Government Printing Office, 1886., 1886. First edition. 8vo. Senate Executive Document No. 143, 49th Congress, 1st Session, May 17, 1886. Hardcover binder with titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover, 20 pp., 5 folding maps at the rear. An uncertainty exists as to the location of the frontier line between Alaska and British Columbia, as defined by the treaty of cession with Russia of March 30, 1867. Due to the importance of the subject, the president requests that a provision be made by law for a preliminary survey of the boundary line in question by the U. S., in order that the information necessary for the basis of a treaty between the U. S. and Great Britain may be obtained. A sum of $100,000 is appropriated for the expenses of making the survey. The four maps are: MAP 1: 30" x 37" color map of Alaska and adjoining Territory which includes Eastern Siberia and the Aleutian Islands; MAP 2: 24"x 19" black and white chart showing part of the coast of N. W. America; MAP 3: 11" x 7" tinted map of the Portland Canal and the Observatory Inlet; and MAP 4: is a 22" x 23" black and white map of Revilla Gigedo Channel in south east Alaska. All four maps are in fine, unused condition. A fine copy.

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Authorized Edition.

New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1886 - True First Edition of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" in the Scarce Original Wrappers STEVENSON, Robert Louis. Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Authorized Edition. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886. First edition. (This American edition preceded the English edition by four days, but used the Longmans sheets). Small octavo. [8], 138, [2, blank], [14, advertisements] pp. Original printed yellow wrappers, just slightly skewed. Spine repaired, with about a quarter inch of loss to the bottom. A nice copy of a book that usually shows up in poor condition. Housed in a black cloth clamshell case with black morocco labels lettered in gilt on spine. This "Authorized" American edition was published on 5 January 1886—four days before the London edition (Longmans had intended to publish in December 1885, but delayed publication until January, as it feared the book would be lost in the Christmas rush). Even though Scribner’s issued 3,000 copies in wrappers and 1,250 copies in cloth, the copy in wrappers is much scarcer since it's more fragile and most likely not saved. The story of how Stevenson came to write this classic tale is by now well known: He was one night in the middle of a nightmare when Fanny, alarmed by his disturbance, woke him. Louis complained with irritation that she had interrupted a ‘fine bogy tale.’ Seizing his pen the following day he began to write down the story he had dreamed. Initially it was the Gothic horror of the story that excited him, and he produced a first draft at great speed, reading the story triumphantly to Fanny when he finished. But Fanny wasn’t happy with the story. She felt that it could be more than a Poe-like crawler, that it could be more morally pointed than Louis had fashioned it. Certainly in this case it can only be said that her comments did the story and Louis considerable good. Angrily the first draft was cast into the fire and he started again, this time producing the version of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde that we know (Calder). Beinecke 346. Prideaux, 17, p. 45. HBS 67112. $7,500 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1886 First edition, first issue, with the publication date on the front wrapper corrected in blue ink as called for, with 1 leaf of publisher's advertisement at the rear of the text. Publisher's light beige paper wrappers, lettered in red and blue, front panel decorated in blue. Very good, with some wear and short tears to the extremities, light soiling and rubbing to the otherwise fresh wrappers, minor nicks to the fore edge of the front wrapper, some creasing and chipping to the spine, a few minor archival repairs to the spine, former owner Thomas B. Lockwood's black leather bookplate to the half-title, otherwise bright and fresh pages. A clean and attractive copy of the scarce first issue of the first English edition, with excellent provenance. Housed in a custom folding box, with red cloth boards over red quarter calf spine, four raised bands and gilt lettering to the spine. Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tells of London lawyer Mr. Utterson's investigation of the peculiar relationship between the respectable Dr. Jekyll and the villainous Mr. Hyde, who are actually the two split personalities of one man. Today, it remains an archetypal text about man's internal conflict between good and evil. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was prepared for publication in December 1885, but Longmans delayed its release until January 1886 so that the "shilling shocker" did not get lost among the many Christmastime publications that lined the shelves at local bookstores. First issues of the first English edition, including this copy, bear the original 1885 publication date (hand corrected to 1886) on the front wrapper. This copy was previously owned by Thomas B. Lockwood (1873-1947), a prominent businessman and rare book collector from Buffalo, New York. An avid bibliophile, Lockwood was a major benefactor for the libraries at University at Buffalo, and their main library bears his name in commemoration. At the library's dedication, Lockwood donated his extensive collection of rare books, which remains a highlight of the library's special collections.. 1st Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good.

