HISTORICAL SKETCH BOOK AND GUIDE TO NEW ORLEANS AND ENVIRONSWITH MAP. Illustrate

New Orleans 1885, Coleman. Brown cloth, gold & black stamped. very good, bright copy, solid, facsimile map, 324p., index,. 14 engravings, complete, Perkins p.8-10, 14 x 18 cm. R A R E. Second issue. LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF ONLY 500 COPIES. This is Hearn's fifth published title. * SUBTITLE: continued: "Edited and compiled by several leading writers of the New Orleans Press." * This obscure work came with a loose map laid inside the front cover, most all of which have now vanished from the majority of remaining copies. Where necessary in order to make the book complete we provide a facsimile copy of the original map in full size. The loosely inserted guide map, was an after thought so it was not ever attached or glued in. [See Perkins below]. * THE PLATES: The work was illustrated with a frontispiece and 13 original engravings inserted, not included in the pagination, most were done by Joseph Pennell. * The book contains exhaustive accounts of the traditions, historical legends, and remarkable localities of the Creole city. * Copies of this book were hawked by peddlers at the Exposition grounds. The period rumor was that Hearn had a romantic affair with a Creole woman named Mattie Foley. It is possible that her influence gave Hearn enough interest to write and edit this work. Hearn was also a resident of New Orleans for many years. Liberally extracted from Perkins, see below. * BINDING VARIANTS: This guide was done as a part of the celebrations for the Centennial Exposition for New Orleans. Per P. Perkins, this title was printed in a LIMITED EDITION OF 1000 COPIES, of which 500 were sent to D.H. Holmes in New Orleans, for distribution at the Exposition. See Perkins p.8 for details about the gray stiff wrappers edition. The balance of 500 copies were sold by the publisher. That edition was bound in reddish-brown covers, but the 500 copies sent to Holmes were stripped of their red cardboard covers and rebound in gray paper wrappers bearing the advertisement of D.H. Holmes on the front and back wrappers. Traces of the original Reddish- brown wrappers can be found under the gray on the spine. D. H. Holmes sent some of these Sketch Books to the Exposition grounds for sale by peddlers. Most of these copies had a paster put on the front cover showing a picture of a church with the lettering "Illustrated Guide & Sketch Book to New Orleans." Another small paster covered the price on the large paster. Some of the copies distributed by Coleman were bound in cloth." extracted from Perkins p.9. * EDITIONS: Perkins also discusses the points of the first, second and third issues which are clearly outlined in much detail. In essence, the book was for sale in three variant original bindings: cloth: brown, olive brown, dark brown or blue; brown [red-brick] stiff paper wrappers [THE FIRST EDITION]; gray wrappers. Per Perkins, there is NO priority or extra value in any one color cloth over the other [see Perkins p.10], but the FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ISSUE IS ABOVE ALL THE RAREST ORIGINAL EDITION OF ALL COPIES. * HEARN'S ROLE AND CONTRIBUTION: L. Hearn was the editor of this book and he also contribu- ted two essays to this guide: they are: PERE ANTOINE'S DATE PALM, pp.111-114; and also THE SCENES OF CABLE'S ROMANCES, pp.293-299. The celebrated George Cable et al were only a few of the many other contributors. * Hearn was a resident of New Orleans, and a frequent writer for local papers as well as being the author of his own books and translations. * * * AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE, IMPORTANT & EARLY HEARN ITEM * * * BIBLIOGRAPHY: HOWES: C574 BAL: 2340 & 7915 P.D & Ione Perkins: LAFCADIO HEARN A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HIS --WRITINGS, pp.8-10 * Variant edition covers and other images can be found on our web site. * Color scans can be sent by email.       New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. Front cover and spine gilt still bright. Internally quite a clean copy throughout. Spine extremities and corner tips worn. The following point are detailed; title-page is a cancel sheet, copyright page has 1884 as date, at p.143, the "l" in "Col" is missing and the "b" in body is broken, at p.155, the second "5" is in a different font, at p. 161, the signature mark "11" is missing, p.283 is a cancel sheet, the bust of Twain on the frontispiece shows the tablecloth clearly and has "Heliotype Printing Co.", blank leaf between last page of text and rear endpaper. In 1880, he and the President of the Iowa State Pharmaceutical Association urged UI officials to establish a pharmacy education program.         CONSECUTIVE RUN OF THE FIRST THIRTEEN SESSION LAWS OF THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF THE TERRITORY OF ARIZONA, 1865 - 1885].

