Camp Sumter, GA. [Click Below for Full Description]

View items for sale Forty-nine hardback volumes of annual USGS reports from the last decade and a half of the 19th century. The books are in various degrees of wear. I've listed each of the 49 volumes below, including the "accompanying papers" that comprise each volume. Many volumes also contain a "Report of the Director" and several "administrative reports" in addition to these "accompanying papers." Most papers are illustrated and have drawings and/or plates. 1885. VG and complete in original binding, mild bumping to corners, some spotting on the edges, previous owner label on end paper, interior very clean, extremely nice set overall. Very Nice Set of Stanley's Classic - FIRST AMERICAN EDITION - hard to find in this condition A couple similar sets for sale over $1500 - This set usually sells at auction for $1,000 Title: The Congo and the Founding of Its Free State: A Story of Work and Exploration Author: Stanley, Henry M. Published by Harper and Brothers, New York, 1885 8vo: xxvii, 528; x, 483pp. with 12 pages of ads at rear - 3 folding maps, 44 wood-engraved plates, plus other wood engravings in the text This two-volume work of exploration, history, and socio-political-economy is the result of Stanley's expedition up the Congo River in1879-84 and his attempts to re-open the interior for King Leopold of Belgium. From this journey came the establishment of the Congo State, the first free commericial state in Equatorial Africa. Henry Stanley was one of the most popular figures of the 19th Century. Adventurer, explorer and rescuer-- the public could not get enough of this romantic figure. In true Victorian style, this volume highlights his greatest achievements, his rescues of LIvingstone and Emin Pasha and his aid in establishing the Congo Free State. Sets of this important work in original cloth have become exceeding difficult to obtain. First editions are now especially elusive. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Manuscrit] Emile Zola & Léon Hennique,
[Manuscrit] Emile Zola & Léon Hennique, Jacques Damour.[1885-1887]. 28 feuillets in-4 (31*23cm environ).Exceptionnel manuscrit inédit complet de la pièce Jacques Damour, tirée de la nouvelle éponyme d'Emile Zola publiée en 1880. L'histoire raconte le retour d'un déporté à Nouméa suite à la Commune, qui apprend que sa femme, le croyant mort, s'est remariée avec le boucher Sagnard.L'histoire a retenu, jusqu'à présent, que Léon Hennique était l'unique auteur de l'adaptation théâtrale, refusée à l'Odéon par Porel, et qui fut jouée au Théâtre Libre d'Antoine, lors de la première soirée de celui-ci le 30 mars 1887. La pièce fut un succès, probablement accentué par les trois autres pièces de la soirée reçues plus froidement. Finalement, la pièce fut montée à l'Odéon pour la saison 1887 et y fut jouée à partir du 22 septembre 1887. Elle est jouée à Bruxelles, interdite à Constantinople (officiellement car parlant de la Commune mais probablement à cause de Zola. Elle a été éditée chez Charpentier dès 1887. On sait qu'à l'époque des soirées de Médan, il y a eu des tentatives de collaboration théâtrale entre Zola et Hennique. Aucune n'a abouti ni à cette époque. La découverte de ce manuscrit prouve qu'une collaboration, plus tardive, a donc abouti. C'est donc la première collaboration théâtrale aboutie connue.Le manuscrit est une remise au propre par Léon Hennique, sans rature. "... Vor wenigen Tagen erst bin ich von Italien zurückgekommen, und habe kaum alle Briefe und Schriften durchgesehen, die mich erwarteten, da Klinik und Praxis und schönes Praterwetter und italiänische Oper mich vollauf in Anspruch nahmen. (Boys' Clubs of America; David H. Armstrong) Hoover, Herbert;
David H. Armstrong (1885-1963) was national director of the Boys' Clubs of America from 1941-56. Hebert Hoover was for part of that time Chairman of the Board of the Boys' Clubs. Armstrong addressed him as "Chief" in letters to him. Hoover's 'On Growing Up' (1962) is inscribed fondly to Armstrong, very good in jacket. Hoover and Gibson, 'The Problems of Lasting Peace' (1st, 1942) is nicely inscribed to Armstrong, very good in jacket; Hall's '100 Years...' is NOT signed, but the printed dedication is to Armstrong and it came from his collection. The notes back and forth from Armstrong and Hoover are short, the most interesting being a note from Armstrong in which he tells Hoover that a Mrs. Ehrenfels is leaving a block of Standard Oil stock to the Boys' Clubs in her will, asking Hoover to send a note of appreciation to her. Hoover responds in pencil, 'I don't think I can write an obituary note to a lady that has not yet passed away. Ask Mr. Hall to pass along our joint gratification.' Marshall (a fine general, Uniontown native, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for his Marshall Plan) sends along a three sentence statement of appreciation for the Boys' Clubs, signed. Truman's typed letter from 1948 is also a general message of praise for the Boys' Clubs and their mission: 'The moral fiber of any Nation grows out of the attitudes and behavior patterns of its youth,' he writes in part. The Edgar A. Guest poem, which appears to be an original draft, is his typical cheery doggerel. Very Good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Edwin Abbott Abbott
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1885. Good - please see description. FLATLAND "A Romance of Many Dimensions" by A Square From 1885, the first American edition (and first publication in hardcover) of Edwin A. Abbott's speculative fiction classic, a narrative of life in a two-dimensional world. This copy is INSCRIBED by the author on the first page. The few copies Abbott is known to have signed were always inscribed with the same words: "Compliments of a -- ", followed by either a square, a circle or a triangle. This copy has been graced with a tall triangle. First editions are scarce, signed firsts like this almost unheard of. I have not been able to locate another signed copy for sale or in an auction in the past decade. The book's covers have condition issues, as seen in the photos, a stain on the front and a missing piece torn from the back. The binding is sound; there is the impress stamp of an unwise former owner on the title page; the text is toned with age as expected, otherwise very nice. A small volume, 4.75" X 6.75", 155 pages. Ships promptly & securely. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
