[Click Below for Full Description]

Haynes, F. Jay
Saint Paul, MN: Haynes Picture Shops, 1885. Silver gelatin photograph [42 cm x 30 cm] under a gray mat and in an attractive modern wooden frame [64 cm x 51 cm] 'Haynes Yellowstone Park' blind stamped at the lower right corner. Haynes number manuscript on the reverse (27651). Brass plaque beneath image "Grey Bear - by F.J. Haynes." Image has strong contrasts. Fine. Striking image of Grey Bear who was a Crow scout with General Terry. This photograph was produced by Jack Haynes c.1927, purportedly to be sold in the Yellowstone Park stores, which the Haynes family operated. Jack Haynes produced this photograph from the negative of his father, originally generated by F. Jay Haynes c.1885. Frank J. Haynes (1853-1921) was employed by the Northern Pacific RR in 1875 to take pictures along their route from Minnesota to the West Coast for advertising and promotional purposes. From 1884 through 1915 Haynes operated a lucrative service industry in Yellowstone National Park making and selling souvenir photographs, taking pictures of tour parties, and publishing graphic souvenirs . F. Jay Haynes was known as the "Official Park Photographer." Jack Ellis Haynes (1884-1962) began working in the family photographic business at a relatively young age and toward the end of 1916 he formally bought out his father's interest in the Yellowstone photography business and was awarded sole right to produce pictorial souvenirs. An accomplished photographer in his own right, Jack operated the park concessions and Saint Paul studios under the name 'J.E. Haynes' and then 'Haynes Inc.' (1937-1945). STRICKLAND, Agnes.
London: George Bell and Sons, 1885. 8 volumes, octavo (224 x 140 mm). Contemporary calf, red morocco labels, gilt titles and floral motifs in compartments to spines, raised bands, gilt triple fillet border to covers, gilt edges and inner dentelles, top edges gilt, others uncut, pink endpapers. Partly unopened. Spines toned, covers lightly scuffed, tips rubbed and bumped, offsetting from leather turn-ins to front free endpapers, otherwise a very good set. Frontispieces and 49 plates, all with tissue guards, and vignettes to title pages. An attractive set of Strickland's Lives of the Queens of England, originally published between 1840 and 1848. While the laborious undertaking was carried out by Agnes and her sister Elizabeth, they appeared under the former's name only at Elizabeth's request. The series was widely praised and became an important landmark in the development of the biographical genre. While viewed by modern readers as overtly didactic, the Strickland sisters were "undoubtedly key figures in the development of writing on women's history, playing a role in creating a tradition of female worthies" (ODNB).

Twain, Mark
Charles L. Webster and Company., New York, 1885. Ah, Huck Finn. One yearns to say, "Just read it, who cares about all these 'points'?" But -- if only to help safeguard the collector from disappointment -- let us proceed: This is a Webster New York first edition, dated "1885" to title page. Pages moderately and evenly age-toned, but singularly clean (only a few finger smudges to margins.) It is certainly an early state, possibly not the "first state," but let those with checklists judge for themselves: This copy in original blindstamped green cloth-covered boards, with gilt author name to spine and front board, gilt initial caps to title on front board, title dropped out of gilt block to spine. A new cloth spine has been slipped under the board cloth, original green cloth spine covering then laid down -- this was a professional job and results in the book now grading a solid "very good" with solid hinges, albeit with original board corners worn and rounded. We believe the endpapers (which no longer join across the internal hinges) are the "pale peach" originals. In the list of chapter summaries on pg. 9. we're told that in Chapter VI, "Huck Decided to Leave." (Evidently later changed to "Decides," though this point is not mentioned in Blanck's Bibliography of American Literature.) The illustration captioned "Him and another man" is indexed at pg. 88, but actually appears on pg. 87 -- this indexing error constituting another "first state point." The eleventh line from the bottom of pg. 57 reads " . . . with the was . ." (later corrected to "with the saw") -- yet another first … [Click Below for Full Description]

