        Poinciana Regia [Royal Poinciana]

      C. Muquardt, Brussels 1885 - Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from some very minor foxing. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. Native to Madagascar, the ornamental Royal Poinciana tree is widely cultivated in tropical countries for its stunning bright orange and flame-red blossoms. It is also frequently referred to as the Flamboyant Tree, so-called because of its large, colourful flowers. Still in her twenties, Berthe Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, from Belgium where he soon died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support. With great ingenuity, she managed to get a selection of her paintings chromolithographed and published under the title Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java Peints D'Après Nature , the first edition of which appeared in 1863-4. "Van Nooten was clearly more than competent, for the splendid tropical plants? have been depicted with great skill. She managed to accentuate the splendour of each species by adopting a style that combined great precision and clarity with a touch of neo-Baroque exuberance, revelling in the rich forms and colours of the tropics." (L. Tongiorgi Tomasi An Oak Spring Flora p.330) Cf. Nissen BBI 931; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3025; cf. L. Tongiorgi Tomasi An Oak Spring Flora 87. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. First American edition. Near Fine. A lovely copy in the publisher's green cloth, stamped in black and gilt. Contains the three first printing points: "Huck Decided" on p. 9; "Him and another Man" listed on p. 88; and "with the was" on p. 57. The other leaves were assembled at random and have no bearing on whether a copy is first or second printing, although variant states exist. A solid Near Fine copy with bright gilt and a tight page block. Very slight wear at the spine ends and corners, spine gilt a trifle rubbed. Without repair or work of any kind. On the whole, an excellent copy of the book that Hemingway claimed was the source for all modern American literature and "the best book we've had." BAL 3415. MacDonnell, 31. Recounting the adventures of Huckleberry Finn as he flees his own abusive father and aids Jim in his escape from slavery, Twain's novel has been praised for its "distinctly American voice," putting at its center two common people who find an uncommon friendship. "Today perhaps the novel's greatest significance lies in its conception of childhood, as a time of risk, discovery, and adventure. Huck is no innocent: He lies, steals, smokes, swears, and skips school. He accepts no authority, not from his father or the Widow Douglas or anyone else. And it is the twin images of a perilous, harrowing odyssey of adventure and perfect freedom from all restraints that so many readers find entrancing" (Mintz). A metaphor for a young and rebellious nation, as well as its individualist inhabitants, Huckleberry Finn defies genre by being simultaneously an adventure story, a road novel, a coming of age tale, an expression of nostalgia for the expansive natural spaces lost to industrialization, and an exploration of race and class. Listed on the American Scholar 100 Best American Novels and one of the 100 Best Novels Written in English. Near Fine.

Six Years in Seychelles; with Photographs from Original Drawings.

