Russian Projects against India. From the Czar Peter to General Skobeleff

London, Remington & Co., , 1885. Octavo. Original brown cloth, title gilt to spine, decoration in black to the upper board. Folding coloured map frontispiece. Light browning, front hinges cracked but holding, a little rubbed at the extremities, overall very good. First Edition. Written at the height of Russophobe fears inspired by the Great Game, this is a history of Russia's activities in the Central Asian khanates - Perovski's ill-fated march to Khiva, Ignatiev's mission to Khiva and Bokhara, Kauffmann's expedition to Khiva in 1873 - interpreted as a threat to Afghanistan, the Pamirs and through them British India. Sutherland was for a time the Russian correspondent for the Illustrated Times and was "well versed in Russian politics and literature." (ODNB)

More New Arabian Nights the Dynamiter

Longmans, Green, and Co., London 1885 - 207pp. 1885. First edition. 12mo. In original publisher's paper wraps with steel engraving of a man climbing a ladder. A good only copy of this very delicate but scarce publication. The whole housed in a near contemporary navy blue-cloth covered card slipcase. This slipcase with a paper title block - with the ink author's name and title to it (slight loss to one corner of title block). The book has a very neat contemporary owner's initials in ink to the half-title page. Only around 30-50 percent of the spine strip survives. A number of page corners to the head and tail have been turned (now largely unturned). There is significant splitting between two gatherings - the two 'halfs' of the book now holding by several cords. Several short tears to the peripheries of the front card cover - all expertly repaired. A good copy of a scarce first edition in a very original format.         Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade)

New York: Charles L. Webster and Company,, 1885. With one hundred and seventy-four illustrations. Square octavo, original green pictorial cloth, titles to spine and front cover in gold and black, recased, spine restored head and tail. Green morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. Illustrated throughout with 173 text illustrations after E. W. Kemble, photogravure of Karl Gerhardt's portrait bust of Clemens, Somewhat rubbed, restoration at extremities, hinges repaired, slight damping to the fore-edge of the half-title and first few leaves, some marginal fingersoiling and occasional edge-splitting, about very good. First American edition, first printing. This copy inscribed on the front pastedown by Twain with an autograph quotation from Pudd'nhead Wilson: "Mr. Charles Aubrey Slosson his Book. Consider well the proportions of things: it is better to be a young June-bug than an old bird of paradise. Truly yours, Mark Twain. Dec./05." Further similarly inscribed on the facing free endpaper by Twain's friend, the journalist, Poultney Bigelow: "Don't go to College if you seek Knowledge of humanity - in my case I learned to row and box and sipped at the fountain of youth - so be warned by your friend, Poultney Bigelow, October 10 1946 at Malden on Hudson." The traditional issue points on this book have recently been persuasively reassessed. The first printing of 30,000 copies was done using electrotype plates, produced simultaneously on different presses, hence minor variations within the first printing due to damaged plates. Only three substantive changes were introduced after the first printing: at p. 13 the erroneous page reference "88" was changed to "87"; at p. 57 the misprint "with the was" was corrected to "with the saw"; and at p. 9 the misprint "Decided" was corrected to "Decides" (this last change overlooked by Johnson, Blanck et al.) These are the only points to distinguish between the first two printings, and our copy has all three in first state. Of the traditional issue points, this copy has p. 155 with the final 5 extending below the first two numbers and the cancel p. 283 with the suggestive illustration cleaned up, as always in cloth copies. The frontispiece is in the first state with the table cloth visible and unsigned on the finished edge of the bust, but this was separately printed and inserted in copies at random, and so has no bearing on priority. Copies were issued in leather bindings (sheep or three-quarters morocco), in blue cloth for those who wanted it uniform with Tom Sawyer and, as here, in green cloth. There is no priority between them: all were first available to the public on the same day in February 1885.

        Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

New York: Charles L. Webster and Company 1885 - Illustrated with 174 illustrations by Edward Windsor Kemble. First edition, with many of the first issue points, including: cancel title leaf with the copyright notice dated 1884 (second state), the illustration "Him and Another Man" listed as page 88 on page 13, "with the was" on page 57, page 283 in the third state with a straight fly on a cancel leaf, third state page 155 with the final five larger than the first, page 161 lacking the signature mark, leaf 238 pasted under the terminal endpaper, frontispiece in the second state with no tablecloth visible and with Heliotype Printing Company imprint. Publisher's decorative green cloth, with an illustration of Huck Finn to the front panel in green and gilt, lettered in green and gilt, pale peach endpapers. Near fine, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, mostly to bottom edge, bright spine, clean boards, minor split to the paper hinge inside the front cover, binding sturdy and hinges secure, former owners' inscriptions to the front pastedown, a few faint spots to the page edges, else fine. Overall, a fresh and sturdy unsophisticated copy. Housed in a custom black moiré slipcase. BAL 3415. This copy of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the first American editions issued in a green cloth binding. Other bindings for this title include blue cloth, library (sheep) binding, and deluxe (half morocco) binding. While most copies of Huckleberry Finn in all binding variants have a third state title leaf, as "no copy of the published book has been seen, or reported, with the copyright notice dated 1885," this copy has the second-state title page - a cancel leaf that preceded the third-state conjugate leaf, indicating that it may be an earlier issue than the copies with the title leaf in the third state. Additionally, this cloth bound copy contains the definitive issue points on pages 13 and 57, as well as nearly all of the issue points found in cloth copies, with the exceptions of pages 155 and 283; notably, page 283 is usually found in the third state in cloth bindings, and the uncorrected illustration with the curved fly is found almost exclusively in the sheep-bound copies and BAL notes that "no examined copy of the published book has the defaced plate" indicative of the second state. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a pseudo companion novel to Twain's highly successful Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876); although both are set in the antebellum South, Tom Sawyer is the tale of a young boy's mischievous adventures, while Huckleberry Finn involves a disenfranchised youth's moral dilemmas about social conflict. Huckleberry Finn is a youth who runs away from his alcoholic father and befriends Jim, a run-away African-American slave seeking freedom in the North. The dialog of the text features local dialects drawn from Twain's experiences living in the South. When it was first published in the United States in 1885, Huckleberry Finn was highly scrutinized and was banned by several libraries. Interestingly, the text was banned not for its saturation of racist vocabulary and prejudiced world-views, but for its depiction of criminal, lower class white Americans. Although it continued to be challenged in the 20th century for its depiction and treatment of African-Americans, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remains one of the Great American Novels. Indeed, Ernest Hemingway proclaimed that it was the beginning of American literature: "There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Porträts von Adolph von Menzel

1885. . Karl Stauffer-Bern (1857 Trubschachen - 1891 Florenz). S. 57 Nr. 13 III.

He also says that the title page and page 283 are tipped-in. Additional first edition points that he doesn't mention are: the frontispiece portrait of Mark Twain is by the Heliotype Printing Company, and Mark Twain's bust is on a cloth covered table; the contents heading for chapter 6 reads "decided", later changed to "decides"; page 143 line 7 has a broken small "b"; and page 161 doesn't have the number 11 signature mark; the title page has the 1885 date, with a copyright date of 1884. Without the two folding maps. (Cordier, 1013)

Der Glaube im Neuen Testament. Eine Untersuchung zur neutestamentlichen Theologie. [HANDEXEMPLAR SCHLATTERS] Eine von der Haager Gesellschaft zur Vertheidigung der christlichen Religion gekrönte Preisschrift.

Leiden: E.J.Brill. Erste Ausgabe.. Exlibis Schlatters in beiden Bänden ("Er trägt alles durch das Wort seiner Kraft" - Dr.Adolf Schlatter). Das Werk voller umfangreicher Annotation in Schlatter's Hand. Einige wenige Annotationen in Stenographie.. Erste Ausgabe. Leiden, E.J.Brill, 1885. Gross-Oktav. Durchschossenes Exemplar welches speziell für Schlatter in zwei Bände aufgeteilt wurde. Durchgehende Paginierung. Band I: V, 304 Seiten / Band II: Seiten 305 - 591. Privates Halbleder der Zeit. Rücken teilweise angebrochen. Exlibis Schlatters in beiden Bänden ("Er trägt alles durch das Wort seiner Kraft" - Dr.Adolf Schlatter). Das Werk voller umfangreicher Annotation in Schlatter's Hand. Einige wenige Annotationen in Stenographie.

