Typed letter signed to musicologist Henry Prunières

      - 1 page. Quarto. Dated Le Belvédère, Montfort L'Amaury (S. & O.), June 6, [19]24. Typed in blue ink on personal letterhead with embossed initials and address of the composer at head. One amendation and composer's signature in black ink. In French (with translation). Ravel mentions no fewer than three of his works in this letter: L'enfant et les sortilèges; the Sonata for Piano and Violin; and the original piano-vocal version of the song, Ronsard à son Âme. Ravel and his dedicatee, the lyric soprano Marcelle Gerar, are dismayed because the song, which was to be published in Prunières's journal, La Revue musicale, lacks its dedication."From now until the first months of next year, I must finish: 1. a lyric work which is hardly begun [L'enfant. ]. 2. the Sonata for Piano and Violin, which is only half-finished. I'm not budging anymore for the whole year, and I must forget America." Creased at folds and somewhat overall; occasional light staining; two small rust holes to upper portion from early pin; signature slightly faded. Henry Prunieres (1886-1942) was a French musicologist who founded and directed the monthly periodical La Revue musicale from 1921 until 1939. Ravel composed Ronsard à son Âme for a special issue of the Revue celebrating the 400th anniversary of Pierre de Ronsard's birth in 1924. Marcelle Gerar (a.k.a. Marcelle Regerau) and Ravel premiered the song at Aeolian Hall in London in 1924; Ravel orchestrated it in 1935. As this and other letters attest, Ravel "worked unremittingly" on L'enfant et les sortilèges "throughout 1924 and the early months of 1925, and it was ready just in time for the première," in Monte Carlo on March 21, 1925. "(Five days before, he was writing to Colette [the librettist], asking her for words to fit a few recently composed bars.) The work was conducted by Victor de Sabata, with ballet sequences by the young [George] Balanchine." Roger Nichols in Grove Music Online.Although begun in 1923, the Sonata no. 2 in G major for Violin and Piano was not completed until 1927. "The writing continues the tradition of the Sonata for Violin and Cello, with considerable independence of the parts, a sparse texture, and some bitonal passages. The blues movement marks the composer's second adaptation of jazz, and the virtuoso perpetuum mobile continues in the tradition of Tzigane. As customary, the work is tightly organized, with material from the first and second movements recurring in the finale." Orenstein: Ravel Man and Musician, p. 198. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Charles Scribner's Sons 1886 - First State of the First Edition, First printing One of the very scarce first printing hardback examples issued in green cloth. The US edition preceded the UK edition as the true first printing. An important title in the horror genre. The Scribner edition was published 5 January 1886, four days before the British edition was published by Longmans, Green. 4200 copies were printed of which only 1200 were issued as a hardback in green cloth, and the remaining 3000 were issued in paper wrappers. This is one of the scarce hardback editions issued in green cloth. ¿a Faustian moral fable which takes the form of a tale of mystery and horror. It precedes Oscar Wilde¿s THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY (1891), which in some respects resembles it, by five years, and is the prototype of all stories of multiple personality, transformation and possession; in some respects it is also a tale of drug dependency.¿ ¿ Clute and Nicholls. ¿A classic in the genre, it has been historically one of the most important stories in late Victorian literature.¿ ¿ Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2094. ¿. one of the supreme works of horror literature, setting the pattern for and influencing as many imitations as DRACULA.¿ ¿ Sullivan (ed) The book is in beautiful condition with slight bumping to the corners. Clean green boards with gilt titles to the front and spine. The book has benefited from rebacking laying the original cloth back down. The book has no edgewear, and the binding is very tight and square. The originally end papers are present with bookplate and scripted owner name and date (1886) All pages are present and are remarkably clean with no stains and no foxing. Please see many detailed images. A very handsome example of this scarce title in very clean collectible condition. Perfect for a horror collector, or a collector of the classic landmark titles.       1886. being Memoirs of the Adventures of David Balfour in the Year 1751. [London:] Cassell & Company, 1886. 1 page undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated Apr 1886. Original terra-cotta cloth. First Edition, first issue. In mid-18th Century Scotland, 17-year-old David Balfour is cheated out of his inheritance by a greedy uncle, who has him kidnapped and shipped to the Carolinas; with numerous challenges Balfour manages to get back to Scotland to fight to regain his property and his name. Stevenson began KIDNAPPED early in 1885 "partly as a lark, partly as a pot-boiler" (according to himself); he finished it in Spring 1886, having interrupted it part way through to write DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE. He had accepted Sidney Colvin's suggestion to cut short the novel and leave the rest for a sequel (which he did, with DAVID BALFOUR / CATRIONA, in 1893).~This is a copy of the first issue (with "name his business" on p. 40, "nine o'clock" on p. 64, and "Long Islands" on p. 101). The ads also are in the first (April) state (some first-issue copies have the July ads that are present in the second issue). This copy's color is terra-cotta, one of several used without priority.~This is a near-fine copy, with scarcely any soil or wear (spine very slightly darkened, one very faint rub on the front cover, the volume only slightly askew); the original endpapers are not cracked, and the gilt lettering on the spine remains rather bright. We seldom see the first issue in much better condition. Beinecke 378; Princeton 31 (copies 1-4).

