Photographic Art Album. Hoffman House [Cover title]

[New York], 1885. First edition. Brown calf rebound with brown morocco, gilt titles. A very good expertly rebound copy with new brown morocco spine, minor soiling to the first few leaves, some old chromolithograph die cuts are mounted on the first five page, light foxing.. 23 cardboard lvs. Illus. with 46 large albumen photographs and 184 advertisement cards. Each side of the 23 thick board pages contains a matted albumen photograph and four matted advertising cards. Of the photographs, 42 are large portraits of notable actresses. Portraits of Grover Cleveland and his vice president, a portrait of the celebrated coronet player Liberati, and a photograph of the Owen papermaking establishment (possibly the producer of this album) are included. Of the 184 advertisements, 91 are photographs, the others are either engraved, lithographed, or chromolithographed. The large photographs measure 11 1 2 x 6 3 4 inches (29.2 x 17.1 cm), while the advertisements are mostly 8 x 4 inches (20.3 x 10.2 cm) or the reverse. Art Albums were created to entertain and inform visitors of the businesses and pleasures associated with the exclusive establishments in which they stood, either in the lobby or bar. This album for the Hoffman House is filled with seductive portraits of the stars of the "Belle Epoque", including Fannie Davenport, Adelina Patti, Ada Rehan, Lotta Crabtree, Modjeska, Ellen Terry, and Lillian Russell, plus dozens of advertisements for goods and services. All 42 actresses were posed and photographed by the greatest photographer of the American theatre, Napoleon Sarony (1821-1896), who once worked as an illustrator for Currier and Ives, and later was partner in a lithographic firm before he "established a studio on Broadway in New York in 1866-exactly the right time to take advantage of the American public's growing fascination for the theatre and to satisfy the accompanying demand for pictures of its stars. For the next thirty years Sarony photographed virtually every actor and actress working on the New York Stage" (Ben L. Bassham: "The Theatrical Photographs of Napoleon Sarony," Kent State University Press, 1978; p. 3) including Sarah Bernhardt. The Hoffman House, built in 1864, on land that was originally part of the Livingston and Hoffman estates, was the second luxury hotel in the Madison Square area, almost immediately headquarters for Generals Winfield Scott and Benjamin F. Butler when they were sent to New York that year to contain the bloody draft riots, and soon the meeting place for Democratic politicians: Boss Tweed met there with his henchmen; Grover Cleveland was a frequent visitor, and was living there when he was elected to the Presidency for his second term; William Randolph Hearst resided at the Hoffman when he first came to New York City. Edward S. Stokes, who shot financier James Fisk, Jr., became a partner in the hotel, serving as general manager until 1897. According to Kings 1897 Handbook of New York City " Hoffman House is famous the world over for its magnificent banquet-hall and its art-gallery" but the elegant barroom with its shocking painting "Nymphs and Satyrs" by Bougereau was even a more famous tourist attraction, where women were allowed to peek in one day a week. Hotel "art albums" rarely survived due to their massive size and limited production. We know of perhaps three other survivors: one for the Parker House of Boston at Brown University and for the Ponce De Leon Hotel of Saint Augustine at Jacksonville University; a third for the Stillman Hotel, Cleveland, was last in private hands.

Manuscript Letter Archive - Early Frozen Meat Trade - Documents Encased in Steel Tube - Signed Passport Issued in Lisbon

