        The Game of Logic

London: Macmillan and Co, 1886. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition with 1886 listed on the copyright page. Very Good+, lacking the accompanying envelope and markers. Light staining to cloth at edge of front cover, light abrasions to at spine. Previous owner bookplate to front paste down, with "Received Nov. 23, 1886" written on half-title page. This first edition was rejected by Carroll as it did not meet his high standards, though he did allow an estimated 50 copies to be sold in America. An edition deemed suitable was published in 1887. A lovely and rare item, housed in a custom cloth slip-case.

The Bostonians. A Novel. In Three Volumes

Macmillan and Co., London 1886 - Macmillan and Co., London, 1886. Three volumes. [iv], 244; [iv], 226; [iv], 232, [4] pp. The title page of Volume II is stamped: WITH THE PUBLISHER'S COMPLIMENTS. The three-decker first edition, which precedes the one volume edition, is truly rare: only 500 copies were printed, and then another 100 copies a month later. There are no identifiable distinctions between the two. James' satirical novel of the feminist movement, and one of the first American novels to allude to lesbian relationships. The novel was not well received in Boston. Volume I: Corners bumped on outer leaves, half-title and final pages lightly foxed, and the fore-edge of the half-title page chipped. Volume II: Corners bumped on outer leaves, half-title and final page of text chipped. Volume III: Corners bumped on outer leaves; some chipping along the edges of the four-page publisher's catalogue bound at back. Bound by Gray Parrot in three-quarter brown morocco, with green linen cloth, in the spirit of the period. The binding is in Fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Sketch of the Career of Richard F. Burton collected from "Men of Eminence", from Sir Richard and Lady Burton's own works; from the press; from personal knowledge, and various other reliable sources

London: Waterlow & Sons, 1886. First edition. An expansion of the extremely rare "Sketch By An Old Oxonian" of 1880. Photographic frontispiece portrait of Burton by Kingsbury & Notcutt, Woodbury-print by Waterlow & Sons. [iv], 96 pp. 1 vols. Small 8vo. Original glazed black boards with Burton's signature stamped in gilt, black cloth spine. Spine repaired, flyleaves darkened, still a very good copy of a fragile book. First edition. An expansion of the extremely rare "Sketch By An Old Oxonian" of 1880. Photographic frontispiece portrait of Burton by Kingsbury & Notcutt, Woodbury-print by Waterlow & Sons. [iv], 96 pp. 1 vols. Small 8vo. WIth superb Woodburytpe portrait. The second attempt at a biography of the legendary explorer, linguist, and author Richard F. Burton, utilizing the contents of a short "Sketch" by Richards, Burton's closest friend at Oxford (published in 1880 and unobtainably rare), with new material bringing his life up to 1886 (Burton died in 1890). Contradicting Burton's own later accounts of his unpopularity, Richards wrote that Burton was "brilliant, rather wild, and very popular," at Oxford, adding however that "none of us foresaw his future greatness." The book at hand contains a 47-page biography and various appendices including a 13-page autobiography written around 1856. It was followed by a full-fledged treatment by Francis Hitchman the following year. An historic, scarce, and curious volume, a prelude to the vast eruption of Burton studies and biographies which was to follow, and which shows no signs of diminishing. Penzer pp. 304-6 ("rare")

Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, the Astronomer-Poet of Persia

Boston & London: Houghton Mifflin and Company [&] London: Bernard Quaritch, [1886?]. Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald with an Accompaniment of Drawings by Elihu Vedder. Square folio. Original brown cloth over bevelled boards, gilt lettered spine and front cover, elaborate Art Nouveau design in gilt on front cover, top edges gilt, dark slate-green coated endpapers. Frontispiece, decorative title page, colophon, dedication, divisional title, 48 plates illustrating the text, 3 pages of notes within decorative borders (a total of 56 plates complete). Inner joints strengthened, small abrasion to spine, a few marks to covers, ownership inscription on recto of frontispiece, some foxing, otherwise a very good copy. Early printing of the Vedder edition, the first to carry the name of Bernard Quaritch as co-publisher; originally published in an edition dated 1884. Potter, in his bibliography of the Rubáiyát, mentions an issue of the first edition with the Quaritch imprint but does not enlarge on whether or not it is dated. Elihu Vedder (1836?-1923) was an American Symbolist artist who trained in New York, Paris, and Italy and became friends with authors such as Herman Melville and Walt Whitman. Strongly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, as well as the mysticism of William Blake and W. B. Yeats, Vedder became known for his allegorical paintings of women and was also commissioned to produce glassware and sculptures for Tiffany. The first edition of this Rubáiyát was so popular that it sold out in six days, and it made Vedder's name as a leading American illustrator. "When Houghton Mifflin commissioned Elihu Vedder to illustrate The Rubáiyát, they employed an artist with a rich sense of classical interpretation. Vedder spent 11 months in Rome fulfilling the commission, producing monochrome illustrations in a Greco-Roman style, which caused the London journal Athenaeum to describe Vedder as the latest follower of Michelangelo. Nonetheless, the Grove Art Online encyclopaedia comments on the Vedder drawings as 'some of the earliest examples of Art Nouveau in America'... Houghton Mifflin reissued the Vedder Rubáiyát in different formats in 1886. New editions and reprints continued into the 1920s" (Martin & Mason, The Art of Omar Khayyam: Illustrating Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat, 2007).

