        Artocarpus Polyphema [Chempedak]

Brussels: C. Muquardt, 1885. Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from a few light foxing marks. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. Closely related to the Jackfruit, the Chempedek is a large deciduous fruit tree native to Malaysia and Indonesia. Its large fleshy fruit is extremely fragrant and a popular source of food. In her early twenties, Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support. With great ingenuity, she managed to get a selection of her paintings chromolithographed and published under the title Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java Peints D'Après Nature , the first edition of which appeared in 1863-4. "Van Nooten was clearly more than competent, for the splendid tropical plants... have been depicted with great skill. She managed to accentuate the splendour of each species by adopting a style that combined great precision and clarity with a touch of neo-Baroque exuberance, revelling in the rich forms and colours of the tropics." (L. Tongiorgi Tomasi An Oak Spring Flora p.330) Cf. Nissen BBI 931; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3025; cf. L. Tongiorgi Tomasi An Oak Spring Flora 87.

        Mangifera Indica [Mango Tree]

Brussels: C. Muquardt, 1885. Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from some minor soiling and a few light foxing marks. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. Indigenous to southern Asia, the Mango tree, of which there are numerous varieties, belongs to the order of Anacardiaceae . It's sweet, fleshy fruit is among the most popular and well-known of all tropical fruits. In her early twenties, Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support.         Zalacca Edulis [Salak Palm]

Brussels: C. Muquardt, 1885. Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from some very minor foxing and a small orange spot in the lower right corner of the sheet. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. Similar to the sago tree, the Salak Palm is native to Indonesia, and its edible spherical fruit is covered by a prickly, lizard-like epidermis. It belongs to the order of Palmaceae , which, as Hoola Van Nooten remarks, was regarded by the renowned English botanist John Lindley as "the most interesting of the vegetable kingdom; as well as on account of the majestic aspect of their towering stems, crowned with foliage still more gigantic, as from the character of their grandeur which they impress upon the landscape of the countries they inhabit; their immense value to mankind as affording nourishment, clothing and numerous objects of economical importance, and the prodigious development of their reproductive organs." Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support.         Averrhoa Bilimbi [Bilimbi or Cucumber Tree]

Also described by some as the Apple tree of India, the Bilimbi is one of the chief species of the Oxalideae order. It originated from Indonesia, most likely in the Moluccas, and is commonly found in Burma, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and India. Its acidic fruit is frequently used for stain removal and as a main ingredient in pickle relish and chutney. Still in her early twenties, Berthe Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he soon died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support. A medium-sized tree from Southeast Asia, the Xanthochymus Dulcis yields three different types of fleshy bright orange fruit. This elegant print depicts the sweet, edible Manies variety, which is frequently grown by the natives of Java. Still in her early twenties, Berthe Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support.         Document - Frederick Douglass

Washington, D.C. 1885 - Printed document signed "Fr. Douglass." Single folio leaf folded to form four pages, worn at crease; notary blind-stamp. Deed transferring land from Senator John Sherman and John T. Arms, a real estate and insurance agent, to Eleanor G. Taylor; docketed, with several notations in Douglass' hand ----- Douglass, recorder of deeds for the District of Columbia, admired John Sherman, the venerable statesman who pervaded the Senate for more than three decades. In an 1859 "Self Made Men" lecture, Douglass commended Sherman's unpopular defense of Hinton R. Helper's contentious "The Impending Crisis" (1857). He supported the Ohioan's efforts to secure the Republican nomination in 1880, 1884, and 1888, later saying, "not only was Sherman the man fitted for the presidency but he was the man whose attitude towards the newly enfranchised colored citizens of the South best fitted him for the place." On February 25, 1895, the 71-year-old senator attended the memorial service for Douglass in Washington's august Metropolitan A.M.E. Church ---- Douglass was on the United States government payroll for ten years - marshal for the District of Columbia (under Rutherford B. Hayes, while Sherman was secretary of the treasury), recorder of deeds for the District of Columbia (under James A. Garfield), and minister resident to Haiti (under Benjamin Harrison). Although his political aspirations well exceeded the offices proffered him, Douglass, particularly as recorder, served without complaint or outward animosity. “Happy for me the American people possess in large measure a proneness for acquiescence,” he later attested in "Life and Times of Frederick Douglass." “I was the first colored man who held the recorder office. In this, if not anything else, I have opened the gate and led the way upward for the people with whom I am identified.” ---- Douglass held the recorder post between 1881 and 1886. The duties, he said, "though specific, exacting, and imperative neither fettered my pen nor silenced my voice in the cause of my people." [Attributes: Signed Copy]

JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION HELD UNDER AN ACT OF THE LEGISLATURE AT SIOUX FALLS, DAKOTA, SEPTEMBER, 1885. A.J. EDGERTON, PRESIDENT. JOHN CAIN, SECRETARY.

