        Pen-and-ink Drawing, captioned "Caleb's courtship / Eunice Stout", signed ("A. B. Frost")

N.p., n.d. [ca. 1885?]. Image size, 6 x 5 in. One a sheet measuring 13-1/2 x 10 inches. Some soilng and staining, mostly marginal, and two small, light stains within image. Framed and glazed . A delicate, lightly-inked drawing of a young woman, standing at a kitchen table, stirring the ingredients of a large bowl, beside which sit a jug and an opened bag. She is dressed simply, in a blouse and skirt, and wears a large sun-bonnet. Her face is in repose, and the skill of the artist has invested the drawing with a sense of gentle calm. In the lower right corner, there is a pencilled note "Reduced to 2/3 col wide Mag. pro.", from which we may infer that this is an illustration for a piece of magazine fiction, but we have been unable to trace which one. To judge from the Frost watercolor, "The Candlestick Girl", reproduced in Henry M. Reed's The A.B. Frost Book, in which "the model in this painting is thought to be Miss Emily Phillips who shortly after this painting was completed became Mrs. A.B. Frost" (p. 19), this drawing is also of the artist's wife -- the resemblance is unmistakable, the drawing showing the young woman's face in considerably greater detail. Emily Louise Levis Phillips came from a prominent Philadelphia family; she studied art in Germany and was an artist of no small skill. She was born in 1852, one year and two days after the birth of her husband; they were married in 1883, and she died just six months after him, in 1928. A FINE, SENSITIVE DRAWING OF MAJOR ASSOCIATION INTEREST

        La Décoration Arabe

Paris: J. Savoy & Cie., , 1885. Folio. Original green cloth, title gilt to the spine. 85 chromolithographic plates mounted on stubs, 11 of them double-page - numbered as 2 - and 12 black and white, one double-page. A little rubbed at the extremities, endpapers browned, light browning throughout, and some foxing largely to the prelims, and first few plates, overall a very good copy. First edition of this separately-published selection of plates from Prisse's massive masterwork L'Art Arabe (1869-77). Archaeologist and architect Prisse, previously fêted for his work in Egypt, "fell lyrically in love with Arab art, the brilliant offspring of a Hellenistic West and Sassanian East united under Islam. Dazzled by its symmetry, its complex, exquisitely-wrought patterns, its unity within diversity, and its opulence, he longed to initiate his compatriots in the West … he wanted to inspire the artists and architects of his time with fresh ideas to counter 'the poverty of invention that so justly inflames those who profess to worship beauty'. Above all he wanted to stir the public to understand and appreciate the epoch whose art had graced a millennium and inspired the Renaissance. 'We affirm that not since the fall of the Roman Empire has there been a people more worthy of acquaintance, whether we direct our attention to the great men it has produced or contemplate the prodigious advances of the arts and sciences among the Arabs across several centuries" (Norton, "Prisse: A Portrait", in Aramco World, Volume 41, No.6, November/December, 1990).

More New Arabian Nights the Dynamiter

Longmans, Green, and Co., London 1885 - 207pp. 1885. First edition. 12mo. In original publisher's paper wraps with steel engraving of a man climbing a ladder. A good only copy of this very delicate but scarce publication. The whole housed in a near contemporary navy blue-cloth covered card slipcase. This slipcase with a paper title block - with the ink author's name and title to it (slight loss to one corner of title block). The book has a very neat contemporary owner's initials in ink to the half-title page. Only around 30-50 percent of the spine strip survives. A number of page corners to the head and tail have been turned (now largely unturned). There is significant splitting between two gatherings - the two 'halfs' of the book now holding by several cords. Several short tears to the peripheries of the front card cover - all expertly repaired. A good copy of a scarce first edition in a very original format.         Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade)

