Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1886., 1886. FIRST EDITION, octavo, pp. 141; [1], blank; [1], advertisement; [1], blank. Handsomely bound in recent full black Morocco, gilt titles to spine, marbled endpapers. The first hardbound issue, with the salmon cloth bound in at rear. Internally very clean. An attractive copy. The classic mystery crime novel/ horror story (or Crawler as Stevenson called it), inspired by the case of the Edinburgh body snatchers Burke and Hare, was written in just three days, although it was shelved by the author for three years as he considered it too disturbing for publication. Jekyll and Hyde is a chilling masterpiece work; a brilliantly suggestive, resonant study of human duality by a natural storyteller.

Map of Jersey City and Hoboken, Hudson County N.J.

New York: M. Dripps, 1886. Folding hand-coloured lithographic map (38 x 23 1/2 inches), printed by the Boell Photo. Steam Lith. Co. Flattened and matted. Accompanied by the original dark brown sand-grained cloth covers, outer covers blocked in blind, the upper cover with the title 'Dripps' Map of Jersey City' blocked in gilt, 1p. letterpress 'Catalogue of M. Dripps' Maps' tipped onto front pastedown of cover. An interesting and very rare map, this from an issue which gives the printer's name. Very rare: there are no copies in the recorded institutional holdings. The area covered by the map extends form North Bergen and the Elysian Fields of Weehawken south to Bayonne, on the west the boundary is the Hackensack River and on the east New York Bay and the Hudson River. As with Dripps' other pocket maps, he is scrupulous about naming public buildings, streets, canals, parks, reservoirs, tunnels and ferry routes. In addition, the Statue of Liberty is located: this dates the map to after 1886, the style of printing and colouring all suggests an actual date shortly afterwards. Little is known of Matthew Dripps beyond his legacy of published maps. Based in New York, Matthew Dripps is now best known for the maps of New York City which he published during the second half of the 19th century, but he also produced large scale maps of most the area surrounding the city as well as a New York State map.

Dapes inemptae, oft de Mouffe Schans, dat is de soeticheyt des buyten-levens, vergeselschapt met de boecken. [Netherlands, 1619(?) (not after 1621)]. 12mo. Recased in 17th-century vellum.

64 pp. J.G. Frederiks, "Petrus Hondius", in: TNTL VI (1886), pp. 103-159 (this copy?); Nijhoff & V. Hattum 138 (KB copy); STCN (KB copy); WorldCat/KVK (KB copy); cf. Dash, Tulipomania (1999). Second copy located, of the first edition of a Dutch poem celebrating life on the country house Moffenschans (literally "Trenches of the Krauts"). It's the second known Dutch poem in the genre known as "hofdicht" (country house poetry) and particularly interesting because of its autobiographical character. The author, Petrus Hondius, appears to be a permanent guest in the house owned by Terneuzen's mayor Johan Serlippens, as he had brought his own library and helped shaping the renowned garden. The poem celebrates the country life in contrast with life in the city, the time spent reading, the beauty of the garden, etc. Hondius is known for growing tulips and his enthusiasm is reflected in poetry celebrating their beauty. His enthusiasm for tulips was followed by many, including Maurice of Nassau, which contributed to the tulip craze which peaked in 1637.After Terneuzen was liberated from the Spaniards in 1583 by Maurice of Nassau, he had his German brother in law, Philips van Hohenlohe, built fortifications around the city, including an entrenchment just outside the city walls, which became known as the Moffenschans. After the German troops had left, the ground was bought by Terneuzen's mayor Serlippens, who built a country house and garden, maintaining its original name.About one fourth of the title-page has been cut off and replaced with blank paper, not touching any text; some minor soiling to the title-page and the last leaf. Good copy of an extremely rare poem.

A LIST OF THE MAMMALS OF MANITOBA...TRANSACTIONS OF THE MANITOBA SCIENTIFIC AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY, No. 23, MAY, 1886

[Toronto. 1886].. [2],26pp. plus errata leaf. Illus. Original illustrated wrappers. Minor chipping and splitting to backstrip, short tear to rear wrapper. Early 20th-century bookplate on verso of the front wrapper. Very good. In a cloth chemise and clamshell case, gilt leather label. An extraordinary presentation copy of Seton's exceedingly rare first published work, which predates his second book by a full decade. Only a few copies are known to exist of this highly-desirable Seton rarity. Ernest Thompson Seton, born Ernest Thompson, emigrated to Canada as a child. After graduating from the Ontario College of Art, he began his travels as a naturalist, settling in Manitoba in 1881. In 1892, he was appointed Naturalist to the Manitoba Government before moving to the United States to write and illustrate more than forty books of animal stories. ^This pamphlet consists mainly of Seton's field notes, with six in-text illustrations by him, including the titlepage vignette of a mule, or jumping deer, repeated on the wrappers. The presentation inscriptions read, "Montagu Chamberlain Esq with the writer's compliments" and "To J B McGee, this my first publication under the pseudonym "[Ernest E. Thompson]" cordially, E.T. Seton." ^Included with the book is a 1945 letter from David Randall of Scribner's, offering this same copy to a customer in Washington, D.C. Randall writes that the pamphlet "must be of excessive rarity" as Jake Blanck (author of the BIBLIOGRAPHY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE) had never seen a copy, nor had two other rare book scouts come across one in all their years. This copy later sold at auction at Parke-Bernet Galleries, for $1400 in 1977. PEEL 1640.