Prescott, Tucson, and San Francisco. 1865-1885. - Thirteen volumes, publication details and pagination provided in the list below. Uniformly bound in 20th-century buckram, gilt leather labels. Minor shelf wear, some labels chipped. ink stamp, embossed blindstamps, but overall good. Arizona had been administered as part of the Territory of New Mexico until its seizure by the Confederacy following the Battle of Mesilla in 1861, though this was a short- lived conquest. A new Territory of Arizona, consisting of the western half of New Mexico Territory, was then declared in Washington, D.C., on February 24, 1863, and these are the published Acts of the first thirteen sessions of the territorial legislature. Arizona would not officially become a state until February 14, 1912. The first volume here is especially important, as it is among the earliest imprints published within the Territory, and it includes the Organic Act providing for temporary government. In his sale catalogue, Streeter writes of the first three volumes included here: "These laws, resolutions, and memorials of the first Legislative assembly of Arizona and those of the second and third Legislative assemblies, also in my collection, are an interesting source of contemporary information on mail routes, printing, railroads, Indian troubles, and for the general history of Arizona." The first volume alone sold for $225 in the Streeter sale. Few copies of the early volumes appear on the current market, with certainly nothing approaching this type of consecutive run. An especially rare set, virtually unobtainable on an individual basis. The works included here are as follows: 1) ACTS, RESOLUTIONS AND MEMORIALS, ADOPTED BY THE FIRST LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF THE TERRITORY OF ARIZONA. Prescott: Office of the Arizona Miner, 1865. 79pp. McMURTRIE (ARIZONA) 8. AII (ARIZONA) 8. STREETER SALE 507.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1885 - 1885 Wisden Paperback, Facsimile Spine, Very Good.

1885. This is a delightful 1885 Original Paperback Wisden, 22nd Edition, with facsimile spine. The covers are super, odd mark but amazing for well over 100 years old, internally it is a very bright book, the odd spot to the odd page but for 1885 it is as white as they come. Spine is of similar colour to the book, the advantage of the facsimile spine is that you can read it without fear of breaking it , plus it is cheaper than an original too.

Neueste Karte von America.... New Chart of America showing the tracks and distances of steam vessels, with the distances to the principal ports of Europe, to the great Lines of Railway and the submarine Cables, constructed for the Use of Geographie [sic.] commercial.... Carte Nouvelle de l'Amerique..

Stuttgart: Julius Maier, 1885. Tinted lithographic map, with title in German, English and French, with original outline colour, on six folding sheets, backed onto linen, and edged with blue cloth tape, in excellent condition, in modern blue cloth box. A rare and highly detailed monumental wall map of the Western Hemisphere This fascinating map excellently embodies the ethic of empiricist cartography that prevailed in the nineteenth-century. All of North and South America is depicted in great detail with very assured geographical accuracy for the time. A very attractive aesthetic effect is created, with landmasses tinted in a shade of orange, juxtaposed against the seas, which are coloured in a golden brown hue. The various political boundaries of the various states are outlined in bright, resplendent colours. The seas feature a wealth of hydrological information, most notably the great currents that traverse the oceans, notably the Humboldt Current in the Pacific and the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic. The lines of major shipping routes and the distances between key ports are also noted on the map. The depiction of North America is most interesting, while the American west had by this time been settled in many areas, not all of its territories had yet been admitted into the Union as states. The Canadian Prairies are captured just before the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, and the great wave of settlement that would result. The depiction of the Arctic is fascinating, as while the southern part of the Arctic Archepelago is charted, the most northerly regions, such as Ellesmere Island, are absent from the map, totally unknown to explorers. Alaska, which was purchased by the U.S. from Russia in 1867 is shown to be a complete wilderness. The islands of the Caribbean are shown to be almost entirely under the colonial hegemony of the various European powers, and the nations of South America exhibit very different borders than the ones which we are familiar with today. Colombia still owned Panama, and straight, arbitrary lines mark the international boundaries in the heart of the continent - the still mysterious Amazon Basin. Bolivia is shown to own a piece of the Pacific Coast by the Atacama Desert, and Peru's borders extend further south than they do today. The map shows these countries as they appeared before the Pacific War (1881-3), during which Chile roundly defeated its northern neighbours, and seized three littoral provinces. The map features six very interesting cartographic insets. In each of the top corners are insets of the polar regions showing both of these extremities of the globe to be somewhat enigmatic. Towards the lower left of the map is a detailed inset featuring the most populated region of the United States, the Washington-Boston corridor. Another inset depicts the elevation of the topography of North America, while towards the lower right of the map, another inset similarly details South America. A most curious aspect is featured in the final inset, an 'ethnographic map' of the Americas, which shows which parts of the hemisphere are inhabited by a majority of people of indigenous versus European ancestry.

