Durchgehende Paginierung. Band I: V, 304 Seiten / Band II: Seiten 305 - 591. Privates Halbleder der Zeit. Rücken teilweise angebrochen. Exlibis Schlatters in beiden Bänden ("Er trägt alles durch das Wort seiner Kraft" - Dr.Adolf Schlatter). Das Werk voller umfangreicher Annotation in Schlatter's Hand. Einige wenige Annotationen in Stenographie.

Life and Works of Charlotte Bronte and Her Sisters

Smith, Elder, & Co., London 1885 - Seven volumes, complete Octavo. three-quarter red morocco over red marbled boards, spine with extra gilt and raised bands, red and green morocco gilt lettered spine labels, all edges marbled, marbeld endpapers. Illustrated in each volume by E. M. Wimperis, a friend of the Brontes. The volumes are:Jane Eyre; Shirley; Villette; The Professor : with Poems; Wuthering Heights; Wildfell Hall and Life of Charlotte Bronte by Mrs. Gaskell.Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855)Ê and her sisters Emily Bronte (1818-1848) and Anne Bronte (1820-1849) have charmed, inspired, and even shocked readers from the Victorian age to the present.Ê Raised in Haworth, Yorkshire, the three sisters produced such classics as Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.Ê Influenced by British Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Scott, and Byron, the Brontes produced a cast of unforgettable characters such as the devoted governess, Jane Eyre, and the lovers, Heathcliff, Cathy, and Hareton.Ê The Bronte Family website explores the lives, literature, and art of these important Victorian women writers. The Bront‘s are the world's most famous literary family and Haworth Parsonage, now the Bront‘ Parsonage Museum, was their home from 1820 to 1861.ÊCharlotte, Emily and Anne Bront‘ were the authors of some of the best-loved books in the English language. Charlotte's novel 'Jane Eyre' (1847), Emily's 'Wuthering Heights' (1847), and Anne's 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' (1848) were written in this house over a hundred and fifty years ago, yet their power still moves readers today. To find two writers of genius in one family would be rare, but to find several writers in one household is unique in the history of literature. Charlotte and Emily are ranked among the world's greatest novelists; Anne is a powerful underrated author, and both their father, the Revd. Patrick Bront‘, and brother Branwell also saw their own works in print. The Bront‘s, published under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, were acknowledged at the time for their directness and powerful emotional energy, qualities which were sometimes interpreted by the critics as 'coarse' and 'brutal'. - Bronte Society. Some rubbing and scuffing to edges and tips, bookplate on front pastdowns, else fine [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Alastor; or, the Spirit of Solitude: and Other Poems. A facsimile reprint of the original edition, first published in 1816.