[?London: ?the author], 1885. - 4to (202 x 163mm), pp. [4 (title, verso blank, dedication, illustrations)], 59, [1 (blank)]; mounted photographic frontispiece and 29 mounted photographic plates, all after Estridge, one folding lithographic map, and one double-page letterpress table in the text; occasional light spotting, offsetting, or marking affecting text and plates, some photographs slightly faded; original hard-grained tan morocco, boards with gilt-ruled borders, upper board lettered in gilt, modern lemon-yellow endpapers, all edges gilt; a few light marks and scuffs, extremities lightly rubbed and chipped, skilfully rebacked and recornered, nonetheless a very good copy of a rare work; provenance: 'From the author' (presentation inscription on title, manuscript correction on p. 56, presumably in the author's hand) – S.F. Hassan, Mombasa, 3 January 1953 (ownership inscription on verso of frontispiece) – Humphrey Winterton (booklabel on upper pastedown; his sale, Sotheby's London, 28 May 2003, lot 248).First edition. Following a period in the army, Estridge (1837-1902) was appointed Collector of Customs at Mahé in the Seychelles (probably in 1880), and held the position until 1885, when he returned to England. In 1886 he took up the position of Receiver and Accountant-General, British Bechuanaland (and was elected a fellow of the Royal Colonial Institute in the same year), remaining in the country until 1888, when he retired to England.Six Years in Seychelles provides an overview of the islands and their history, commerce, architecture, geography, and natural history. Estridge provides much information on the flora and fauna, printing extracts from the report compiled by John Horne (the Director of the Botanic Gardens, Mauritius, who visited Mahé from 1871 to 1874 and published his notes in 1875), and discussing plant-hunting trips undertaken at the behest of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, the Director of Kew, and a visit in 1884 from the celebrated botanist and artist Marianne North, who 'greatly enjoyed the place, and was enraptured with the palms &c.' (p. 51; North's recollections of her visit and plant-hunting expeditions with Estridge appear in chapter XV of Recollections of a Happy Life (London: 1892), where he is identified as 'Mr. E.'). Another notable visitor was Gordon of Khartoum: '[w]e found him most pleasant and chatty. He greatly admired and was deeply interested in the Seychelles, and said he thought Praslin must have been the Garden of Eden' (loc. cit.).In one passage, Estridge records the effects in the Seychelles of the eruption of Krakatoa on 27 August 1883 and the consequent tsunamis: '[i]t began at about 4 p.m. [.] and a tidal wave suddenly came rushing at about four miles an hour, and reaching a height of about 2½ feet above the usual high springs. It receded in about a quarter of an hour, leaving boats high and dry. It then returned, and the same thing continued all next day, only varying in the time, each movement taking about ten minutes, and the height reaching about 10 inches. I noted from 10.15 a.m. till 1.05 p.m., that the sea flowed and ebbed 17 times. At 5 p.m. the sun was clear and bright; at 6 p.m., sunset, there was a lurid glare all over the sky; at half-past six the glare got much brighter; and at a quarter to seven it disappeared. The sky all day was slightly hazy [.] We were not aware till after the arrival of the Mauritius mail what caused this, but then learnt what it was and the great destruction it had caused. Even now the shores of the various islands are covered with pumice-stone' (pp. 51-52). The work is dedicated to the soldier and administrator Sir Arthur Elibank Havelock (1844-1908), who was Chief Civil Commissioner Seychelles Islands from 1874 to 1875 and from 1879 to 1880, and ended his career serving as the Governor of Trinidad, Natal, Sri Lanka, Madras, and, finally, Tasmania. The number of copies issued of this privately-published work is unknown, but the expensive and laborious technique of illustration wit [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Map of the new London Boroughs as proposed in the "Redistribution of Seats Act, 1885".

Edward Stanford Ltd London 26 Jany 1885 - Lithographic transfer, widest: 643 x 982 mm. Original wash colour, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into the original boards, with printed title label, two catalogue leaves pasted as end-papers. Detailed survey of London, at a scale of two inches to one mile extending North to South from Kingsbury Green, Crouch End and Snaresbrook to Anerley, and from Kew to 'Abbeywood', 'Lesness Heath' and Bexley Heath. Stanford used the base map - his 'Map of London and its environs .' - for a series of maps of the changing political face of London; frequently revised and updated (Hyde identifies 36 different versions), individual maps from the sequence are therefore very scarce. The 1885 Redistribution of Seats Act laid down the law for the creation of the modern British constituency system, as an adjunct to the Great Reform Act of the previous year.         TREASURY DEPARTMENT, REPORT ON THE INTERNAL COMMERCE OF THE UNITED STATES, BY JOSEPH NIMMO, JR., CHIEF OF THE BUREAU OF STATISTICS, TREASURY DEPARTMENT.

Government Printing Office, 1885., Washington - First edition. 8vo. Original full cloth, [1]-562 pp., 23.5 x 16 cm., 5 large folding maps in rear, tables, appendices. Six Score 81 says, "One of the "big four" cattle books; an indispensable source for research in the field. This issue, the "Treasury" issue, is the most desirable because of its maps and apparent priority of issue. It is a unique collection, and should be an early point of reference for anyone interested in this period. It contains more solid facts than any other primary source of the time." Herd 1674 says "Rare." "This book is held to be among the most important of the "big four" cattle books, and its contents were compiled by experts on the subject." Merrill p. 9 says, "The book deals with a unique subject, almost forgotten, a proposed cattle trail to connect Fort Griffin and Dodge City Trail at Fort Supply, Indian Territory, and proceed thence by a devious route to the Canadian line . Nimmo's report is a fairly comprehensive analysis made of the range cattle industry of that time. The book is excessively rare." Streeter Sale 2377 says, "Nimmo's essay on the range and ranch cattle business of the United States, which comprises Part 3 of his report, is regarded as the best and most comprehensive treatment of the industry made to that time." Nimmo was a long time government employee and statistician who produced a variety of reports over his career; however, this is his most important work. An absolute cornerstone work on the cattle industry. A near fine, solid copy housed in a quarter leather and marbled paper over boards slipcase with raised bands and titles stamped in gold on the spine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Bindene signeret Juul-Lassen.

