Huckleberry Finn (1885) Mark Twain FIRST EDITION With the earliest first state issue points FIRST STATE POINTS 1) Frontispiece bust with tablecloth visible and imprint of Heliotype Printing Co.; 2) p. [ix], Ch. VI reads "Huck Decided to Leave"; 2) p. 13 shows uncorrected "Him and another man" listed at p. 88 (when it actually appears on 87); 3) p. 57, line 23 reads "with the was." 4) p. 143, line 1, no "l" in "Col." and line 7, broken "b"; 5) p. 155 has 2nd "5" missing, so as to read page "15" (later copies have the second 5 there, but lower than the first 5); 6) p. 283/284 is tipped in on a stub, which means it was one of the original copies that the publisher ordered the removal of page 283, and had a replacement page 283 tipped in there. Someone who worked for the publisher defaced the illustration on page 283 to be pornographic, and this was one of the copies that had to have page 283 removed and a replacement tipped in. CONDITION REPORT: This copy has been re-backed with a new spine, retaining the original covers (corners and edges are very worn). The inner hinges are lined with linen tape, some of the pages are repaired (a few pages at beginning of book have new pages supplied with the original page laid down, with no loss of text, and several pages throughout the book have areas of mending with archival tape). Staining to pages. There are two front end papers and both are covered with pencil notes. There is one rear end paper and it also has Turner's autograph in pencil. The text block is very sound. This book is in overall good condition. Book will be packaged caref … [Click Below for Full Description]

La première édition des poèmes, excellents et cardinaux pastiches de la littérature symboliste, avait paru le mois précédent. Elle ne comportait pas de grand papier. HENRY PERKINS GODDARD
BALTIMORE MARYLAND MD: (1885). 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is a fascinating, original manuscript 1885 letter handwritten by Henry Perkins Goddard (1842-1916) an American newsman, author and Civil War Capt. of 14th CT Infantry. He was also 1st president of the Shakespeare Club of Baltimore and on familiar terms with many notable authors of the day including Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mark Twain. The 4 page autograph letter signed ink appears to read, Harry dated May 13, [18]85, Balt., to Joe makes for an interesting peek into the arts. Here is a snippet: "Joaquin Miller - the poet, was my guest during the A.G.P. reunion - several other folks disappointing us at the last minute - and the ladies found him very interesting, though Mrs. Goddard puts it well when she said 'For 24 hours he was delightful. More of him would have been tedious.' He is you know eccentric." The letter also mentions seating Miller next to Judge Phelps at dinner; Secy Boyd; making trip to New York and more. Light soiling, overall VG.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good

Engels, Friedrich (tradotto da Pasquale Martignetti)
Stabilimento Tipografico di F. De Gennaro, 1885. Prima edizione italiana. [Click Below for Full Description]

G.H. DUDLEY
Montgomery Alabama AL: (1885). 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. On offer is an interesting, original nine page manuscript letter dated July 20th 1885 handwritten cotton seed oil tycoon and president of the Union Refining Co of Montgomery G.H. Dudley to D.J. Fallis of the Merchant National Bank Cincinnati Ohio. The letter reads much like a report to the 'head office' rather than a separate corporate entity implying the state of the cotton business in the South and the important role played by Northern and Eastern banks. [We note that the corporate letterhead names a Jonathan T. Fallis as a Secretary of Union Refining Co of Montgomery and could not help wonder if there is a familial connection. Further research may find even more interesting bonds between the companies.] The 9 x 11½ inch pages are overall G+.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good+

Fitch, Louie M., translator. Original by A. Von Winterfeld. Sketches by C. E. Fitch
Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1885. Limp cloth. Leather edged. . Very Good. Oblong, 13.5 by 19 cm. 63 pp. With original pen and ink vignette illustrations throughout -- 27 in all, plus the drawing on the front cover. These are mostly of objects -- a cigar case, a notebook, a dozen oysters, wheat, a wine glass and bottle, implements for a Turkish bath, a revolver, but there are also a few human figures drawn. Part of the fun and singularity of this manuscript derives from the lengths its creator went to to make it appear as if it were in fact printed, and it is a credit to its creator(s) that they are remarkably successful in pulling off the stunt. Thus is provided the name of a publisher, "Barlow Bros.", and the only thing giving a lie to that, other than the book not having been printed, is location of Grand Rapids, known for furniture but publishing, not so much. The verso of the title page has a copyright notice, as would a printed book as well. The story is about a bored man who accidentally is given another man's overcoat at a theater. In the coat pocketbook is the stranger's notebook with his plans for the following day. So our protoganist decides to step into that man's life the upcoming day.Tucked in the front page of the book is a letter dated Dec. 3, 1926 to Mrs. Farrier a relative of Abbie McC Brown the original owner of the book, explaining that the book was being gifted as it was a special treasure of the previous owner and had been translated transcribed and illustrated by Mrs. Fitch. Cloth cover with watercolor floral illustration captioned "German Trans … [Click Below for Full Description]