Narva, 1886.. Atlas 44 x 65 cm. Texthefte 35 x 22.5 cm bzw. 38 x 26.5cm Atlas: 2 Bll., 13 Tafeln; Texthefte: 10 Bll.; 13 Bll. Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten. Russia - Manuscript drawings of 13th century Narva. OPRITS, Colonel (compiler). (Atlas of drawings of the old Hermeister Castle with its high Hermann tower in the city of Narva with an accompanying explanatory text. Narva (Estonia) 1886. Atlas portfolio in imperial folio (440×650 mm), text 350×225 and 380×265 mm. Printed title, printed dedication leaf to Prince Vladimir Alexandrovich (brother of czar Alexander III), 13 sheets with 40 drawings of original architectural drawings in black ink and numerous colours (each 430×630 mm), together with two text booklets with descriptions, all text in Russian, one with 16 pp. of explanatory text, and a longer, but probably earlier, version of the text, with 26 pp., including 2 blanks, no title-page. Original gilt decorated green cloth with green leather spine, spine somewhat damaged, covers partly worn and rubbed, lacking ties, some flaps with tears. Armorial bookplate of Russian noble woman L. M. Savelova. Fine and detailed architectural colour drawings of the mediaeval Estonian castle in Narva which comprises 40 plans, sections and elevations of the castle, including a general plan that includes the surroundings (within about 500 metres) and part of the Ivangorad Fortress across the river. The Narva castle or Hermann castle (Hermanni linnus) is in the city of Narva on the Estonian side of the Narova river, which forms the border with Russia. The castle was severely damaged by bombing in WWII and this atlas presents an imporant historical source as well as these splendid drawings. Compiled by colonel Opritz, a Russian military engineer, who is mentioned on both the printed title-page and the manuscript one. The drawings comprise 40 plans, sections and elevations of the castle, including a general plan that includes the surroundings (within about 500 meters) including part of the Ivangorad Fortress across the river. Provenance: L. M. Savelova. Could be related to L.M. Savelova, perhaps related to Leonid Mikhailovich Savelov, a genealogist of Russian nobility. An atlas of thirteen loose sheets containing 40 exquisite color scale drawings of the thirteenth-century Narva Castle or Hermann Castle (Hermanni Linnus) as it is usually called, in the city of Narva on the Estonian side of the Narova River, which forms the border with Russia. There are several plans of the different floors, sections and elevations, all superbly hand-colored and with scales. Since the castle was severely damaged by bombing in the Second World War (the top of the main tower was completely destroyed and many walls were reduced to rubble), the present atlas provides not only stunning architectural drawings, but also an essential historical source giving extremely detailed views of every part of the castle before the destruction and restoration. The overview map includes parts of the city walls and parts of the ca. 1500 Ivangorod Fortress on the Russian side of the river. The drawings are preceded by two letterpress sheets in the same format with the title (which also appears on the front of the portfolio), contents and dedications. The manuscript book with the accompanying text is formally lettered as though intended for lithographic reproduction, but it is lettered and written in black and one can still see traces of pencil guide lines for the text and pencil outline drawings for the title-page lettering. The other version of the text is similar but with a decorative border and without a title-page, and each version includes passages not in the other. That without a title-page is probably an earlier version, shortened and revised for the final version. The manuscript title for the text and the printed title-page for the atlas both mention the compiler, a military engineer, Colonel Oprits. Since it is dedicated to Prince Vladimir Alexandrovich (1847-1909), brother of Czar Alexander III and son of the murdered Czar Alexander II, it may have been produced for presentation to him in hope of funding. We have found no other source referring to the castle by the name Hermeister Castle (in Russian Germejsterskago).

        Also Sprach Zarathustra

Leipzig: E. W. Fritzsch, 1886. First Edition. Half Calf. Fine. 8vo, 24 by 16 cm, 9.25 by 6.50 inches. 114, [4], 113, [4], 117 pp. First edition, second issue, in which the first three of four parts of Nietzsche's abstract novel were collected, with new title page printed by C. G. Roder, and published in late 1886. With all points mentioned by William H. Schaberg in "The Nietzsche Canon", p. 218 other than wraps now replaced with very handsome half calf over gray boards binding, and in part three, leaf with Inhalt (table of contents or p. 119) not included. In essence, the parts herein are probably of the first issue other than the addition of half-titles and the like. For instance, the "1" on the bottom of the first page of Part III was weak or non-existent in many copies of its first issue and thus is the case here. Extremely scarce early Nietzsche in any state, owing to the checkered, conflict-ridden publishing history of this and other works by Nietzsche. It was during the issuance of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" that Nietzsche had a complete falling out with his publisher, Ernst Schmeitzner, who issued the first three installments of the work separately between 1883 and 1884, before going bankrupt in 1886. Fritzsch, who had published for Nietzsche earlier, ended up buying up the full Nietzsche catalog and stock from Schmeitzner and was the first to issue the three parts together in 1886. (The fourth and final installment of "Zarathustra" was first distributed in May 1885 (45 copies) but was not issued to the public until March 1892.) Other than one small stain on rear cover and a light scuff here or there, the half calf over boards is in fine condition. A few minor chips on original title page, and since all leaves were not cut even, there are inevitable tiny closed tears or chips on those leaves that protrude ever so slightly more than the others. Some browning of leaves, most pronounced on the title. Otherwise tight and clean.