Erste Auflage. Hrsg. The Life of the late General F. R. Chesney Colonel Commandant Royal Artillery

London: W.H. Allen, 1885. London: W. H. Allen & Co., 1885. First edition. 8vo. pp. xxiii, 477, [2], 48 (pubs. cat.); port. frontis., one extending map of the Euphrates; some small marginal tears, else largely unopened in the original cloth, gilt, slightly rubbed. With an accompanying letter from Louisa Chesney pasted to flyleaf, presenting the book to the Turkish ambassador to London Monsieur Musurus, and with a copy of his letter in reply pasted in at rear. Francis Rawdon Chesney (1789-1872) led the 1835 expedition that investigated the navigability of the Euphrates river by crossing from the Bay of Antioch and continuing aboard two steamers, Tigris and Euphrates, to the mouth. The loss of the Tigris during a whirlwind did not diminish Chesney's opinion that the Euphrates was indeed navigable, and could thus form a stage in the overland route to India. The idea was not sanctioned by the British Government, and Chesney continued instead a military career, spending much of the 1840s in China, where he commanded the artillery at the Hong Kong Station. After his death, his widow and daughter used his extensive journals to write up the present life, this copy of which was presented by Chesneys widow to the Turkish ambassador Kostaki Musurus (who is mentioned in the book).. Author Presentation Copy. Frist Edition. Manuscript.

The Congo and the founding of its free state: a story of work and exploration.

London Sampson Low 1885 - First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., xxvii, 528; x, 483pp., 2 large maps in pockets at end of volumes, 3 further folding maps, 44 full-page engraved plates, including frontispieces, numerous text illustrations throughout, contemporary half calf gilt, marbled boards, red and green labels, light wear, an excellent set. The foundation of the Congo Free State. In 1879 Stanley went to the Congo after a meeting with King Leopold to explore the possibilities of development of the region. He secured for the Belgian Association Internationale the whole south bank of the River Congo and the north and west shores as well beyond the confluence with the Mobangi. He set up trading posts, etc. and established treaties with the local rulers and went on steadily with his political and pioneering work along the thousand miles of the navigable Congo from Stanley Pool to Stanley Falls, laying the foundations of that vast administrative system, extending from the Atlantic to the great lakes, and from the Sudan to Barotseland, which became the Congo State. Because he taught his men how to wield a sledgehammer effectively, Stanley received the title of Bula Matari, "breaker of rocks," from the Vivi chiefs. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Pool of Bethesda, Jerusalem, Israel.

      c. 1885 - Large albumen print. Good tonal range and in fair condition, light spotting in upper margin. 28.5 x 38 cm. The Pool of Bethesda is a pool of water in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem, on the path of the Beth Zeta Valley. Until the 19th century, there was no evidence outside of the second Book of Kings of the Old Testament and John's Gospel in the New Testament, for the existence of this pool. However, in the 19th century, archaeologists discovered the remains of a pool that fitted with both descriptions. The pool according the Old Testament, was built as a reservoir for rain water. According to the New Testament it was said to have healing properties and people would travel there to have their illnesses cured. In the late 19th century, the French constructed the Church of Saint Anne at the south east corner of the site in honour of Anne, Mary's mother. This photograph is one of the earliest pictures of the sight taken after its' discovery.

Selten - Erstdruck!Theodor Boveri's (1862-1915) Dissertation "Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Nervenfasern" (Contributions to the Study of Nerve Fibers).
