Guy de MaupassantSigned autograph letter and envelope addressed to the Countess Potocka: "And that, madame, is not of the pose, in prose. "Sl [Paris] sd [12 February 1886], 9.8x 15.5cm, 5 pages on 3 sheets.Funny and moving letter both literary and amorous.Maupassant, at Antibes on the occasion of a marriage, addressed an astonishing letter to the Countess Potocka. She is at the same time her friend and a woman whom he courtiers by taste or worldliness. For her part, she quickly incorporated him into his group of "Maccabees," a circle of suitors over whom she reigned as an absolute mistress. He grew up with Potocka for his kindness towards a new one recently published, Mademoiselle Perle : "I have been a long time, Madame, without writing to you because you have revolted me - literally - by congratulating me on Mademoiselle Perle , I am sure. He feels perfectly entitled to criticize his work: " I have the right to be severe given the author's name ..."He suspects the Countess's male entourage to influence his judgment: " Certainly you have been influenced by the considerable and incompetent men whom you honor with your confidence for having thus appreciated this news worthy of a Mointhyon prize (I do not even know Not how one writes Montyon) as much by the form as the bottom. Maupassant resumed his previous procedure: he was at a distance from a group of which he was a part. It is also the salons of the Countess, it does not differ in any way from the " considerable men " whom he cites. The Montyon prize, which he claims he can not spell, is a literary reward for works "most useful to manners".He confesses, however, a few lines later: " I wanted to prove that everyone confuses literature with Virtue - whereas they have nothing in common. "A business that can be called moral. But Maupassant's morality yielded to the writing: " Well, after this disloyal essay I opt for literature . "Mademoiselle Perle was published barely a month earlier, on January 16, 1886 in Le Figaro . In spite of everything, he launched himself into a lapidary and funny criticism of his text, without failing to scratch his correspondent on the passage: " How could you judge with sympathy the story as banal as unlikely of this family of imbeciles living Behind the Observatory as at the bottom of the province - (Like it's new ) [...] Oh! Oh ! Oh ! Ah! Ah! Ah! What an ingenious fable! And the revelation takes place in a charming way, about a cake of kings! One weeps in a chalk, which is a comic on, and the other grateful, falls to the ground like a scarf, which is of a certain effect! He seems to find no grace in his work, in spite of his success: " Certainly the invention of this fabliau at Berquin is of a certain platitude, the observation of a perfect inaccuracy, the development of a tender naivete which Has touched everybody. For I have received many letters. "What mattered success, for according to Maupassant, the danger is quite different: " I say that in writing such virtuous sweets without finds of any kind, without an artist's composition and even without a feathered address one arrives perhaps ... 'academy. But that's all, and not enough. He apologizes for the difficulty: " This is how I am cranky in my solitude where life is not gay. I work ; I work a lot ; My eyes ache, my stomach ache, my back pain; And my heart beats day and night. He reproaches his correspondent for the ways in which she uses him, as well as with his other followers of the group of "Maccabees." He thinks "... very often, with a certain sadness to a woman of whom I would really like to be, sincerely the friend, but whose kindness towards me is so variable that the friendship with her has a dancer's balance on The tightrope. "But he avenged himself a few lines later, evoking his visits to his friends Marie Kann and Mme Legrand (Marie-Clothilde Legrand, Countess of Fournès) and then his friend the painter Henri Gervex: " that Mme Legrand wears Duke Duke of Prince In Prince, is becoming, with the aid of his hostess who thinks him delighted, a regicide communard, although he has been made to pass in this world for a practicing Catholic. Finally, after his some humorous features, he resumes his somber attitude, markedly aggravated during his last years, which he still has to live: " I do not go out, only in black and I am so bored, at the sole thought of everything What I could do to amuse myself, that I have not even the courage to move.

England: The Academy: May 29, 1886. 19th Century sepia photograph artistically mounted on a board with Pfeiffer's poem, of the same title. Contemporary manuscript inscription, possibly in the hand of the poet or artist: "In memory of Ralph Waldo Emerson." Deaccessioned by the Bancroft Library, Berkeley, CA to Peter Howard of Serendipity Books. Hope is a Symbolist oil painting by the English painter George Frederic Watts, the first two versions of which were completed in 1886. he picture is one of a series of allegorical subjects which Watts intended for a decorative scheme known as the 'House of Life'. Traditionally the figure of Hope is identified by an anchor, but Watts was seeking a fresher, more original approach. He painted blind Hope seated on a globe and playing on a lyre which has all its strings broken except one. She bends her head to listen to the faint music, but her efforts appear forlorn; the overall atmosphere is one of sadness and desolation rather than hope. The picture's sense of melancholy is enhanced by the soft brushwork and the translucent mists that envelop the floating globe.

Traces de scotch aux gardes du tome I. SECONDE ÉDITION, complète en trois tomes [Second edition, complete in three volumes. Text in chinese and english]. NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.         Anna Karenina.

