        ALS. Fulda, 13. V. 1885.

1885. 8vo. 2 pp. on double leaf. Includes 8 letters, also addressed to the "Moniteur", by H. and J. Humbert. Altogether 15½ pp. Various formats. In French, to the editors of the "Moniteur de la Chance Universelle" in Vienna. - The impostor Thérèse Humbert was born in the Languedoc region of France in 1856 as Thérèse Daurignac. Soon after her wedding to Frédéric Humbert, the son of the mayor of Toulouse, she began to tell stories about a mysterious inheritance, supposedly left to her by a grateful American millionaire, one Robert Crawford. Using the promised inheritance as collateral, the family took out enormous loans which enabled the Humberts to live in Paris for two decades in splendor and extravagance. Thérèse even kept a salon in which the elegant Paris society met. Only in 1901 was a court able to expose the entire story as a fraud. When the bubble burst, the scandal rocked the French financial world, and thousands of investors and creditors were ruined - among them the parents-in-law of the painter Henri Matisse. The Humberts flew, but were arrested in Madrid the following year. Thérèse was sentenced to five years' hard labor; after her release from prison, she disappeared from history.

"Ein olympisches Spiel". [Vienna], 6-13 July 1885.

1885. Folio. 33 ff. German ms. on paper. Green cloth (c. 1950) with giltstamped cover title. Narrative of an Austrian captain stationed in Arad (now Romania) about the operation of the local brothel and their life there. Much of the lewd account is dedicated to a so-called "Olympic Festival", a staged public defloration termed "baptism", after the passing of which obscene rite the deflowered girls became full members of the house: "Nun rief die Oberpriesterin: Das Opfer sei vollbracht! - Inserted in the account of the "baptism" of fourteen-year-old Irma is a digression on Hungarian erotic tradition and superstition. - Tear in title page restored. Well-legible manuscript with numerous corrections and revisions by the author. Occasional slight finger and dust staining; traces of horizontal and vertical folds.

        ACROSS AFRICA

London George Philip & Son 1885 - The first one volume edition with the "new and original matter and corrected map". This printing includes three additional chapters not in the first printing. Illustrated with 32 plates and facsimiles, 120 woodcuts in the text and a large folding coloured map in a pocket at the end. Thick 8vo, publisher’s original dark blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine. xxviii, 569, including index. A handsome and well preserved copy, the gilt remains very bright, the cloth nice and dark with just a bit of expected aging to the corners and extremities, the hinges with just a tad of age evidence, internally very fresh and in fine clean condition, the folding map in good order. VERY SCARCE FIRST ONE VOLUME EDITION IN COLLECTOR’S CONDITION. THE FIRST EDITION WITH ADDITIONS AND THE CORRECTED MAP. After a naval career that took him to Ethiopia and the slaving areas of East Africa, Cameron was selected by the Royal Geographical Society in 1873 to go in search of Livingstone, and instructed also to make independent explorations with Livingstone’s guidance. Upon learning of Livingstone's death, Cameron’s European companions turned back but Cameron dedicated his expedition to geographical exploration of the African continent and forged ahead alone, arriving in Ujiji on Lake Tanganyika in 1874, where he found some of Livingstone’s papers and sent them back to England. Here he began his quest of exploration with his attempts to discover the "true form" of the south part of the lake, which ended up feeding into the Lukuga river. He went west from there to a town previously visited by Livingstone on the Lualaba river, which he suspected (rightly) was the main source for the River Congo but was unsuccessful in his attempts to prove it. His journeys took him further to the southwest until he reached the coast on November 28, 1875, becoming the first European to cross Equatorial Africa "from sea to sea." ACROSS AFRICA is the work for which he is best known, containing the exciting detailed account of this cross-continental journey as well as the author’s suggestions for the opening of the African continent such as utilizing the great lakes in a "Cape to Cairo" connection. Cameron spent the remainder of his life working on commercial development projects in places such as Turkey and the Persian Gulf and writing tales for the young. He also accompanied Sir Richard Burton in his West African journey of 1882 and was joint author of Burton’s TO THE GOLD COAST FOR GOLD. Cameron was killed by a fall from horseback as he returned from a hunting expedition in 1894. This is an important work. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("G. Keller"). Zürich, 23. VI. 1885.

1885. 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Lassen Sie uns keine Fehlbitte thun!" (ZB Zürich, Ms. GK 79g:192). Keller entgegnete Wittmann: "Hochverehrter Herr! (Ms. GK 79g:193). - Spuren zweifacher waagrechter Querfaltung; unbedeutende Randeinrisse in den Faltungen. Von schöner Erhaltung.