New York: Charles L. Webster and Company,, 1885. With one hundred and seventy-four illustrations. Square octavo, original green pictorial cloth, titles to spine and front cover in gold and black, recased, spine restored head and tail. Green morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. Illustrated throughout with 173 text illustrations after E. W. Kemble, photogravure of Karl Gerhardt's portrait bust of Clemens, Somewhat rubbed, restoration at extremities, hinges repaired, slight damping to the fore-edge of the half-title and first few leaves, some marginal fingersoiling and occasional edge-splitting, about very good. First American edition, first printing. This copy inscribed on the front pastedown by Twain with an autograph quotation from Pudd'nhead Wilson: "Mr. Charles Aubrey Slosson his Book. Consider well the proportions of things: it is better to be a young June-bug than an old bird of paradise. Truly yours, Mark Twain. Dec./05." Further similarly inscribed on the facing free endpaper by Twain's friend, the journalist, Poultney Bigelow: "Don't go to College if you seek Knowledge of humanity - in my case I learned to row and box and sipped at the fountain of youth - so be warned by your friend, Poultney Bigelow, October 10 1946 at Malden on Hudson." The traditional issue points on this book have recently been persuasively reassessed. The first printing of 30,000 copies was done using electrotype plates, produced simultaneously on different presses, hence minor variations within the first printing due to damaged plates. Only three substantive changes were introduced after the first printing: at p. 13 the erroneous page reference "88" was changed to "87"; at p. 57 the misprint "with the was" was corrected to "with the saw"; and at p. 9 the misprint "Decided" was corrected to "Decides" (this last change overlooked by Johnson, Blanck et al.) These are the only points to distinguish between the first two printings, and our copy has all three in first state. Of the traditional issue points, this copy has p. 155 with the final 5 extending below the first two numbers and the cancel p. 283 with the suggestive illustration cleaned up, as always in cloth copies. The frontispiece is in the first state with the table cloth visible and unsigned on the finished edge of the bust, but this was separately printed and inserted in copies at random, and so has no bearing on priority. Copies were issued in leather bindings (sheep or three-quarters morocco), in blue cloth for those who wanted it uniform with Tom Sawyer and, as here, in green cloth. There is no priority between them: all were first available to the public on the same day in February 1885.

Near fine, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, mostly to bottom edge, bright spine, clean boards, minor split to the paper hinge inside the front cover, binding sturdy and hinges secure, former owners' inscriptions to the front pastedown, a few faint spots to the page edges, else fine. Overall, a fresh and sturdy unsophisticated copy. Housed in a custom black moiré slipcase. BAL 3415. This copy of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the first American editions issued in a green cloth binding. Other bindings for this title include blue cloth, library (sheep) binding, and deluxe (half morocco) binding. While most copies of Huckleberry Finn in all binding variants have a third state title leaf, as "no copy of the published book has been seen, or reported, with the copyright notice dated 1885," this copy has the second-state title page - a cancel leaf that preceded the third-state conjugate leaf, indicating that it may be an earlier issue than the copies with the title leaf in the third state. Additionally, this cloth bound copy contains the definitive issue points on pages 13 and 57, as well as nearly all of the issue points found in cloth copies, with the exceptions of pages 155 and 283; notably, page 283 is usually found in the third state in cloth bindings, and the uncorrected illustration with the curved fly is found almost exclusively in the sheep-bound copies and BAL notes that "no examined copy of the published book has the defaced plate" indicative of the second state. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a pseudo companion novel to Twain's highly successful Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876); although both are set in the antebellum South, Tom Sawyer is the tale of a young boy's mischievous adventures, while Huckleberry Finn involves a disenfranchised youth's moral dilemmas about social conflict. Huckleberry Finn is a youth who runs away from his alcoholic father and befriends Jim, a run-away African-American slave seeking freedom in the North. The dialog of the text features local dialects drawn from Twain's experiences living in the South. When it was first published in the United States in 1885, Huckleberry Finn was highly scrutinized and was banned by several libraries. Interestingly, the text was banned not for its saturation of racist vocabulary and prejudiced world-views, but for its depiction of criminal, lower class white Americans. Although it continued to be challenged in the 20th century for its depiction and treatment of African-Americans, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remains one of the Great American Novels. Indeed, Ernest Hemingway proclaimed that it was the beginning of American literature: "There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Porträts von Adolph von Menzel

1885. . Karl Stauffer-Bern (1857 Trubschachen - 1891 Florenz). S. 57 Nr. 13 III.

He also says that the title page and page 283 are tipped-in. Additional first edition points that he doesn't mention are: the frontispiece portrait of Mark Twain is by the Heliotype Printing Company, and Mark Twain's bust is on a cloth covered table; the contents heading for chapter 6 reads "decided", later changed to "decides"; page 143 line 7 has a broken small "b"; and page 161 doesn't have the number 11 signature mark; the title page has the 1885 date, with a copyright date of 1884.

Without the two folding maps. (Cordier, 1013)