London: Reeves and Turner, and B. Dobell, 1885 - Octavo. Original tan buckram, paper title label to spine. Very slight rubbing to ends and corners, front hinge just starting at the ends, internally fresh and uncut, withal an excellent copy. First edition thus, signed by Bertram Dobell on the front free endpaper (conceivably denoting this as his retained copy), one of the scarce 50 copies on Whatman's Hand-made Paper from a limited edition restricted to 404 copies (4 were on vellum, and 350 copies were on toned paper). This facsimile was issued as number 3 in the second series of the publications of The Shelley Society, at the initiative of literary scholar and bookseller Bertram Dobell (1842-1914). Alastor was Shelley's first mature work, which drew from Leigh Hunt, then a stranger to him, the first public recognition of Shelley's gifts as "a very striking and original thinker". Partly inspired by a boat trip up the Thames taken by Shelley, Mary, Peacock and Charles Clairmont, and partly by Shelley's complex reaction to Wordsworth, the poem, "in its brooding introspection, is a world away from the explicit radicalism of Queen Mab. Alastor is at some level an elegy for Shelley's failed marriage with Harriet" (ODNB). The volume also contains much revised versions of the first two cantos of Queen Mab, under the title 'The Daemon of the World', along with another revised section (entitled 'Superstition') from canto 6. The book was apparently rare as early as 1824: Mary Shelley, in her preface to Posthumous Poems, explained, "I have added a reprint of 'Alastor, or the Spirit of Solitude': the difficulty with which a copy can be obtained is the cause of its republication" - Dobell in his prefatory matter here reasserts this point, and continues: "A copy of the original edition now fetches, on the rare occasions of its appearance in the auction room, from eight to ten pounds. This, of course, is a prohibitive price to all but wealthy collectors; and it seems reasonable to suppose, therefore, that those Shelleyites whose means are limited will not neglect the present opportunity of acquiring what is practically and substantially an original edition, at an almost nominal price."       TWO VOLUME, HANDSOMELY BOUND FIRST EDITIONS OF PEIRCE'S SEMINAL WORK IN THE STUDY OF LOGIC, HIS 1885 LOGIC OF QUANTIFIERS, AS WELL AS AN IMPORTANT PRECURSOR, HIS 1880 PAPER "OFTEN REGARDED AS THE FIRST PRESENTATION OF BOOLEAN ALGEBRA IN ITS MODERN FORM" (Grattan-Guinnes, ed. Companion Encyclopedia of the History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences, Volume 1, p. 608). Charles Sanders Peirce was an accomplished scientist, philosopher, and mathematician, but he considered himself above all a logician. "His contributions to the development of modern logic at the turn of the 20th century were colossal, original and influential" (Encyclopedia of Philosophy). The development of "a formal language in which mathematical statements could be made, and rules for correctly inferring statements from statements" was central to modern proof theory (Byrne, Peirce's First-Order Logic of 1885, 949). From at least the time of Leibniz, their exists a history of formalizing language in order to formalize steps of inference. The introduction of quantification to the formalization of mathematical statements was a critical step in the development of such languages. Peirce's seminal 1885 paper on the mathematics of logic, presents his theory of quantification - a complete presentation of logic in an algebraic format. Peirce began his research into the algebra of logic late in the 1860s and began investigating laws on operations of relation algebras by at least 1870. Writing in 1884 (for the 1885 paper), Peirce was blunt about his intent: "In this paper I purpose to develop an algebra adequate to the treatment of all problems of deductive logic, showing as I proceed what kind of signs have necessarily to be employed at each stage of the development. I shall thus attain three objects. The first is the extension of the power of logical algebra over the whole of its proper realm. The second is the illustration of principles which underlie all algebraic notation. The third is the enumeration of the essentially different kinds of necessary inference; for when the notation which suffices for exhibiting one inference is found inadequate for explaining another, it is clear that the latter involves an inferential element not present in the former" (Peirce, 1885). In "his important 1880 paper", Peirce "broke with the Aristotelian semantics of classes and introduced modern semantics, allowing a class symbol to be empty (as well as to be the universe), and stated the truth values of the categorical propositions that we use today" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy); The Essential Peirce: 1867-1893, v. 1, 1992). Specifically, he explicitly eliminated "the Aristotelian derivation of particular statements from universal statements by giving the modern meaning for "All A is B". In addition, he extended the algebra of logic for classes to the algebra of logic for binary relations and introduced general sums and products to handle quantification" (Stanford). Many, including the noted logician and philosopher Arthur Prior, have argued that Peirce's 1880 paper alone "provides a complete basis for propositional logic" (Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Further still, the 1880 paper "holds a place of some importance in the history of formal logic and mathematics [in part because in it, Peirce] discusses that relationship between thinking and cerebration (or logic and physiology)" (ibid). The "fruitfulness" of Peirce's thinking in the 1880 paper is most evident in the watershed paper of 1885 wherein he introduces an entire "system for propositional logic based on five axioms for implication (represented by the signs '-.         Tradiciones y leyendas mexicanas. Edicion de gran lujo, adornada con multitud de artisticos grabados intercalados en el texto, ricas laminas sueltas y preciosos cromos

