The Congo and the founding of its free state: a story of work and exploration.

London Sampson Low 1885 - First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., xxvii, 528; x, 483pp., 2 large maps in pockets at end of volumes, 3 further folding maps, 44 full-page engraved plates, including frontispieces, numerous text illustrations throughout, contemporary half calf gilt, marbled boards, red and green labels, light wear, an excellent set. The foundation of the Congo Free State. In 1879 Stanley went to the Congo after a meeting with King Leopold to explore the possibilities of development of the region. He secured for the Belgian Association Internationale the whole south bank of the River Congo and the north and west shores as well beyond the confluence with the Mobangi. He set up trading posts, etc. and established treaties with the local rulers and went on steadily with his political and pioneering work along the thousand miles of the navigable Congo from Stanley Pool to Stanley Falls, laying the foundations of that vast administrative system, extending from the Atlantic to the great lakes, and from the Sudan to Barotseland, which became the Congo State. Because he taught his men how to wield a sledgehammer effectively, Stanley received the title of Bula Matari, "breaker of rocks," from the Vivi chiefs. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade)

New York: Charles L. Webster and Company,, 1885. With one hundred and seventy-four illustrations. Square octavo. Original green pictorial cloth blocked in black and gilt, titles to spine and front cover in gold and black. Housed in a custom green quarter morocco and cloth pull-off box. Photogravure frontispiece of Karl Gerhardt's portrait bust of Clemens, 173 text illustrations after E. W. Kemble. Small label pasted to front free endpaper. A little wear to spine ends and tips, front hinge cracked but holding. An excellent copy. First American edition, first printing. The traditional issue points on this book have recently been persuasively reassessed. The first printing of 30,000 copies was done using electrotype plates, produced simultaneously on different presses, hence minor variations within the first printing due to damaged plates. Only three substantive changes were introduced after the first printing: at p. 13 the erroneous page reference "88" was changed to "87"; at p. 57, 11 lines from the bottom the misprint "with the was" was corrected to "with the saw"; and at p. 9 the misprint "Decided" was corrected to "Decides" (this last change overlooked by Johnson, Blanck et al.). These are the only points to distinguish between the first two printings, and our copy has all three in first state. At some stage it was realised that the Uncle Silas illustration on p. 283 had been mischievously tampered with. In this copy, the illustration is in second state. The frontispiece is in the first state with the table cloth visible and unsigned on the finished edge of the bust, but this was separately printed and inserted in copies at random, and so has no bearing on priority. Copies were issued in leather bindings (sheep or three-quarters morocco), in blue cloth for those who wanted it uniform with Tom Sawyer and, as here, in green cloth. There is no priority between them: all were first available to the public on the same day in February 1885. Laid in is a copy of the suppressed "priapic" plate, from an edition of 100 copies produced by Merle Johnson from the original leaf in the collection of Willard S. Morse.

Autograph Musical Quotation Signed and Dated, (Robert, 1815-1892, German Song Composer)

1885 - the first four bars of an 'Allegro' on two staves in 4/4 time, a simple, lyrical G major tune and accompaniment laid out for piano, 1 side 6½" x 11" music paper, Halle, 30th October small closed tear in blank bottom margin without loss Franz brought out his first book of songs in 1843, and Schumann hailed them as 'in the new, noble style'. They brought him success and musical posts in his native city, but a nervous malady, including deafness, had already begun to set in. By 1868 he became too ill to work, and Liszt, Joachim and others raised money to provide for his needs. He was a great lover of Bach and Handel, (like him, a native of Halle), editing their great choral works, and successfully searching for and finding unknown Bach manuscripts, which in one instance were being used to protect new trees.