        Monumentos arquitectónicos de España.

Madrid, Calcografía Nacional, 1859[-1886]. - 89 instalments. 1mo (74.5 x 60 cm). With 280 lithographed and engraved plates, including 58 chromolithographs, 12 tinted lithographs and several printed in a single colour. Text in Spanish and French in parallel columns, with decorated chromolithographed initials. Each instalment in its original publisher's printed palladian blue paper wrapper. First edition, in its 89 original instalments, of a monumental series giving an overview of classical Spanish architecture, heavily influenced by Spain's Islamic past. Besides accompanying text in Spanish and French, each part contains 2 to 4 very large plates giving views, plans and details of the architectural monuments and its artistic decorations and ornaments, all of great artistic quality. The monuments include: the Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, the Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes, the Mosque of Tornerías, the Complutense University of Madrid, the Alhambra Complex, the Santiago Archpriestal Church in Villena, etc. Even the architectural styles of "Christian" buildings like cathedrals and churches, are heavily influenced by Islamic architecture, this symbiosis of Christian and Islamic architecture is known as the Mudéjar style. The text accompanying the plates is divided over several non-consecutive instalments, occasionally skipping instalments or combining texts, so production of the instalments could happen simultaneously. Several copies are found with the chapters and accompanying plates bound following the correct order of the texts instead of the order of the original instalments. Nonetheless the publishing took decades and was for a long time put on hold and later continued under the direction of José Gil Dorregaray, whose dead in 1882 would lead to the end of the series in 1886, leaving several of the texts unfinished. With embossed library stamp on plates. The text and plates with some foxing, but otherwise good. Most of the wrappers are separated along the spine and have some small tears along the edges, but are also still good. Calcografía Nacional: Cat. General II (2004), pp. 578-613, nos. 4774-5038 (listing all illustrations and artists); Cat. lib. Clarence H. Clark (1888), pp. 1038-1046 (giving descriptions of texts and plates); Palau 179936; not in Atabey; BAL; Blackmer; Millard, Italian and Spanish Books. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Livre de Prières Tissé d?après les Enluminures des Manuscrits du XIVe au XVIe Siècle

