Also sprach Zarathustra. Ein Buch für Alle und Keinen. In drei Theilen.

Leipzig, Fritzsch, (1886) - [text recte 1883-84]. Lex 8vo. Very nice a bit later brown half calf with gilt spine. First and last leaf a bit browned and a bit of light brownspotting to the corner of the first leaves. Otherwise very nice and clean. A fine, fresh copy. 114; (4), 103, (1); (4), 119, (1) pp. First edition, title-issue, of Nietzsche's main work, in which the concept of the "Superman" (or "Overman") in introduced. This is actually the first printings of these three parts, but the many remainders were sold and issued with a new title-page (with no year, but 1886). Only 45 copies of the exceedingly scarce privately printed fourth part were issued, the first trade edition of which is from 1892."These books present several historical problems but none more confusing than their publication dates. It is difficult to determine when - and in some cases, if - the books were ever released for public sale..." (Schaberg, p. 88). It is difficult to overestimate the impact of Nietzsche's magnum opus. With this work he realizes his ideal of the poet-philosopher. It is, at the same time, a towering literary achievement and the most profound inquiry in the key notions of his philosophy (the Superman, the eternal return of the same).Schaberg: 45.

How he was Kidnapped and Cast away; his Sufferings in a Desert Isle; his Journey in the Wild Highlands; his Acquaintance with Alan Breck Stewart and other notorious Highland Jacobites; with all that he Suffered at the hands of his Uncle, Ebenezer Balfour of Shaws, falsely so-called: Written by Himself, and now set forth by Robert Louis Stevenson. London: Cassell & Company, Limited, 1886. First edition, first issue, with "business" instead of "pleasure" on p. 40, line 11, "nine o'clock" instead of "twelve o'clock" on p. 64, line 1, and "Long Islands" instead of "Long Island" on p. 101, lines 9/10. Octavo (6 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches; 171 x 121 mm.). viii, 311, [1, ads], [16, ads, dated and "5G.4.86" at bottom of first leaf and "5B.4.86" at bottom of fifth leaf] pp. Folding color frontispiece map. Full black crushed levant morocco, covers decorated with map design in gilt and blind, smooth spine lettered in gilt, red and black patterned liners and end-papers, all edges gilt. An exceptionally fine copy of the first edition, first issue of Stevenson's immortal and classic tale of the adventures of David Balfour in the year 1751. Kidnapped is an historical fiction adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, written as a "boys' novel" and first published in the magazine Young Folks from May to July 1886. A sequel, Catriona, was published in 1893. Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde might have caused a sensation, but it was Kidnapped that drew the attention of members of the Victorian intellectual elite and firmly established Stevenson as a major British literary figure. "The year of 1886 was truly Stevenson's annus mirabilis, for between January and May that year he wrote another masterpiece. Serialised in May in Young Folks and published in book form in July, Kidnapped was later hailed by Henry James-as the greatest of Louis's books… in Kidnapped for the first time he managed wholly successfully to dovetail high adventure with deep psychology" (McClynn, Robert Louis Stevenson, p. 266). Beinecke 378; Prideaux, pp. 46-48.

Arizona Champion Newspaper July 3, 1886

Flagstaff, Arizona. Very Good. 1886. Newspaper. A rare issue of the Arizona Champion newspaper with information on the infamous Aztec Land and Cattle Company, also known as the Hashknife Outfit. Chipped edges and one small hole in pages, some penciled content notes on top margins. Four full columns on the last page are paid advertisements of the company concerning the legal title of its land, over two million acres in Arizona. Aztec was known for its legions of murdering and robbing cowboys in eastern Arizona. Two other columns feature the illustrated brands and a reward proclamation for the Mogollon Live Stock Protective Association, with the brands of Aztec and many well-known early Flagstaff ranchers. A separate ad shows the brand of the Babbitt Brothers of Flagstaff, who later acquired much of Aztec's land when the company eventually collapsed and also used the Hashknife brand. The Arizona Champion was published in Flagstaff from 1884-1891, when it became the Coconino Sun. The paper recorded much on northern Arizona's early ranching industry. ; 23 1/2" x 17 1/4" .