Life and Works of Charlotte Bronte and Her Sisters

Smith, Elder, & Co, 1885. Seven volumes, complete Octavo Illustrated in each volume by E. M. Wimperis, a friend of the Brontes three-quarter red morocco over red marbled boards, spine with extra gilt and raised bands, red and green morocco gilt lettered spine labels, all edges marbled, marbeld endpapers The volumes are: Jane Eyre; Shirley; Villette; The Professor : with Poems; Wuthering Heights; Wildfell Hall and Life of Charlotte Bronte by Mrs. Gaskell. Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855)  and her sisters Emily Bronte (1818-1848) and Anne Bronte (1820-1849) have charmed, inspired, and even shocked readers from the Victorian age to the present.  Raised in Haworth, Yorkshire, the three sisters produced such classics as Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.  Influenced by British Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Scott, and Byron, the Brontes produced a cast of unforgettable characters such as the devoted governess, Jane Eyre, and the lovers, Heathcliff, Cathy, and Hareton.  The Bronte Family website explores the lives, literature, and art of these important Victorian women writers. The Brontës are the world's most famous literary family and Haworth Parsonage, now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, was their home from 1820 to 1861.  Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë were the authors of some of the best-loved books in the English language. Charlotte's novel 'Jane Eyre' (1847), Emily's 'Wuthering Heights' (1847), and Anne's 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' (1848) were written in this house over a hundred and fifty years ago, yet their power still moves readers today. To find two writers of genius in one family would be rare, but to find several writers in one household is unique in the history of literature. Charlotte and Emily are ranked among the world's greatest novelists; Anne is a powerful underrated author, and both their father, the Revd. Patrick Brontë, and brother Branwell also saw their own works in print. The Brontës, published under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, were acknowledged at the time for their directness and powerful emotional energy, qualities which were sometimes interpreted by the critics as 'coarse' and 'brutal'. - Bronte Society Some rubbing and scuffing to edges and tips, bookplate on front pastdowns, else fine

Notable South Australians; or, Colonists - Past and Present.

Adelaide: Carey, Page & Co. 1885. Octavo, three original photograph portraits of Sir.W.C.F. Robinson, Capt. S.W.Sweet and George Loyau; lithograph portraits & frontispiece and woodcut illustrated advertisements at the end; purple cloth. Extra-illustrated with two photographic portraits, and inscribed by the author to the South Australian pastoralist John Howard Angas.Loyau was a journalist and author who arrived in Sydney in 1853, and spent several years in the inland as a jack-of-all-trades, before starting a long career in the newspapers around 1860. He moved to Adelaide in 1877, and his works are now regarded as good sources of local history.Known as a bit of a bibliographical curiosity, this is one of a handful of copies of this work with extra photographs, although none of these extra-illustrated copies seem to have the same suite of portraits. The edition was published with the photograph of the author Loyau, but the present copy also has photographs of Sir William Robinson, Governor of Western Australia, and of the naval officer and photographer Captain Samuel W. Sweet. The copy in the National Library described by Holden has three extra portraits (that of Robinson, but also two more of Whinham and Squarise). All of the photographs depict men whose biographies are included in the book, but it is still not exactly clear what Loyau had in mind when he was preparing these special presentation copies. Faded at the spine.

Leipzig, Brockhaus, 1885 - XII, 638 S., 1 Bl. (Anzeige). 2 Tafeln in Xylographie. - "Arminus [Hermann] Vambery (1832 - 1913) was especially attracted by the literature and culture of Turkey, and in 1854 he was enabled, through the assistance of Baron Joseph Eötvös, to go to Constantinople. There he became a private tutor, and thus entered the household of usain Da`im Pasha, later becoming private secretary to Fuad Pasha. About this time he was elected a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in recognition of his translations of Turkish historians. Returning to Budapest in 1861, he received a stipend of a thousand florins from the academy, and in the fall of the same year, disguised as a Sunnite dervish, and under the name of Rashid Effendi, he set out from Constantinople. His route lay from Trebizond to Teheran, via Erzerum, Tabriz, Zenjan, and Kazvin. He then went to Shiraz, through Ispahan, and in June, 1863, he reached Khiva, whence he went by way of Bokhara and Samarcand to Herat, returning through Meshed to Teheran and Trebizond. This was the first journey of its kind undertaken by a European; and since it was necessary to avoid suspicion, Vámbéry could not take even fragmentary notes, except by stealth. He returned to Europe in 1864, and received in the next year the appointment of professor of Oriental languages in the University of Budapest, retiring therefrom in 1905. Vámbéry became known also as a publicist, zealously defending the English policy in the East as against that of the Russians" (Jewish Encyclopedia). - Gebräunt. - *** Matthäus TRUPPE * Stubenberggasse 7 * A-8010 GRAZ *** - Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 1000 Gr.-8°.         Erklärung der Regel des hl. Vaters Benedikt.

