Mark Twain [Samuel L. Clemens]
Charles L. Webster and Company, New York, 1885. First edition, first issue of Mark Twain's masterpiece. In near fine condition with light wear to the extremities. Octavo, blue pictorial cloth. Subscribers who had already purchased Tom Sawyer, and wanted a binding to match, were invited to request a blue cloth binding on Huckleberry Finn instead of the publisher's green. This is one of those blue bindings--twenty times more rare than the green. This copy has all of the commonly identified first issue points (copies were assembled haphazardly by the printer and there is yet to be agreement among bibliographers as to the priority of many points). First issue points include page [9] with "Decided" remaining uncorrected (to "Decides"); page [13], illustration captioned "Him and another Man" listed as on page 88; page 57, 11th line from bottom reads "with the was,". Debate continues over the priority of other points of issue and state. This copy contains the following points of bibliographical interest: frontispiece portrait without cloth table cover under the bust, bearing the Heliotype Printing Co. imprint; copyright page dated 1884; page 143 with "l" missing from "Col." at top of illustration and with broken "b" in "body" on line seven; page 155 with the final 5 being slightly larger than the first two numbers"; page 161, no signature mark "11". In very good condition with light wear to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A nice example. Ernest Hemingway once declared about The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, "All modern literature comes from one bo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Little and CO. Not only an incredible set of books authored by a storied General and U.S. President, the condition is much better than others I have seen/viewed on the market. (see photos). From Wikipedia: The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant is an autobiography by Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, focused mainly on his military career during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War, and completed as he was dying of throat cancer in 1885. The two-volume set was published by Mark Twain shortly after Grant's death. Twain created a unique marketing system designed to reach millions of veterans with a patriotic appeal just as Grant's death was being mourned. Ten thousand agents canvassed the North, following a script that Twain had devised; many were veterans who dr … [Click Below for Full Description]

If it were not for the front cover edge, this Wisden would be in my own set as otherwise it is very nice indeed, the front cover has wear to the right hand side, it is quite a lot, and the glue to the reverse is coming away, otherwise it is very nice indeed, with very nice rear cover and the spine paper is immaculate. The rear cover has a line of fade/dark by the spine as shown. It is tightly bound with no issues on the hinges, Internally, nice and clean with no foxing.

Gambier-Parry, Edward
London: Kegan, Paul, Trench & Co, 1885. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" A uniquely interesting copy, from the library of Col. A.W. Muir, who as ADC to the commander of the Indian Army contingent, served prominently in the campaign to relieve Gordon, and was decorated for his actions at several of the battles described here. This copy is signed by then then-Lt. Colonel Muir in ink on the front cover, and extensively annotated in his hand in pencil thoughout, with corrections, additions, anecdotes, observations, and questions. Muir was clearly incensed at Gambier-Parry's account for a number of reasons. Muir's annotations range from contradictions to Gambier-Parry's comments about the fortifications & water supply at Suakin ("the natives of Suakin & residents prefer it to any other water & it was said to be good"), to withering commentaries on officers (regarding camels - "essential beasts of burden the English transport officers naturally unacquainted - & as they were unable to to speak to the Indian drivers they were not as useful as the officers from India"). Muir was incensed by Gambier-Parry's opening to Chapter Four -"Night Attack" - for ignoring a list of actions and resulting casualties affecting Muir's troops, with details filling half a page. Some comments make clear Muir's belief that Gambier-Parry lacked military understanding - such as his response to Gambier-Parry's questioning the use of circular redoubts ("Sentries in these small circular redoubt pill boxes could not be rushed"). Gambier-Parry leveled a very … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hi, This lot is an Original 1885 Wisden Paperback. In Very Good Condition. This Wisden is lovely, the only things to point out is that it looks like the spine has had a touch up as has a cover corner from a previous owner , other than that it is very nice. Clean covers, small dog ear to the bottom right of the front cover, minimal cover marks. Tightly bound with very clean pages inside, just the odd small spot. A super book. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

JAMES, William
James R. Osgood & Company, Boston, 1885. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the subject, the father of William and Henry James. Edited with an introduction by William James who has INSCRIBED and SIGNED the book on the front blank: "Miss Grace Norton/with affectionate regards/Wm. James." Grace Norton, sister of Charles Eliot Norton, was an expert on Montaigne and the works of other French authors. She was a frequent correspondent of both William and Henry James. Books signed by this great American psychologist and philosopher are excessively scarce. William James, brother of the noted novelist Henry James, Jr., is generally considered to be, along with Emerson, the greatest philosophic American mind. He is best known for his book VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE and his theory of Pragmatism, an advanced philosophy based on the doctrine that truth is based on experience and observation. Remnant of a newspaper clipping of Henry James, Sr.'s obituary on the front endpaper with resulting shadow to the front pastedown. Rebacked retaining most of the original spine which is now a little dull [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
