Sono trattate: la sua storia, istituzioni e antichità, le sue varie risorse (agricoltura, miniere, foreste, pesca, ferrovie, industrie e commercio), come pure “social games and festivities, fetes and public ceremonies, as well as hunting excursions: "caccia grossa" after moufflon deer and wild-boar”, molto seguite dal Tennant, esperto cacciatore. "Prima edizione".

Erste Auflage. Hrsg. The Life of the late General F. R. Chesney Colonel Commandant Royal Artillery

London: W.H. Allen, 1885. London: W. H. Allen & Co., 1885. First edition. 8vo. pp. xxiii, 477, [2], 48 (pubs. cat.); port. frontis., one extending map of the Euphrates; some small marginal tears, else largely unopened in the original cloth, gilt, slightly rubbed. With an accompanying letter from Louisa Chesney pasted to flyleaf, presenting the book to the Turkish ambassador to London Monsieur Musurus, and with a copy of his letter in reply pasted in at rear. Francis Rawdon Chesney (1789-1872) led the 1835 expedition that investigated the navigability of the Euphrates river by crossing from the Bay of Antioch and continuing aboard two steamers, Tigris and Euphrates, to the mouth. The loss of the Tigris during a whirlwind did not diminish Chesney's opinion that the Euphrates was indeed navigable, and could thus form a stage in the overland route to India. The idea was not sanctioned by the British Government, and Chesney continued instead a military career, spending much of the 1840s in China, where he commanded the artillery at the Hong Kong Station. After his death, his widow and daughter used his extensive journals to write up the present life, this copy of which was presented by Chesneys widow to the Turkish ambassador Kostaki Musurus (who is mentioned in the book)..         The Congo and the founding of its free state: a story of work and exploration.

London Sampson Low 1885 - First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., xxvii, 528; x, 483pp., 2 large maps in pockets at end of volumes, 3 further folding maps, 44 full-page engraved plates, including frontispieces, numerous text illustrations throughout, contemporary half calf gilt, marbled boards, red and green labels, light wear, an excellent set. The foundation of the Congo Free State. In 1879 Stanley went to the Congo after a meeting with King Leopold to explore the possibilities of development of the region. He secured for the Belgian Association Internationale the whole south bank of the River Congo and the north and west shores as well beyond the confluence with the Mobangi. He set up trading posts, etc. and established treaties with the local rulers and went on steadily with his political and pioneering work along the thousand miles of the navigable Congo from Stanley Pool to Stanley Falls, laying the foundations of that vast administrative system, extending from the Atlantic to the great lakes, and from the Sudan to Barotseland, which became the Congo State. Because he taught his men how to wield a sledgehammer effectively, Stanley received the title of Bula Matari, "breaker of rocks," from the Vivi chiefs. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Pool of Bethesda, Jerusalem, Israel.

      c. 1885 - Large albumen print. Good tonal range and in fair condition, light spotting in upper margin. 28.5 x 38 cm. The Pool of Bethesda is a pool of water in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem, on the path of the Beth Zeta Valley. Until the 19th century, there was no evidence outside of the second Book of Kings of the Old Testament and John's Gospel in the New Testament, for the existence of this pool. However, in the 19th century, archaeologists discovered the remains of a pool that fitted with both descriptions. The pool according the Old Testament, was built as a reservoir for rain water. According to the New Testament it was said to have healing properties and people would travel there to have their illnesses cured. In the late 19th century, the French constructed the Church of Saint Anne at the south east corner of the site in honour of Anne, Mary's mother. This photograph is one of the earliest pictures of the sight taken after its' discovery.

Selten - Erstdruck!Theodor Boveri's (1862-1915) Dissertation "Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Nervenfasern" (Contributions to the Study of Nerve Fibers).

Vanishingly scarce, not recorded on Copac only one on Worldcat. Number35 from the 'British Standard Handbooks' series. Undated, Worldcat estimates date to be 1885 from Clarke & Blind. This was prior to Spencer Blackett's acquisition of the publishers in 1887. The British Standard Handbooks series were originally sold at 2d each and are advertised as 'A New Series of Illustrated Practical Handbooks of Sports and Pastimes'. The rear wrap states that 'These Handbooks are perfect encyclopaedias of information upon their respective topics they readily commend themselves as marvels of cheapness'. This title looks into the creation of giants and dwarfs for Victorian burlesque theatre. There are also many other tricks and performances from Burlesque theatre described and explained such as 'The Three Legged Drawf', 'The Collapsible Gentleman', 'The Man-Pig' and 'The Explosive Spider.         The Variation of Animal and Plants under Domestication.