        Observations Astronomiques

Dresde: Guillaume Baensch. 3 VOLUME SET, 4 handwritten pages in French notes of observations signed twice by author to J.L.E. Dreyer. Faites par B. d'Engelhardt dans son observatoire a` Dresde. Very good red quarter cloth over gray boards. Some wear, soiling, spine tears volume1, age-toned, Decorative bookplate of John Louis Emil Dreyer (February 13, 1852 - September 14, 1926) was a Danish-Irish astronomer. 4 tissue protected plates. pocket rear volume 3 with printed mathematics. VOLUME 1, 1886, 4to, 220pp. VOLUME 2, 4to, 272pp. VOLUME 3 1895, 4to,187pp. "Vasily Pavlovich Engelhardt (Russian: ??????? ???????? ???????????) (July 17, 1828, Kustovichi, Grodno Region, Russian Empire (now Belarus)) - May 6, 1915, Dresden) was a Russian astronomer and public figure. Engelhardt was member of the wealthy and famous Engelhardt family. He was graduated from the St. Petersburg School of Law in 1847, then served in the 1st and 5th departments of the Senate. In 1853 he left government service and devoted himself to studying astronomy. In 1875, Engelhardt settled in Dresden and built himself an observatory with his own money, where he worked alone without assistants until 1897. His main work was researching comets, asteroids, nebulae, and star clusters. In 1870 he completed the observation of 50 comets and 70 asteroids. Turning to star clusters, in 1883 he completed a catalog of more than 400 nebulae. Beginning in 1886, he observed 829 stars in Bradley's directory to determine if they had companion stars. In the late 1890s, deteriorating health forced Engelhardt to give up personal observing, and he gave all his equipment to Kazan University, of which his friend and fellow astronomer Dmitri Dubyago was rector. The university built an observatory to house the equipment, which was opened in 1901 and named for Engelhardt from 1903 until 1931. Until the end of his life, Engelhardt took an active part in the construction and organization of the new observatory, and in his will gave Kazan University all his money and property, to be used for the development and maintenance of the observatory. Engelhardt was awarded an honorary doctorate by Kazan University in 1889, and in 1890 he was made a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. By decision of the XIV Congress of the International Astronomical Union, the Moon crater Engel'gardt was named in Engelhardt's honor." wikipedia . Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 1886.

HMS Colossus - First Open-Hearth Steel Hull Battleship

Malta, 1886. Journal of 47 fine manuscript engineering drawings of British Battleship HMS Colossus (1882-1906) which was commissioned to the Mediterranean Fleet the same year, 42 of which are tinted in watercolour, all with detail caption, design annotations and measurements, and featuring improved design inventions being tested for the first time by the Royal Navy. Front pastedown signed and dated by the artist, Arthur R. Coward, 7 September 1886. Oblong 8vo. Brown paper over calf boards with working metal clasp. Volume measures approximately 25 x 18,5 cm. Together with one (1) additional drawing on waxed draft paper, also coloured and inscribed, measuring approximately 31 x 13 cm. A skillful work. The artist may be Arthur Charles Coward, O.N. 214376, attached to the Chatham Division, whose rank was Yeoman of Signals, and who "for services on the Mediterranean Station" received the Distinguished Service Medal in 1917. He may have been a midshipman on the vessel, and may also be a relation or a son of Lieutenant Blanchard K. J. Coward, who was associated with HMS Colossus in 1888, and is listed in the Royal Navy's 1888 Directory of Officers at the Malta Garrison as such. Further research is warranted to confirm. HMS Colossus (1882) exemplifies a pivotal change in shipbuilding, and monumental implementation of improved steelworks, at the dawn of the Second Industrial Revolution. A positively stellar showcasing of the Royal Navy's first battleship steel hull, thirty-six (36) diagrams illustrate the construction of the hull, including the deck. Segment by segment, each drawing with measurements, steel weight and important calculations, the core of HMS Colossus comes together in these pages. The "backbone of the ship," more technically termed the "Flat Plate Keel," is the first drawing in this volume. Forming the base of the ship's hull, the structural cornerstone of the vessel, the keel plate aids with strengthening and stability, with weight distribution during loading. Impeccable and highly detailed drawings taking us to the superstructure, show the construction of the hammock berthing quarters, its side scuttle (porthole), and some of its plating. Following this are illustrations of the ship's manhole systems, an rectangular watertight scuttle, the coaling scuttle, and a secure hinged door. With exacting precision he then draws an 8-inch non-return valve and a 12-inch screw down valve for the main drain, screw down non-return valve, critical for preventing back flooding. Evidently a work in progress, the last drawing is in pencil, non-coloured and begins to illustrate a ventilation valve. These drawings were made only weeks before HMS Colossus was sent on its first commission, making this an invaluable, singular, primary source view of a pioneering battleship. Colossus represented a number of firsts in British naval shipbuilding: •The use of open-hearth steel for the hull's construction •Compound protection rather than iron armor •A new design of breech loading main guns Colossus also represented the end of some design concepts, being among the last of the ships protected by an armoured citadel. In 1879, construction began on the Colossus and her sister ship Edinburgh, the first two steel-hulled British battleships, both of which were constructed of open-hearth steel, which had only been recently introduced. HMS Colossus took over seven years to complete. She was launched in 1882, running speed trials in January 1884 and gun trials in July 1885. She was commissioned at Portsmouth 13 April 1886 for Particular Service, in August 1866 joined the Channel fleet for tests, and detached for Special Duties in October. After being formally completed on 31 Oct 1886, she was sent to the Mediterranean in April 1887 where she remained for six and a half years. HMS Colossus was one of the first, if not the first, modern battleship. She had several features which would become standard for all gun warships, as late as the Second World War, including all steel construction, a main battery of breech loading major caliber guns 10 inches or greater mounted in turrets, and full propulsion by steam engines - instead of a combination of steam and sails as was common in the mid-19th century. In the mid-19th century, as the final stage in the evolution of fast commercial sailing ships, the technique of composite ship construction (wooden planking over a wrought iron frame) emerged. In 1856, British inventor Henry Bessemer (1813-1898) announced a new steel making process, patenting a process for cheaply and rapidly converting pig iron into steel, thus further accelerating the Industrial Revolution. Huge demand for steel rails for railroad construction sustained the industry through a depression that started in 1873, however Bessemer's early open-hearth steel was not of suitable quality for the Navy. Thus, from their Pembroke shipyard, Siemens-Martin began producing a stronger open-hearth steel for the Admiralty. This new shipbuilding material was first tested on the Navy's smaller vessels, specifically six of the Comus class steel corvettes, which were effectively small cruisers. The advantages being well proven, beginning in 1879 open-hearth steel hulls were made for the construction of HMS Colossus and HMS Edinburgh, the Royal Navy's first battleships with steel hulls. The Royal Navy's last composite built ship, the sloop Blonde, was launched in 1889, and the following year saw the final end of the use of wood for ship construction when the training brig Mayflower was launched. The advantage of steel over iron is greatly improved strength, open-hearth steel being 25 percent stronger than wrought iron. A ship's hull constructed of open-hearth steel weighed half of one of comparable dimension and tonnage built of wood. The artist is not to be confused with Arthur William Thomas Coward (1865-1948), the highly respected racing skipper of the sailing barge 'Hydrogen' from 1912 to 1932. 'Hydrogen' was a coast barge that carried tar and oil from the Thames and Medway to Scotland. In 1912, Arthur Coward was offered shares in the barge and became her skipper, a position he held for 20 years.