L'Ocean Pacifique Occidental : description des groupes d'Iles au nord et a l'est du continent Australien

Paris: Libraries Ch. Delagrave, 1886. Octavo, with 32 illustrations (many full page) and one map; a handsome copy in contemporary green morocco, a little sunned and rubbed at spine, gilt armorial device on front cover. Rare French edition of this important illustrated account of Australia and the Western Pacific. Specifically designed as an introduction to the islands near Australia in the light of their proposed annexation, Coote travelled to Norfolk Island, Fiji, New Hebrides, Banks Island, Santa Cruz, Solomon Islands, Loyalty Islands and New Caledonia. A particularly important chapter is devoted to the question of 'Labour and Trade', making the work a good contemporary introduction to the implications and consequences of recruiting - or coercing - Western Pacific Islanders as a seasonal labour force in Australia. The unofficial policy of so-called "black-birding" is condemned by Coote, not least because he sees it as contributing to an escalation in conflict between Europeans and Islanders, a point he supports by listing nearly forty attacks between 1875 and 1881, beginning with the death of several of the crew of the James Birney at Lord Howe Island. The illustrations include a view of Melbourne and another in Norfolk Island, as well as many small vignettes from the Pacific. Ferguson lists several copies of the English edition, but this French edition was not known to him. The French edition also appears to be more thoroughly illustrated, listing 32 illustrations (compared to 23 in the English).

Anna Karenina - (Likely First Issue)

Thomas Y Crowell and Co, 1886. First Edition, Likely First Issu. Hardcover. Very Good. New York: Thomas Crowell, 1886. viii, 5-773, (i), 5 pages of adverts. Brown cloth with gilt stamping, original floral end papers. First Edition in English language, First Printing. Likely First Issue. Precedes all other English translations. While no established priority exists for this title, the general consensus is that the other Tolstoy titles listed opposite the title page are points of issue. The fewer titles listed, the earlier the issue is believed to be. The earliest other examples we've been able to locate have only three titles listed opposite the title page. Of these three titles, My Religion is listed priced at $1.00, which an October 1886 issue of Publisher's Weekly states that Crowell had just reduced the price to that amount. This statement dates the copy with three titles to the later part of 1886. Slightly more common than this example, are those with six titles listed, some of which were published in 1887. As for the color of the cloth, there is no established priority. Crowell issued it in dark brown, blue and green, but it is interesting to note that the copy with only three titles is also in brown cloth. The five pages of ads at the rear of this volume are quite interesting as well. Apparently, later issues had four pages of ads initially, and then subsequent issues and printings had varying page counts. This copy is in about Very Good condition, with original end papers unrestored and apparently unaltered. Chipping to the head and tail of spine, bumped corners, light edge wear and scratching and rubbing to covers. Light wear to side of page block. Front hinge is a bit tender. Name of previous owner barely noticeable on front free end paper, but also penned on first blank page. Light evidence of erased pencil also on first blank page. Pages lightly age tones, but in general bright and no foxing. In general a very nice copy. Extremely rare.

War and Peace (Six Volume Set)

GOTTSBERGER, 1886-01-01. Paperback. Acceptable. FIRST US EDITION, WRAPPERED ISSUE. New York: William S. Gottsberger, 1886. Three volumes in six. (First set: Before Tilsit) 322 pp. [1 ad]; 357 pp; (Second set: The Invasion) 321 pp.; 270pp. [9]; (Third set: Borodino) 290 pp. [4], 391 pp. [6]. First American Edition, first printing with dated title page and the publisher's imprint on all copyright pages. Wrappered (paperback) issue. This issue is mentioned in Bowker's The Annual American Catalogue of 1886, pg. 176. Follows a British edition by Vizetelly which omitted certain passages. Translated from the French edition by Clara Bell.Condition: Poor condition. All six volumes are present with complete text blocks but all of the spines and some of the end papers (including some ads) and wraps are missing. Given the extremely fragile nature of these volumes, this is not too surprising. A previous owner numbered the volumes on their first remaining page in pencil.       London: George Bell, 1886. Octavo; some notes in pencil throughout, but a very good uncut copy in original red cloth, gilt device on upper board. Author's signed presentation copy. Like so many of his contemporaries, Woolner was lured to the Australian goldfields in the hope of securing a fortune. After six months without success he settled briefly in Melbourne where he won a number of commissions including a medallion of Governor Latrobe, and in Sydney a portrait of Sir Charles Fitzroy, and Charles Wentworth. In 1879, during the height of his successful career, he was commissioned to sculpt the statue of Captain Cook which stands in Hyde Park, Sydney. Woolner, famous as both a poet and sculptor, once said 'Poetry is not my proper work in this world; I must sculpture it, not write it'.