London John Murray 1885 - Second edition, fifth thousand, revised. 2 volumes, 8vo (19.5 x 14 cm). xiv, 473; x, 493 pp. woodcuts in text, publisher's ads to verso of title page and 32 pages ads dated January 1885 at end of vol. 2, largely unopened. Original green cloth gilt, ruled in blind, a fine copy. Originally intended as the first two chapters in a larger work on the origin of the species (he viewed the book of that name as simply an abstract of a more substantial project), these were the only ones published in his lifetime. With detailed facts and lengthy discussion, the work includes what Darwin believed to be new ideas of pangenesis, but the topics of sexual selection and human evolution were excluded from these already thick volumes. Despite their size, the works sold briskly (Desmond & Moore, Darwin (London: 1991), p.550). After running through the first issue in just a week (Freeman, p.122), John Murray produced a second issue, with several variations between the two. In the first, the imprint is printed on a single line on the spine, while it is broken on to two lines in the second. Numerous errata also appear in the first issue, most of which were corrected in the second. A second edition of 1875 bears even greater alterations to the text, as well as being reduced in size to a crown octavo. "Darwin's longest work, in which he discusses the differences between animals and plants found in cultivated varieties. The work contains three chapters of inheritance, Darwin's theory of pangenesis, in which he tried to provide an explanation of hereditary resemblance, inheritance of acquired characteristics, atavism, and regeneration. The theory served as a "point of departure for the particulate theories in the later nineteenth century"." DSB - Garrett Herman Freeman, 886. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Lindenia iconographie des orchidees.

Ghent Meyer-Van Loo then Vanderhaeghen -1894 1885 - 14 volumes bound in 7, 4to, 672 chromolithographed plates by P. de Pannemaeker, G. Severeyns, and J. Goffart, after P. de Pannemaeker, A. Goussens, J. de Bosschere, G. Putzys and others, slight browning to margins, original brown morocco-backed blindstamped boards; the last two vols. skillfully rebacked to style, an attractive run. A handsome and substantial run of this rare work. Jean Jules Linden (1817-1898) made extensive trips as a botanical explorer to South and Central America between 1835 and 1844. He was a plant dealer at Luxemburg from 1845 to 1852 and director of the Jardin Royal de Zoologie et d'Horticulture at Brussels from 1852-1861.         Great Expectations

London: Robson & Kerslake, 1885. Frederick William Pailthorpe's Original Watercolor Drawings for Charles Dickens' Great Expectations [DICKENS, Charles]. PAILTHORPE, Frederick W. Great Expectations. The Original Pencil and Watercolor Drawings and a Set of Proofs of the Etchings. London: Robson & Kerslake, 1885. Folio (10 7/8 x 8 1/2 inches; 277 x 215 mm.). Twenty-one pencil and watercolor drawings, each one signed by F.W. Pailthorpe, (6 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches; 172 x 110 mm.), interleaved with corresponding etched proofs on Japanese paper in black ink (probably one of 50 such sets), each mounted and tipped-in to an album, all edges gilt. Contemporary full red crushed morocco by Wallis (stamp-signed on front turn-in). Covers triple ruled in gilt, spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, double gilt-ruled board edges, elaborate gilt turn-ins, black coated liners and end-leaves, all edges gilt. Lower corners a little bumped, otherwise fine. A superb, unique and complete set of Pailthorpe's original watercolor drawings to Great Expectations published by Robson & Kerslake in 1885. Provenance: Mary Pinkerton Carlisle- the daughter of the founder of the famous detective firm, and wife of Jay F. Carlisle (bookplate); her sale Parke-Bernet, New York, 18 January 1938, lot 108; Kenyon Starling and William Self (bookplates). Many images are in reverse and differ significantly in the exquisite detail of composition, though not in the essential subject matter. Great Expectations was first published in All the Year Round in 1860-1861, without illustrations, although Dickens commissioned illustrations from Marcus Stone for the Library Edition in 1862. Yale/Gimbel H1826 - recording a set of "21 sketches in watercolor over pencil, on brownish-yellow tracing paper" probably after the etchings. [Together with:] PAILTHORPE, Frederick W. Great Expectations. By Charles Dickens. London: Robson & Kerslake, 1885. Limited to 50 sets of Proofs on Japanese paper, in bistre, 51 to 100 (this being copy no. 100). Large octavo (10 1/2 x 6 7/8 inches; 267 x 175 mm.). Half-title, List of Etchings and Twenty-one proof etchings (including title-page) on Japanese paper in bistre ink. The engraved surface measuring 8 1/4 x 5 inches; 210 x 127 mm. Loose as issued in the original quarter silk backed engraved paper boards portfolio. Covers very slightly toned at edges, inside paste-downs foxed, very light wear to spine, lacking original silk ties. An excellent example. Provenance: Kenyon Starling and William Self (bookplates). Great Expectations was the thirteenth novel by Charles Dickens and was his penultimate completed novel. It was also Dickens's second novel, after David Copperfield to be fully narrated in the first person. It was first published as a serial in Dickens' weekly periodical All the Year Round, from December 1860 to August 1861. In October 1861, Chapman and Hall published the novel in three volumes. Great Expectations was not illustrated at the time of publication. Frederick W. Pailthorpe's twenty-one illustrations to Great Expectations were produced in 1885, twenty-five years after the novel was first published. Both the original serialization and the subsequent first edition in book form of Great Expectations were issued without illustrations. The only other occasion that Dickens did not collaborate with an illustrator for one of his 'major' novels was for Hard Times (1854). These 21 etchings by Frederick William Pailthorpe (1838-1914) are from the Robson & Kerslake edition from 1885. Pailthorpe was of the 'old school' of book illustrators as represented by George Cruikshank and Hablot Browne. He was a personal friend of Cruikshank whose influence on Pailthorpe's work is obvious. Over the past fifty years I have seen a couple of first editions, rebound after 1885 and containing the suite of twenty-one etchings. Yale/Gimble H1133 (recording other issues).