Lyon: R. P. J. Hervier, dessinateur; A. Henry Fabricant, for A. Roux, 1886-1887. Small 4to, [6], 43, [1] (= 50) pp., 3 full-page & 1 half-page miniatures, various styles of decorative borders & initials throughout; woven entirely in silver-gray and black silk. Original crushed purple morocco by Kauffmann-Petit, raised bands, richly decorated doublures in a mosaic style, top & bottom edges gilt; in perfect condition. Of the greatest rarity. First and only edition of the only illustrated book ever successfully woven on a machine loom, presaging the advent of computer typesetting, imaging, and printing. Using the punch-card system of the Jacquard looms, a process which prefigured the computer in uncanny details, programmed perforations in the cards controlled the weaving movements of the hooks manipulating the threads. The workers at Jacquard were eventually able to program a loom to weave images and text from ancient Books of Hours into a book; this is thus the first example of a ?computer-generated? book and marks the birth of desk-top publishing. The book was created from over 100,000 punch cards programmed to weave 400 woof threads per square inch (demanding machine movements of not more than a tenth of a millimeter); it took two years and close to fifty trials runs before a copy was successfully completed. Paul Marais, ?Livre de Prières tissé? in Bulletin du Bibliophile, 1889, pages 163-66. Bowden, Faster than Thought: The Invention of Perforated Cards by M. Jacquard, London: 1953, pages 23, 350-1 & 379-80. Vicaire V, 341. {Sandra Hindman?s description for reference only] Of the utmost rarity, this wholly unorthodox Book of Prayers is entirely machine woven of gray and black silk, using the Jacquard system of punched-cards in Lyon in the late nineteenth century. It is evidently the only woven book ever produced, and the technique anticipates computer programming. Its illustrative program draws widely on fresco painting of the Italian Renaissance and French manuscript illumination by Jean Bourdichon and of the Duke of Berry. A splendid signed Art Nouveau binding adorns the book. [4] 6 + 44 + [4] = 58 pp, small in 4o, 43 numbered pages, plus 6 printed preliminary pages, plus 4 pages front and back of mounted silk, unprinted, text block 168 x 138 mm., one half-page, three full-page illustrations, in addition to various styles of decorative borders and initials throughout on every page, woven entirely in silver-gray and black silk. Fine binding of dark brown levant morocco by Kaufmann Petit, art nouveau Parisian binders, brown silk doublures, in pristine condition, with a marbled slipcase and chemise, brown morocco spine, elaborately gilt. Dimensions 175 x 138 mm. PROVENANCE 1. Woven in Lyon, perhaps passing through the Parisian agent J. Kauffmann, this is one of between 50 or 60 books printed with silver and black thread on silk looms that were programmed using the punched-card system developed by Joseph-Marie Jacquard (1752-1834). Evidently books were all custom bound when sold, and they remained in stock for some years (suggesting that the production was not a huge success). It is said that 50 were printed, but to the best of our knowledge there is no actual record of the original edition. 2. The Library of Jacques Levy (Istanbul 1905-New York 1980). TEXT p. v, Half-title page, ?Livre de Prieres?; p. v1, Monogram (left blank); p. vi, Title-page, ?Livre de Prieres Tissé d?après les enluminures des manuscrits du XIVe au XVIe siècle. Lyon mdccclxxxvi?; p. viii, official sanction of the content of the volume, incipit, ?Varias precum formulas,? with the date September 8, 1886 and the name of Cardinal Louis-Marie Claverot, archbishop of Lyon and Vienne, with his arms and motto, along with the archiepiscopal arms of Lyon and the motto ?Prima sedes Galliarum,? a reference to the importance of the city as a seat of Christian faith from the late second century on; pp. 1-10, ?Les Prières du Matin et du Soir?; pp. 11-24, ?Le saint Sacrifice de la Messe?; pp. 35-32, ?La Messe de Mariage?; pp. 33-43, Prayers, for Communion (p. 33), to the Sacrament (p. 36), to the Holy Spirit (p. 38), to the Holy Virgin (p. 39), diverse prayers (p. 42); p. [44], ?Table des matières?; This is the only illustrated book ever successfully woven on a machine loom, and it was produced in this single edition. The Livre de Prières anticipated the advent of computer programming and automation. Using the punch-card system of the Jacquard looms, which prefigured the computer in uncanny details, programmed perforations in the cards controlled the weaving movement of the hooks manipulating the threads. The sequence of punched cards was fastened together in a chain, and the chain passed over needles, which were fastened to the warp threads. If there was no punched hole, the warp thread remained compressed. If there was a punched hole, the warp thread would engage. It is not known how many punch cards it took to produce this book, but estimates are between 200,000 and 500,000 cards programmed in order to weave 400 woof threads per 2.5 cm. (approximately one square inch), demanding machine movements of not more than a tenth of a millimeter. Fine quality gray and black silk threads were used. It took two years and close to fifty trials before a copy was successfully completed. Once woven, the fragile sheets of silk were carefully folded in half (the recto of one page on the left and the verso of the preceding page on the right) and glued over a piece of cardboard that served to give the necessary stiffening to the delicate fabric. Bindings were custom made at the time of purchase, a practice also followed in some early printed books, such as incunables. The present copy, for example, was bound only fifteen years after printing. Some examples were also luxuriously boxed. The production won prizes in its day. It was displayed in 1889 in the Lyon Pavillion at the Universal Exposition, featured by the firm J. A. Henry, whose textiles were highly reputed. The firm won a ?grand prix? at the 1889 Exposition. The art historian and authority on medieval illumination, Henri Martin praised the imprint (see Randall, 1981, p. 662, n. 34), and the curator of the Bibliothèque Mazarine, Paul Marais, wrote an article on the production, in which he wondered whether in the twentieth century woven books could be bought in department stores, but concluded that the book would remain but a ?curiosity.? And, well it has. The punched cards served as the primary inspiration for the famous ?Analytical Engine? conceived by Charles Babbage (1791-1871) often considered to be the ?father of the computer?); see on the punched-card system of the Jacquard looms and its relationship to early computers, Bowden, 1951, pp. 23, 350-51, and 379-80. The ?Analytical Engine? possessed striking parallels with the modern computer. Computer science enthusiasts and bibliophile collectors have seized on the book?s special relationship to the computer. There is, according to Randall, a Jacquard loom and woven pictures produced by this method on view at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. (Randall, 1981, p. 667, n. 28). ILLUSTRATION Every page is surrounded by border decoration of considerable variety; listed below are the major illustrations: p. ix, Nativity; p. 12, Crucifixion; p. 16, Virgin and Child surrounded by Music-Playing Angels; p. 33, Christ with the Virgin and St. John the Baptist (half-page). The designer?s use of facsimile illustrations of manuscript illumination has been treated by L. Randall (1981). She notes that Hervier (whose identity she was unable to discover) used a composite manuscript facsimile entitled the Imitation de Jésus-Christ published by Gruel and Engelmann in the late 1870s or early 1880s. The donor portraits that occur in the Lyon imprint on pp. 1 and 4 occur also in the Imitation, plates XXXI-XXXII, and these plates in turn copy a manuscript from Ghent, datable to c. 1425 made for Elizabeth van Munte and Daniel Rym now on the Walters Art Museum (W. 166). Two of the large illustrations, the Nativity and Christ with the Virgin and John the Baptist, were inspired by Italian Renaissance paintings?"respectively the Linaiouoli Triptych attributed then to Fra Angelico (the Nativity) and Raphael?s Disputà in the Stanza della Segnatura (cf. Randall, 1981, pp. 655-58). The Crucifixion derives from a painting by Fra Bartholomeo. The celebrated Jean Bourdichon, made popular by the facsimile of the Grandes Heures of Anne of Brittany published by Engelmann and Graf between 1846 and 1849, influenced much of the border decoration. The title page is indebted to the Grandes Heures du duc de Berry (BnF, MS lat. 919, f. 86), surely also available in facsimile during the period. With regard to its illustrative content, the Livre de Prières exemplifies nineteenth-century attitudes toward manuscript illumination. Through editions such as Gruel?s Imitation de Jésus-Christ, devotional publishing sought to teach catechism to children and to promote ?good taste? through manuscript illumination. The Imitation de Jésus-Christ appeared in fascicules on the tenth, twentieth, and thirtieth day of each month, not unlike the serial publication of novels. With Gruel, Geoffreoy Engleman, later joined by Auguste Graf, held a near-exclusive on the production of the gift book, that is, books for the Mass, ?livres de raison,? and marriage books, churned out in large editions, but also sometimes written and illuminated entirely by hand by neo-Gothic artists. These facsimiles and the related neo-Gothic manuscripts went a long way toward forming a basis for the re-appreciation of medieval manuscript illumination on the eve of modern times. The Livre de Prières figures in that history of recovery. In some ways, it is an elegant, though unorthodox, version of the nineteenth-century gift book, entirely in keeping with the taste of the times (Hindman et al, 2001, esp. pp. 132-143). Comparing the Lyon imprint to gift books, Harthan declared it to be the ?final exaltation of the medieval Book of Hours? (Harthan, 1977, p. 174). It is difficult to determine how many copies of the Livre de Prières were printed and how many are extant, since there is no census of the edition. This is in part because the Livre de Prières falls between the cracks of traditional cataloguing, because the book is technically neither a printed book nor a manuscript. In addition to a copy in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (Randall, 1981), there are copies in the following North American institutions: Chicago, the Newberry Library; Chicago, the University of Chicago Special Collections; Denison Library, Scripps College; the Cincinnati Historical Society; the University of Delaware; the College of Saint Catherina, Saint Paul, Minnesota; the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York (see Randall, 1981, n. 30, and Laird, in Burlingham, 2001, no. 63, p. 131, for lists of copies in North America and abroad).         Madame Bovary