Bird's Eye View of Confederate Prison Pen at Salisbury, N.C. Taken in 1864

J.H. Bufford & Sons, 1886 - FASCINATING VIEW OF CIVIL WAR SCENE Copyright to C.A. Kraus. 25 3/4 x 36 1/2 inches, hand-colored lithograph, plate legend on bottom bearing title, location, and date, as well as a 12-item key identifying the key sites (toning consistent with age). This composition, compiled from a sketch made on site in 1864, presents a panoramic view of the Confederate Prison Pen at Salisbury, North Carolina toward the end of the Civil War. We see the camp from a bird’s-eye-view, set up on the grounds of a large "cotton factory" in which the prisoners were ordered to work as factory laborers. The prison pen is guarded and enclosed by a stockade. We also see the tents and pits dug into the ground where Union soldiers were forced to live. The print includes a 12-item key identifying the multi-story cotton factory in the center, black smith’s shop, officers’ quarters, headquarters and the escape tunnel. Hole from which Prisoners Tunneled and Escaped). Human figures--both prisoners and guards--are rendered with great detail and clarity throughout the composition. The use of perspective in the hills on the horizon powerfully conveys the stark contrast between the closed-in environment of the prison camp in the foreground and the wide open spaces that surround it. J. H. Bufford & Sons was a print shop in Boston that consisted of John Henry Bufford (1810-1870) and his sons Frank G. Bufford and John Henry Bufford, Jr. J.H. Bufford honed his craft in the Pendleton shop in Boston between the years 1829 and 1831, before moving to New York in 1835 to launch a career as an independent lithographer, working with notable printers such as George Endicott and Nathaniel Currer. In 1839, Bufford returned to his hometown of Boston and became the chief artist of Benjamin W. Thayer’s shop. In 1844, the name changed to J.H. Bufford & Co. Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery describes the works produced by Bufford as "lively, accomplished images in many forms, including sheet music, city views, marine views and landscapes," quoting one American reviewer: "Bufford's lithographs are sold wherever the flag of our country waves." Catalogued by Xueli Wang, Columbia University, BA; Courtauld Institute of Art, MA. You are warmly invited to visit our gallery at 1016 Madison Avenue in New York City to view this work whenever it might be convenient. It is my intention to have highly competitive prices.         3 autograph letters signed ("GMaspero"). Paris & Ecuré, 1886-1916.