First Edition in German !"Physiologie des mouvements is unique in many respects and is worthy to rank among the great books of all time. . . . The Physiologie des mouvements, which is of great value to the neurologist, is one of the greatest books from the point of view of a functional anatomist and practical orthopedic surgeon. . . . In a lucid and simple manner, the author unfolds the action of muscles individually and in groups, emphasising their simultaneous action, balance of action with resulting motion, action produced by selected electric stimulations in normal subjects, electric stimulations in individuals who presented various types of isolated or combined paralysis. The information obtained is supplemented by anatomical dissection and anatomic experimentation on the cadaver and clinical observations. Seldom can one find a more thorough, convincing and more useful description of important phenomena. Probably no one described more completely and exhaustively the action of the muscles moving the fingers and the thumb" E.         Personal Memoirs of U S Grant, Volumes I and II

New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1885. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. First edition, green cloth binding. Volume I published in 1885, 584 pages. Volume II published in 1886, 647 pages plus a listing of Errata from Volume I. Ulysses S. Grant is arguably one of the most important generals in U.S. History, at times referred to as "the man who saved the Union" for both his military leadership and his subsequent service as the 18th President of the United States. Some believe that Mark Twain assisted Grant in the final days of writing these memoirs shortly before his death in 1885, others say they are "pure Grant" and Twain only assisted in the publication. Either way, these memoirs are a critical part of understanding Ulysses S. Grant from the time of his earliest military service during the Mexican War, his subsequent military service including his time on the West Coast and in California, through the end of the Civil War. ***DESCRIPTION: Green cloth boards with facsimile in gilt of the gold medal awarded to Grant in 1863 (to celebrate his victories in the Vicksburg campaign, which gave the Union Army control over the entire Mississippi and split the Confederacy in two), gilt lettering on front and spine, general's four stars on black on the spine, decorated endpapers, two different frontispieces showing Grant in his youth and middle age, several maps (some folding) and reproductions of documents throughout. ***CONDITION: Overall both volumes are in near fine condition, with strong, square text blocks, solid hinges (the hinges of Volume I were recently professionally strengthened), gilt medallions unusually bright, the interiors bright and clean with barely a hint of foxing, the only prior owner marking being a vintage name in flowing ink on the flyleaf of Volume I with the date 1886. There is minor wear to the head and tail of both spines, minor rubbing to the corners, and Volume II has a small white spot on the front board (please see pictures and request additional if necessary). ***CITATION: The Union Bookshelf 35. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.       Inernat. Monatsschr. f. Anatom. u. Histologie, Bd. II. 1885. - 1885, 8, pp.278-283, 1 lith. Taf. mit eigenhändiger Anschrift an "M. le Prof. L. Ranvier. Collegè de France, Paris.", Briefmarken, Poststempel v. 3.9.85. Extreme rare Offprint!"In 1873, Bizzozero even hinted at the role exerted against infection by connective reticular phagocytes of lymph nodes. In a study on the structure of lymphatic glands, he stated that reticular cells could ingest infective particles that were carried by the lymphatic liquid. He added that: "...this fact is, perhaps, the cause of the stoppage of some infections to the lymphatic glands which are connected to the part covered by the infection through the lymphatic vessels" *). So, the mechanism of phagocytosis as a biological phenomenon was precisely described by Bizzozero in the period between 1871 and 1873, more than 10 years before Elie Metchnikoff described it. However, if we consider a structured 'theory' or 'doctrine' of phagocytosis that is, a theory or doctrine of immunity, this implies a mechanism of defence from external biological aggression that could be fully proposed only after the microbiological discoveries of Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch. And this concept was structured and articulated by Metchnikoff from 1882 onwards. However, the great Russian founder of immunology never sought credit for being the first to describe the phenomenon of phagocytosis, and in his masterpiece Immunity in Infective Diseases gave full credit to Bizzozero for having " ...first recognized ... an amoeboid cell which had ingested pus corpuscles".         Certified copy of a legal documenting providing Grant right-of-way and the right to erect a beach house in Long Branch

