Das Kapital. Kritik der politischen Oekonomie. Zweiter Band. Buch II: Der Cirkulationsprocess des Kapitals. Herausgeben von Friedrich Engels.

Hamburg: Otto Meissner, 1885 - Octavo (213 x 133 mm), pp. xxvii, [1], 526 + imprint leaf. Recent half green morocco and marbled boards, spine ruled and decorated gilt in compartments, direct lettered gilt, marbled endpapers. Lower margin with small damp mark to final few leaves; a very good copy. German school library stamp and shelf number on title page. First edition of the second volume of Das Kapital, edited from Marx's manuscripts by Friedrich Engels. "Marx himself modestly described Das Kapital as a continuation of his Zur Kritik de politischen Oekonomie, 1859. It was in fact the summation of his quarter of a century's economic studies, mostly in the Reading Room of the British Museum. The Athenaeum reviewer of the first English translation (1887) later wrote: 'Under the guise of a critical analysis of capital, Karl Marx's work is principally a polemic against capitalists and the capitalist mode of production, and it is this polemical tone which is its chief charm'. The historical-polemical passages, with their formidable documentation from British official sources, have remained memorable; and, as Marx (a chronic furunculosis victim) wrote to Engels while the volume was still in the press, 'I hope the bourgeoisie will remember my carbuncles all the rest of their lives' " (PMM). "The history of the twentieth century is Marx's legacy. Stalin, Mao, Che, Castro—the icons and monsters of the modern age have all presented themselves as his heirs. Whether he would recognise them as such is quite another matter Nevertheless, within one hundred years of his death half the world's population was ruled by governments that professed Marxism to be their guiding faith. His ideas have transformed the study of economics, history, geography, sociology and literature. Not since Jesus Christ has an obscure pauper inspired such global devotion—or been so calamitously misinterpreted." (Francis Wheen, in his introduction to Karl Marx, 1999).         Alastor; or, the Spirit of Solitude: and Other Poems

London: Reeves and Turner, and B. Dobell,, 1885. A facsimile reprint of the original edition, first published in 1816. Octavo. Original tan buckram, paper title label to spine. Very slight rubbing to ends and corners, front hinge just starting at the ends, internally fresh and uncut, withal an excellent copy. First edition thus, signed by Bertram Dobell on the front free endpaper (conceivably denoting this as his retained copy), one of the scarce 50 copies on Whatman's Hand-made Paper from a limited edition restricted to 404 copies (4 were on vellum, and 350 copies were on toned paper). This facsimile was issued as number 3 in the second series of the publications of The Shelley Society, at the initiative of literary scholar and bookseller Bertram Dobell (1842-1914). Alastor was Shelley's first mature work, which drew from Leigh Hunt, then a stranger to him, the first public recognition of Shelley's gifts as "a very striking and original thinker". Partly inspired by a boat trip up the Thames taken by Shelley, Mary, Peacock and Charles Clairmont, and partly by Shelley's complex reaction to Wordsworth, the poem, "in its brooding introspection, is a world away from the explicit radicalism of Queen Mab. Alastor is at some level an elegy for Shelley's failed marriage with Harriet" (ODNB). The volume also contains much revised versions of the first two cantos of Queen Mab, under the title 'The Daemon of the World', along with another revised section (entitled 'Superstition') from canto 6. The book was apparently rare as early as 1824: Mary Shelley, in her preface to Posthumous Poems, explained, "I have added a reprint of 'Alastor, or the Spirit of Solitude': the difficulty with which a copy can be obtained is the cause of its republication" - Dobell in his prefatory matter here reasserts this point, and continues: "A copy of the original edition now fetches, on the rare occasions of its appearance in the auction room, from eight to ten pounds. This, of course, is a prohibitive price to all but wealthy collectors; and it seems reasonable to suppose, therefore, that those Shelleyites whose means are limited will not neglect the present opportunity of acquiring what is practically and substantially an original edition, at an almost nominal price.

Original playbill for the P.T. Barnum's circus spectacle, featuring Jumbo.

