        Pool of Bethesda, Jerusalem, Israel.

      c. 1885 - Large albumen print. Good tonal range and in fair condition, light spotting in upper margin. 28.5 x 38 cm. The Pool of Bethesda is a pool of water in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem, on the path of the Beth Zeta Valley. Until the 19th century, there was no evidence outside of the second Book of Kings of the Old Testament and John's Gospel in the New Testament, for the existence of this pool. However, in the 19th century, archaeologists discovered the remains of a pool that fitted with both descriptions. The pool according the Old Testament, was built as a reservoir for rain water. According to the New Testament it was said to have healing properties and people would travel there to have their illnesses cured. In the late 19th century, the French constructed the Church of Saint Anne at the south east corner of the site in honour of Anne, Mary's mother. This photograph is one of the earliest pictures of the sight taken after its' discovery.

        King Solomon's Mines

London: Cassell & Co, 1885. First edition, first issue. Very Good. A Very Good copy with all first issue points: p.10 - "Bamamgwato"; p.122 3rd line up - "let twins to live"; p.307 footnote, second to last line - "wrod." Ads dated 5 G. 8.85. Recased in the original binding, with the spine darkened and some spotting and soiling to the cloth. Tear to the frontis map expertly repaired. Light to moderate foxing, mostly at the prelims. One of approximately 1000 copies of the first issue and quite scarce in the original cloth. H. Rider Haggard's influential Victorian adventure tale. King Solomon's Mines follows the adventure of Sir Allan Quatermain, who ends up discovering the lost civilization of Kukuanaland. (Indeed, the book is thought to have been the inspiration for the entire genre of "Lost World" science fiction -- and influenced writers as diverse as HP Lovecraft and Michael Crichton.) Even though Haggard was inspired to write the book because of a wager with his brother - and finished it in less than four months - King Solomon's Mines would prove to be a best seller. "Mr.Haggard has little prestige on this side of the water, but it will be unjust if "King Solomon's Mines" does not bring him renown." (Contemporary New York Times Book Review). Very Good.

Report on the Scientific Results of the Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger

1885 - THOMSON, C. Wyville. Report on the Scientific Results of the Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger During the Years 1873-76. London: Longmans & Co., et al., 1885., 1882. Two volumes bound in three. Large quarto, contemporary full dark green morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Housed in custom slipcases. $8000.First edition of the illustrated Narrative section of the report on the Challenger""a voyage "without parallel in the history of scientific research" (Britannica)""with 37 full-page photographic plates (two folding panoramas), 14 fine full-page chromolithographs, 66 charts and diagrams (20 folding), large folding map and numerous in-text wood engravings, handsomely bound by Donnelley. The binder's own copy, with his bookplates.Sailing from Portsmouth in December 1872, the Challenger spent a year criss-crossing the Atlantic to gather information on largely unexplored island chains such as the Azores, the Cape Verde Islands and the Bermudas. In early 1874 she became the first steamship to cross the Antarctic Circle. The second portion of the voyage was spent researching the Pacific's western and northern reaches. The present section of the work relates the day-to-day trials the crew faced as well as specifically charting the vessel's course. Especially notable are the early photographic prints of some of the Earth's more remote regions, including striking images of antarctic icebergs and a penguin rook on Inaccessible Island. The full report of the voyage, issued in 40 volumes from 1880 to 1895, endures as one of the great modern contributions to science and cartography. It was "the first Antarctic expedition whose aims were solely scientific," and it "founded the discipline of oceanography" (Conrad, 67). Without the large folding map showing the Challenger's route. Volume II published before Volume I, as explained in a note from the publisher tipped to Volume II's Table of Contents. In 1877, Thomson's "Preliminary Account" of the expedition preceded the present work (Conrad, 70; Fitzgerald Collection 703). Small morocco bookplates of Neva and (Clarence) Guy Littell; Guy Littell was president of the R.R. Donnelley & Sons binding company, which bound these volumes (bindery tickets tipped in).Closed tear to editorial slip tipped into Volume I. Plates and text generally clean. Spines lightly rubbed and uniformly toned to brown. A very nearly fine set, handsomely bound. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Claremont, N.H.: Printed and Published by Simeon Ide, 1885. 8,[2],137pp. 16mo. Original stiff printed wrappers bearing the title "Scraps of California History, 'Re-Written' by One of Its Early Pioneers." Spine chipped and worn, hinges reinforced, wraps bit soiled, minor tear in fore-edge of two leaves just touching a couple letters of text in one leaf, else very good. In a half morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. A very rare work, accorded a "b" rating by Howes, and one of the few publications to deal exclusively with the Bear Flag revolt, an important episode in the history of California. William Brown Ide's brother, Simeon Ide edited and printed this book on a small hand press when well into his eighties, such was his determination to "set the record straight" on William's derring-do in the Bear Flag revolt. Simeon personally compiled, proofed, printed, made plates and forms, and folded and gathered the sheets in his New Hampshire home, continuing to produce variations for family members and subscribers for the remainder of his life. The work is an essential document of the events of the conquest of California. The original wrappers are extremely rare, and interestingly the cover notes this booklet was "prepared for free distribution," such was Simeon Ide's zeal. This edition includes a new preface and some new material covering Ide's tour with Fremont and omits the Ide family sketch which constituted the first 87 pages of the first edition. A rare and important piece of Californiana. HOWES I5, "b." COWAN, p.301. STREETER SALE 2993. TUTOROW 3467.

        Bits of Old China

London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., 1885. 6/25/16. viii, 280, (44) pp. More recollections of the China Trade by the author of ?The Fan Kwae at Canton.? Hunter spent all his adult life in the trade and was in Canton during the Opium wars. He ultimately married a Chinese woman. His writings are absolutely authentic, and his narrative takes the reader down streets and alleys, into the depths of Canton and the heart of Chinese culture in the years surrounding the first opium war. As a young man Hunter worked in the American factory in Canton. Robert Bennett Forbes, the famous opium skipper, managed the American enterprise during his second tour in Canton, and saw the Americans through the perilous first days of the Opium War. He speaks fondly of Hunter in his memoirs. Forbes has inscribed this copy to a Mr. Burlinghame. A wonderful association. Laid in is a strip of red tissue paper with Chinese characters printed on it and the inspription "C.M. Teh" written beneath it. Bound in original cloth with decorated cover and gold lettering. Narrow strip cut from the top of the title page, else a very good copy of a scarce and important book on the China Trade.

Hi, This lot is an 1885 Original Paperback Wisden. It has the Original Spine Paper without any Restoration. It is in Very Good Condition for the year and was in my set for a long time. The spine paper is excellent, just some minimal wear the corners. The book is very tightly bound, the covers are nice and bright and clean, the only downside is an inch crack to the spine paper but the book is still very tightly bound. Internally it is very nice and clean and hasn't been opened for a while. Minimal spotting. Tiny rounding of cover corners with minor thumbing. No restoration and a great Wisden.

Was sagst Du dazu? [...]" (Prag, 31. I. 1887). (o. O., 9. II. 1888).
