        O Le Tala I Tino O Tagata Ma Mea Ola Eseese ... A Manual of Zoology... in the Samoan Dialect

      Chilworth and London: Unwin Brothers, 1886. Octavo, illustrated, presentation note to Jason Spicer tipped in, bookplate of Edward Unwin; a very good copy in the original decorated boards. Samoan zoology. First edition: an uncommon and impressively detailed account of zoology entirely in the "Samoan Dialect". This was a presentation copy from the author, with his note tipped in 'Presented to Jas. Spicer Esq. With grateful acknowledgements of kind sympathy and generous aid Thos. Powell.' Thomas Powell worked for the London Missionary Society in the South Seas, and published several books on Samoan themes. His charming Manual of Zoology, printed almost entirely "in the Samoan dialect", covers the gamut of the animal kingdom, from protozoa such as the amoeba ("{i amipa}"), via the invertebrates, to birds and animals. Powell no doubt faced challenges in finding Samoan terms for many of the creatures described - few Samoans at the time of publication can have seen a St. Bernard dog ("{i maile a perenata paia}") or a rhinoceros ("{i isu-nifoa aferika}"), let alone a duck-billed platypus ("{i gutu-pato}"). This copy belonged to Edward Unwin, one of the Unwin Brothers who printed the book, and had previously been presented to the printer James Spicer by the author, to whom the Unwins were related by marriage.

        Hobson-Jobson: being a Glossary of Anglo-Indian Colloquial Words and Phrases, and of Kindred Terms;

      London: John Murray,, 1886. Etymological, Historical, Geographical, and Discursive. Octavo (216 × 135 mm). Contemporary red half morocco-grained leather "native" binding, red fine pimple-grained cloth, title gilt to the spine, bands bracketed by thick and thin paired gilt rules, edges finely sprinkled red, marbled endpapers. Title page in red and black, bound with the half-title. A little rubbed at the extremities, light browning, else very good. First edition. Soldier and scholar, Yule's edition of Marco Polo's travels won him the RGS Founder's Medal, and enhanced his reputation as "one of the leading authorities on the historical geography of central Asia in general and the history of medieval travel writing in particular" (ODNB). But Yule's reputation rests less on his scholarly writings than on his co-authorship, with A. C. Burnell , of this "extraordinary glossary of Anglo-Indian colloquial words and phrases … This encyclopaedic work … provides modern historians with a unique view of the everyday language of British officers in colonial India. Yule was fascinated by the complex history of the incorporation of Hindustani, Bengali, and other Indian terms into English usage, and his rendering of this history in the form of an idiosyncratic yet highly engaging glossary has proved, perhaps ironically, to be his most enduring literary contribution". Without doubt one of the most enlightening, and readable, dictionaries ever compiled. Essential reference, and very uncommon in this first edition. Ownership inscription of "H.A. Slin, Ootacamund, June '98" to the first blank.

Carteret IV, 87. Faint, never serious foxing on perhaps half the leaves, otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, the leaves clean and fresh with vast margins, and THE MAGNIFICENT BINDING LUSTROUS AND UNWORN. This is one of the most impressive examples one will ever see of Marius Michel the younger's ground-breaking and influential "La Flore Ornamentale" bindings, covering here a unique copy of a monumental edition of the "Song of Songs." Considered the best binder of his generation as well as the founder of modern French bookbinding, Henri Marius Michel (1846-1925) believed passionately "that bookbinding needed a new vocabulary of ornamentation in order to express the mood and spirit of contemporary authors." (Duncan & De Bartha) He found in the 1878 International Exposition a convenient and appropriate forum through which to promote the revolutionary style of decorative ornaments based on nature, a style he called "La Flore Ornamentale." He was at first viewed as impudent and rebellious, and his work was objected to on theoretical grounds as being too much like "art," and too little like a product of the binder's craft. But, in the words of Duncan & De Bartha, "the young man's fervent convictions, as well as his superb technical skills, as both a binder and a gilder, won him an increasing number of supporters. By 1885 his designs were seen as a viable alternative to traditional bindings for certain books." Other binders began to imitate his approach, but Marius Michel the younger was the "undisputed leader of the new movement, [his] incomparable technique, harmonious selection of color, and infinite variety of plant motifs [placing] his work above those of his contemporaries." Our unique copy of this luxury edition of the "Song of Songs" was reserved especially for artist Alexandre Bida, and was augmented with nearly 100 additional proofs done on various papers. A pupil of Eug?ne Delacroix, Bida (1813-1895) was a painter of the Romantic school who became a master of Orientalism, a term used by art historians for the imitation or depiction of aspects of Middle Eastern and East Asian culture by artists from the West. Notable recent exhibitions of his work have been held at the Mus?e d'Art et d'Histoire du Juda?sme in Paris in March of 2012 ("Les Juifs dans l'Orientalisme") and at the National Gallery of Art in April of 2013 ("Orientalism: A Selection of Prints and Drawings"). In addition to the volume reserved for Bida, 10 special copies of this edition were printed on Chine, and ABPC and Americana Exchange describe auctions between 1987 and 2006 in which such copies in Marius Michel bindings similar to ours were sold (for as much as $35,200 and $40,600, including buyer's premiums).

