. In its quiet way, the earlier of these -- first published in booklet form as A PHANTOM LOVER (1886) and subsequently in HAUNTINGS (1890) as 'Oke of Okehurst' -- is as much a tour de force as her flamboyant Don Juan fantasy "The Virgin of the Seven Daggers" (written 1889; published in FOR MAURICE, 1927). Perhaps somewhat undervalued because of its drenched, tepid English setting, and because its protagonists are at least superficially routine creations, 'Oke of Okehurst' nevertheless demonstrates that its author, in 1886, breathed the same literary atmosphere as Henry James and was capable of anticipating some of his explorations into the relationship between the narrator and what he narrates . If the contemporary reader detects an adumbration here of Henry James's 'The Turn of the Screw' (1898), he is unlikely to be misguided. 'Oke of Okehurst' depicts a folie a trois, and the reader is left as ambivalent about what truly happened as he is clearly meant to be in the later tale. Lee's novella can only gain by being read as an early tour de force in the presentation of an unreliable narrator. In this light, a quiet, overextended anecdote can be seen as a tale of genuine horror" - John Clute, Bleiler (ed), Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy and Horror, pp. 331-32. "Her first important supernatural fiction . Along with the later 'The Turn of the Screw' (1898) by her friend Henry James, A PHANTOM LOVER fits remarkably well into Tsetvan Todorov's definition of the fantastic. A painter becomes obsessed with the similarity (almost certainly a matter of his own perception) between the woman he is painting and her ancestor, who was involved in a family tragedy. By the end of the tale, he has generated an uncanny further tragedy." - Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 570. "The tale is very subtly told and is by no means clear. Is it a story of marital discord, petty sadism, and madness? Is there really a ghostly lover? Is Mrs. Oke possessed? What share does the artist have in the events? Lee is not easily pinned down." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 256. Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 114. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 2-48. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 988. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 136 (rebound; lacking wrappers). Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-143. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 326. Bleiler (1978), p. 121. Reginald 08779. NCBEL III 1445. Topp, Victorian Yellowbacks & Paperbacks, 1849-1905, VII, p. 327. Touch of wear to lower spine end, dust soiling to cloth (to be expected on this light colored binding), a very good copy. This edition is as elusive as its British counterpart.
