Anna Karenina - (Likely First Issue)

Thomas Y Crowell and Co, 1886. First Edition, Likely First Issu. Hardcover. Very Good. New York: Thomas Crowell, 1886. viii, 5-773, (i), 5 pages of adverts. Brown cloth with gilt stamping, original floral end papers. First Edition in English language, First Printing. Likely First Issue. Precedes all other English translations. While no established priority exists for this title, the general consensus is that the other Tolstoy titles listed opposite the title page are points of issue. The fewer titles listed, the earlier the issue is believed to be. The earliest other examples we've been able to locate have only three titles listed opposite the title page. Of these three titles, My Religion is listed priced at $1.00, which an October 1886 issue of Publisher's Weekly states that Crowell had just reduced the price to that amount. This statement dates the copy with three titles to the later part of 1886. Slightly more common than this example, are those with six titles listed, some of which were published in 1887. As for the color of the cloth, there is no established priority. Crowell issued it in dark brown, blue and green, but it is interesting to note that the copy with only three titles is also in brown cloth. The five pages of ads at the rear of this volume are quite interesting as well. Apparently, later issues had four pages of ads initially, and then subsequent issues and printings had varying page counts. This copy is in about Very Good condition, with original end papers unrestored and apparently unaltered. Chipping to the head and tail of spine, bumped corners, light edge wear and scratching and rubbing to covers. Light wear to side of page block. Front hinge is a bit tender. Name of previous owner barely noticeable on front free end paper, but also penned on first blank page. Light evidence of erased pencil also on first blank page. Pages lightly age tones, but in general bright and no foxing. In general a very nice copy. Extremely rare.

War and Peace (Six Volume Set)

GOTTSBERGER, 1886-01-01. Paperback. Acceptable. FIRST US EDITION, WRAPPERED ISSUE. New York: William S. Gottsberger, 1886. Three volumes in six. (First set: Before Tilsit) 322 pp. [1 ad]; 357 pp; (Second set: The Invasion) 321 pp.; 270pp. [9]; (Third set: Borodino) 290 pp. [4], 391 pp. [6]. First American Edition, first printing with dated title page and the publisher's imprint on all copyright pages. Wrappered (paperback) issue. This issue is mentioned in Bowker's The Annual American Catalogue of 1886, pg. 176. Follows a British edition by Vizetelly which omitted certain passages. Translated from the French edition by Clara Bell.Condition: Poor condition. All six volumes are present with complete text blocks but all of the spines and some of the end papers (including some ads) and wraps are missing. Given the extremely fragile nature of these volumes, this is not too surprising. A previous owner numbered the volumes on their first remaining page in pencil. Text blocks are actually clean and in not in too bad of shape. Bindings often loose at ends. Volumes one and four are missing their wraps entirely. Volume two has a back cover. Volume six has front cover, creased and torn Volume two has a front cover. Volume three has both front and back covers and a bit of its spine. An exceptionally scarce first wrappered issue of the first complete English-language translation of Tolstoy's masterpiece. They are largely identical to the hardcover issue, as far as we can tell, but with different bindings; originally they retailed separately for 50 cents each. We have not yet been able to find any evidence of any other surviving sets of this issue, institutionally or for sale. We have opted to leave the volumes completely unrestored and partially disbound, as we purchased them, leaving rebinding options up to the buyer.

London: George Bell, 1886. Octavo; some notes in pencil throughout, but a very good uncut copy in original red cloth, gilt device on upper board. Author's signed presentation copy. Like so many of his contemporaries, Woolner was lured to the Australian goldfields in the hope of securing a fortune. After six months without success he settled briefly in Melbourne where he won a number of commissions including a medallion of Governor Latrobe, and in Sydney a portrait of Sir Charles Fitzroy, and Charles Wentworth. In 1879, during the height of his successful career, he was commissioned to sculpt the statue of Captain Cook which stands in Hyde Park, Sydney. Woolner, famous as both a poet and sculptor, once said 'Poetry is not my proper work in this world; I must sculpture it, not write it'.

Album of watercolours and pencil drawings from the voyage of HMS Myrmidon to Australia and South-East Asia