[Sioux Falls, Dakota: Sioux Falls Leader, 1885]. - [2],77pp. printed in double columns. Quarto. Later pebbled cloth. Internally clean and fresh. Near fine. The statehood movement in Dakota Territory began in the late 1870s and proceeded fitfully for the next few years, with those in the northern part of the territory, as well as Democrats, generally opposing statehood, and Republicans and those in the south generally in support of the movement. The result of this 1885 convention was a compromise, framing a constitution and providing for the election of state officers, but not making any provisions that might offend the federal Congress in Washington when it considered statehood for the territory. The constitution that emerged from this 1885 convention, however, was the same one (with very minor changes) that was adopted in 1889 when South Dakota became a state. The constitution itself is printed on pages 60-77, the names and home counties of the 111 delegates to the convention are also given, and the daily proceedings of the convention are related in minute detail. This official journal of the proceedings of the 1885 Constitutional Convention, then, is one of the earliest printings of the South Dakota constitution. We can locate a total of thirteen institutional copies of this scarce account of the 1885 journal of the Dakota Territory convention. ALLEN, DAKOTA 336. STREETER SALE 2079. OCLC 8127560.

        Pl. 17 Pukala

An extremely detailed hand-colored lithograph of a native Hawaiian flower by Mrs. Francis SInclair, published in London by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington in 1885. Overall this print measures 10.4X14.5". This print is of superior quality, and in good condition with bright crisp paper and radiant coloring. Some foxing, staining and creasing in margins.Isabella McHutcheson moved to Hawaii after her marriage in 1863 to her cousin Francis Sinclair. Their family were the first European settlers to live on the island of Ni`ihau. Isabella was the niece of Elizabeth McHutcheson Sinclair who had famously bought the island of Niihau from King Kamehameha IV for $10,000 in gold in 1864. Isabella was born in Stirling, Scotland in 1840 and from a very young age she showed a real artistic proclivity. Part of her childhood was spent in New Zealand where she first acquired an interest in botany as well. During the years that her husband Frank ran the family ranch, Isabella Sinclair occupied her time collecting botanical specimens, painting watercolor sketches of the plants, and preparing a collection that eventually became a book: "Indigenous Flowers of the Hawaiian Islands." She took a specific interest in the plant life of the Waimea and Olokele regions which she compared to the New Zealand species she was familiar with. She painted a series of watercolors and identified each specimen with its botanical name (provided by Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker), natural habitat setting, Native Hawaiian name and blossoming period. This book was the first in existence to feature color plates of Hawaiian flowers and plants. With 44 color plates in all the book was an exquisite cross section of  Native plants.

The British Crimea campaign is today, considered a consummate debacle, in spite of Florence Nightingale's noble efforts and the famous "Charge of the Light Brigade." Timayenis who had taught his children ? in 1888, Timayenis wrote the Anti-Semitic ?The Original Mr. Jacobs? stating that Rockefeller conforms to his Jewish stereotype ?Jews? and that ?the spirit of the Standard Oil Company is simply the spirit of the monopoly, of cruelty, of annihilation of all competitors, a spirit in fact such as manifests itself in the scandalous enterprises of the Jews??

Attached by three brass prong fasteners to a Manuscript Document, 2p, 8? x 10?, separate sheets. Fine condition. In part, ?To all whom these presents shall come I, Edward Myers Notary Public, duly commissioned and sworn ... do hereby certify that the paper writing hereunto annexed, purporting to be a copy of an agreement made by T.T. Timayenis bearing date the 28th day of August 1884 is a true and correct copy...?Headed ?Copy.? In full, ?Whereas John D. Rockefeller has this day day loaned unto T.T. Timayenis the sum of Three Thousand Five Hundred (#3500.00) Dollars, now this witnessseth, that the said T.T. Timayenis for himself his heirs, administrators and assigns covenants and agrees to pay to the party first mentioned the said sum upon demand; and to pay interest on said sum at the rate of six per cent per annum, in semi annual payments until the said principal sum is paid. He further covenants and agrees to deliver unto the said John D. Rockefeller, as collateral security for said sum, his work, now in the hands of the publishers entitled ?Greece in the Times of Homer? the said work and all its avails to remain in the hands of said John D. Rockefeller and to be security for said sum with all the interest due thereon until full payment thereof...?Telemachus T. Timayenis (1853-1918) was a Greek-American professor, novelist, and playwright. He was a professor of classical Greek at the New York Hellenic Institute and the Chautauqua School of Languages in 1879 and taught Rockefeller?s children. Seven years later, he became the director of the New York School of Languages. In 1888, Timayenis left his academic work and established Minerva Publishing Company in New York, the first company in American to publish books critical of Jews. Timayenis authored three book on the Jews: ?The Original Mr. Jacobs: A Startling Exposé,? ??The American Jew: An Expose of His Career?,? and ?Judas Iscariot: An Old Type in a New Form.? In ?The American Jew,? Timayenis provided several illustrations showing physical characteristics on how one might identify a Jew.Jonathan D. Sarna writes in ?The ?Mythical Jew? and the ?Jew Next Door?? a chapter of ?Anti-Semitism in American History? edited by David A. Gerber (Chicago: University of Illinois Press, 1986), that in ?The Original Mr. Jacobs,? Timayenis ?calls non-Jews who conform to his Jewish stereotype ?Jews,? evidence to the contrary notwithstanding: ?Has ever a man of observation asked himself the question: ?Is there any Jewish blood in the veins of John D. Rockefeller?? We do not hesitate to affirm from an intimate knowledge of the man, that if Rockefeller is not actually a Jew, he has many Jewish traits ... The spirit of the Standard Oil Company is simply the spirit of the monopoly, of cruelty, of annihilation of all competitors, a spirit in fact such as manifests itself in the scandalous enterprises of the Jews...?"