Mexico City: J. Ballesca, 1885. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. 359, [5] pp. With 8 chromolithographs, all with original tissue guards, all in extremely bright and fresh state. Bound in original Mexican publisher's cloth, very oddly decorated with a skeleton facing a spooky Mayan statue, the whole surrounded by Mayan glyphs. Front inner hinge expertly mended. Extraordinary 19th-century Mexican chromolithographs illustrate this important book of Mexican poetry. "Tradiciones y leyendas mexicanas" is a true collaboration between two of the most significant Mexican writers of the era, portraying in elegant verse a colorful picture of the "New Spain" of the conquistadors: the Mexico of yore. Concerning this first edition, published by Ballesca, "en lujosa edicion, que aparecio sin fecha. Se sabe hoy que el alo de publicacion fue 1885" (Jose Ortiz Monasterio, Historia y ficcion. Los dramas y novelas de Vincente Riva Palacio, Mexico City, 1993, p. 316). Monasterio fails to mention how he this date "is known." For the record, it is clearly stated in an account of the lawsuit between the publisher and the authors in: Recopilacion de leyes, decretos y providencias de los poderes legislativo y ejecutivo de la union: Desde que se establecio en la ciudad de Mexico el Supremo Gobierno, Volume 45 (1887) pp. 166-167. No copy in the U.S. according to Worldcat (sic), although Estrelle Lutrell's "Mexican Writers" (1920) describes a copy at the University of Arizona. The Univ. Arizona Library's online catalogue shows that their copy is lacking the final two leaves (Table of Contents and List of Plates); it is also wrongly described as having "10" plates, whereas the actual number of plates is 8 as per the "List of Plates" -- all present in our copy. Two issues of the binding cloth are here recorded for the first time: light brown (as here) and dark green (cf. Morton Auction 686, October 23, 2013, lot 230). Our copy bears a warm presentation inscription from the author to Canovas del Castillo (Madrid, 18 March 1887). Rare in any condition.

Cocaine and its use in ophthalmic and general surgery. Reprinted from Archives of Ophthalmology, December 1884

New York and London: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1885. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. Original green cloth, gilt-lettered spine and front cover (somewhat creased, top corner bumped), dark brown endpapers (one centimeter portion of back hinge cracked). A sound and attractive copy. First edition in book form, this is "one of the earliest to describe the use of cocaine as a local anesthetic in both general and ophthalmologic surgery. Knapp specifically cited its utilization in retrobulbar anesthesia" (Rutkow). In the previous year the use of cocaine as a local anesthetic was introduced and first published by Dr. Carl Koller of Vienna (Sept. 16, 1884). Contained in the present volume is Knapp's "faithful, unabridged translation of the original paper" of Dr. Koller, which is also the first appearance in English. Knapp (1831-1911), a student of Helniholtz and von Graefe, established the Ophthalmic and Aural Institute in New York City. Ira M. Rutkow, History of Surgery in the United States 1775-1900, vol. 2, p. 199, item OPp87. Norman 1224. Garrison-Morton 5678. Hirsch III:556. Waller 5322. Scarce: of this first edition ours is the only copy currently on the market. It would appear that the most "recent" copy to appear at auction sold at Christie's NY in 1998.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1885 - 1885 Wisden Paperback, Facsimile Spine, Very Good.

1885. This is a delightful 1885 Original Paperback Wisden, 22nd Edition, with facsimile spine. The covers are super, odd mark but amazing for well over 100 years old, internally it is a very bright book, the odd spot to the odd page but for 1885 it is as white as they come. Spine is of similar colour to the book, the advantage of the facsimile spine is that you can read it without fear of breaking it , plus it is cheaper than an original too. Please note lettering on the spine of Wisdens started in 1887. A super addition to any collection.

Cape Town 1884.