Abda` ma-kan fi suwar Salatin Al `Uthman. Album des Souverains Ottomans. Istanbul, Matba`at al-Jawaib & Garte in Leipzig, [c. 1885].

1885. Small 4to. Lithographed title page and index; 34 photo-lithogr. plates, hightlighted in gilt and red. Original red and gilt cloth. Only edition of this lavishly produced series of portraits showing the Ottoman Sultans from the 14th to the 19th century. Captioned in French and Arabic. The editor, Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq (1804-87), was born in Lebanon to an Arab Maronite family. He converted to Islam in 1860 and spent much of his later life in Istanbul as the editor of an Arab language newspaper, "El-Jawa'ib". In recent years, scholars seem to have taken a renewed interest in Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq and his role in the "nahda", or Arab renaissance of the 19th century. Several biographies have been published recognizing his struggle to modernize the Arabic language and educational system, as well as his defence of Arabic culture and language against the Turkization movement across the 19th century Ottoman Empire. As such he is considered one of the founders of modern Arabic literature and journalism. - Minor foxing to reverse of plates, otherwise in perfect condition. OCLC 15623629.

Collection of letters, postcards, telegrams, etc. to the actress, by more than 50 writers, including Johann Strauß, Hans von Wilczek, Helene Odilon, Max Devrient, Hugo Thimig, Victor Tilgner, Wilhelmine Sandrock, Hansi Niese, Adam Müller, Müller-Guttenbrunn, Francis Saville, and Franz Tewele. Various places, 1885-1907.

1885. Various formats. 182 pp. Collection of correspondence from the Nachlass of Katharina Schratt, providing a panorama of the acquaintances and society of the actress who was introduced to the court as reader to Empress Elisabeth and later gained fame as Franz Josef's mistress and confidante. Although the entire material dates from the years when her relationship to the Emperor was popular knowledge, there are naturally no explicit references to this connection in any of the letters. Similarly, we can only speculate about the nature of Miss Schratt's gift to Johann Strauß: "To be thus honoured by your kindness is more than I have deserved. I beg to say my most heartfelt thanks. Please rest assured that this support which I have received from you will accompany me on all my paths and I will always honour it as a precious good [...]" (J. Strauß, ALS, 2 pp. Vienna, 25 Dec. 1894). The letter by Hans von Wilczek to the Emperor's mistress is of especial interest, as it contains indications of her close relationship to the great Austrian explorer: "[...] I stay away from Vienna as much as possible - but when I arrived at Herrengasse at 11 last night my doorman told me that you had called at half past 10. But I did not want to call back, it already being 11 - I beg forgiveness and - don't be angry with me! Is there anything I can do? [...]". - We also learn that the popular poet Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn had written a comedy just for her, "Die lächelnde Gräfin" ("The Smiling Countess"): [...] Naturally I would be prepared to fulfil any request regarding the title role. Also, the Countess's court need not be Vienna. That way we might even get it performed at the Burgtheater. Nobody has seen the play's ms., nobody knows it exists, it entered your hands quite virginal [...]" (2 June 1905). - Her colleague Helene Odilon, one of the greatest actresses of her age, who after suffering a stroke in 1903 was put under tutelage by her grasping relatives, writes a touching plea for help: "My desperation made me think of appealing to you, my dear lady, to help me achive my human rights. I beseech you to save me! Save me - I bessech you. My physical and mental sufferings have gone on too long. As my physical condition improved, the emotional torture of tutelage grew and torments me and today is a spectre that haunts me like death [...]" (25 Dec. 1906, 6 pp.). - The collection is topped off by several ephemera from Schratt's possession, including invoices, invitations, and a bill of exchange for 170 florins, written by herself.         Conférence Africaine. Documents de Travail]