Black cloth with red decorative borders. Gilt on spine with Greek letters 'Dantou o Paradeisos [.] Metaphrasis Konstantinou Mousourou', and gilt publisher's name in English on lower. Otherwise a very good copy. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Greek (Modern). [xiv], 334 p. 14 p. 'prologos' by Musurus. Konstantinos Mousouros, also known as Kostaki Musurus Pasha, was an Ottoman Greek diplomatic official of the Ottoman Empire who served as ambassador to Greece, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He was born in 1807 in Constantinople (Istanbul) to a distinguished Phanariote family. His brother, Pavlos Mousouros, also became a diplomat. Mousouros became the first ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1840, a position he kept until 1848. In 1847-48 he was a central figure in the events known as Mousourika (??????????), which led to his temporary recall and the breakdown of relations between the two states. On his return to Athens he survived an assassination attempt, leading to his transfer to Vienna. In 1850 he took up the post of Ottoman ambassador to the Great Britain and Ireland, which he kept for 35 consecutive years, until his retirement in 1885. TWAIN, Mark [pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne CLEMENS] (1835-1910).
New York, NY: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. [Literature] FIRST EDITION, earliest state of the cloth issue, now finely rebound in full green morocco, with the original cloth covers preserved at rear. Large octavo (22 x 18cm), pp.366. Illustrated throughout. Binding features gilt titles, and raised bands to spine, inner gilt dentelle, top edge gilt, black endpapers. With the following issue points confirming this as one of the initial cloth copies: p.9; (Ch.VI of Contents) 'Huck Decided' for 'Huck Decides'. p.13: the illustration captioned 'Him and another Man' is listed, incorrectly, as at p.88; p.57: the eleventh line from the bottom reads 'with the was' not 'with the saw' p.161: lacks the signature mark 11 at the bottom of the page. In addition, the portrait frontispiece has the tablecloth, or scarf, clearly visible. The contentious 'bulging fly' plate (p.283) was only included in publisher's leather and is therefore not pertinent to cloth copies. Internally clean, externally unmarked. A fine copy of a rare printing. Following the classic 'boy's own' adventures of the promising young gent Tom Sawyer, Twain here attempts a more mature, somewhat darker picture of a less privileged American childhood on the mighty Mississippi. Regarded by many as a cornerstone of American literature, it confronts issues such as slavery in a sympathetic yet humorously sardonic tone which belonged to Twain alone. [Attributes: First Edition]

A copy of this work was advertised at Bristol's Central Reference Library. To this article it notes that Bird infuses these etchings with a vivifying imagination. 'He restrained them from violating any probabilities by his strong feeling for the past, so it is not surprising that some of them represent not so much what may be seen as what might have been seen'. Pasted to the front pastedown is an invoice for the individual parts of this work dated 1889. With Half-titles to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Twain, Mark (Samuel L. Clemens)
Charles L. Webster and Co, New York. Octavo. This copy is the earliest state of the first edition with the March 1885 dates called for in Blanck, it has a small biofolium letter from E.W. Kemble, the illustrator dated March 18, 1930 to a Mr. Wilson of Cannondale, Connecticut who had inquired about the controversial obscene image on p.283. He goes on to say that Webster (the publisher) had all these pages removed (or at least most all) though he states some were in the hands of collectors and valued highly as rare editions though the best scholars state that the image was found only on some of the salesman's prospective copies. The offending image was not of a curved fly but an actual penis. This had been doubted previously but Merle Johnson found one in the collection of Willard S. Morse of Santa Monica and convinced him to make a photographic copy which he limited to 100 copies (McBride, p. 103) of which our copy has one laid in at page 283. In addition, our copy has all the unique issue points present as called for in Blanck such as the earliest owner inscriptions are dated March 1885 as is the case in this copy. It was owned by Lewis Campbell Millikin, an 11 year old boy who graduated from Harvard in 1896 and passed away at age 32. The following textual points are present: the title-page and page 283 are cancels (earliest states for cloth copies); all first printing points as called for in Blanck who notes that the frontispiece portrait is in the first state of three though not a priority, since it is an insert, printed separately from the sheets and added at the time of … [Click Below for Full Description]