London: Vizetelly & Co.,, 1886. Provincial Manners. Translation from the French Édition définitive by Eleanor Marx-Aveling. Octavo. Publisher's blue-green diagonal-ribbed cloth, titles in gilt on blue panel with gilt floral decoration, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, back cover ruled in blind and publisher's device in blind, black coated endpapers, edges untrimmed. Frontispiece with tissue guard, 5 plates. Spine slightly rolled and toned, extremities lightly rubbed, occasional very minor foxing to contents. An excellent copy. First edition in English of Flaubert's masterpiece. The translator was Karl Marx's daughter, then living openly with Edward Bibbens Aveling, a married man whose name she used in conjunction with her own. Flaubert's debut novel was five years in the making, and originally serialised in the Revue de Paris. It provoked charges of obscenity and immorality from the French government, resulting in a trial at which Flaubert was acquitted. The ensuing publicity also ensured that upon publication the book became a bestseller. The heroine of the novel, Emma Bovary, ultimately commits suicide by swallowing arsenic - a fate which also befell her translator, Eleanor Marx-Aveling.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

      O. O., 25. VI. 1886.. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.. - Wohlerhalten. - Gedruckt in: Louise von Francois und Conrad Ferdinand Meyer. Ein Briefwechsel (2. Aufl., Berlin 1920), S. 189f.