Autograph letter signed 'A. Einstein' to physicist Rainich discussing field theory.[Berlin]: 06-Jun-26.

" George Yuri Rainich (1886 - 1968) was a leading mathematical physicist in the early twentieth century. Rainich's research centered around general relativity and early work toward a unified field theory. In 1924, Rainich found a set of equivalent conditions for a Lorentzian manifold to admit an interpretation as an exact non-null electrovacuum solution in general relativity; these are now known as the Rainich conditions. No doubt, Einstein took great interest in Rainich's work.

Herewith Einstein discusses an aspect of electron theory and explains that any theory which postulates a solution representing two electrons at rest is unacceptable. He admits he was mistaken in his earlier views and states it would be an enormous step forward to be able to prove through differential equations the need for electrons to be identical. He concludes his latter praising Rainich for his tenacious research on the problem which he finds far more valuable than the search for instant success.

Provenance: Sold Sotheby's 2 December 1987, lot 13, $7,000).

Below follows a full transcription and English translation of the letter:

6. VI. 26.

Sehr geehrter Herr Rainich!

"1 page (290 x 225 mm), center horizontal fold, light wear and fraying to top margin and right margin; with typed envelope addressed to Rainich. "

        ANNA KARENINA

New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co, 1886. First American edition. Good +. A Good+ copy of the first translation into English. Spine end chipped/frayed off even with the text block. A medium sized damp-stain on the rear board, and about 10 leaves with small tears and creasing at the top edge, near the gutter. Presumed first issue of the book without any other titles by the same author listed, publisher's monogram on the title and with five pages of ads in the rear, starting with "Crowell's Red Line Poets," and no translations of any Russian books listed. (Biblioctopus Catalogue #49). A book with no clear consensus on bibliographical points, but our research indicates that this copy is probably right and, until now, a more convincing argument has not been offered. Tolstoy's unmatched Russian familial epic - nowhere does an author love then despise his heroine so passionately. It is considered by many authors and critics, including William Faulkner, as "the greatest novel ever written." "Anna Karenina" was originally published in parts in the "Russian Messenger" from 1873 to 1877. It first appeared in book form in 1878 with the English language translation coming out eight years later. Tolstoy himself thought that "Anna Karenina" - as opposed to "War and Peace" - was his first true novel. The book has, of course, been adapted into countless plays, radio serials, operas, ballets, and films, most recently in 2012, in a version scripted by Tom Stoppard and directed by Joe Wright. Good +.

Jo's Boys and How They Turned Out: A Sequel to Little Men [Signed]

Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1886. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, of this important Alcott novel, SIGNED BY LOUISA MAY ALCOTT on the title page -- in the first state mentioned in BAL with the closed page block bulking at 1 1/16 inches. (The second state mentioned in BAL is made of thinner paper and bulks at 1 inch.) A Sequel to Little Men, "Jo's Boys" is one of Alcott's best-known works, the others being "Little Women" and "Little Men". The three works together comprise what is generally called the Little Women series. Alcott based the character "Jo" on herself and in "Jo's Boys" Jo's children have grown up and now face real world problems and troubles. Set ten years after Little Men, the novel follows the Plumfield boys which Little Men introduced, focusing mainly on Tommy, Emil, Demi, Nat, and Dan, as well as Jo's sons Rob and Teddy, and, of course, Professor Bhaer. Others characters previously introduced in the series appear as well. Signed copies of the book are, in our experience, exceedingly scarce. The volume is mildly askew and shows some chipping to the spine ends, some fading to the front board where it meets the spine, some fading to the rear board, and wear to the board corners with a bit of rubbing through. The hinges feel as if they have been reglued, leaving some small damage to the pastedowns and each adjacent free endpaper. A Very Good copy of one of Louisa May Alcott's most important works and a highly-notable work of American Literature as well, SIGNED BY LOUISA MAY ALCOTT. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE.

Also sprach Zarathustra. Ein Buch für Alle und Keinen. In drei Theilen.

Leipzig, Fritzsch, (1886) - [text recte 1883-84]. Lex 8vo. One contemporary brown half calf with (later) gilt title label. A bit of minor wear to extremities. Vague signs of a removed book plate to verso of title-page, otherwise a very nice, clean, and fresh copy. 114; (4), 103, (1); (4), 119, (1) pp.. First edition, title-issue, of Nietzsche's main work, in which the concept of the "Superman" (or "Overman") in introduced. This is actually the first printings of these three parts, but the many remainders were sold and issued with a new title-page (with no year, but 1886). Only 45 copies of the exceedingly scarce privately printed fourth part were issued, the first trade edition of which is from 1892."These books present several historical problems but none more confusing than their publication dates. It is difficult to determine when - and in some cases, if - the books were ever released for public sale..." (Schaberg, p. 88). It is difficult to overestimate the impact of Nietzsche's magnum opus. With this work he realizes his ideal of the poet-philosopher. It is, at the same time, a towering literary achievement and the most profound inquiry in the key notions of his philosophy (the Superman, the eternal return of the same).Schaberg: 45