        Autograph Transcription, signed ("S. Fillmore Bennett"), of his hymn "The Sweet By-and-By," as part of his Autograph Transcription "History of The Sweet By-and-By copied by the author for C.F. Gunther, Chicago"; with an Autograph Letter of transmission to C.F. Gunther

      Richmond, IL, may 14, 1886 - Bennett (1836-1898) composed the lyrics to what was to become one of America's most well known hymns in 1861, with music by Joseph P. Webster. The account of its composition, in less than 30 minutes, is given in this manuscript "History": "- I said, 'Webster, what is the matter now?' 'It's no matter,' he replied, 'it will be all right by and by.' The idea of the hymn came to me like a flash of sunlight, and I replied, 'The Sweet By and By! Why would not that make a good hymn?' 'Maybe it would,' he said indifferently. Turning to my desk I penned the words of the hymn as fast as I could write. I handed the words to Webster. As he read his eyes kindled, and stepping to the desk he began writing the notes. Taking his violin, he played the melody and then jotted down the notes of the chorus. It was not over thirty minutes from the time I took my pen to write the words before two friends with Webster and myself were singing the hymn -" "The Sweet By-and-By" was featured in the Academy Award winning film "Sergeant York"; Charles Ives used the tune in his Orchestral Set No. 2; it has become one of America's most reecognizable hymns 12mo.         Restauratie aan de Sluis II, Zijkanmaal naar de Maas, 3 September 1886.

      1886. Original photograph, albumen print, 39 x 32,5 cm on mount. KEYWORDS:netherlands / limburg / Neer / Maas

Very good in a Chocolate Porter full morocco binding by the Chelsea Bindery, single gilt fillet to the boards, gilt title, raised bands to the spine, single fillet panels within the compartments, top edge gilt, others uncut. A handsome and very sober presentation, in decided contrast to the content. First Edition. A splendidly and wilfully eccentric collection of beer lore and literature, a typical Leadenhall Press production, motivated by a sprightly and slightly anachronistic antiquarianism.

        Cashel Byron's Profession. A Novel.

      [London:] The Modern Press, 1886 - Original wrappers. Housed in a green quarter morocco slipcase and chemise. Wrappers spotted and worn. First separate issue, larger untrimmed variant, inscribed by the author. Originally printed in the April 1885-March 1886 issues of "To-Day", this first edition was printed from the corrected and revised stereos of the original setting for the journal. This is the larger, variant issue, with the preliminary blank leaf bound at the beginning. Shaw explains the variant this way: "The size of the bigger copies is due to the fact that they reproduced not only the type but the format of To-day. But the booksellers objected that in this form it occupied too much room to be displayed on their stalls and counters. It was probably cut down as far as the margins would allow to meet this objection" (Laurence). Inscribed by Shaw, "This is the first Issue, which was so tall that the booksellers refused to exhibit it on their counters, as it took too much room. So it had to be cut down. G. Bernard Shaw 26/7/30." Laurence A3. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

      Harper and Brothers 1886 - The first American edition ( while preceded by the English edition, the American edition would appear to be genuinely scarce ) published by Harper and Brothers in 1996. Bound in publishers original wrappers. A very good copy with some even wear and chipping to the blue-green wrappers. Housed in a near fine quarter leather slipcase with five bands and gold titling to the spine. Tipped in is an autographed note in pencil written and signed by Shaw. The note reads ' To Lester. From a nonagenarian, these first fruits of his ------ to half a centurion. Affect. GBS ' Note apparently jotted off between 1946 and his death in 1950 - the period in which the aforementioned label applied. On the verso of the note there is a pen squiggle.         Map of Jersey City and Hoboken, Hudson County N.J

      New York: M. Dripps, 1886. An interesting and very rare map, this from an issue which gives the printer's name. Very rare: there are no copies in the recorded institutional holdings. The area covered by the map extends form North Bergen and the Elysian Fields of Weehawken south to Bayonne, on the west the boundary is the Hackensack River and on the east New York Bay and the Hudson River. As with Dripps' other pocket maps, he is scrupulous about naming public buildings, streets, canals, parks, reservoirs, tunnels and ferry routes. In addition, the Statue of Liberty is located: this dates the map to after 1886, the style of printing and colouring all suggests an actual date shortly afterwards. Little is known of Matthew Dripps beyond his legacy of published maps. Based in New York, Matthew Dripps is now best known for the maps of New York City which he published during the second half of the 19th century, but he also produced large scale maps of most the area surrounding the city as well as a New York State map. Folding hand-coloured lithographic map (38 x 23 1/2 inches), printed by the Boell Photo. Steam Lith. Co. Flattened and matted. Accompanied by the original dark brown sand-grained cloth covers, outer covers blocked in blind, the upper cover with the title 'Dripps' Map of Jersey City' blocked in gilt, 1p. letterpress 'Catalogue of M. Dripps' Maps' tipped onto front pastedown of cover.

