Ulysses S Grant
Charles Webster Company. GRANT, Ulysses S. Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. New York: Charles L. Webster, 1885-86. Two volumes. Octavo, original deluxe three-quarter brown morocco, raised bands, circular gilt-stamped medallions on front and rear covers, marbled endpapers and edges. Interior generally fresh with very light foxing. A handsome about-fine copy. Completed just days before his death and hailed by Mark Twain as "the most remarkable work of its kind since the Commentaries of Julius Caesar," this is the now-legendary autobiography of ULYSSES SIMPSON GRANT (1822-1885), 18th president of the United States and the Union general who led the North to victory in the Civil War. Though Grant opens with tales of his boyhood, his education at West Point, and his early military career in the Mexican-American war of the 1840s, it is Grant's intimate observations on the conduct of the Civil War, which make up the bulk of the work, that have made this required reading for history students, military strategists, and Civil War buffs alike. Along with the state of Sonora, portions of Baja California, Southern Arizona and New Mexico are also pictured. The map was assembled from mining records, U. S. Land and Coastal surveys, Sonora and Mexican Central Railway surveys, and was compiled by C. E. Herbert, civil engineer. It features natural landforms, towns, ranches, mines, coal fields, wagon roads, trails and railway lines. The major railway of the time was the "Ferro Carril de Sonora" which extends from the Arizona-Sonora border to Guaymas, Sonora in the southern portion of the state. Jones & Haskell, sailmakers
Belfast, Maine, 1885. Folio, approx. 53 pages in ink on blue paper (many blank pages at the back and occasionally interspersed), some early leaves with entries which appear faded, but were just lightly written in a fine hand; contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, very good in a small but neat and legible hand. This is the ledger of Jones & Haskell (entries after 1861 refer to the name of the business as S. B. Haskell rather than Jones & Haskell) who, based upon an examination of names by Michael Dyer of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, were sailmakers operating out of Belfast, Maine in the middle of the 19th century. The ledger opens with an alphabetical index of the ships for which sails and other work were commissioned, and each page of the ledger is headed with the name of the ship for which sails were being made, and contains the date, a brief description of the work being done, the price of said work, and assorted supplies. Over 50 ships in all are listed, including the Almira, the Blue Bell, the Cape Ann, the Empire, the Financier, the Grecian, the Henry Chase, the Lyra, the Michigan, the Pearl, the Susan and Jane, and the Waterloo, to name but a few. Typical entries detail the making of mainsails, foresails, jibs, and reparing various sails and spars, as well as retail sales ("23 yards of no. 8 duck", manila rope, halyards, rigging, grommets, cringles, etc.). One mainsail cost $102, while another cost $131; a staysail $24; and a flying jib $34.50. Altering and repairing sails cost anywhere from $4 up to $24. One interesting entry records expenses relating to outfi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mark Twain) Clemens, Samuel L
New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. First edition of Twain's masterpiece, photogravure plate of a portrait bust of Clemens by Karl Gerhardt, title-leaf a cancel with copyright notice dated 1884; illustrated captioned "Him and another Man" listed on page 88 in contents; eleventh line from bottom of page 57 reads "with the was";"5" final five on page 155 is slightly larger; page 283/284 on a stub, without additional final blank leaf, In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Housed in custom chemise and full morocco clamshell box. A very nice example. Twain initially conceived of the work as a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer that would follow Huckleberry Finn through adulthood. Beginning with a few pages he had removed from the earlier novel, Twain began work on a manuscript he originally titled Huckleberry Finn's Autobiography. Twain worked on the manuscript off and on for the next several years, ultimately abandoning his original plan of following Huck's development into adulthood. He appeared to have lost interest in the manuscript while it was in progress, and set it aside for several years. After making a trip down the Hudson River, Twain returned to his work on the novel. Upon completion, the novel's title closely paralleled its predecessor's: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). Twain composed the story in pen on notepaper between 1876 and 1883. Paul Needham, stated, "What you see is [Clemens'] attempt to move away from pure literary writing to dialect writing." For example, Twain revised the opening line of Huc … [Click Below for Full Description]

UNKNOWN
Chicago, 1885-1904. Chicago: Chicago. Fair with no dust jacket. 1885-1904. Hardcover. On offer is a wonderful journal a woman kept over a twenty-year period of her life in the late-19th century mid-west of the United States. The author of this journal is unknown. We know that she is a young woman living in Fort Wayne, Indiana as her father prepares to sell their home and head out to Missouri in 1885. This journal documents some twenty years of her life as she moves to different cities, gets married, has at least one child and deals with the challenges and vicissitudes of life on the frontier of the great plains. Her story is one of adventure, hard work, struggle, joys and sorrows. Her journeys take her from Indiana to Missouri and thence to Chicago and the Dakota Territory before returning to Indiana where she settles down in Shelbyville, IN. The journal that she kept records some outstanding historical content. There are frequent gaps in her entries and many only record the month and day, leaving out the year. However, it is clear they begin in 1885 and end in 1904. The first entry suggests that she is in her late teens as she is living at home: "I am waiting for Lee to return from town with thread to begin Lulu's white dress. Freddie is out in the yard watching the workmen. Mother is upstairs reading - I have a few moments to think ... Time rolls by so swiftly...." [June 17, 1885]. Subsequent entries suggest that her family is well-off. Indeed, there are references property lots and homes owned by either her or her family: "Saturday without a servant i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Corbin, Austin; John A. Bowman; Long Island Rail Road Company]
Riverhead, New York, 1885. The original manuscript title to a very large tract of land near Brookhaven Long Island acquired by John A. Bowman from the individual proprietors and conveyed here by Bowman in its entirety to the Long Island Improvement Company Ltd. The Long Island Improvement Company was formed by Austin Corbin, then president of the L.I. Rail Road and others in 1881. Corbin sought the land in order to develop expensive summer residences on Long Island; Bowman was acting as Corbin's agent in the acquisition of this valuable property. Austin Corbin (1827 - 1896) was an American railroad executive, plantation owner, resort operator, banker and robber baron. In Iowa, as a bank president, he engaged in mortgage scams. Later, through theft and corruption he consolidated the individual rail lines into the profitable Long Island Rail Road. He was widely despised in his day: Puck (Sept 1882) printed a caricature in which Corbin appears at a Louis XIV styled party, where he carouses with Jay Gould and other robber barons. The Abstract, a bound sml. folio volume, records that Bowman paid $5 per acre for most of the parcels in 1882, then conveyed (January of 1883) the incalculably valuable entire tract to the LI Improvement Co for $1. The Abstract volume concludes with the Suffolk County embossed seal and is signed by the Clerk at Riverhead, 1st June 1885. It includes the ownership history of each parcel, as well as a history of the town of Brookhaven from its founding.
