Personal Memoirs of U S Grant

New York, Charles L. Webster & Co.,, 1885-6. 2 volumes, octavo. Publisher's de luxe brown half morocco, spine gilt in compartments, gilt medallic roundels to the boards, edges and endpapers marbled. Engraved portrait frontispiece, one etched plate and one folding facsimile to each, 47 full-page plans in all, folding map at the rear of Volume II. Light edgewear, textblock lightly toned, and volume 2 shows moderate wear to spine. Binding firm and textblock crisp. An excellent set. First edition. Mark Twain was resounding in his praise of Grant's prose: "this is the simple soldier, who, all untaught of the silken phrase-makers, linked words together with an art surpassing the art of the schools and put into them a something which will still bring to American ears, as long as America shall last, the roll of his vanished drums and the tread of his marching hosts." That Twain was essentially the publisher of the work should not entirely devalue his judgement. Grant's autobiography sold over 300,000 sets and has remained continually in print since its first appearance.

Brand-New Ballads by Charles G. Leland, ?Hans Breitmann,? with Many Illustrations by Hal Ludlow, Thomas Dalziel, and the Author

Small 8vo. London: ?Fun? Office, 1885. Small 8vo, vi, 149 pages, illustrated throughout. A.N.s. by Leland tipped in between front endpapers, with tissue guards; original pen & ink sketch by Leland tipped onto flyleaf. Engraved bookplates of the Dalziel family and of William Harris Arnold. Contemporary deep red straight-grain patterned calf, backstrip gilt, upper cover rehinged. First edition; a second edition was issued in London later in 1885, but apparently there was no American edition. Charles Godfrey Leland (1824-1903) was a busy journalist and editor until his "Hans Breitmann Ballads," humorous verses written in an atrocious German accent, made him famous around the world. He was also a keen student of folklore and language and is still cited as an authority (sometimes a false authority) on Gypsies and Witchcraft. Leland contributed many comic poems to "Fun", a humorous periodical conducted for many years by the Dalziels, the large and highly skilled clan of illustrators and engravers that played a key role in English illustration of the Victorian era. On December 25, 1880, Leland dispatched from Philadelphia to the Dalziels in London the manuscript of a poem, "The Legend of St. Anthony," along with a sketch illustrating the poem and a brief letter of transmittal. The poem tells of a nouveau riche New Yorker who commissions a Florentine artist to paint his features into a portrait of the early Church father St. Anthony. When the portrait arrives in New York, it is publicly unveiled, and Mr. Anthony is humiliated to see that the painter has depicted him in dirty rags and almost hidden behind a huge pig, the symbol of the patron saint of swine. In his letter Leland declares that his poem is based on an actual incident that occurred more than thirty years previously.Clearly the Dalziels were charmed by the poem and illustration; and, after this book (printed at their own Caxton Press) was issued in wrappers, they had it elegantly bound with the letter and sketch inserted and affixed their own splendid wood-engraved circular bookplate, a tour de force of complex patterns around an intricate interlocking monogram of the letters in the word Dalziel. Later this volume was acquired by William Harris Arnold (1854-1923), one of the most eminent American book collectors, who was especially fond of association material. [BAL 11628.]

Although quarrels between RLS and his father about religion, his career and his marriage were upsetting to the family, the family remained close.         Orig. handwritten and signed letter for "Kjære Fru Munch Andersen." (Dear Mrs. Munch Andersen).

Dated "20.8.43". 2 pages 8vo. Written on blue paper w. the letterhead "Wedellsborg/ Ejby." The letter is a polite refusal to an invitation to give a lecture. It translates as thus: "I am very sorry/ that that you have not/ received an answer to your letter/ sooner. For about a month/ I have been travelling around Funen, and/ I have been staying numerous/ places, and unfortunately I have not/ received your letter, there/ has possibly been an incorrect re-addressing and thereby delay./ I am sorry that I can/ not accept your/ kind request to/ give a lecture at your place. -/ In the fall I will/ have so much to do that I can/ not accept any more/ engagements. -/ Kind regards/ Yours sincerely/ Karen Blixen-Finecke.". The legendary Danish writer, Karen Blixen-Finecke (pseudonym: Isak Dinesen) (1885-1962), was a Danish baroness, who married her cousin, the Swedish Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke, in 1914. They soon moved to Africa, where they ran a coffee-farm near Nairobi, and the happiest years of Blixen's life were spent here (she used to say that "Africa made me"). The farm in the Ngong Hills is the centre of her world famous novel, "Out of Africa". She divorced her husband, who was cheating on her and gave her syphilis, in 1922, and in 1932 she moved back to Denmark after the farm had gone bankrupt and her lover, Denys Finch-Hatton, had died in a plane-crash. She spent the remaining 30 years of her life in Denmark, and died a legendary writer. She greatly influenced writers and cultural personas of the generations to come, and many authors recognize the direct impact she has had on their writings. Several of her novels have been filmatized, most famously "out of Africa" with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize twice, she was elected honorary member of "The American Academy of Arts and Letters" (1957), and her portrait is printed on the Danish 50 kr. notes. She is the absolutely most famous of all modern Danish writers, and the only one of international fame