      NEW YORK CITY NY 1886 - On offer is an original typed letter signed [TLS] dated The Society for Ethical Culture, NY, April 14, 1886, 1-1/2 pages by Felix Adler (1851-1933) Jewish rationalist intellectual, popular lecturer, religious leader and social reformer who founded the Ethical Culture movement. Although not mentioned by name this was written to Douglas Volk, the American artist noted for his famous portrait of Abraham Lincoln that was used for the postage stamp. Also of note this letter comes on the heels of Volk's founding of the Minneapolis School of Fine Art, Minnesota (now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design) and served as its director until 1893. Adler writes: "My Dear Friend: I must send you a few lines even if they be brief and printed in the stiff letters of the typewriter which you must excuse. I want to tell you simply how dear your kind words are to me and how I treasure and shall always treasure your precious friendship. I am glad to learn that your first days in Minneapolis have been spent in bright sunshine and I trust it may be a favorable augury for the near and distant future. You have indeed a great work before you and it must cheer and inspire you to feel that you are to plant your great and holy art in virgin and fruitful soil. I shall follow your progress with constant and undeviating sympathy, you may be sure, and I trust you will not fail to keep me informed even of every little thing that occurs in your life, of every little sign of progress and of every disappointment, for these too, of course, will not be wanting. With kindest and sincerest good-wishes from all of us to all of you, and especially to you your friend Felix Adler." BIO NOTES: At the age of twenty-four, Adler founded the New York Society for Ethical Culture in 1876. His sermon on May 15, 1876 is considered to be the date on which the religion he called Ethical Culture was established. His lectures before this society on Sundays in New York were well known and attended, and were routinely reported on in the New York Times. Adler's belief in deed rather than creed led his society to foster two innovative projects. In 1877 the NYSEC sponsored Visiting Nursing, where nurses, and doctors if necessary, visited the homebound sick in poor districts. This service was eventually incorporated into the New York City health system. A year later, in 1878, a Free Kindergarten was established as a tuition-free school for working people's children. It evolved over time into the Ethical Culture Fieldston School. In 1902 Adler was given the chair of political and social ethics at Columbia University, which he held until his death in 1933.         Liberia: The Americo-African Republic. Being Some Impressions of the Climate, Resources and People, Resulting from Personal Observations and Experiences in West Africa

      New York: Edward O. Jenkins Sons. 1886. First. First edition. Octavo. 107pp., illustrations. Bound in modern quarter calf and gray paper over boards with black morocco spine label gilt. The very edge of the front fly has been archivally strengthened, affecting one letter in the inscription, a light dampstain in the bottom corner of the text block, still a handsome, very good copy of a rare book. Inscribed by the author to the wife of African-American journalist T. Thomas Fortune: "To Mrs. Carrie Fortune, Yours very truly, T. McCants Stewar[t]. Feb. 13th, '86". Thomas McCants Stewart (also known as T. McCants), born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1853, was an exceptional 19th Century African-American. As a lawyer, minister, emigrationist, writer, and lecturer, his life intersected with many of the best-known figures of antebellum and Reconstruction America: Booker T. Washington, T. Thomas Fortune, and Francis J. Grimke, to name a few. His biography was bound up with the history of black life in Charleston, the early years of Howard University, immigrationist ventures in Liberia, and the development of the Bethel A.M.E. Church in New York City. His portrait appeared in the landmark book meant to illustrate the progress of the race: Men of Mark: Eminent, Progressive and Rising by Rev. William J. Simmons (Cleveland, Ohio: George M. Rewell & Company, 1887). He has been the subject of a fairly recent biography: African-American Odyssey: The Stewarts, 1853-1963 by Albert S. Broussard (Lawrence: University Press of Kansas, 1998). T. Thomas Fortune was the foremost African-American journalist of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Using his editorial position at a series of black newspapers in New York City, Fortune established himself as a leading spokesman and defender of the rights of African-Americans in both the South and the North. He married Carrie C. Smiley in the late 1870s, but the marriage dissolved in the early 1900s (two children, Jessica and Frederick, survived to adulthood). An exceptionally uncommon title, inscribed copies are rare. We've had one other, inscribed to a relative the day before this copy was inscribed. .