        Mangifera Indica [Mango Tree]

Brussels: C. Muquardt, 1885. Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from some minor soiling and a few light foxing marks. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. Indigenous to southern Asia, the Mango tree, of which there are numerous varieties, belongs to the order of Anacardiaceae . It's sweet, fleshy fruit is among the most popular and well-known of all tropical fruits. In her early twenties, Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support. With great ingenuity, she managed to get a selection of her paintings chromolithographed and published under the title Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java Peints D'Après Nature , the first edition of which appeared in 1863-4. "Van Nooten was clearly more than competent, for the splendid tropical plants… have been depicted with great skill. She managed to accentuate the splendour of each species by adopting a style that combined great precision and clarity with a touch of neo-Baroque exuberance, revelling in the rich forms and colours of the tropics."         Xanthochymus Dulcis [Gamboge]

Brussels: C. Muquardt, 1885. Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from a few light foxing marks. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. A medium-sized tree from Southeast Asia, the Xanthochymus Dulcis yields three different types of fleshy bright orange fruit. This elegant print depicts the sweet, edible Manies variety, which is frequently grown by the natives of Java. Still in her early twenties, Berthe Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. Averrhoa Bilimbi [Bilimbi or Cucumber Tree]

Also described by some as the Apple tree of India, the Bilimbi is one of the chief species of the Oxalideae order. It originated from Indonesia, most likely in the Moluccas, and is commonly found in Burma, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and India. Its acidic fruit is frequently used for stain removal and as a main ingredient in pickle relish and chutney. Still in her early twenties, Berthe Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he soon died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support.         Zalacca Edulis [Salak Palm]

Brussels: C. Muquardt, 1885. Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from some very minor foxing and a small orange spot in the lower right corner of the sheet. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. Similar to the sago tree, the Salak Palm is native to Indonesia, and its edible spherical fruit is covered by a prickly, lizard-like epidermis. It belongs to the order of Palmaceae , which, as Hoola Van Nooten remarks, was regarded by the renowned English botanist John Lindley as "the most interesting of the vegetable kingdom; as well as on account of the majestic aspect of their towering stems, crowned with foliage still more gigantic, as from the character of their grandeur which they impress upon the landscape of the countries they inhabit; their immense value to mankind as affording nourishment, clothing and numerous objects of economical importance, and the prodigious development of their reproductive organs." Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. Das Elend der Philosophie. Antwort auf Proudhons „Philosophie des Elends“ von Karl Marx. Deutsch von E. Bernstein und K. Kautsky. Mit Vorwort und Noten von Friedrich Engels

Stuttgart, Druck und Verlag von J.H.W. Dietz 1885 - . Engels, Seite V). Catalogue Sraffa 3866, Braeuer S. 166, Sauer 5/1968: 2337 (2.Ausgabe), Menger Sp. 250 (spätere Ausgabe), Philosophen-Lexikon II, S. 128 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: (Tom Sawyer's Comrade)

Charles L. Webster and Company 1885 - Publisher's original ¾ leather, with marbled boards, page edges, pastedowns, and endpapers; one of just 500 copies printed (Raptis Rare Books, internet article, March 2014). //LAID in is a hand written response, declining an invitation, on a folded Quarry Farm labeled note, dated "Sept. 17/03", and SIGNED, "S. L. Clemens". (Quarry Farm was the home of Susan Langdon Crane, sister of Mark Twain's wife Olivia, and often the summer residence of the Twains. Mark Twain wrote, at least in part, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn while at Quarry Farm). The note sheet was created with a fold to yield 4 writing surfaces although this message is confined solely to the letterhead panel; The note was then manually folded, horizontally. It was written 5 weeks prior to the Twain family leaving for Italy and was penned during the last summer they spent together at Quarry Farm, as Olivia died in Italy the following June. //CONDITION OF THE NOTE: Very good-near fine, with a touch of toning, faint soiling, two miniscule specks on the letterhead panel, the faint horizontal crease, and light peeling on the rear panel where it had been affixed to some other surface. //CONDITION OF THE BOOK: The spine and corners have been professionally restored (corners still showing the bumped tips) and the marbled surfaces have some scratches and nicks. Interior condition problems: 1.) The pastedown/endpaper hinges have been reinforced, 2.) the front endpaper has a 1/8"x1/4" upper corner chip, 3.) there is scattered light foxing on the front and rear the preliminary pages, 4.) leaves 3-18 have areas of (food?) staining heaviest on page 17 with bleeding back to the copyright page and finally vanishing on page 36, 5.) the bottom corner of page 23-24 has a 1/2"x7/8" chip. 6.) the rest of the text has occasional soiling, some perimeter stains, a few tipped corners, one dog-eared page, and most pages have light perimeter toning. //ISSUE POINTS: The tissue guarded front plate is second state with no cloth visible under the bust. The title/copyright leaf is integral (lack of uniform opinion on this point), "Him and another man" is incorrectly listed at page 88 (instead of page 87 where it appears), page 57 has "with the was" on line 11 from the bottom, page 143 is missing the "l" in "Col." (which is part of the illustration at the top line of the text) and has the broken "b"in "body" on line 7, the final 5 of page 155 is lacking (again, lacks consensus), the illustration on page 283 is bound in with the noticeable curve on the fly of Silas Phelp's trousers and the final leaf is blank. //OVERALL: in spite of the aforementioned flaws, this is a very good and quite scarce 130 year old volume as several of these leather bound copies are in university and library collections, while others have surely been destroyed or lost, leaving precious few for private collections.
