(recto half-title, verso blank), 1f. (recto composer's printed dedication to Madame C. Miolan-Carvalho, verso blank), 1f. (recto named cast list, verso table of contents), 1f. (recto table of contents continued, verso blank), 1f. (recto part-title, verso blank), 391 ("Variante pour les Théâtres qui n'ont pas de Ballet"), [iii] (blank) pp. Printed on fine laid paper within decorative floral borders by Barbizet. Uncut. A presentation copy, with a fine autograph musical quotation in the hand of the composer to half-title, being two measures from the beginning of the second act of Manon notated in treble clef on one hand-drawn staff. With a key signature of three flats, and text underlay in French ("On l'appelle Manon elle eut hier seize ans... "). Signed and inscribed in black ink "au Prince Bojidar Karageorgevitch. Hommage de grand sympathie. J. Massenet Paris. 1893." Named cast includes Marie Heilbronn as Manon, Molé-Truffier as Pousette, Chevalier as Javotte, Rémy as Rosette, Lardinois as the servant, Talazac as Les Chevalier Des Grieux, Taskin as Lescaut, Cobalet as the Count Des Grieux, Grivot as Guillot de Morfontaine, and Collin as de Brétigny, with Lbis, Texte, Reynal, Legrand, Troy, Davoust, and Bernard. With unpaginated part-titles and illustrative engravings by P. Avril preceding each act. Binding very slightly worn, minor wear and foxing to wrappers. Slightly browned and cockled at edges; occasional light foxing. A very attractive copy overall. Deluxe limited edition of the second version of the opera, this number 19 of only 50 copies. Although an early work, Manon is one of Massenet's best-known and most popular operas. "The designation 'opéra comique' is misleading: there are only a few lines of spoken dialogue. But in their place there is much mélodrame, faultlessly handled at a technical level... In the final analysis Manon is by way of being a 'highlights' opera, lacking the cohesion and economy of more mature Massenet works, but those highlights were seldom surpassed in the composer's oeuvre." The opera's libretto, by Henri Meilhac and Philippe Gille, is based on Antoine-François Prévost's novel L'histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut (1731). Rodney Milnes in Grove Music Online. Prince Bojidar Karageorgevitch (1862-1908) was "a Serbian artist and writer on art, world traveller, and member of the Serbian Karađorđević dynasty. He gave singing and drawing lessons and later earned his living as an art critic and translator. He was a contributor to the Encyclopædia Britannica, Le Figaro, La Revue de Paris, Revue des Revues, Magazine of Art, and other publications." Wikipedia online. A highly attractive and rare edition of one of the most popular operas of the 19th century.

Medallic Illustrations of the History of Great Britain and Ireland to the Death of George II / Vol. I and Vol. II

Printed by Order of the Trustees of the British Museum, London 1885 - The original set of two matching volumes, from 1885, not a later reprint. Numerous small internal B&W hand-drawn illustrations, though the accompanying plates were sold in 19 large (folio), string-tied portfolios from 1904 to 1911, not included here. Both volumes stamped to title page "Presented by the Trustees of the British Museum." And both volumes show to front free endpapers the small bookplates of Christopher Rowe. However, it appears these Rowe bookplates were used to replace larger, original bookplates, since removed, indicating Mr. Rowe may not have been the original recipient of this presentation. These books show NO sign of any lending-library history. Both volumes all original, "good" to "very good," snugly bound in original brown endpapers and original pebbled brown cloth with gilt titles to spine, though with the board corners poking through. Vol. I also shows a half-inch tear to top of spine. The rear interior hinge of Vol. I is a bit unsightly from an old repair. These two books will ship at a combined weight of a little more than 8 lbs. So, Priority shipping will cost extra; overseas shipping is likely to run $70. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The "Characters" of Jean de La Bruyère Newly Rendered into English by Henri Van Laun With an introduction, A Biographical Memoir and Notes