USGS
Washington, D.C: United States Geological Survey, 1885. See item description. View items for sale Forty-nine hardback volumes of annual USGS reports from the last decade and a half of the 19th century. The books are in various degrees of wear. All are usable as "work copies" and many are ex-library. Only a few maps are missing and almost all are present present. The text blocks appear to be complete and mostly clean, although there is some rare and sporadic handwriting, usually in pencil. The boards usually are loose, but adequately attached, except in the two instances noted below. Most exteriors are well-worn, scuffed, and frayed, but the pages themselves are in fairly good shape. I've listed each of the 49 volumes below, including the "accompanying papers" that comprise each volume. Many volumes also contain a "Report of the Director" and several "administrative reports" in addition to these "accompanying papers." Most papers are illustrated and have drawings and/or plates. The set itself measures slightly more than eight linear feet and these volumes a fairly heavy. Each volumes measures about 11.5 inches in height and 8.25 inches in width. Hi, This lot is an 1885 Original Paperback Wisden. It is in Very Good Condition. It is 100% in original form which is nice to see for such an old Wisden. If it were not for the front cover edge, this Wisden would be in my own set as otherwise it is very nice indeed, the front cover has wear to the right hand side, it is quite a lot, and the glue to the reverse is coming away, otherwise it is very nice indeed, with very nice rear cover and the spine paper is immaculate. The rear cover has a line of fade/dark by the spine as shown. It is tightly bound with no issues on the hinges, Internally, nice and clean with no foxing. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Hi, This lot is an Original 1885 Wisden Paperback. In OK to Good Condition. This Wisden has dark covers which is the main downside, it is 100% original. This is a delightful 1885 Original Paperback Wisden, 22nd Edition, with facsimile spine. The covers are super, odd mark but amazing for well over 100 years old, internally it is a very bright book, the odd spot to the odd page but for 1885 it is as white as they come. Spine is of similar colour to the book, the advantage of the facsimile spine is that you can read it without fear of breaking it , plus it is cheaper than an original too. Please note lettering on the spine of Wisdens started in 1887. A super addition to any collection. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

1885. Pair of children's collages, from the first futurist exhibition 'Mishen' [i.e. The Target] showing the landscape and the flower. 11,5x19,5 cm and 18x11,5 cm. Provenance: from the collection of architect Nikolay Vinogradov (1885-1980). Both are reproduced in Anthony Parton's 'The Art and Life of Natalia Goncharova' (London, 2010). The famous Mishen exhibition took place in April and March of 1913 was organized by Mikhail Larionov. The meaning of the name was explained, that the artist considered themselves a target, in which the public is ready to aim. Alongside with Larionov and Goncharova, in exhibition participated Mikhail Le Dantu, Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Shevchenko, Marc Chagall, Kirill Zdanevich and others. For the first time ever Niko Pirosmani's works were included in the exhibition. Along with the affection of the organizers for the primitivism, some lubok prints and children's drawings entered the exhibition including these two collages. The influence of the children's art on Russian avant-garde is well-known. Alexander Shevchenko, who has supplied some of the children's drawings for the exhibition alongside with Vinogradov, have underlined the connection in his works and in his theoretical manifesto on neo-primitivism, that came out in 1913. In 1914 Alexei Kruchonykh has published a book on the children's drawings and was interested in the matter as well. E.M. Fairchild
Near Fine. Lovely, evocative 1885 watercolor of Harvard's original boathouse, proudly situated on the Cambridge side of the banks of the Charles River. Painted by E.M. Fairchild and signed, titled and dated in his hand at the lower left corner. Crisp, clean and very sharp, with several of Harvard's buildings (including Memorial Hall and its historic tower) looming in the background. The simple structures (by today's standards) seem sun-faded and appear to be made of wood. Some 20 years later, they would give way to thicker, more imposing brick structures and would become known as the Weld Boathouse (est. in 1906, still in use today). Handsomely matted and framed, the watercolor measures 11" wide x 9" tall. A nice piece of 19th century Harvard history.