1884 -1885, Berlin - folio, printed in both, letter-press and lithographic facsimiles of handwritten text, various paginations, text in French, in a combination of letterpress and lithographic facsimiles of manuscript documents, the margins of the letterpress pages are very wide, for manuscript notes. Ex-library, old handstamps, bound in contemporary ½ morocco and marbled boards, binding worn, front board detached but present, portion of back-strip lacking, text is very clean. There is a printed list of the documents contained in the volume at the front, the volume does not include the first and fifth documents on that list, however, contemporary manuscript notes in French indicate that they were never included in the volume, and that the text was utilized in other documents. The Conference produced ¿The General Act of the Conference of Berlin,¿ which in essence constituted the framework for the conquest of Africa. (The present volume contains drafts of the Act and various resolutions concerning it). The General Act established the ¿conventional basin of the Congo¿ (larger than its geographical basin) and opened it to European free trade, made it neutral in times of war, and declared support for efforts to end the slave trade by African and Islamic powers. Because of this point Joseph Conrad sarcastically referred to the Berlin Conference as the ¿International Society for the Suppression of Savage Customs¿ in his novella Heart of Darkness. The most important consequence of the Berlin Act was the reduction of tensions that had resulted from the French explorations in the Congo basin (Savorgnan de Brazza, 1876-1877), the establishment of Belgian posts in the Congo (1879-1884), the French invasion of Tunisia (1881), and the British takeover of Egypt (1882). The representatives agreed, in essence, that rivalries over African territory were not serious enough to justify a war between European nations. Among the provisions of the Berlin Act were: The principle of the freedom of navigation was established on the Niger and Congo Rivers. The limits of the Portuguese claims in Angola and Mozambique were defined, and French claims along the Congo River were recognized. King Leopold¿s ¿International Association of the Congo¿ was recognized as the de facto government of the Congo basin, and the territory was renamed ¿The Congo Free State.¿ In the long run the Berlin Conference stimulated the ¿Scramble for Africa¿ by establishing rules for the recognition of European claims. After signing the Berlin Act, a European nation could no longer simply raise its flag on the African coast and claim everything that lay behind it in the hinterland. A European colonial power had to adopt the ¿Principle of Effective Occupation,¿ by physically occupying whatever it claimed with troops, missionaries, merchants, railroads, forts and buildings. Within a few years Africa, with the exception of a few areas, was essentially divided up amongst the European powers. OCLC locates one copy only of these working documents. (Boston University). Rare British parliamentary papers and correspondence with local agents on the slave trade, including an admiralty report from Bushire that "upwards of fifty freshly imported Africans landed and [were] sold at Debay [Dubai]" in November 1884, in violation of the existing engagements and treaties with the Sheikhs of the Gulf coast (p. 77). Commander V. Anson investigates and soon thereafter reports to Vice-Admiral Sir W. Hewett: "We arrived of Debai, on the Arab Coast, at 2 P.M. on the 27th [of November]. After some delay the Sheikh of that place [Hushur bin Maktoum, ruler of Dubai] surrendered seventeen slaves who had been recently landed in contravention of Treaty [...] Having embarked the British Agent at Shargah [Sharjah], we proceeded on the 28th, and recovered five more slaves at the different towns belonging to the Arab Trucial Chiefs" (p. 78).         [Sushchnosti sotsializma d-ra A. Sheffle. i.e. The Quintessence of Socialism]. [N. p., 1880s].

1885. [92 pp.] 175:113 mm. Handwritten brochure, quires (sections) sewn together. Paper with watermarks (Uglich manufacture #6), ink. Foxing, quires are separated from each other, a tear and soiling of the last page. The text of the brochure is translated from the eighth edition (Gotha: F.A. Perthes, 1885) as it stated on the first page. The brochure contains nine chapters. Every leaf is numbered starting from the first chapter (44 numbered pages). With introduction to the first and the second editions. This manuscript book was created by Russian underground Marxists as they tried to spread their ideas. This kind of books were banned in the country at the time and a person cought distributing them would had faced arrest. This is an interesting historical evidence of the most revolutionary time in Russian history. The Quintessence of Socialism by a German economist Albert Schäffle (1831-1903) was mostly interpreted as an unbiased presentation of socialism but outside of Germany it was used as a basic introduction to socialism. It was a strictly scientific yet popular and easy to understand account of socialism. Among other things the author analyzes socialist idea of the public organization of production and the role of collective property in the process of production and sharing. It's not surprising that the book attracted a lot of attention of Social Democrats because Schäffle based a lot of his brief exposition of socialist economics on the theories of Marx. He concentrated solely upon economic theory and inadvertently emasculated Marxism of its political and truly revolutionary implications. Marx responded negatively to Schäffle's work claiming he had never built a socialist system in his works and called Schäffle's views on socialism fantasies but these fantasies became very popular among certain groups of revolutionaries including Narodnaya Volya in Russia. Schäffle's book was widely read by interested Social Democrats cannot be doubted, for it was admirably brief, clearly written, and easily available. Obviuosly the Social Democrats could not accept Schäffle without some modifications. Nevertheless, some of them imbibed a sufficient dosage to set up a tension within the movement between the traditional democratic-political principles and what they took to be their socialist-economic principles as defined by Schäffle. For example, a member of Land and Liberty group (Zemlya i Volya) Osip Aptekman wrote in his memoirs: ''[...] Marx's Zur Kritik and The Quintessence of Socialism by Schäffle were going the rounds. Plekhanov importuned me to scrutinize these two books. I constantly read it outloud and translated while Plekhanov was catching it on the fly and capturing it in his memory'' (Aptekman, O. Obshchestvo Zemlya i Volya of 1870s). First Russian translation was published in Geneva in 1881 (from the 7th German edition). In 1906 were published first Russian editions in Odessa and St. Petersburg.