New York: Thomas J. Crowell & Co., 1886. First edition in English of this novel that is widely regarded as a pinnacle in realist fiction, which Tolstoy considered his first true novel. Octavo, original brown cloth, with gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel, floral endpapers, with four pages of ads at the rear. In near fine condition, with a small contemporary name to the half-title page. Translated by Nathan Haskell Dole. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Rare and desirable. First issued serially in 1873; first published in book form in Moscow in 1878. Vladimir Nabokov called Anna Karenina "one of the greatest love stories in world literature." Matthew Arnold claimed it was not so much a work of art as "a piece of life." Set in imperial Russia, Anna Karenina is a rich and complex meditation on passionate love and disastrous infidelity. William Faulkner, described the novel as "the best ever written." It remains popular, as demonstrated by a 2007 Time poll of 125 contemporary authors in which Anna Karenina was voted the "greatest book ever written." Adapted to film numerous times, most recently in 2012 Joe Wright directed picture, based on the Tom Stoppard screenplay, starring Keira Knightley.

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1886 - First Edition of Jekyll and Hyde Bound by Rivière & SonSTEVENSON, Robert Louis. Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1886. First English edition. Small octavo (7 x 4 5/8 inches; 179 x 117 mm.). [8], 141, [1, blank] pp. Bound ca. 1925 by Rivière & Son (stamp-signed in black on verso of front free-endpaper). Full tan calf, covers decoratively bordered in gilt, spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments. Olive green morocco spine label lettered in gilt, decorative gilt board-edges and turn-ins, marbled end-papers, top edge gilt. A near fine copy.Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a novella by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) first published in 1886. It is about a London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde. The novella's impact is such that it has become a part of the language, with the very phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" coming to mean a person who is vastly different in moral character from one situation to the next."Until 1886 [Stevenson] had never earned much. by his pen. But in that year came two successes which greatly increased his reputation, and with it his power to earn. These were The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Kidnapped. The former, founded partly on a dream, is a striking apologue of the double life of man. Published as a 'shilling shocker,' a form at that time in fashion, it became instantly popular; was quoted from a thousand pulpits; was translated into German, French, and Danish; and the names of its two chief characters have passed into the common stock of proverbial allusion" (DNB). "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde may be read for its style alone. Many critics have objected to its brevity. but Henry James called the book 'a masterpiece of concision'. If Dracula leaves one with the sensation of having been struck down by a massive, 400-page wall of horror, then Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is like the sudden, mortal jab of an ice pick" (Stephen King). Due to the delay in placing the book in bookstores in England, its release was preceded by the first American edition by four days.Beinecke 349. Prideaux 17. [Attributes: First Edition]

"In 1884, from his observations of plants, Strasburger independently conclued (...) that the nucleu was responsible for heredity, and that it contained within the filaments the substance that was divised in halves between the daughter cells and bore the characters of the parents and earlier ancestor" (DSB).         De vogelwereld. Handboek voor liefhebbers van kamer- en parkvogels. Met driehonderd afbeeldingen in chromolithographie.

Groningen, J. B. Wolters, 1886. Folio (36.8 x 27.3 cm). Two title pages, 274 [xvi, 156; (ii), 100] pp; 48 [26; 22] large, chromolithographed plates. Publisher's decorative full cloth with gilt and black embossing on the front board, gilt title on the front board and spine. Bevelled edges. Yellow endpapers.= Perhaps the most sumptuous of the late-19th-century Dutch bird books, with fine illustrations in full colour by J. Bungartz, G. Lübbert and C. t' Felt. The first part deals with wild birds, including parrots, etc., the second with poultry and other domesticated birds. The plates are very beautiful and therefore a complete copy, such as this one, has become very rare. Nissen errs in listing 27 plates for the first part; plate numbering jumps from 20 (the last of the exotic birds) to 22 (the start of the indigenous birds). Boards a bit soiled, edges, in particular spine ends, rubbed. Some light spotting throughout, thumbing in the lower margins, otherwise a very good copy. Nissen IVB, 686.

Postcards of paintings by Genichiro Inokuma acquired by Albert Tucker in Japan, 1947

Five postcards, including three real photo and two colour printed, average size 140 x 90 mm, of paintings by the Japanese artist Genichiro Inokuma, each with an inscription in pencil verso naming both the subject and the artist; [together with] four postcards of paintings by the Japanese artist Tsuguharu Foujita (1886-1968), 140 x 90 mm, each inscribed by Australian artist Albert Tucker in pen, 'Foujita'; the nine postcards are in overall good condition (one a little creased) and are accompanied by their original plain envelope (mild foxing, edge tears). Provenance: Estate of Albert Tucker. These postcards were acquired by Albert Tucker on a visit to Japan in 1947, during which the Australian war artist met one his counterparts, Genichiro Inokuma, a Japanese war artist. 'Artists have traditionally exchanged works of art, including portraits, with each other, both as a mark of respect for each other's work and as tokens of their friendship. In 1947 Albert Tucker travelled to Japan as a war correspondent accredited to the British Commonwealth Occupation Force where he met several former Japanese war artists. Tucker made portraits of these artists, and in the case of Inokuma Genichiro made two similar drawings, one to present, and one to keep for himself. At least one of these artists, Sanda Yasushi, made a portrait of Tucker as a gift. This friendship exchange of portraits is particularly significant as it was made only two years after the end of the war, after the atom bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the revelations in Australia of the Japanese treatment of Allied prisoners of war.'