New York: Scribner & Welford, John C. Nimmo, London [Ballantyne Press], 1885. One of 300 copies printed. This is number 46. 24 Etchings by B. Damman and V. Foulquier, plates on tissue tipped in. 1 vols. 8vo. Black morocco, gilt cornerpieces. Upper joint neatly repaired, some light rubbing and light offsetting, else a good, handsome copy of this work. One of 300 copies printed. This is number 46. 24 Etchings by B. Damman and V. Foulquier, plates on tissue tipped in. 1 vols. 8vo. This was originally published in 1688 as "Caractères de Théophraste traduits du grec, avec les Caractères ou les Moeurs de ce siècle." The original contributions by La Bruyère are primarily observations on character and conduct describing portraits of people and their failings, many were thinly disguised descriptions of living people. It was first translated into English in 1699 and is credited with greatly having influenced the English essayists of that time.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. One of the Earliest Dated Pre-publication Copies Sir Hugh Walpole Copy Purchased from Jake Zeitlin

New York: Charles L. Webster, 1885. First American Edition. Near Fine/No Dust Jacket. Publisher's original green cloth, stamped in gilt and black, with the following early issue points: a. Page 9, "Huck Decided." b. Page 13 "Him and another man" listed as p. 88. c. Page 57 "with the was." d. Page 143 "l" in Col. missing and "b" in body broken. e. Page 155, final 5 is in a different font. f. Page 283 is tipped-in. g. Title page is tipped-in, and copyrighted in 1884. h. Frontis is tipped-in, cloth not visible. SIR HUGH WALPOLE'S COPY, with his inscription stating that this is one of his top five favorite books and that he purchased it from the legendary Los Angeles bookman, Jake Zeitlin, on September 4, 1934. THE SECOND EARLIEST KNOWN, OF DATED PRE-PUBLICATION COPIES (1884) the 1884 gift inscription is to S. W. Field, one of the founders of Santa Cruz, California and it was he who was appointed the first police chief in 1867. The early issue points above and this 1884 gift inscription, show that this copy is a pre-publication copy and second earliest known of the first American copies issued; the earliest is the Charles L. Webster copy, which is dated November 26, 1884 and sold at Christie's in 2004 fro $265,000; tied for second place is Livy Twain's copy, also dated Christmas 1884, and sold at Sotheby's in 1991 for $99,000. Moreover, it is one of the very few association copies of Huck Finn we have seen, given it's connection to Sir Hugh Walpole and to the legendary bookseller, Jake Zeitlin. The New York Herald of 29 November, 1884, quotes Charles Webster as saying, "But 250 copies left the office [for California] ." The present copy is, doubtless, one of those copies. It is important to note that the next earliest dated copies share virtually the same issue points as our copy: (a). The Smillie copy of Huck Finn is dated Feb. 19, 1885. The Smillie copy is like our copy in every point, except the frontis cloth is visible. But the frontis was an added item, tipped into the book and therefore cannot be a guide to priority (Clarke). The Smillie copy is example #13 in the McBride bibliography. (b). The Drapkin copy of Huck Finn is dated Feb. 23, 1885. It is like our copy in every point, except the frontis cloth is visible; again, this point is not a guide to priority. Also page 155 lacks the final 5, whereas our copy has the final 5 in a larger font. But, according to Underhill, he had acquired a copy on April 30, 1931, which had the final 5 "stamped in" by hand, and which matched the original font. Underhill concluded that would leave only two states of p. 155 as it was published: with the final 5 of the wrong font, or with the final 5 absent. So, let us conclude that our copy of Huckleberry Finn is, in significant points, like the earliest dated copies, and that our copy, dated Christmas [December] 1884, is one of the very few early, dated copies. NOTE: In mid-December, 1884, Estes & Lauriat announced that Huckleberry Finn was ready and for sale by them at a reduced price. Twain filed a law suit and settled months later (30,000 copies were already bound in December, 1884). A fresh, bright copy, with occasional light foxing to preliminaries and front inner hinge with a minor repair. Housed in a custom pictorial green clamshell box, with the front panel design, similar to that on the book. BAL 3415. McBride, p. 92-123.