Album of watercolours and pencil drawings from the voyage of HMS Myrmidon to Australia and South-East Asia

1886-, 1888. Oblong quarto artist's sketchbook (18.5 x 25.5 cm.), 32 leaves in total with 25 watercolours (one double-page) and 13 pencil drawings, most of the sketches captioned, pencil map on exercise book page loosely inserted; in the original binding of quarter sheep over worn pebble-grained boards, rather stained and worn, but generally sound and very good. Original watercolours and sketches. A charming and accomplished album of amateur watercolours and pencil sketches made by a sailor on board HMS Myrmidon, en route from England to the Australia Station via the Middle East in 1886-1888. HMS Myrmidon was launched in 1867 as a specially-designed survey vessel. In 1884, while serving in the Red Sea, the vessel was involved in fighting in the Mahdist War (sometimes known as the Anglo-Sudan War), and several of the watercolours in this album dramatically depict the fighting. In 1885 Myrmidon was appointed to the Australia Station to undertake hydrographic studies of the coasts of Timor, northern Australia, along the Great Barrier Reef and in the Coral Sea, and also in Bass Strait. Hoskyn Islands in the southern Great Barrier Reef were named after the ship's Commander, Admiralty Hydrographer Richard Frazer Hoskyn (d. 1892). Myrmidon was sold in Hong Kong in 1889. Several of the Spinks views are dramatic renderings of events in the Middle East, notably two watercolours illustrating night attacks in Suakin and another showing the arrival of sailors and a machine gun to protect the town (the Mahdi's revolt in 1885 resulted in the siege which led to the death of General Gordon). There is also a stunning double-page view of the British assault on Alexandria on 11 July 1882. The bulk of the album is a chronological catalogue of ports visited and ships encountered while sailing to and working on the Australia Station, making it a fascinating document of life on board a survey vessel in south-east Asia and Australia. The illustrations notably include scenes of Batavia, Timor, Darwin, Townsville, Sydney and Melbourne. A particularly striking scene shows the collision between Myrmidon and HMS Tyne on 25 April 1887 off Wilson's Promontory. We know slightly more than we might otherwise about Spinks because he was listed as a deserter in the New South Wales Police Gazette (24 March 1886), with the following description: "SPINKS, Walter. HMS Myrmidon. Deserter, at Melbourne, on the 10th instant. Painter, 2nd class, two badges, 30yrs, 5'5½", fair complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes." On the Myrmidon in Australia see a rather good article and accompanying illustration in the Illustrated Sydney News for 21 November 1885. Three men were lost in a nasty accident in July 1886 when they became entangled in the anchor ropes and were drowned. The views are as follows: Sheerness, watercolour; Bay of Biscay, watercolour; "Giberalter", watercolour; Malta, watercolour; Alexandria, watercolour; Port Said, watercolour; Suez, watercolour; Deadless Lighthouse, watercolour; Saukim [in harbour with four other named ships], watercolour; Sailors landing in Saukim with machine gun to protect the Town, pencil; Night attack, watercolour; [Sketch of shield & spears], verso of preceding, pencil; [Untitled: night time attack] black ink, watercolour wash Massowah, watercolour; Fight with a Slaver, verso of preceding, pencil; Aden, watercolour; Colombo, watercolour; Singapore, watercolour; Batavia, watercolour; Sourabaya, watercolour; Flores Passage, watercolour; Wetta, watercolour; Timor, watercolour; [Untitled: horse & rider surrounded by locals, apparently Australian Aborigines, with weapons], pencil; Port Darwin, watercolour; Townsville, watercolour; HMS Rapid, pencil; Farm Cove, Sydney, watercolour; HMS Iris, pencil; Oberon Bay, pencil; Port Melbourne, pencil; Franklin Island, pencil; Day Dreams [portrait of woman with floral border, Spinks' wife or girlfriend?], watercolour; HMS Myrmidon & Tyne in collision off Wilsons Promontory April 25 1887, pencil; HMS Myrmidon, pencil; [Untitled: Myrmidon in rough seas], pencil; The Bombardment of Alexandria by the British Fleet, July 11 1882 [double-page], watercolour; Her Majesty the Queen, watercolour; World map on loose leaf, pencil.
