Bound with this copy is the scarce 44 page supplement published in 1894 that includes extracts of correspondence regarding the queen, notes on the role of the theater at the Petit Trianon, additional discoveries from the library of Marie Antoinette, notes on the salon de musique or Belvédère, and the text of a play performed at the opening of the Théâtre de Trianon in 1780. 8vo (26.1 x 17.5 cm); xvi + 470 + 44 pp. with 22 text illustrations + 20 gravure plates from plans, photographs and early prints + 2 color heliochrome plates from photographs.         NEW ENGLAND TELEPHONE & TELEGRAPH COMPANY. LIST Of SUBSCRIBERS Throughout the State of Maine. December, 1885.

Boston: Published by M. H. Cleaves, 91 Oliver St. B. Thurston & Company, Printers. 1885. 60 pp. The New England Telephone and Telegraph Company was formed February 12, 1878, by investors in the states of Massachusetts & Rhode Island at the behest of an agent of Gardiner Greene Hubbard, the father-in-law of telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell. A short 7 years later, as the title page states in this 1885 book, "This company [NET&T] owns and operates all of the territory formerly owned by the Telephone Despatch Co., Boston & Northern Telephone Co., National Bell Telephone Co. of Maine, Suburban Telephone Company, Granite State Telephone Co., etc., etc." Eventually, and today, they are known as the New AT&T. No copies located on OCLC. Considering that NET&T's 1st instruction to Subscribers [p. 3] was "Destroy All Old Lists.", this a wonderful, and rare, surviving artifact from the early history of telephony. Wrappers chipped & worn, with a later prior owner application of a translucent tape to spine. Wear & chipping to lower corner of first few leaves. Tape repaired closed horizontal tear to rear wrapper. A Good, complete copy of this rare item of telephony history.

ORIGINAL INK DRAWING WITH CERTIFICATES AND ORIGIN OF VINCENT VAN GOGH 1885

1885 DIBUJO ORIGINAL A TINTA SOBRE PAPEL CON CERTIFICADOS Y PROCEDENCIA DE VINCENT VAN GOGH 1885. 27.1X20.2. ORIGINAL DIBUJANDO ARBOLES EN EL CAMPO Y A LA MANERA PICTORICA DE VINCENT. REF PICS 1. Bien.

Cabinet Card Photograph of a Woman by Chicago's Only Professional Woman Photographer

Chicago: Miss Nikodem. [circa 1885]. Image measures "4" x 5.5" on a 4.25" x 6.5" card printed at the bottom with the imprint of Miss Nikodem with her Chicago address. Slight wear, just about fine. Excellent and beautifully composed image of an unidentified and well-dressed bespectacled woman with an elaborate hat, possibly in mourning dress, with rich photographic tones.According to Origin, Growth, and Usefulness of the Chicago Board of Trade: Its Leading Members, and Representative Business Men in other Branches of Trade (1885): "Miss A.M. Nikodem, Photographic Artist. No. 701 West Madison Street. - One of the most popular and finely appointed photographic studios in Chicago is that conducted by Miss A.M. Nikodem, who succeeded Mr. M. T. Baldwin one year ago. This lady, who is regarded as one of the most skillful and accomplished photographic artists in the city, occupies an entire two-storied building completely equipped with all modern improvements and appliances and her elegantly furnished parlors are the resort of the elite of Chicago. Miss Nikodem is the only lady in the city who give personal attention to the taking of pictures, etc., and having had an extended practical and theoretical training she has attained a marked perfection in her art. In social circles Miss Nikodem occupies a prominent position both as a skillful artist and estimable lady, while in the business world she is held in high esteem as an enterprising and capable woman."Nikodem occupied the studio at this address from 1885-1891, and then moved to another location. 1895 is the last year in which she seems to be listed in Chicago city guides. Despite her prominence, photographs from her studio are exceptionally uncommon. Nikodem's skill is fully on display in this portrait. The three or four other examples of her work we could find, all in library special collections, are all of women or girls, and they display a uniform artistic excellence and technical photographic skill. .

ORIGINAL INK DRAWING WITH CERTIFICATES AND ORIGIN OF VINCENT VAN GOGH 1885

1885 DIBUJO ORIGINAL A TINTA SOBRE PAPEL CON CERTIFICADOS Y PROCEDENCIA DE VINCENT VAN GOGH 1885. 27.1X20.2. ORIGINAL DIBUJANDO ARBOLES EN EL CAMPO Y A LA MANERA PICTORICA DE VINCENT. REF PICS 1. Bien.

Yokohama.. Meij 18. 1885.. Two volumes, Japanese thread binding full page and single two-color woodblock prints, folio (14 x 9 1/2 inches, 35.5 x 24.5cm). First volume: 4 pages of text followed by 24 single page woodblock prints and 21 double page woodblock prints. Second volume: 4 pages of text followed by 41 single page woodblock prints and 7 double page, plus ONE INCOMPLETE DOUBLE PAGE PRINT (ie one page present). There are 93 (only) complete images, plus one "half" image; complete pagination is not possible as the plates are not numbered. A previous owner has numbered the pages in pencil at a corner or upper edge of each image. The covers are worn and lightly soiled, the paper title label of the second volume has some paper loss, a few brush marks below the title labels, the thread binding on the first volume is almost completely disintegrated with the text block loose, chips and a little paper loss to the interior front cover title sheets, two of the folded sheets have split along the outside edge (not affecting the plates). The plates are all in very good clean condition. Exquisite prints of birds and plants in subtle shades of black, grey, salmon, brown, with yellow and pink, inspired by Kono Bairei's album of bird and flower prints (1881-1884), but here in an impressive large size. These folio volumes, mimicking the impressive folio natural history volumes of nineteenth century Europe, were used to great effect by Japanese natural history artists of the Meiji era. .

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade)

New York, Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885., 1885. First Edition, earliest state of the cloth issue, now finely rebound in full green morocco, with the original cloth covers preserved at rear. Large octavo, pp366. Illustrated throughout. Internally clean save for the occasional thumbmark, portrait is creased with an old (discreet) repair to rear. Binding features raised bands to spine with gilt titles and decoration, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With the following issue points confirming this as one of the initial cloth copies: p.13: the illustration captioned "Him and another Man" is listed, wrongly, as at p.88; p.57: the eleventh line from the bottom reads: "...with the was..."; p.155: with the final five lacking; p.161: lacks the signature mark 11 at the bottom of the page. In addition, the portrait frontispiece has the tablecloth, or scarf, clearly visible. The contentious 'bulging fly' plate (p.283) was only included in publisher's leather copies and is therefore not pertinent to cloth copies. A fine copy of a rare printing. Blanck [3415]. BMC No261, p.90-93.

A person living in Berlin has sent me a translation of it and I have been particularly pleased about all the good you said of my work.