NEW ENGLAND TELEPHONE & TELEGRAPH COMPANY. LIST Of SUBSCRIBERS Throughout the State of Maine. December, 1885.

Boston: Published by M. H. Cleaves, 91 Oliver St. B. Thurston & Company, Printers. 1885. 60 pp. The New England Telephone and Telegraph Company was formed February 12, 1878, by investors in the states of Massachusetts & Rhode Island at the behest of an agent of Gardiner Greene Hubbard, the father-in-law of telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell. A short 7 years later, as the title page states in this 1885 book, "This company [NET&T] owns and operates all of the territory formerly owned by the Telephone Despatch Co., Boston & Northern Telephone Co., National Bell Telephone Co. of Maine, Suburban Telephone Company, Granite State Telephone Co., etc., etc." Eventually, and today, they are known as the New AT&T. No copies located on OCLC. Considering that NET&T's 1st instruction to Subscribers [p. 3] was "Destroy All Old Lists.", this a wonderful, and rare, surviving artifact from the early history of telephony. Wrappers chipped & worn, with a later prior owner application of a translucent tape to spine. Wear & chipping to lower corner of first few leaves. Tape repaired closed horizontal tear to rear wrapper. A Good, complete copy of this rare item of telephony history.

ORIGINAL INK DRAWING WITH CERTIFICATES AND ORIGIN OF VINCENT VAN GOGH 1885

1885 DIBUJO ORIGINAL A TINTA SOBRE PAPEL CON CERTIFICADOS Y PROCEDENCIA DE VINCENT VAN GOGH 1885. 27.1X20.2. ORIGINAL DIBUJANDO ARBOLES EN EL CAMPO Y A LA MANERA PICTORICA DE VINCENT. REF PICS 1. Bien.

Cabinet Card Photograph of a Woman by Chicago's Only Professional Woman Photographer

Chicago: Miss Nikodem. [circa 1885]. Image measures "4" x 5.5" on a 4.25" x 6.5" card printed at the bottom with the imprint of Miss Nikodem with her Chicago address. Slight wear, just about fine. Excellent and beautifully composed image of an unidentified and well-dressed bespectacled woman with an elaborate hat, possibly in mourning dress, with rich photographic tones.According to Origin, Growth, and Usefulness of the Chicago Board of Trade: Its Leading Members, and Representative Business Men in other Branches of Trade (1885): "Miss A.M. Nikodem, Photographic Artist. No. 701 West Madison Street. - One of the most popular and finely appointed photographic studios in Chicago is that conducted by Miss A.M. Nikodem, who succeeded Mr. M. T. Baldwin one year ago. This lady, who is regarded as one of the most skillful and accomplished photographic artists in the city, occupies an entire two-storied building completely equipped with all modern improvements and appliances and her elegantly furnished parlors are the resort of the elite of Chicago. Miss Nikodem is the only lady in the city who give personal attention to the taking of pictures, etc., and having had an extended practical and theoretical training she has attained a marked perfection in her art. In social circles Miss Nikodem occupies a prominent position both as a skillful artist and estimable lady, while in the business world she is held in high esteem as an enterprising and capable woman."Nikodem occupied the studio at this address from 1885-1891, and then moved to another location. 1895 is the last year in which she seems to be listed in Chicago city guides. Despite her prominence, photographs from her studio are exceptionally uncommon. Nikodem's skill is fully on display in this portrait. The three or four other examples of her work we could find, all in library special collections, are all of women or girls, and they display a uniform artistic excellence and technical photographic skill. .