Collegè de France, Paris.", Briefmarken, Poststempel v. 3.9.85. Extreme rare Offprint! - - "In 1873, Bizzozero even hinted at the role exerted against infection by connective reticular phagocytes of lymph nodes. In a study on the structure of lymphatic glands, he stated that reticular cells could ingest infective particles that were carried by the lymphatic liquid. He added that: ".this fact is, perhaps, the cause of the stoppage of some infections to the lymphatic glands which are connected to the part covered by the infection through the lymphatic vessels" *). So, the mechanism of phagocytosis as a biological phenomenon was precisely described by Bizzozero in the period between 1871 and 1873, more than 10 years before Elie Metchnikoff described it. However, if we consider a structured 'theory' or 'doctrine' of phagocytosis; that is, a theory or doctrine of immunity, this implies a mechanism of defence from external biological aggression that could be fully proposed only after the microbiological discoveries of Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch. And this concept was structured and articulated by Metchnikoff from 1882 onwards. However, the great Russian founder of immunology never sought credit for being the first to describe the phenomenon of phagocytosis, and in his masterpiece Immunity in Infective Diseases gave full credit to Bizzozero for having " .first recognized . an amoeboid cell which had ingested pus corpuscles".         Collection of original vintage photographs. Bábolna, c. 1885.

1885. 11 vintage photo prints (ca. 90 x 120 mm, but one 105 x 170 mm) on backing cardboard (20 x 25 cm). Highly uncommon photographs of Arabian horses (all individually captioned) at the famous Bábolna stud in Hungary, the principal stud for producing the best horses for the Austro-Hungarian military in the 19th century. The "Bábolna Nemzeti Ménesbirtok" (Bábolna National Stud) was founded by Emperor Joseph II in 1789. In 1816 it was decreed that henceforth only Arabian stallions should be used for stud service - a policy that raised the quality of the Austrian cavalry's horses to a famous level and necessitated the frequent introduction of new pure-bred Arabian stallions from the Middle East. One of the greatest commanders and stud-masters of Bábolna, Mihály Fadlallah el Hedad, hailed from Syria. - The photos show portraits of the horses Sechun, Nadir, Tahita, Nasira, Celeby, Dzerid, El Hafi, El Denedzi, Hiläl, Riat, as well as a larger group portrait showing several of the horses with their Arabian and Austro-Hungarian trainers. Some slight staining to backboards, but altogether well-preserved. Extremely rare.