Artist: ; issued in: ; date: 1885 - - technic: Lithography; colorit: colored; condition: Missing parts on the left side perfectly restored, folded; size in cm : 58 x 75,5 - description: Decorative city map of Cape town, depicting the city in 1884.The top of the map points more south than south west, unlike the more common convention of orientating to north in modern maps. Some of the things to note are the location of the Cape Town Station, the Sea Point Railway and the tramway from the Amsterdam Battery to the Standard Bank in Adderly Street. The Cape Town Station used to stand where one now finds the Golden Acre Shopping center, whilst the Goods Station was where today's Cape Town Station is.The earliest known remnants in the region were found at Peers cave in Fish Hoek and date to between 15,000 and 12,000 years ago.Little is known of the history of the region's first residents, since there is no written history from the area before it was first mentioned by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1486. Vasco da Gama recorded a sighting of the Cape of Good Hope in 1497. In the late 16th century, Portuguese, French, Danish, Dutch and English ships regularly stopped over in Table Bay en route to the Indies. They traded tobacco, copper and iron with the Khoikhoi in exchange for fresh meat. In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck and other employees of the Dutch East India Company were sent to the Cape to establish a way-station for ships travelling to the Dutch East Indies, and the Fort de Goede Hoop (later replaced by the Castle of Good Hope).

More New Arabian Nights THE DYNAMITER

1885. [Maurice Baring's copy, signed] London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1885. Bound in early (original?) green cloth. First Edition of this loosely-connected collection of tales, a "second series" of New Arabian Nights. To quote from Swearingen:~Stevenson was very ill during the first six months of 1884, and these stories were originally devised as entertainment for him in the afternoon at Hyères. As his wife writes... "I was to go out for an hour's walk every afternoon, if it were only back and forth in front of our door, and invent a story to repeat when I came in -- a sort of Arabian Nights Entertainment where I was to take the part of Scheherezade and he the sultan"... As Stevenson's health improved, he gradually returned to his own work and the stories of Scheherezade were thought of no more until after the move to Bournemouth in the summer of 1884: "Money was absolutely necessary, [and] we cast about for something that could be done quickly and without too much strain; the Scheherezade stories came to mind, and we both set to work to write out what we could remember of them."~Copies were bound in wrappers (more than 90%) or in red cloth. However, this copy is bound in green cloth, plain except for "THE DYNAMITER" running up the spine and "1885" at the bottom -- yet it appears (from the font of the lettering, plus the natural darkening of the endpapers) to be the original binding. It is in near-fine condition. See Beinecke 323-325 and Princeton 26 (no mention of this bindiong).~Provenance: this copy bears the title page signature of Maurice Baring (1874-1945 -- English man of letters, novelist, poet and dramatist), as well as on the paste-down, his pictorial bookplate. This is a remarkable bookplate, in that it was designed by, and bears the printed name and date "H[ilaire]. Belloc June 1897" -- who was a contemporary (1870-1953) Anglo-French novelist and historian; in fact these two friends, with G.K. Chesterton, are considered to have constituted the Catholic literary revival of the early 20th Century.

Adventures of Hucklberry Finn (salesmen's copy)

Charles L. Webster 1885 - Original salesmen's sample for "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn " by Mark Twain. A rare example of the salesman's dummy for Twain's greatest work - only 2 copies are found in the auction record. New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885 (actually 1884). 8 ¾ x 6 ¾". This copy is in original green cloth, stamped in black and gilt, inside front cover is WITHOUT the specimen spines of gilt titled morocco & sheepskin leather strips with the black & red labels. It has the sample pages of illustrations & text but DOES NOT have these leather samples which were originally glued into the salesman’s sample. The book is the earliest recorded state of the title page with the copyright date being 1885. Tissue guard over the frontis Kemble illustration on verso, portrait bust heliotype after Gephardt, title page, notice, explanatory, contents, list of illustrations and 39 leaves of text, with numerous illustrations after Kemble, 2 page advertisement for the present title, and 12 of the 18 subscriber's blanks at rear. The tissue guard has been traced in pen and pencil on both sides by a child, one page has been removed in the front, and one page pasted down (with some names written on the page as shown) on the front fixed end-paper where the leather sample strips were. In the list of illustrations the one captioned "Him and another Man" is incorrectly listed on page 88 (first state). See the photos, please. The book is very good overall for a salesman's sample which are usually found quite worn condition. Some fingerprints and soiling to some pages and the interior pages are very good. This copy does not have page 283 torn out, as agents were told to remove the page & send it to the publisher or their job would be terminated because of a defacement to the illustration on that page. The ruled order information paper provided at the back of the prospectus for the salesman to take orders contains 12 subscribers blanks with one partially filled in pen. Originally there were 18 pages, or 6 leaves, so three have been removed. This saleman’s sample of the great American novel is extremely rare in any condition to encounter. The book presents itself much better than the close up photos here show. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF U S GRANT: In Two Volumes