1886-, 1888. Oblong quarto artist's sketchbook (18.5 x 25.5 cm.), 32 leaves in total with 25 watercolours (one double-page) and 13 pencil drawings, most of the sketches captioned, pencil map on exercise book page loosely inserted; in the original binding of quarter sheep over worn pebble-grained boards, rather stained and worn, but generally sound and very good. Original watercolours and sketches. A charming and accomplished album of amateur watercolours and pencil sketches made by a sailor on board HMS Myrmidon, en route from England to the Australia Station via the Middle East in 1886-1888. HMS Myrmidon was launched in 1867 as a specially-designed survey vessel. In 1884, while serving in the Red Sea, the vessel was involved in fighting in the Mahdist War (sometimes known as the Anglo-Sudan War), and several of the watercolours in this album dramatically depict the fighting. In 1885 Myrmidon was appointed to the Australia Station to undertake hydrographic studies of the coasts of Timor, northern Australia, along the Great Barrier Reef and in the Coral Sea, and also in Bass Strait. Hoskyn Islands in the southern Great Barrier Reef were named after the ship's Commander, Admiralty Hydrographer Richard Frazer Hoskyn (d. 1892). Myrmidon was sold in Hong Kong in 1889. Several of the Spinks views are dramatic renderings of events in the Middle East, notably two watercolours illustrating night attacks in Suakin and another showing the arrival of sailors and a machine gun to protect the town (the Mahdi's revolt in 1885 resulted in the siege which led to the death of General Gordon). There is also a stunning double-page view of the British assault on Alexandria on 11 July 1882. The bulk of the album is a chronological catalogue of ports visited and ships encountered while sailing to and working on the Australia Station, making it a fascinating document of life on board a survey vessel in south-east Asia and Australia. The illustrations notably include scenes of Batavia, Timor, Darwin, Townsville, Sydney and Melbourne. A particularly striking scene shows the collision between Myrmidon and HMS Tyne on 25 April 1887 off Wilson's Promontory. We know slightly more than we might otherwise about Spinks because he was listed as a deserter in the New South Wales Police Gazette (24 March 1886), with the following description: "SPINKS, Walter. HMS Myrmidon. Deserter, at Melbourne, on the 10th instant. Painter, 2nd class, two badges, 30yrs, 5'5½", fair complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes." On the Myrmidon in Australia see a rather good article and accompanying illustration in the Illustrated Sydney News for 21 November 1885. Three men were lost in a nasty accident in July 1886 when they became entangled in the anchor ropes and were drowned. The views are as follows: Sheerness, watercolour; Bay of Biscay, watercolour; "Giberalter", watercolour; Malta, watercolour; Alexandria, watercolour; Port Said, watercolour; Suez, watercolour; Deadless Lighthouse, watercolour; Saukim [in harbour with four other named ships], watercolour; Sailors landing in Saukim with machine gun to protect the Town, pencil; Night attack, watercolour; [Sketch of shield & spears], verso of preceding, pencil; [Untitled: night time attack] black ink, watercolour wash Massowah, watercolour; Fight with a Slaver, verso of preceding, pencil; Aden, watercolour; Colombo, watercolour; Singapore, watercolour; Batavia, watercolour; Sourabaya, watercolour; Flores Passage, watercolour; Wetta, watercolour; Timor, watercolour; [Untitled: horse & rider surrounded by locals, apparently Australian Aborigines, with weapons], pencil; Port Darwin, watercolour; Townsville, watercolour; HMS Rapid, pencil; Farm Cove, Sydney, watercolour; HMS Iris, pencil; Oberon Bay, pencil; Port Melbourne, pencil; Franklin Island, pencil; Day Dreams [portrait of woman with floral border, Spinks' wife or girlfriend?], watercolour; HMS Myrmidon & Tyne in collision off Wilsons Promontory April 25 1887, pencil; HMS Myrmidon, pencil; [Untitled: Myrmidon in rough seas], pencil; The Bombardment of Alexandria by the British Fleet, July 11 1882 [double-page], watercolour; Her Majesty the Queen, watercolour; World map on loose leaf, pencil.

O Le Tala I Tino O Tagata Ma Mea Ola Eseese ? A Manual of Zoology? in the Samoan Dialect

Unwin Brothers, Chilworth and London 1886 - Octavo, illustrated, presentation note to Jason Spicer tipped in, bookplate of Edward Unwin; a very good copy in the original decorated boards. Samoan zoology. First edition: an uncommon and impressively detailed account of zoology entirely in the "Samoan Dialect". This was a presentation copy from the author, with his note tipped in 'Presented to Jas. Spicer Esq. With grateful acknowledgements of kind sympathy and generous aid Thos. Powell.' Thomas Powell worked for the London Missionary Society in the South Seas, and published several books on Samoan themes. His charming Manual of Zoology, printed almost entirely "in the Samoan dialect", covers the gamut of the animal kingdom, from protozoa such as the amoeba ("amipa"), via the invertebrates, to birds and animals. Powell no doubt faced challenges in finding Samoan terms for many of the creatures described - few Samoans at the time of publication can have seen a St. Bernard dog ("maile a perenata paia") or a rhinoceros ("isu-nifoa aferika"), let alone a duck-billed platypus ("gutu-pato"). This copy belonged to Edward Unwin, one of the Unwin Brothers who printed the book, and had previously been presented to the printer James Spicer by the author, to whom the Unwins were related by marriage. Each volume comprises John Leech's humorous illustrations, with captions, from the collection of Mr. Punch, 1842-1864. John Leech(18171864), humorous artist and illustrator . . . became aregular contributor [to Punch] from the end of 1842. In July 1843 he began a series of Cartoons, full-page subjects satirising the Westminster Hall murals. The name stuck and so Leech effectively gave to the English language the meaning of cartoon as a large satirical print. For the next twenty years he produced hundreds of brilliant and incisive sporting and domestic illustrations for the weekly magazine. They were collected together as Pictures of Life and Character (185469) and reissued again in the 1880s (DNB). Complete in three volumes. Condition: In decorative red cloth bindings with gilt detailing. Externally smart, though with some marks to the boards and some light bumping to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and mainly clean, though with the odd spot and some staining to the first few pages of volume III. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