1886. (Large) 8vo. A total of 3 pp. (5 ff.). Includes an autograph envelope. To an unidentified recipient about the scheduled unwrapping of the mummy of Pharaoh Me(r)nephta: "On déroule Ménephta demain à partir de 9 heures ou 9¼; ne l'oubliez pas [...]" (Cairo, 7 July 1907). - Merneptah was originally buried within tomb KV8 in the Valley of the Kings, but his mummy was not found there. In 1898 it was located along with eighteen other mummies in the mummy cache found in the tomb of Amenhotep II by Victor Loret. Merneptah's mummy was taken to Cairo and eventually unwrapped by Dr. G. Elliott Smith on July 8, 1907, who noted that "the body is that of an old man and is 1 meter 714 millimeters in height. Merneptah was almost completely bald, only a narrow fringe of white hair (now cut so close as to be seen only with difficulty) remaining on the temples and occiput. A few short (about 2 mill) black hairs were found on the upper lip and scattered, closely clipped hairs on the cheeks and chin. The general aspect of the face recalls that of Ramesses II, but the form of the cranium and the measurements of the face much more nearly agree with those of his [grand]father, Seti the Great". - Another letter to Madame Albert Robin about an invitation (22 October 1886), and another to the historian and archaeologist Paul Esdouhard d'Anisy about his admiration for the beauty of Roger van der Weyden's polyptychon "The Last Judgment" in Beaune (5 April 1916). - After the death of Auguste Mariette in 1881, Gaston Maspero succeeded him as head of the Egyptian Service d'Antiquités Égyptiennes and director of the Bulaq museum, today the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. In 1886 he resumed work begun by Mariette to uncover the Sphinx, removing more than 65 feet of sand and seeking tombs below it. He also introduced admission charges for Egyptian sites to the increasing number of tourists to pay for their upkeep and maintenance.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. O. O., 25. VI. 1886.

1886. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. - Wohlerhalten. Gedruckt in: Louise von François und Conrad Ferdinand Meyer. Ein Briefwechsel (2.         American Yacht List 1886 Olsen Bessey Club Pennants Signals Flags color plates

1886 - The American Yacht List for 1886- Contains a Complete Register of the yacht Clubs of the United States and British Provinces with list of Officers, Names of Vessels and Owners, Addresses. also, facsimilies in chromo-lithograph of Club Pennants. Compiled by Niels Olsen Issued New York, 1886 by Henry Bessey, Steam Book and Job Printing pp. 230; 18 lovely chromolithographed color plates of the endless variety of nautical flags/ pennants, wonderful illustrated full page advertisements. With the original book seller tag of Thomas Manning- Yachting & Naval Books, 53 Beaver Street, NYC affixed to front paste-down. The color plates are devoted to grouping by clubs, schooners, steamers, sloops, cutters & Yawls as well as one which shows the U. S. Signal Service flags including"Coston's Telegraphic Night Signals" of letters. Period oblong cloth binding. outline ruled in blind concentric boxes, central large gilt pictorial device to front cover of the official club seal. Back cover is a different and more splendid ornate gilt pictorial advertisement for Durkee's Gauntlet Brand of Salad dressing and cold meat sauces. Photos capture better than words. Book is old. Further details below. In Good+ and in our opinion, completely acceptable condition for the vast majority of people. Old books are rarely perfect and if near flawless (almost as new) is what you seek, you will not find it with this item. Further condition details: Covers lightly age soiled, edges and corners lightly rubbed or age worn as seen, small old stain along the bottom edge of front cover, etc.- nothing offensive and the book still looks great. Textblock with some light minor scattered signs of usage, the binding is slightly shaken as typical due to the extremely fragile nature of most 19th century oblong bound hardback books, nothing heavy or unusual. Overall the book remains clean, tight & sound. A beautiful and very scarce 19th century color plate nautical book with a fantastic modern aesthetic appeal. The advertising is often as good as the flag plates in terms of concept and image. There is a lot of advertising for a wide range of products, clearly a very particular cross-section of the business economy of this era. A picture is worth a thousand words. Please examine pictures closely, as what you see is what we will send you. We enjoy old objects with small age flaws and feel they display character. We believe that slight wear to an old object gives it a modern appeal which exceeds the same item in untouched almost perfect condition. [note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws. We feel accuracy and understatement are virtues and we endeavor to practice them at all times in our listings.] Overall sound and despite any age flaws, still an interesting and very desirable historical book well worthy of ownership for any collection and/ or display. We've done our best to photograph the book so you can accurately see the condition and we've tried our very best to mention any flaws or issues. Measures c.6 "H x 9 3/4" W.[A6560] [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Surveying the Interior Regions of Gran Chaco & the Kogi People Using a Cranial Measuring Tool