New York:: Charles L. Webster & Co.,. 1885.. First edition. This copy with GRANT'S SIGNATURE dated "LONG BRANCH, N.J. / JULY 9th, 1881," mounted on card tipped to frontis tissue guard Volume II. Card also features trimmed train-transit stamps from 1881 showing travel from New York to Long Branch on July 9th (and one more for Evanston, IL, July 12th). Presumably the autograph seeker met Grant on the train. There are remnants of what appears to be a train ticket on the verso of the card. Grant moved to New York in 1881 to partner in the Wall Street firm that lead to his financial ruin, and the Grants were known to spend summers at their cottage in Long Branch. After being defrauded of his savings by his business partner a year before his death, Grant began writing this memoir -- continuing to write even in his last days -- to leave a legacy for his family. A small, undated newsclipping affixed to base of the title page in Volume I attests to his success, saying that 325,000 sets had been sold; 75,000 were under preparation; and a check for nearly $250,000 would be sent to Mrs. Grant that month). Twain was resounding in his praise of Grant's prose: "this is the simple soldier, who, all untaught of the silken phrase-makers, linked words together with an art surpassing the art of the schools and put into them something which will still bring to American ears, as long as America shall last, the roll of his vanished drums and the tread of his marching hosts." Twain was responsible for the publication of this work and is assumed to have had a hand in its editing (or aided his friend in the writing of it). Finely bound in dark brown three-quarter leather with marbled boards and endpapers; spine with five gilt-stamped panels, including three with gilt tooling, and four gilt-decorated raised spine bands; all edges gilt. Illustrated with engravings, including the two frontispiece portraits of Grant; maps, including one folding one (volume II); and facsimile letters. Endpapers cracked at hinges, which are still holding; otherwise very good or better. .

Under the leadership of William and his Minister President Otto von Bismarck, Prussia achieved the unification of Germany and the establishment of the German Empire. Despite his long support of Otto von Bismarck as Minister President, however, William held strong reservations about some of Bismarck's more reactionary policies, including his anti-Catholicism and tough handling of subordinates. Contrary to the aggressive, domineering Bismarck, William was described as polite, gentlemanly, and while a staunch conservative, more open to certain classical liberal ideas than his grandson Wilhelm II.

Exceptionally nice just about fine copy of Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs about his experiences during and after the American Civil War. (Dates on the title pages and copyright pages match, 1885 and 1886) With 49 maps and illustrations, including two steel-engraved frontis-portraits and two etched views with tissue guards for both portraits including a wonderful engraving of Appomattox Courthouse where General Robert E. Contains numerous maps and facsimile documents and letters, several are fold-out.Size, Collation and Condition: 2 Quarto Volumes, measuring about 9.5"x6", green cloth with gold lettering. v1: 584 pages; v2: 647 pages; Volume 1: frontispiece of a young Grant, title page Vol I dated 1885, copyright page 1885, handwritten dedication to the American soldiers and sailors in facsimile (5), Preface (7-9), Contents (11-15), List of Illustrations (16), Main Text (17-584), facsimile letter after 312, ; Volume 2: frontispiece of an older General Grant; title page Vol II dated 1886, copyright page dated 1886; Contents (9-13), Maps and Illustrations (15), Main Text (17- 554), Appendix (555-632); fold-out map State of the War; Index (633-647), Errata to Volume I. Beautiful copy, just about fine. The boards are clean, corners straight, pages exceptionally clean and nice, NO foxing that I can see! Just a tiny hint of expected age toning, a little bit of edge-wear to the top of the spines, very minimal, tiny bit of rubbing on the edges of the spines, and tiny hint of a loose gathering of the first signature of Volume II. A very bright clean exceptional copy!NOTE: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. (The pictures are NOT stock photos.)