        One Thing Needful

London - John and Robert Maxwell, 1886. London - John and Robert Maxwell, 1886 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of this extremely scarce Victorian novel. Mary Elizabeth Braddon (4 October 1835 4 February 1915) was a British Victorian era popular novelist. She is best known for her 1862 sensation novel Lady Audley's Secret. During the four years following Lady Audley's Secret Braddon defied her critics by publishing eight novels, often writing several novels for serialization at once; as she remarked to Bulwer-Lytton, I have never written a line that has not been written against time (Wolff, Sensational Victorian, 134). Although accused of beginning the reign of bigamy as an interesting and fashionable crime and inventing the fair haired demon of modern fiction (Oliphant, Novels, 263), after Aurora Floyd she turned to more decorous drawing-room fiction. Eleanor's Victory (1863), The Doctor's Wife (1864), and The Lady's Mile (1866) were gentler society novels. In 1866 Maxwell founded the Belgravia Magazine, a fiction journal which would be edited by Braddon for ten years and carried serials of many of her novels. Later that year her third child died, but she continued to write through a period of depression, publishing her twentieth novel by 1868. (DNB)Complete in three volumes. Condition: Rebacked in cloth with the original boards and backstrip. Externally sound, though with some wear to the original leather. Three hinges strained, with one hinge tender and held by the cords only. Internally, binding tender. Pages are bright, though with some scatteredspotting to the endpapers. Overall: GOOD ONLY..

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde [Signed]

Longmans, Green, and Co., London 1886 - A Very Good copy of the scarce second edition in the Publisher's original buff wrappers printed in red and blue, and with the front wrapper also decorated in blue, SIGNED BY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON on the title page (the end portions of the delicate spine have perished but most of the spine -- on which a prior owner has penned the book's title -- remains in place and the chipped wrappers remain delicately attached, tape remnants to the spine side of each wrapper, stitching still holding the page block together with the pages mildly age toned at the edges, small stain to the upper margin of each page as well as some discoloration at the half-title's lower right corner -- continuing in a rapidly diminishing amount for the first few pages, but otherwise the pages are rather clean with the very occasional spot), complete with the half-title and title, advertisements to the inner side of each wrapper. This scarce second edition of the wrappered issue which, like the first edition, carries the Publisher's ink correction to the date -- from "1885" to "1886" -- on the front wrapper. The novel originally had been scheduled for publication in December, 1885 but the book stalls were so full of Christmas numbers and other recent publications that publication was delayed until 1886. The book was quite a success and this second edition was published shortly after the first edition reached the book shops. (A prior owner's light pencil note to title page's upper margin reads "July Ed. / 1886".) A remarkable novel, of which Stevenson's fellow author and stepson Lloyd Osbourne stated: "I don't believe that there was ever such a literary feat before as the writing of Dr Jekyll. I remember the first disease of the world though it were yesterday. Louis came downstairs in a fever; read nearly half the book aloud; and then, while we were still gasping, he was away again, and busy writing. I doubt if the first draft took so long as three days." One of the great books of its, or any, era, which remains in print even today, which gave the English language the term "Jekyll and Hyde", of which well over 100 film versions have been made, and which in all probability will remain one of Stevenson's most known and most notable works. This is the only copy of the book signed by Stevenson we ever have seen in any edition. An altogether Very Good copy of the scarce second edition of this quite important Stevenson work, SIGNED BY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON. RARE INDEED. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co, 1886. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co, 1886. First American edition. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first translation into English. The book is a bit cocked and the cloth is worn at the lower spine end. The original owner wrote his/her name on the title page (dated 1886) and also on the rear paste-down. Thinning to the lower margin of the title page where it looks like someone erased a stamp from the verso. Presumed first issue of the book without any other titles by the same author listed, publisher's monogram on the title and with five pages of ads in the rear, starting with "Crowell's Red Line Poets," and no translations of any Russian books listed. (Biblioctopus Catalogue #49). & & The author's classic novel, portraying a fallen woman. One of the most conflicted characters ever written, nowhere does an author love then despise his heroine so passionately. Translated by Nathan Haskell Dole. A book with no clear consensus on bibliographical points, but our research indicates that this copy is right, or at least no more convincing argument has yet been offered. Very Good.