South America, 1886-1905. Archive of French explorer Joseph de Brettes who made four expeditions to South America including two to the not yet surveyed interior regions of Gran Chaco, consisting of a steel cranial measuring device used during his ethnographic examinations of the Arhuaco-Kagaba Indians (Kogi people) found in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, northern Colombia, a steel archaeological specimen, two offprint accounts written and illustrated by de Brettes describing his expeditions and scientific work in South America, and an offprint bibliographical outline of de Brettes' extensive explorations in South America and elsewhere as well as his naval and army service. All text is in French. A unique nineteenth century explorer's archive of documents, artifacts, and signatures. Together with personalia, including an album of autographs largely collected whilst in South America, 3 photographic identification cards, his personal library bookplate, a manuscript caricature drawing, a manuscript note to which is affixed a photograph of his family's grave site, and an offprint poem signed and dedicated by French poet Jehan Rictus in which is inserted a separate autographed note by Rictus both addressed to de Brettes. Together with correspondence connected with his efforts as Vice-President of a Portuguese railway company, in particular dealing with a meeting with the King, including 3 manuscript telegrams sent from Lisbon September 1905, and 2 manuscript letters dated 1905. Joseph de Brettes (1861-1934) made two geographical explorations to Chaco in South America, first in 1886, and again in 1888. From 1892 to 1893 he was exploring Colombia and making sociological and ethnographical observations of the Arhuaco and the Kogi people in the Sierra Nevada region. After a sojourn in France, he returned for further reconnaissance work in Colombia from 1895 to 1898. A skillful explorer, surveyor, and author of several notable works on the subject, a most ambitious businessman and delegate, recipient of several awards, all-but-forgotten today, the Bliothèque Nationale de France holds a collection of photographs, manuscripts and published works from de Brettes' illustrious career. From de Brettes' explorations and ethnographic studies in South America, the archive includes the following: A seldom seen nineteenth century cranial measuring device, being a simple clamp-styled metal apparatus in original and still functional conditional, measuring 28 cm tall when closed, and 33 cm wide when fully extended. This type of craniometry tool was used in the field of physical anthropology during the 19th century, and the first part of the 20th century. De Brettes' would have used this during his ethnographic examinations of the Arhuaco-Kagaba Indians (Kogi people) of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, northern Colombia. [Craniometry is the measurement of the cranium, usually the human skull. It is a subset of cephalometry, measurement of the head, which falls under the science of anthropometry which is the measurement of the human individual.] De Brettes' own working copy of his title, "Mission géographique dans le Chaco (Amérique du Sud)" published in 1889 immediately upon return from his expedition, and being a riveting account of travel through the Formosa province of Argentina and the Gran Chaco plains, partly along the Pilcomayo River, including hostile encounters with so-called "savage Indian tribes," and other perils. Small 8vo. 44 pages, titled wrappers. Replete with the author's annotations for a revised edition. Rare Offprint from the proceeding of the Anthropological Society of Paris, 1903. Title: "Les Indiens Arhouaques-Kaggabas. Réponses au questionnaire de sociologie et d'ethnographie de la Société d'anthropologie" by Joseph de Brettes. 