Near Fine. One legal folio folded at the top to make four pages. Old folds as filed, soiling and small tears at the extremities of the folds, very good or better. A certified handwritten copy prepared in March 1885, shortly before Grant's death, of an 1880 contract between Grant and Lewis B. Brown of New York City. Signed by various clerks with one seal, but NOT SIGNED BY GRANT. The document gives Grant "...forever a right of way to the Atlantic Ocean from Seabrook (now Ocean) Avenue over and upon the lot... and the privilege to erect a bathing house of moderate size upon the Shore of said Ocean... ." Presumably the "bathing house" was what we'd call a cabana. The document has been docketed and stamped in 1887, two years after Grant's death. Grant's shore house served as the Summer White House during his two terms from 1869-1877, obviously this right-of-way was issued after his term was over.

Cowen, Allan James Foli, Cecilia M. Hutchinson, Frederic King, Edward Lloyd, Joseph Maas, Alexander Campell Mackenzie, Robert Watkins-Mills, Janet Patey, Ebenezer Prout, Charles Santley, Charles Villiers Stanford, William Stockley, Zelia Trebelli-Bettini, and Anna Katharine Williams.

Birmingham: Hall & English, 1885. Quarto. Full dark maroon morocco with titling and device gilt to upper, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. 1f. (blank), 1f. (title), 12 pp. summary of program. [294] pp. including texts, notes, etc. on featured musical works, each with its own pagination. With dedication in manuscript "To Dr. Villiers Stanford With Compliments of the Committee." Binding somewhat worn, bumped, and chipped; slightly shaken. Occasional foxing and paper imperfections; front endpaper and collective title partially detached. Not located in OCLC. The Birmingham Musical Festival took place on August 25-28, 1885, and included the premieres of Dvořák's The Spectre's Bride (August 27th); Gounod's Mors et Vita; Frederic Cowen's Sleeping Beauty; Charles Villiers Stanford's The Three Holy Children; and Alexander Mackenzie's Violin Concerto, Op. 32. "The importance to Dvořák of his success in England can scarcely be overestimated: at a time when political feeling was detrimental to the reception of his work in Germany and Austria, England, far removed from continental bickering, appreciated him properly as an artist and contributed greatly to the growth of his international fame. For English audiences, Dvořák was able to base his commissioned choral works on Czech subjects (a fairy tale in The Spectre's Bride, a legend in St Ludmilla) without fearing that his work would meet with prejudice even before it was heard. Dvořák met prominent figures of English musical society who judged his work without arrogance or preconceptions, in contrast to the sometimes tactless conduct of some of his continental friends..." "... The textual basis of the The Spectre's Bride (1884), for the soloists, chorus and orchestra (written for the Birmingham Festival, but first performed in Plzeň), was the ballad Svatebni košile, from Erben's collection Kytice ('The Bouquet')."         S/W Originalabzug, Russolo und Vantongerloo im Café zeigend. [ca. 11 x 14,9 cm].

Rückseite mit hds. Bleistift-Titelei in franz. Sprache. (Zitat).