Um 1885/1890. - 2 Bände. 4° (27.3 x 21.5 cm). 1 Bl., 191 SS. u. 161 unpag. Bll. Handschrift in deutscher Kurrent (regelmässiger Schriftzug von geübter Hand; Tinte, Spitzfeder) in Bleistift-Satzspiegel und -Linierung a. teilw. unterschiedlichem Papier (gestrichen; grösstenteils weiss, partiell chamois-getönt). HLdr.-Handeinbände d.Zt. (schwarz; unterschiedlich min. bestossen u. etwas berieben) mit vergold. Rückentitel u. Ln.-Deckelbezug (lamin., feine Galuchatstruktur). Seiten unterschiedlich etwas stockfleckig. Gesamthaft weitgehend sauberes, recht gutes Exemplar (Studienobjekt) / UNIKAT. Bd. 2 im Titel bez.: Fr. Athanas. - Einige Titel- u. Textstellen in Latein. - Mit grösster Wahrscheinlichkeit geschrieben von P. Athanas Staub (Stans NW 1864-1955) von Menzingen, Kt. Zug. Profess 1885, Priester 1891. Aufgeführt werden u.a. So beginnt in Bd. (p. 17). - Provenienz: Ausgeschiedenes Exemplar der Stiftsbibliothek Einsiedeln (o. Stempel). -- NETTOGEWICHT / Net weight / Poids 2.2 kg Sprache: de, la [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Das Kapital. Kritik der politischen Oekonomie.

Hamburg: Otto Meissner,, 1885. Zweiter Band. Buch II: Der Cirkulationsprocess des Kapitals. Herausgeben von Friedrich Engels. Octavo (213 x 133 mm), pp. xxvii, [1], 526 + imprint leaf. Recent half green morocco and marbled boards, spine ruled and decorated gilt in compartments, direct lettered gilt, marbled endpapers. German school library stamp and shelf number on title page. Lower margin with small damp mark to final few leaves; a very good copy. First edition of the second volume of Das Kapital, edited from Marx's manuscripts by Friedrich Engels. "Marx himself modestly described Das Kapital as a continuation of his Zur Kritik de politischen Oekonomie, 1859. It was in fact the summation of his quarter of a century's economic studies, mostly in the Reading Room of the British Museum. The Athenaeum reviewer of the first English translation (1887) later wrote: 'Under the guise of a critical analysis of capital, Karl Marx's work is principally a polemic against capitalists and the capitalist mode of production, and it is this polemical tone which is its chief charm'. The historical-polemical passages, with their formidable documentation from British official sources, have remained memorable; and, as Marx (a chronic furunculosis victim) wrote to Engels while the volume was still in the press, 'I hope the bourgeoisie will remember my carbuncles all the rest of their lives' ?" (PMM). "The history of the twentieth century is Marx's legacy. Stalin, Mao, Che, Castro?the icons and monsters of the modern age have all presented themselves as his heirs. Whether he would recognise them as such is quite another matter ? Nevertheless, within one hundred years of his death half the world's population was ruled by governments that professed Marxism to be their guiding faith. His ideas have transformed the study of economics, history, geography, sociology and literature. Not since Jesus Christ has an obscure pauper inspired such global devotion?or been so calamitously misinterpreted." (Francis Wheen, in his introduction to Karl Marx, 1999).