San Francisco: L.M. McKenney & Co., 1885. 26,[33]-431pp., plus ten inserted leaves of advertisements, most printed on heavier paper stock. Original printed blue boards, rebacked in calf, leather labels stamped in gilt. Boards edgeworn, rear board a bit stained. Text evenly toned. Very good. A scarce directory for these remote northern California counties, and the first appearance of a general directory for most of the counties included. In the preface the publisher asserts that his agents covered over 13,000 miles to record the information provided herein. The directory is broken down by county (with a general description of each) and then by towns within each county, with a brief description of each town followed by the names and occupations of residents, in some cases noting the amount of land owned by a particular person. It is usually noted whether or not a particular town has a post or telegraph office, and other distinctive features are listed as well. The title indicates the importance placed on farmers and stock raisers in this remote region of California. The hundreds of advertisements are for businesses throughout the various counties, as well as in San Francisco. "This is the first appearance of general directories for the counties included, except Shasta and Tehama, for which it is the second and fourth, respectively....Although this directory is a late L.M. McKenney production, it is extremely significant for its inclusion of these little- known northernmost of California counties. Ainsley E HORNEY
Hammond, Indiana: The Hoosier Press, 1885. Three scarce items written and published by the "Hoosier Patriot," the nationalist sobriquet of Chicago anti-Semite, Ainsley Elgan Horney (1885-1969), through his Hoosier Press imprint based in Hammond, Indiana. Although omitted from most far right historiographies, Horney was an active propagandist in the Midwest peddling his paper, the "Hoosier Patriot" and large quantities of anti-Semitic literature. In the 1945-46 American Jewish Yearbook, Horney is characterized as a "prolific distributor of the most vicious type of hate literature." He proved to be such a nuisance that a special Illinois Senate committee was formed to investigate the anonymously sent circulars, letters and pamphlets emanating from the Hoosier Press to Illinois legislators. Horney proved to be an evasive interviewee and contempt proceedings were initiated against him after he refused to hand over his records. He did admit to the committee of being the author of the booklet that is the focus of our small collection, "The Refugee Invasion of America Through Immigration and What To Do About It," which was first published ca. 1944. Originally just 16 pp. and without the word 'Jew' in the title, in 1953 Horney collected this pamphlet and other works and published the 87-page "The Jew Refugee Invasion of America Through Immigration and What To Do About It" (anti-Semitic bibliographer, Robert Singerman, notes a pre-publication announcement in the Feb. 26, 1953 issue of "Women's Voice"). Mark Twain
"All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn." -- Ernest Hemingway. "All right, then, I'll go to hell." - Huck, upon realizing he can't get himself to give Jim up. Here we offer the holy grail of popular antiquarian firsts: the very scarce TRUE first edition, first print, of the classic American novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, published by Charles Webster and Company, New York, in 1885, and densely illustrated with E.W. Kemble's drawings, including the conjugate (uncorrected) page 283 with the notorious "curved fly" illustration. The illustration originally had a bent line in the sketch of Uncle Silas's crotch that, at a stretch, could be taken to suggest a bulge in Uncle Silas's pants at his crotch or "fly." After less than 2,500 of these illustrations were printed, an unknown printer's assistant obscenely altered the engraving plate by scratching a penis onto it. After printing an untold number of obscene illustrations, the vandalism was caught and a number of circulated copies were successfully recalled. When they burned a new plate for the illustration, they straightened the original suggestive bent line in the sketch. Few, if any, of the defaced copies exist. All subsequent printings and all cloth-bound printings feature the straightened line in the fly. According to the Bibliography of American Literature (3415) [pb.4987,] the original curved fly is only known in the rare prospectuses and a few leather bound copies, (like this one.) Other first edition points present in this book: frontispiece cropped … [Click Below for Full Description]

Daudet Alphonse 1840 1897
[Click Below for Full Description]