Philadelphia: Merrihew Print, J. Spencer Smith, Chestnut Street, circa 1882, 1885. Original circus playbill measuring 395 x 142 mm, printed on both sides, split at central fold, very good condition. Scarce and highly ephemeral playbill from the golden age of the Barnum and Bailey circus, featuring woodblocks of P.T. Barnum and Jumbo, as well as the Roman hippodrome races.A collision of different typefaces amidst four woodblocks, the playbill was printed locally to advertise the week of shows commencing 30 April. Jumbo was purchased from the London Zoo in 1882 and Barnum's partnership with fellow showman James Bailey ended in 1885, providing a three-year timeframe for the printing of this playbill (the three owners - Barnum, Bailey and Hutchinson - are clearly indicated). And what a spectacle it must have been, filling the broadmeadow below Dickinson street in Philadelphia. In addition to Jumbo the elephant, the playbill boasts a further another 29 trained elephants and no less than 10 giraffes. In fact, the circus boasted an entire zoological exhibition within its boundaries, here spruiked as "2 Mighty Menageries Containing every notable Wild Beast, Bird and Reptile known to Naturalists".The reverse of the handbill boasts the brilliant street parade, Roman hippodrome races and over 1000 rare and curious freaks. Of special interest is an "ethnological" exhibit including so called Aztecs, the last of the Montezumas, a wild girl, giants and midgets, and the wild man of Borneo. This bill proclaims the exorbitant costs of staging the circus, compared to the relatively modest admission price of 50 cents for adults and children half price.

New York::: Charles L. Webster & Company,,, 1885, 1886.. . A Near Fine tight set in green cloth bindings stamped in gold on the spine and front covers. This set is complete with the facsimile letter of Grant's original terms for Lee's surrender tipped in that is often missing. Mark Twain was the publisher of this monumental memoir as well as its editor and proof reader. Twain was extremely fond of and a close friend of Grant and encouraged the President and war hero to write his memoirs. Grant was dying of throat cancer but completed his two volume opus, dictating the second volume to a secretary. Twain noted in a letter to his daughter that the manuscript was not even set yet and 20,000 sets had been ordered from only two states. "Wait till you hear from the other 37." Grant finished his memoirs on July 18, 1885 and died five days later on July 23rd. Following his death, advance orders of the memoirs reached 300,000 sets realizing close to $450,000 for his family which was otherwise penniless. In a 1992 New York Times book review, General Schwarzkopf is quoted as using Grant's two-volume work as his model, calling it the finest military history of the Civil War..

Notiz über die Spectrallinien des Wasserstoffs. WITH: Zweite Notiz über die Spectrallinien des Wasserstoffs

1st Edition Basel: H. George's Verlag, 1885. FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Balmer's two papers providing the formula for describing the spectral lines of hydrogen; of profound influence for Niels Bohr and the beginnings of quantum theory. "Although trained as a mathematician and working as a mathematics teacher, Balmer became interested in spectroscopy, which was very much at the cutting edge of scientific research at the time, and was encouraged by colleagues at Basle University to try to find an explanation for the way lines in a spectrum are distributed--at first sight, in a random pattern. Although many other scientists had tried and failed to find some order in these patters, in 1884, in his sixtieth year, Balmer succeeded in finding an equation that not only reproduced the relationship between the four bright lines known in the spectrum of hydrogen at the time, but also predicted the existence of a fifth line, at the edge of visibility, that was soon detected. The formula was published in 1885, the year Niels Bohr was born."The five lines became known as the Balmer series... Although Balmer's results were entirely empirical, based on the mathematical relationships alone with no attempt to find their underlying physical cause, this discovery that there was a mathematical order in the pattern of spectral lines was an important step towards developing an understanding of the spectrum in quantum terms" (Gribbin, Q is for Quantum). ??"Shortly after 7 February [1913] Bohr heard of the Balmer formula. By 6 March he had completed a paper containing its interpretation. That event marks the beginning of the quantum theory of atomic structure" (Pais, Niels Bohr's Times).IN: Verhandlungen der Naturforschenden Gesellschaft in Basel, vol. 7, pp. 548-560; 750-752. Basel: H. George's Verlag, 1885. Octavo, original yellow printed wrappers, uncut and largely unopened; custom box. Stamp on front wrapper.         A Walk in Sydney Streets on the Shady Side. 20 Sketches...