There are many questions arising under Mexican laws in said territories yet unsettled and innumerable ones must necessarily arise by virtue of the increase of trade, of progress, and of the transfer of property within the present domain of the Republic of Mexico" (Preface). Dame Wiggins Of Lee And Her Seven Wonderful Cats: A Humorous Tale Written Principally By A Lady Of Ninety. Edited, With Additional Verses By John Ruskin... And With New illustrations By Kate Greenaway. With Twenty-Two Woodcuts. London: George Allen, 1885. Deluxe Large-Paper edition, with additional verses by John Ruskin and additional illustrations by Kate Greenaway. Large quarto (8 1/2 x 6 12/16 in; 217 x 168 mm). iv, [4], 20, [1] pp. Twenty-two woodcuts, pp. 3,4,8, and 9 by Kate Greenaway. Publisher's brown cloth, gilt lettered with gilt-stamped vignette. Bookplate of T.R. Young. A very fine copy. Originally published in 1823, here as a facsimile reprint with four additional verses and illustrations by Ruskin and Greenaway respectively. "Ruskin's mood revived the idea of their collaboration on a book... Dame Wiggins of Lee and her Seven Cats was an early nineteenth century children's story which Ruskin believed had the right mixture of lightness and reassuring elements to merit reprinting. He had the woodcut illustrations of the 1823 edition republished, in line only, so that readers could colour them, and added four original verses to explain how the cats were educated. Kate provided four crude pencil sketches for the new verses. Her work was slight, and certainly out of keeping with the original heavy-lined woodcuts; nevertheless, Ruskin, in his euphoric mood, decided that the drawings were 'exactly right, and don't want a touch more.' He refused to alter or sharpen her lines, and, moreover, declared that if she could draw cats like these, she could forget his previous attacks on her rat-like dogs and cats" (Engen, p. 128). This special large-paper (quarto) edition was issued on Whatman paper in an edition of just 400 copies. Schuster & Engen 64.1e.

AFTER LONDON; OR, WILD ENGLAND ..

London, Paris, New York & Melbourne: Cassell & Company, Limited, 1885.. Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi-vii [viii] [1] 2-442 [443-444: ads] + 8-page publisher's catalogue dated "5.85" inserted at rear, original taupe bevel-edged cloth, front panel stamped in black, spine panel stamped in gold, rear panel stamped in blind, top edge untrimmed, other edges rough-trimmed, white endpapers with floral pattern printed in brown. First edition. According to Miller and Matthews, only about 1000 copies were printed, and some were for the American market. This copy has an inserted publisher's catalogue dated May 1885 (the earliest catalogue is dated March 1885). This unjustly neglected novel by a popular late nineteenth century English naturalist combines Jefferies' remarkable power of observation and his application of these observations into a philosophy based loosely on the Darwinian theory of evolution. Brian Aldiss (in Trillion Year Spree) observed that AFTER LONDON gave "memorable expression" to "the theme of nature reasserting its dominance. "AFTER LONDON stands with the works of Hudson and William Morris in rejecting modern, scientific times long before any disillusionment caused by the First World War set in." - Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 450. "AFTER LONDON is a first-class example of Victorian SF and proved very popular at the time; its influence can be traced through W. H. Hudson's A CRYSTAL AGE (1887) to John Collier's TOM'S A-COLD (1933) ..." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 642. "Unequal, but still a minor masterpiece." - Suvin, Victorian Science Fiction in the UK, p. 27. "... a remarkable book that deserves reading." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1184. Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 1-108; (1987) 1-53; (1995) 1-53; and (2004) II-567. Bailey, Pilgrims Through Space and Time, pp. 76-77. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 11.