"These extracts from Du Pont's journal and letters, privately printed for his family by his wife after his death, are a valuable and almost unknown account of U.S. Naval operations in the Pacific and Gulf of California during the Mexican War.  After conveying Fremont and his battalion from Monterey to San Diego and participating in the taking of San Blas, DuPont entered the Gulf of California, seized La Paz, and at Guaymas burned the Mexican fleet. Within a few months he had cleared the Gulf, and in 1847 aided Commodore Shubrick in the occupation of Mazatlan, and later led his troops to the rescue of the American forces at Mission San Jose" - Streeter.  "The richest mass of first-hand source material extant on the conquest of California" - Eberstadt.  "Even more important than Du Pont's detailed and meticulous account of his own actions is his careful recording of the movements of, and communications with, other important figures with whom he was in almost constant contact" - Hill.  Only fifty copies were printed for the family.         Alastor; or, the Spirit of Solitude: and Other Poems

London: Reeves and Turner, and B. Dobell,, 1885. A facsimile reprint of the original edition, first published in 1816. Octavo. Original tan buckram, paper title label to spine. Very slight rubbing to ends and corners, front hinge just starting at the ends, internally fresh and uncut, withal an excellent copy. First edition thus, signed by Bertram Dobell on the front free endpaper (conceivably denoting this as his retained copy), one of the scarce 50 copies on Whatman's Hand-made Paper from a limited edition restricted to 404 copies (4 were on vellum, and 350 copies were on toned paper). This facsimile was issued as number 3 in the second series of the publications of The Shelley Society, at the initiative of literary scholar and bookseller Bertram Dobell (1842-1914). Alastor was Shelley's first mature work, which drew from Leigh Hunt, then a stranger to him, the first public recognition of Shelley's gifts as "a very striking and original thinker". Partly inspired by a boat trip up the Thames taken by Shelley, Mary, Peacock and Charles Clairmont, and partly by Shelley's complex reaction to Wordsworth, the poem, "in its brooding introspection, is a world away from the explicit radicalism of Queen Mab. Alastor is at some level an elegy for Shelley's failed marriage with Harriet" (ODNB). The volume also contains much revised versions of the first two cantos of Queen Mab, under the title 'The Daemon of the World', along with another revised section (entitled 'Superstition') from canto 6. The book was apparently rare as early as 1824: Mary Shelley, in her preface to Posthumous Poems, explained, "I have added a reprint of 'Alastor, or the Spirit of Solitude': the difficulty with which a copy can be obtained is the cause of its republication" - Dobell in his prefatory matter here reasserts this point, and continues: "A copy of the original edition now fetches, on the rare occasions of its appearance in the auction room, from eight to ten pounds. This, of course, is a prohibitive price to all but wealthy collectors; and it seems reasonable to suppose, therefore, that those Shelleyites whose means are limited will not neglect the present opportunity of acquiring what is practically and substantially an original edition, at an almost nominal price.

Original playbill for the P.T. Barnum's circus spectacle, featuring Jumbo.

Philadelphia: Merrihew Print, J. Spencer Smith, Chestnut Street, circa 1882, 1885. Original circus playbill measuring 395 x 142 mm, printed on both sides, split at central fold, very good condition. Scarce and highly ephemeral playbill from the golden age of the Barnum and Bailey circus, featuring woodblocks of P.T. Barnum and Jumbo, as well as the Roman hippodrome races.A collision of different typefaces amidst four woodblocks, the playbill was printed locally to advertise the week of shows commencing 30 April. Jumbo was purchased from the London Zoo in 1882 and Barnum's partnership with fellow showman James Bailey ended in 1885, providing a three-year timeframe for the printing of this playbill (the three owners - Barnum, Bailey and Hutchinson - are clearly indicated). And what a spectacle it must have been, filling the broadmeadow below Dickinson street in Philadelphia. In addition to Jumbo the elephant, the playbill boasts a further another 29 trained elephants and no less than 10 giraffes. In fact, the circus boasted an entire zoological exhibition within its boundaries, here spruiked as "2 Mighty Menageries Containing every notable Wild Beast, Bird and Reptile known to Naturalists".The reverse of the handbill boasts the brilliant street parade, Roman hippodrome races and over 1000 rare and curious freaks. Of special interest is an "ethnological" exhibit including so called Aztecs, the last of the Montezumas, a wild girl, giants and midgets, and the wild man of Borneo. This bill proclaims the exorbitant costs of staging the circus, compared to the relatively modest admission price of 50 cents for adults and children half price.