Nischeta filosofii. [i.e. French: "Misère de la Philosophie", i.e. English "The Poverty of Philosophy"].

Zheneva [Geneva], Osvobozhdenie truda, 1886. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. Wrappers with a few nicks. Spine lacking a bit of paper and book-block split in two. Internally fine and clean. XXXI,154, (6) pp. The exceedingly rare first Russian translation of Marx's early work, intended to clarify his own position regarding "the theory and tactics" of a truly "revolutionary proletarian movement", thereby laying the foundation for and anticipating many of the thoughts presented in his most famous work "The Communist Manifesto". The "Misère de la Philosophie" is "a pivotal work in Karl Marx's intellectual and political development." (Roberto, Karl Marx, Progress and World History). The 'Communist League', the political circle around Marx, regarded the present work as a key part of their programme, even after the publication of "The Communist Manifesto" in 1848. Marx himself "recommended The Poverty of Philosophy as an introduction to Capital". (Roberto, Karl Marx, Progress and World History)In order to get the manuscript past the government censors, Marx wrote the book as a commentary to Proudhon's 'What Is Property?', but essentially Marx here presented his theory on how to mobilize an entire class. Whereas the utopians believed that people must be persuaded one person at a time to join the socialist movement, the way a person must be persuaded to adopt any different belief, Marx knew that people would tend to act in accordance with their own economic interests. Thus, appealing to an entire class (the working class in this case) with a broad appeal to the material interests of that class, would be the best way to mobilise the broad mass of that class in order to create a revolution and change society.Proudhon emphasized the social relationships emerging from private property, and the tendency of economic development to produce a propertyless proletariat in ever increasing numbers, ideas which Marx found compelling. Marx's praise of Proudhon was not limitless, however, as he felt Proudhon did not fully understand the way in which wages and money were themselves forms of private property. The present Russian translation was published by 'Osvobozhdenie truda' (The Emancipation of Labour), the first Russian Marxist organization, led by Plekhanov. Engels was very fond of the group and wrote to Vera Zasulich, Menschevik, writer and revolutionary: "It will be a great day for Marx's daughters and me when the Russian version of Misère de la philosophie comes out. It goes without saying that it will be a pleasure to me to place at your disposal all the material that may be useful to you for that purpose."Osvobozhdenie truda was the first Russian Marxist group founded by Plekhanov in Geneva in 1883. The group did a great deal to translate Marxist works into Russian and distribute them, and later became the major adversary to the ideology of Narodism. Lenin later wrote that the group "laid the theoretical foundations for the Social-Democratic movement and took the first step towards the working-class movement in Russia." The group was later followed by the League of Struggle for the Emancipation of the Working Class."The Poverty of Philosophy is a pivotal text in modern European intellectual history." (Roberto, Karl Marx, Progress and World History).
