Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde [Signed]

Longmans, Green, and Co., London 1886 - A Very Good copy of the scarce second edition in the Publisher's original buff wrappers printed in red and blue, and with the front wrapper also decorated in blue, SIGNED BY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON on the title page (the end portions of the delicate spine have perished but most of the spine -- on which a prior owner has penned the book's title -- remains in place and the chipped wrappers remain delicately attached, tape remnants to the spine side of each wrapper, stitching still holding the page block together with the pages mildly age toned at the edges, small stain to the upper margin of each page as well as some discoloration at the half-title's lower right corner -- continuing in a rapidly diminishing amount for the first few pages, but otherwise the pages are rather clean with the very occasional spot), complete with the half-title and title, advertisements to the inner side of each wrapper. This scarce second edition of the wrappered issue which, like the first edition, carries the Publisher's ink correction to the date -- from "1885" to "1886" -- on the front wrapper. The novel originally had been scheduled for publication in December, 1885 but the book stalls were so full of Christmas numbers and other recent publications that publication was delayed until 1886. The book was quite a success and this second edition was published shortly after the first edition reached the book shops. (A prior owner's light pencil note to title page's upper margin reads "July Ed. / 1886".) A remarkable novel, of which Stevenson's fellow author and stepson Lloyd Osbourne stated: "I don't believe that there was ever such a literary feat before as the writing of Dr Jekyll. I remember the first disease of the world though it were yesterday. Louis came downstairs in a fever; read nearly half the book aloud; and then, while we were still gasping, he was away again, and busy writing. I doubt if the first draft took so long as three days." One of the great books of its, or any, era, which remains in print even today, which gave the English language the term "Jekyll and Hyde", of which well over 100 film versions have been made, and which in all probability will remain one of Stevenson's most known and most notable works. This is the only copy of the book signed by Stevenson we ever have seen in any edition. An altogether Very Good copy of the scarce second edition of this quite important Stevenson work, SIGNED BY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON. RARE INDEED. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co, 1886. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co, 1886. First American edition. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first translation into English. The book is a bit cocked and the cloth is worn at the lower spine end. The original owner wrote his/her name on the title page (dated 1886) and also on the rear paste-down. Thinning to the lower margin of the title page where it looks like someone erased a stamp from the verso. Presumed first issue of the book without any other titles by the same author listed, publisher's monogram on the title and with five pages of ads in the rear, starting with "Crowell's Red Line Poets," and no translations of any Russian books listed. (Biblioctopus Catalogue #49). & & The author's classic novel, portraying a fallen woman. One of the most conflicted characters ever written, nowhere does an author love then despise his heroine so passionately. Translated by Nathan Haskell Dole. A book with no clear consensus on bibliographical points, but our research indicates that this copy is right, or at least no more convincing argument has yet been offered. Very Good.

He was one of the first to recognize that the heartbeat originates in the individual cells of heart muscle. His presented this copy of his paper to Carl Ludwig, the first professor of physiology at the University of Leipzig and founder of the physiological institute that now bears his name. His was working in Ludwig’s laboratory at the time he made his discovery of the bundle of His. This copy was later owned by neuroanatomist Lewis H. The publicity from the trial ensured that on publication the book became a bestseller.       nbsp;London -George Bell & Sons, 1886. nbsp;London -George Bell & Sons, 1886 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Dibdin claimed that his first popular sea song, Blow High, Blow Low, was composed during the stormy thirteen-hour channel crossing; it was featured in his opera The SeraglioAdmiralty edition, featuring a subscribers list and dedication to the Earl of Minto. Dibdin featured in many operas including the role of Ralph in Isaac Bickerstaff's The Maid of the Mill and his performance, beginning on 31 January 1765, was one of the great successes of the decade; every song was encored, and he even set a fashion for Ralph-handkerchiefs. The opera ran for more than fifty performances. [DNB]Condition: In a decorative cloth binding. Externally, age toning to the spine, shelf wear and bumping. Hinges are starting slightly. Internally, generally firmly bound. There aremarks to pastedowns with a copperplate inscription to the front pastedown dated 1961. There is also spotting to the first few pages but otherwise bright and clean. Overall: GOOD.