Sydney: The Author, 1885. Folio, lithographic dedication, title and envoi, and 20 lithographs;original publisher's half morocco. One of the rarer nineteenth-century illustrated Australian books in a handsome Sydney binding by W.E. Smith. A journalist, Whitelocke was born in London in 1861. It is not clear when he arrived in Australia but he entered journalism in the 1880s and was editor of the Barrier Miner and the National Advocate; he also wrote for the Sydney Mail and other papers. His social sympathies and his often satirically observant eye are obvious from this series of Mayhewesque images of Sydney city life.As Whitelocke himself comments in the advertisement to the work, the idea was prompted by a Sydney Morning Herald review of his 24 original sketches from the works of Charles Dickens (1882): the editors applauded the sketches, but openly wondered why the artist did not stay closer to home, as 'Sydney streets afford more subjects for a book of sketches than any work of Dickens'. Whitelocke acknowledged the value of such a project, and the resulting lithographs show that he was evidently drawn to the everyday bustle of the city, producing a fascinating series of social documents. His concern is with everyday life, whether it is an image of a Chinese vegetable seller, news-boys, orators in the park or street musicians (playing a harp, no less). There is a moralising tone to much of the letterpress, which belies the evident empathy and compassion of the images. Some scattered spotting, expertly rebacked, edges bumped but a good copy.

Durchgehende Paginierung. Band I: V, 304 Seiten / Band II: Seiten 305 - 591. Privates Halbleder der Zeit. Rücken teilweise angebrochen. Exlibis Schlatters in beiden Bänden ("Er trägt alles durch das Wort seiner Kraft" - Dr.Adolf Schlatter). Das Werk voller umfangreicher Annotation in Schlatter's Hand. Einige wenige Annotationen in Stenographie.

Life and Works of Charlotte Bronte and Her Sisters

Smith, Elder, & Co., London 1885 - Seven volumes, complete Octavo. three-quarter red morocco over red marbled boards, spine with extra gilt and raised bands, red and green morocco gilt lettered spine labels, all edges marbled, marbeld endpapers. Illustrated in each volume by E. M. Wimperis, a friend of the Brontes. The volumes are:Jane Eyre; Shirley; Villette; The Professor : with Poems; Wuthering Heights; Wildfell Hall and Life of Charlotte Bronte by Mrs. Gaskell.Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855)Ê and her sisters Emily Bronte (1818-1848) and Anne Bronte (1820-1849) have charmed, inspired, and even shocked readers from the Victorian age to the present.Ê Raised in Haworth, Yorkshire, the three sisters produced such classics as Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.Ê Influenced by British Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Scott, and Byron, the Brontes produced a cast of unforgettable characters such as the devoted governess, Jane Eyre, and the lovers, Heathcliff, Cathy, and Hareton.Ê The Bronte Family website explores the lives, literature, and art of these important Victorian women writers. The Bront‘s are the world's most famous literary family and Haworth Parsonage, now the Bront‘ Parsonage Museum, was their home from 1820 to 1861.ÊCharlotte, Emily and Anne Bront‘ were the authors of some of the best-loved books in the English language. Charlotte's novel 'Jane Eyre' (1847), Emily's 'Wuthering Heights' (1847), and Anne's 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' (1848) were written in this house over a hundred and fifty years ago, yet their power still moves readers today. To find two writers of genius in one family would be rare, but to find several writers in one household is unique in the history of literature. Charlotte and Emily are ranked among the world's greatest novelists; Anne is a powerful underrated author, and both their father, the Revd. Patrick Bront‘, and brother Branwell also saw their own works in print. The Bront‘s, published under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, were acknowledged at the time for their directness and powerful emotional energy, qualities which were sometimes interpreted by the critics as 'coarse' and 'brutal'. - Bronte Society.