8vo. 36 pages with in-text illustrations, titled wrappers. Chips to extremities, age-toning, else very good condition. An ornate archaeological specimen made of heavy steel and measuring approximately 8,5 x 3 x 1 cm. A detailed offprint bibliographical sketch of de Brettes' extensive explorations in Argentina and Colombia (1895), Tunisia, and elsewhere, as well as his naval and army service, also recording important meetings with monarchs and delegates, military assignments, and much more. Pertaining to de Brette's work in Portugal developing railroads, we find the following correspondence: Signed manuscript letter, Lisbon, 27 April 1905, from Albert Girard, whose office was at the king's court in the Palace of Necessidades, [Paço das Necessidades] Lisbon. The correspondence mentions Commander D. Fernando de Serpa, an official to the King of Portugal, who, on behalf of the king, presents de Brettes' with a scientific publication for review. Signed manuscript letter by de Brettes addressed to Monsieur [Maurice] Rouvier, Minister of France, written at a hotel in Lisbon on 8 September 1905, stating that the King of Portugal [King Carlos I of Portugal - The Martyr] will be receiving him at the palace for a meeting the following day. Three manuscript telegrams written in Lisbon, also dealing with de Brettes' meeting with the king. Items of a personal nature include three photographs of de Brettes' mounted to various forms of identification, and a guest book in which he collected autographs and greetings from 1890 to 1893. Approximately half of this volume contains signatures and inscriptions made in South America, whilst de Brettes' visited Puerto Cabello in Venezuela, and Riohacha, Santa Marta and Bogotá in Colombia. On entry is a an extensive dedication written and signed at Curaçao on 7 January 1891 by Giuseppe [Joseph] Chiarini (1823-1897), a most influential circus director of international fame, who early in 1890, had returned to Central and South America, and under the Royal Spanish Circus, toured extensively Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Honduras, and San Salvador over a seven year period. Further investigation will surely lead to other significant personalities. Contemporary to de Brettes' explorations, the 1888 issue of The Scottish Geographical Magazine reported as follows (Vol 4, page 164): "Exploration of the Chaco etc.... The Paris Geographical Society has received a telegram from M. Joseph de Brettes who has been entrusted with a mission by the Minister of Public Instruction, informing it that he has recommenced his travels through the Chaco and the central region of South America. M de Brettes started about a year ago from France with the intention of following up a journey which he had begun a short time before, and of passing through the triangle in South America which is bordered by civilized and inhabited countries... an immense extent of territory which has never been surveyed and over which there are no routes or roads. This territory is called the Chaco and is sub-divided into the Northern the Central and the Southern Chaco, all three of which are inhabited by savage Indian tribes. Several efforts have been made to penetrate into the two former by water and it will be remembered that Dr. Crevaux perished three or four years ago while following the course of the Rio Pilcomayo. Other travellers have reconnoitred the course of the Rio Vermejo but it is generally agreed that these two streams are not navigable in their entire length, so M de Brettes resolved to try the land route through the Southern Chaco. His first journey was commenced in 1885, when, going up the Parana River from Buenos Ayres as far as Corrientes, he endeavoured to reach the town of Candeliard upon the opposite coast. The distance was 700 miles and M de Brettes started with a caravan consisting of two Indians and sixteen horses. When he had got 200 miles inland he came upon an immense salt lake 116 miles long and convinced himself that the land route was practicable. But upon the forty-third day of his journey he was struck down by fever, and had to return to Corrientes. His illness having left him almost without resources, he determined to come home and endeavour to interest the Geographical Society in the work. This he succeeded in doing, and though like M Douls, he is only twenty five, he is now making his second expedition to this unexplored region. - South American Journal 21st January 1888 "

Introductory title and dedication leaves hand colored, chapter headings and a few other illustrations hand colored, oval albumen photographic portrait of Alice Liddell pasted at end along with small autograph note “happy summer days THE END” folded over last leaf. On verso of half-title is the following inscription, To Mr. Nichol Schattenstein with the compliments of Eldridge R. Johnson in memory of a very fine portrait that took several summer days Camden N.J. U.S.A. 1932. A most interesting association copy, specially prepared for the recipient. Eldridge Johnson, founder of Victor Talking Machine Company and avid collector of books and art, bought from A.S.W. Rosenbach the manuscript of Alice in 1928. Nikol Schattenstein, a Russian painter who moved to the US in 1920, painted portraits almost exclusively, and Rosenbach hosted numerous exhibitions of his work from at least the mid-1920s to mid-1930s, publishing catalogues of them regularly. Rosenbach himself commissioned his own portrait from Schattenstein, which now is displayed in the Rosenbach Museum & Library. I expect that Rosenbach introduced Johnson to Schattenstein, and Johnson and his wife had their portraits painted by him in 1932; they are illustrated in an exhibit catalogue published by Rosenbach in 1934. In