1885. first edition. First American Edition of ?Huckleberry Finn,? First PrintingA Near Fine and Untouched CopyTWAIN, Mark. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer?s Comrade). With one hundred and seventy-four illustrations. New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885.First American edition, with the following ?traditional? bibliographical points: the title-page is a cancel, with the copyright notice dated 1884 (BAL second state, with the first state only noted in publisher?s prospectuses and advanced sheets); p. [13], the illustration captioned ?Him and another Man? is incorrectly listed as at p. 88 (BAL first state); p. 57, the eleventh line from the bottom reads ?with the was? instead of ?with the saw? (BAL first state); p. 283 is a cancel, with the engraving redone and the line indicating the fly on Silas Phelps?s trousers a straight vertical line (BAL third state, the earliest known to appear in cloth-bound copies of the book); p. 155, the final ?5? in the pagination is missing (BAL first state); the frontispiece portrait has the imprint of the Heliotype Printing Co. and the tablecloth, or scarf, on which the bust rests not visible (BAL second state). Octavo (8 7/16 x 6 9/16 inches; 210 x 167 mm.). 366, [2, blank] pp. Inserted frontispiece portrait and wood-engraved text illustrations. Complete with the final blank leaf (signature 23/8).Original dark green cloth pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt and black on front cover and spine. Original pale peach endpapers. The absolute minimum of rubbing to corners and spine extremities. Tiny tear (1/4 inch) in the lower blank margin of leaf 7/1 (pp. 97/98). Occasional very minor marginal soiling. An exceptionally bright and totally untouched copy. Chemised in a quarter olive morocco over marbled boards slipcase.?In November [1884], after the first printing was finished and before the second printing of 10,000 copies was begun (the third printing of another 10,000 copies did not follow until March, 1885), the plates were corrected to reflect three changes in the text: at page 13 the erroneous page reference ?88? was changed to ?87?; at page 57 the misprint ?with the was? was corrected to ?with the saw?; and at page 9 [the ?Contents? leaf] the misprint ?Decided? was corrected to ?Decides.? This last change was overlooked by Johnson, BAL, and every other bibliographer, but was noted by the Iowa-Berkeley editors of HUCK FINN. Because these three changes are documented as having been made between the first and second printings, they can absolutely distinguish the first and second printing sheets from each other. While mixing of sheets can sometimes occur during the collating or binding process, no copy of HUCK FINN has been found that does not have all three of these changes present, or all three absent. That strongly suggests that no mixing of first and second printing sheets took place. Unlike those changes made between the two printings, the corrections made to the plates during the course of the first printing are of no use in distinguishing between the two printings?By early November, the sheets of HUCK FINN were being forwarded for binding, and within a week or two it was discovered that the illustration at page 283 had been altered in the master plate to make it appear as if Uncle Silas was exposing his penis?By the time the ribald alteration (that's BAL's term, not mine) was discovered, the first printing was finished, and some sheets may have been in bindings, some sheets had been gathered and sewn, and some were collated but not yet sewn?No copies of the book, in cloth or in leather, show clear evidence of having had page 283 cancelled after binding. All surviving copies that contain the cancelled page, when closely examined, show evidence that the cancel took place after the sheets were sewn, but before they were nipped and trimmed for casing into the binding? In addition to the obscene illustration, a change was made in the plate for the copyright page, correcting the copyright date from 1885 to 1884. No copies of the book exist with the 1885 copyright page in uncancelled state, including copies in leather?Readers familiar with the traditional bibliographical ?points? of HUCK FINN may object that I have dismissed those ?points? that involve damaged plates (the missing ?l? in the illustration at page 143 that was replaced at some point; the three states of page 155 involving the replacement of the final ?5?; the signature mark at page 161 that was missing, but eventually replaced). Because these resulted from damage to the plates at various points within the course of the first printing, and repairs could have been made to some plates while not to others, they are of no significance in determining the sequence of the printing of the sheets? All of these occur at random in relation to each other within copies of the first printing, a strong indicator of the use of multiple plates, and possibly mixed sheets within the collating process. Finally, the signature mark at page 161 has never been found in a copy of the first or second printing, so it hardly warrants discussion? (See Kevin MacDonnell, ?Huck Finn among the Issue-Mongers,? Firsts The Book Collector?s Magazine, Volume 8, Number 9 (September 1998), pp. 28-35).BAL 3415. Grolier, 100 American, 87. Johnson, Twain, pp. 43-50. McBride, pp. 92-112.

PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF U S GRANT

New York: Charles L. Webster, 1885, 1886. 2 volumes. First edition. With 49 maps and illustrations, including a portrait frontispiece and folding manuscript facsimile. Also with the dedication from Grant in holograph facsimile. 8vo, publisher’s original green cloth lettered in gilt and with a gilt medallion on the upper covers, with floral endpapers. 584; 647, index pp. A very nice and honest set, handsome and quite well preserved, internally quite clean and fresh, the green cloth still bright and unfaded with bright gilt, one end leaf and pastedown with separation restored in Vol. 2,, a little rubbing to the cloth along the shoulders and extremities, very minor evidence of an old stain at the top margin of the preliminaries only of Vol. 1. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF ‘THE FINEST MEMOIRS OF WAR EVER PENNED’. An important historical memoir of the Civil War, arguably the most important, and the best thing that Grant ever wrote. General Norman Schwartzkopf has recently called this the finest memoir of war experiences that has ever been penned. Collectible copies of these books are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. The earliest days of the Civil War were a hard lesson in hubris for the Union Army. After the appointment of Grant to overall command of the Union forces, the war would quickly turn to their favor. Probably the most important book on the American Civil War, and in many respects a masterpiece of American literature. David Eicher"s useful summary includes this fine judgment: "Grant’s MEMOIRS comprise one of the most valuable writings by a military commander in history . . . The work is genuinely that of the commander. As such, it is valuable in its scope, its plain and clear analysis and language, and its broad conclusions about the conduct of the war. "In the years following the war Grant would move into the political arena, even against his best judgment and would, with great public acclaim be elected President of United States for two full terms.