        Artocarpus Polyphema [Chempedak]

Brussels: C. Muquardt, 1885. Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from a few light foxing marks. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. Closely related to the Jackfruit, the Chempedek is a large deciduous fruit tree native to Malaysia and Indonesia. Its large fleshy fruit is extremely fragrant and a popular source of food. In her early twenties, Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support. With great ingenuity, she managed to get a selection of her paintings chromolithographed and published under the title Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java Peints D'Après Nature , the first edition of which appeared in 1863-4. "Van Nooten was clearly more than competent, for the splendid tropical plants... have been depicted with great skill. She managed to accentuate the splendour of each species by adopting a style that combined great precision and clarity with a touch of neo-Baroque exuberance, revelling in the rich forms and colours of the tropics."         Mangifera Indica [Mango Tree]

Brussels: C. Muquardt, 1885. Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from some minor soiling and a few light foxing marks. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. Indigenous to southern Asia, the Mango tree, of which there are numerous varieties, belongs to the order of Anacardiaceae . It's sweet, fleshy fruit is among the most popular and well-known of all tropical fruits. In her early twenties, Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support.         Zalacca Edulis [Salak Palm]

Brussels: C. Muquardt, 1885. Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from some very minor foxing and a small orange spot in the lower right corner of the sheet. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. Similar to the sago tree, the Salak Palm is native to Indonesia, and its edible spherical fruit is covered by a prickly, lizard-like epidermis. It belongs to the order of Palmaceae , which, as Hoola Van Nooten remarks, was regarded by the renowned English botanist John Lindley as "the most interesting of the vegetable kingdom; as well as on account of the majestic aspect of their towering stems, crowned with foliage still more gigantic, as from the character of their grandeur which they impress upon the landscape of the countries they inhabit; their immense value to mankind as affording nourishment, clothing and numerous objects of economical importance, and the prodigious development of their reproductive organs." Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. Averrhoa Bilimbi [Bilimbi or Cucumber Tree]

Also described by some as the Apple tree of India, the Bilimbi is one of the chief species of the Oxalideae order. It originated from Indonesia, most likely in the Moluccas, and is commonly found in Burma, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and India. Its acidic fruit is frequently used for stain removal and as a main ingredient in pickle relish and chutney. Still in her early twenties, Berthe Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he soon died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support.       C. Muquardt, Brussels 1885 - Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from a few light foxing marks. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. A medium-sized tree from Southeast Asia, the Xanthochymus Dulcis yields three different types of fleshy bright orange fruit. This elegant print depicts the sweet, edible Manies variety, which is frequently grown by the natives of Java. Still in her early twenties, Berthe Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support.         Document - Frederick Douglass

Washington, D.C. 1885 - Printed document signed "Fr. Douglass." Single folio leaf folded to form four pages, worn at crease; notary blind-stamp. Deed transferring land from Senator John Sherman and John T. Arms, a real estate and insurance agent, to Eleanor G. Taylor; docketed, with several notations in Douglass' hand ----- Douglass, recorder of deeds for the District of Columbia, admired John Sherman, the venerable statesman who pervaded the Senate for more than three decades. In an 1859 "Self Made Men" lecture, Douglass commended Sherman's unpopular defense of Hinton R. Helper's contentious "The Impending Crisis" (1857). He supported the Ohioan's efforts to secure the Republican nomination in 1880, 1884, and 1888, later saying, "not only was Sherman the man fitted for the presidency but he was the man whose attitude towards the newly enfranchised colored citizens of the South best fitted him for the place." On February 25, 1895, the 71-year-old senator attended the memorial service for Douglass in Washington's august Metropolitan A.M.E. Church ---- Douglass was on the United States government payroll for ten years - marshal for the District of Columbia (under Rutherford B. Hayes, while Sherman was secretary of the treasury), recorder of deeds for the District of Columbia (under James A. Garfield), and minister resident to Haiti (under Benjamin Harrison). Although his political aspirations well exceeded the offices proffered him, Douglass, particularly as recorder, served without complaint or outward animosity. “Happy for me the American people possess in large measure a proneness for acquiescence,” he later attested in "Life and Times of Frederick Douglass." “I was the first colored man who held the recorder office. In this, if not anything else, I have opened the gate and led the way upward for the people with whom I am identified.” ---- Douglass held the recorder post between 1881 and 1886. The duties, he said, "though specific, exacting, and imperative neither fettered my pen nor silenced my voice in the cause of my people." [Attributes: Signed Copy]