New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., [1886]. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., [1886]. viii, 5-773 pages, plus [5] pages publisher's ads; title page is a cancel. Original brown cloth, stamped in gold with the Romanov arms on the front cover; floral endpapers. [19.8 cm.] Good plus. Cloth faded and with some light soiling; wear to spine ends with slight fraying at tail and slight loss to publisher's name; volume a bit cocked; but a sound copy with the hinges fully intact. Occasional traces of foxing and a few instances of marginal soiling. Bookplate of Louisa Porter Gilmer Minis (1852-1921) on the front pastedown, her signature at the head of the title page, dated 1886, and her signature in the margin of two other pages. [A native of Savannah, she was the daughter of Jeremy Francis Gilmer (1818-1883), a major general and the chief of engineers of the Confederate States Army, and the wife of Jacob Florance Minis (1852-1936). She was active in various charitable causes including the Telfair Hospital and the Louisa Porter Home. Her husband, a descendant of one of the first families in Savannah and one of the oldest Jewish families in the South, was a prominent shipbroker and merchant.] FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Possible first issue. Bound without the list of the author's other books, which is found in many copies before the title page and which is often used to assigned priority (issues with three books on the list are presumed to be earliest, followed by those with six titles). Bound with a five-page publisher's catalog at the rear advertising books published in 1885 or earlier, with no Russian authors included, in contrast to issues with the list, which are found with four pages of ads, mostly for Russian works first published by Crowell in 1886. While not conclusive proof, this suggests that the present issue may have priority over those others. Furthermore, the date of the original owner's inscription on the title page removes any doubt that it might have been issued after 1886. Line 39.

æ ¡æ§˜é››å½¢é›£æ ¢ã®æ¢ [Moyo Hinagata Naniwa No Ume].

      - [Tokyo or Osaka 1886?]. Small quarto by size (245x185mm) publisher's decorated wrapper (not a printed title slip; spine backed with Japanese paper some time ago); colour woodblock title, three pages of text, two colour woodblocks of kimonoed women and children, 60 colour woodblocks of kimono designs, one with added embossing, on double pages in the older reverse form: folded in the gutter and pasted together at the outside edge. I'd say that this is the first of three volumes but it it isn't quite. The copy of Moyo Hinagata Naniwa No Ume in three volumes that I've found is clearly labelled first, middle and last on each wrapper title, does not have the three introductory pages of text that are in this, and the last four plates in this are the first four in the second volume. To complicate this more Yamanaka published a remarkably similar kimono pattern book in Osaka the same year with title that indicates it is the latest designs from the city. The peculiarities of the binding could lead to a long and inconclusive discussion of issues, regional distribution, remainders and mistakes; perhaps these things were put out in forms to fit every pocket and taste.

        The Vicar of Wakefield

London - John C Nimmo, 1886. London - John C Nimmo, 1886 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A smartly bound and beautifully illustrated copy of Goldsmith's classic, The Vicar of Wakefield. With prefatory memoir by George Saintsbury. Illustrated with over one hundred and forty colour illustrations. In literary history books the Vicar of Wakefield is often described as a sentimental novel, which displays the belief in the innate goodness of human beings. But it can also be read as a satire on the sentimental novel and its values, as the vicar's values are apparently not compatible with the real sinful world. It is only with Sir William Thornhill's help that he can get out of his calamities. Armorial bookplate of Manuel M. Terrero to front pastedown. Condition: Rebound in morocco with gilt detailing. Externally, very smart, with just some slight rubbing. Internally, generally firmly bound although slightly strained in places. Scattered institutional ink stamps throughout. Pages are bright, though with the occasional patch of foxing and handling mark. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

        Histoire de la Guerre

, 1886. 1886 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A copy of 'Histoire de la Guerre' written by Jean, Amde le Faure, Member of Parliament from 1879 to 1881 (October 1838 - November 1881), Faure became relatively well known for his various works of political history: Reconstitution of Hungary (1859), Socialism during the French Revolution (1863) and more. He studied especially military matters, went to France in 1870 and he sent back a correspondence on the events of the war of 1870-71. Then he published: Commentary on the Code of Military Justice (1873), in collaboration with M. Without abandoning journalism, later on he was for secretary-editor of the Chamber of Deputies. The Franco-Prussian War, which lasted from 19 July 1870 to 29 January 1871 , sometimes called the Franco-Prussian War, opposed the Second Empire French in the Kingdom of Prussia and its allies (German). The conflict marked the culmination of the tension between the two powers, resulting from the Prussian desire to dominate the whole of Germany , who was then a patchwork of independent states. The defeat led to the fall of the French Empire and the loss for the French territory of Alsace-Lorraine . Includesone-hundred and tenportrait illustrations andthirty twomaps and charts within the text. In French. Condition: In half morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places with some shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound, age toned and clean with just some light scattered spotting to the first and last pages.       1886 - London - Richard Bentley and Son., 1884. 1886 - London - Richard Bentley and Son., 1884 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Temple Bar was a literary periodical of the mid and late 19th and very early 20th centuries (1860-1906). The complete title was Temple Bar- A London Magazine for Town and Country Readers. it was initially edited by George Augustus Sala, and Arthur Ransome was the final editor before it folded, while he developed his literary career. It was also edited by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. In five volumes. A rather congratulary review of the arrival of the impending publication appeared in the New York Times in October 1860 saying that it promised The name is a happy one; pregnant with good things and seasoned with the promise of Attic salt. It sold for about one shilling, and was one of the leading literary magazines of the era. 553 issues were published, up to 1906, about one a month. It published work by writers such as Jane Austen, Wilkie Collins, Charles Reade, Robert Louis Stevenson, Anthony Trollope, Arthur Conan Doyle and E. F. Benson.