the meantime, Johnson had decided to reprint this 1886 facsimile of the Alice manuscript, and had it collotyped by Max Jaffe in Vienna in 1936, issuing it in a finely bound limited edition. It also appears Johnson had bought the remaining unbound sheets of this 1886 facsimile and had them bound to give away to friends, perhaps having it reprinted in Vienna once he exhausted that supply. This copy, however, is from the original 1886 issue (with black coated endpapers) and has been extra-illustrated by Johnson for presentation to Schattenstein. Johnson Eldridge Johnson was born in Wilmington, Delaware on February 18, 1867 to Asa S. Johnson and Caroline Reeves Johnson. Upon his mother’s death in 1869 he was sent to live with his mother’s sister and her husband on their farm in the northern Kent County near Smyrna. Asa remarried, and at age ten young Johnson moved to Dover to live with his father and stepmother. Johnson attended the Delaware Academy with the hopes of attending college. However, he was a poor student and upon his graduation in 1882 at fifteen, the Academy’s director told him “you are too God damned dumb to go to college. Go and learn a trade.” Thus, in 1883 Johnson was apprenticed to J. Lodge & Son, a machine repair shop in Philadelphia. In 1888, his apprenticeship was completed and Johnson became a machinist at the recently established Scull Machine Shop in Camden, New Jersey. John Warwick Scull had graduated from Lehigh University the previous year with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and his father Andrew financed the purchase of the building at 108 N. Front Street in Camden for his son to set up shop in. Later that year, John W. Scull died suddenly. Johnson became foreman and manager, while the father continued on as owner. At the time of his death, John W. Scull had been working on the development of a bookbinding machine. Johnson completed the design of the machine but shortly thereafter decided to head west to seek his fortune. While he ultimately made it as far west as Washington state, the work Johnson found in the west was of the manual labor variety. Thus, by 1891 he had returned to Philadelphia. After two years and $50,000 of investment, in 1900 Johnson was prepared t [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1886. 8vo (178 x 114 mm). 3 pp. In French, with date, the word "Confidential" and the opening salutation "Dear Doctor" at head of first page in Pasteur's hand. On stationery imprinted with his monogram, to an unidentified doctor: "I would be much obliged to you if you could have the letter enclosed herewith given to Representative Wiedersperg, in relation to the motion he just presented to the Austrian Parliament and that was so successful, as it should have been. I also know that it was put together with you in mind. I have just received from Dr. Von Frisch the pamphlet containing the sum of his experiments with rabies, a document I have been anxiously awaiting in order to respond to the 16 proposals that appeared in The Medical Week of December 30. What a disappointment! Frisch's pamphlet is so faulty that I will not engage in criticizing it. His experiments and arguments are not worthy of any attention. I will only talk about it if authorized people think it important, no doubt out of ignorance of the issue. That doctor surely deceived me! Since his coming by my laboratory, I had been inclined to consider him an impartial scientist, well versed in experimental practices. I feel disillusioned and, to be brief, I will only give you one justification: he finds Benzi and Amozzo s experiments and their consequences to be good, only too happy to note that they coincide with his own. And when I contradict him with my own positive results and call his negative, he denies me the right to judge his work, and claims that his results are positive. No discussion is possible with a man whose reasoning lacks scientific logic". - Pasteur's own rabies experiments had indeed been successful. In April 1882, he undertook research that proved to be the most spectacular of all-the preventive treatment of rabies. After experimenting with inoculations of saliva from infected animals, he came to the conclusion that the virus was also present in the nerve centers, and he demonstrated that a portion of the medulla oblongata of a rabid dog, when injected into the body of a healthy animal, produced symptoms of rabies. By further work on the dried tissues of infected animals and the effect of time and temperature on these tissues, he was able to obtain a weakened form of the virus that could be used for inoculation. Having detected the rabies virus by its effects on the nervous system and attenuated its virulence, he applied his procedure to man; on 6 July 1885, he saved the life of a nine-year-old boy, Joseph Meister, who had been bitten by a rabid dog. The experiment was an outstanding success, opening the road to protection from a terrible disease.

Exposition - L'UN POUR L'AUTRE, LES ECRIVAINS DESSINENT.