Egypt, 1885. Sudan, Abyssinia, Lower Egypt, 1885-1890. Manuscript passport and archive of autograph signed letters to George Westwood, a skilled mechanical engineer, pertaining to the final five years of twenty which he worked under contract for Siebe Gorman & Co. Together with two printed schematics of a steam operated apparatus. Nine (9) manuscript letters signed by administrators of the corporation, fastened together with a brad and contained in a metal tube measuring 25,5 cm in length, 4,5 cm diameter. One letter is siged in the original by William Augustus Gorman. Quarto single leaf passport, completed in manuscript, signed and stamped at Lisbon 7 September 1886, by in the original by British Consular Agent O'Donnell, inscribed and signed by a Lisbon official to verso, and measuring approximately 26 x 35 cm. Some creasing and age-toning to papers, otherwise in very good condition. George Westwood was a reputable British engineer commissioned as an agent of Siebe Gorman & Co. Engineers for some twenty years from 1870 to 1890, mainly responsible for the assembly and maintenance of ice machines and cooling devices abroad, and, according to one of the letters was involved in the formative years of the New Zealand frozen meat trade. Westwood travelled widely to inspect and repair equipment, which was in use both on steamships and in industrial plants. Five of the letters are instructions for work and addressed to Westwood directly; one is addressed to corporate client in Alexandria. Three are notes of gratitude from clients for superb service rendered. The last, penned on company letterhead in May 1890, is a most favourable reference for Westwood as he pursues new endeavours. This lot of correspondence sheds light on the importance of ice making for trade of perishable goods in the late nineteenth century, and places this engineer in Suakin in Sudan November 1885, immediately afterwards proceeding Zagazig, a town in Lower Egypt (circa December) 1885, the in Massowah, Eritrea 1888, in Jaffa, Israel October 1889, and in Alexandria, Egypt, November 1889. Also interesting to note, Westwood's work in the frozen meat trade was fairly early, essentially making him a pioneer in the industry. The historic journey of the 'Dunedin' - the first ship to carry frozen meat from New Zealand to the United Kingdom, took place in 1882, only three years prior to his work in Egypt and the Sudan. A rare manuscript passport accompanies the documents, issued to Westwood for one a voyage in 1886, granting passage from Lisbon to London. Excerpts from the letters: 19 November 1885. "Mr. G. Westwood, Suakin... Having now succeeded in putting Messr. Michelli's ice machine into thorough working order... I would ask you for a further period of say, six weeks, and to proceed to Zagazig, Egypt & survey an ice machine there which I am thinking of purchasing..." 29 October 1888. "Mr. G. Westwood, Massowah... we have today received a letter from Messrs. E. Tagliatore of Massowah, in which they ask us the following information, viz: The cost of machinery for the production of six tons of ice per 24 hours... our new patent Ammonia Compression Ice Making machine of this capacity, with condensing steam engine is £1475. The actual horsepower required for this is only 16..." 11 September 1889. "Messrs Allen, Alderson & Co. Engineers Alexandria... The bearer of this letter is one of our representatives... thoroughly acquainted with ice making and refrigerating machinery... " 13 September 1889. "Mr. G. Westwood... You will proceed to Jaffa... " 18 May 1890. "We have such pleasure in stating that Mr. Geo. Westwood has been in our employ fifteen years, during which time he has given us every satisfaction... a good deal of work in the erection of our ice machines, cold air machinery on shore, and superintended the erection of large cold air machines on board several steamers engaged in the New Zealand trade (meat trade). He has been to all parts of the world for us..." End excerpts. Messrs. Siebe Gorman & Co.: Engineers, Submarine and General Engineers was founded by Augustus Siebe (1788-1872) and focused mainly on the development of diving and breathing equipment, although they expanded to produce various mechanical devices unrelated to diving, such as large commercial ice machines, as seen here. . Very Good.

NP, Werdau 1885 - Elephant folio. Unpaginated. [80] leaves. Original half cloth over paper covered boards, with title lettered in gold on front cover. This striking manuscript is a late 19th-century German textile student workbook containing handwritten notes analyzing weaving patterns of various fabrics, yard runs, roping runs, mill arithmetic, etc. Includes drafts, hand-drawn diagrams, hand-colored patterns and mounted fabric samples (swatches). The mounted diagrammatic weaving pattern designs, at their simplest, have the quality of fine folk art, and the 7 full-page drawings of looms in the 'Jacquard' section are simply stunning. The work is presented in five sections covering various aspects of textiles and manufacturing process. Each of the five sections is preceded by an attractive handwritten title: Bindungslehre; Jacquard und Jacquard - Zeichnen; Muster - Ausnehmen / Muster - Berechnung; Musterberechnen; and Componieren. One mounted textile sample, and two original mounted colored diagrammatic designs for weaving patterns are dated '1885'. This workbook belonged to a student who attended the Higher School for Weaving at Werdau, a town located in Saxony (Germany), whose chief industries in the late 19th century were cotton, wool-spinning and the weaving of cloth. In all, this impressive manuscript contains 356 mounted and 19 loose diagrammatic weaving pattern designs, and 75 mounted and 6 loose textile samples. Text within printed red decorative borders. Binding rubbed along edges, and closed tears along front joint. Sporadic darkening along outer margin of leaves, not affecting text or samples. Text in German. Binding in overall fair, interior in good+, samples and waving patterns in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1885. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1885. Original blue cloth, beveled. First Edition, first printing (which consisted of 1000 copies). Stevenson began writing these verses as early as 1881: supposedly after perusing through Kate Greenaway's BIRTHDAY BOOK FOR CHILDREN, he observed "These are rather nice rhymes, and I don't think they will be difficult to do," and then proceeded to try his hand at them. It is hard to believe that the author of DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE and THE BODY-SNATCHER also wrote these sprightly juvenile rhymes, voiced as if by a child. The book is dedicated to Alison Cunningham, "Cummy," his childhood nurse-maid.~The spine lettering of this copy includes an apostrophe shaped like the digit "7", and the word "OF" is about the same size as the word "A"; some copies have a curved apostrophe, and some have a smaller "OF" (priority among these variations has been debated, but nothing is conclusive). The top edge of the pages is gilded, with the other edges uncut, which is the usual primary state. Inside, this copy has the ink-stamp "Printed in Great Britain" at the foot of the title verso, which we have seen before; though not mentioned by bibliographers, this would likely designate a copy of the first edition that was initially sent overseas (most likely to a colony).~This is a very good-plus copy, with a little rubbing at the very extremities of the volume but with scarcely any other wear or soil; the front paste-down bears two bookplates -- that of Luke A. Ionides (1837-1924, friend of Whistler and patron/collector of the arts), plus another partially removed. Beinecke 193; Princeton 20A copy 3; Prideaux pp 35-39.

ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). Scene: The Mississippi Valley. Time: Forty to Fifty Years Ago.

Charles L. Webster, New York 1885 - VERY GOOD TRUE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION AND FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Bright gold accents to black pictorial front cover and spine over green cloth. Tight, clean and square binding. Tight joints and hinges. Straight spine. Frontispiece drawing of Huckleberry Finn by E.W. Kemble; frontispiece portrait of Twain's bust sculpted by Karl Gerhardt; illustrated throughout with an additional 173 charming black and white illustrations by E.W. Kemble. Smooth, pale peach page block generally clean and unmarred with no bookplate, annotations, salient marks, tears or folds; no loose pages. Entirely original in unrepaired condition. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is considered Twain's masterpiece: a vivid depiction of people and daily life along the Mississippi River. Huck narrates, in Southern antebellum vernacular, his adventures with runaway slave, Jim, as they raft their way to freedom. Traditional points by BAL, Johnson, Blanck and McBride have proven inconclusive due to the random nature of electrotype printing. Our copy has all of only three first printing points: "Decided" on page 9, "88" on page 13 and "with the was" on page 57. Our desirable first state tissued frontispiece, with cloth and Heliotype credit, has no relation to printing order. Bindings of leather, blue cloth to match Tom Sawyer, and green cloth also have no relation to printing order. (MacDonnell, Collecting Mark Twain, IV. Huck Finn Among the Issue-Mongers) 1885 stated. 8vo (8 1/2 in. x 6 1/2 in.); 366 pp. Extremities lightly worn; graceful 1885 signature; scattered small stains; last few leaves lightly foxed; sturdy hinge with paper tears; trace of blind-stamped name of signer. Well-preserved first American edition and first illustrated edition of this defining novel of American literature. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Shucho Gafu (=Pictorial Monograph of Birds), in 3 volumes, housed in clasped chitsu case

Tokyo: Kinkado, 1885. First edition.. One tissue guard with small piece missing from the bottom outer corner, chitsu case with edge wear and some color restoration at corners; a bright and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. 75 leaves (un-numbered); 42 double-page hand-colored plates, 63 single-page hand-colored plates, 1 page of Japanese printing at the front and rear of each volume (page at the rear has two red seals), all pages within black frames. Original salmon-colored patterned wrappers, with original printed title label on the front of each cover, string-bound in Japanese-style (fukuro-toji), in original bone-clasped chitsu case, covered in dark blue silk, with printed title label on the front cover, lg 8vo (250 x 177 mm). This is the complete rare first edition of Numata's wood block prints of birds in their native habitats colored by hand. Numata's illustrations place much more emphasis on birds than on plants and, indeed, sometimes omit the latter entirely or present the plants in outline form only. The pages in these three volumes are imprinted with mica in Japanese double construction, and there is considerable usage of gauffrage in the production of the attractive plates. A previous owner has attached a very small typewritten label in the upper outer margin of each plate that lists the common name in English of each bird. Kashu Numata (1838-1901) came from Nagoya and was sufficiently well known that he received an imperial commission. This first printing of his work by Kinkado, published in 1885 (18th year of Meiji), is very rare. No ownership marks.

Cabinet Card Photograph of a Woman by Chicago's Only Professional Woman Photographer

Chicago: Miss Nikodem. [circa 1885]. Image measures "4" x 5.5" on a 4.25" x 6.5" card printed at the bottom with the imprint of Miss Nikodem with her Chicago address. Slight wear, just about fine. Excellent and beautifully composed image of an unidentified and well-dressed bespectacled woman with an elaborate hat, possibly in mourning dress, with rich photographic tones.According to Origin, Growth, and Usefulness of the Chicago Board of Trade: Its Leading Members, and Representative Business Men in other Branches of Trade (1885): "Miss A.M. Nikodem, Photographic Artist. No. 701 West Madison Street. - One of the most popular and finely appointed photographic studios in Chicago is that conducted by Miss A.M. Nikodem, who succeeded Mr. M. T. Baldwin one year ago. This lady, who is regarded as one of the most skillful and accomplished photographic artists in the city, occupies an entire two-storied building completely equipped with all modern improvements and appliances and her elegantly furnished parlors are the resort of the elite of Chicago. Miss Nikodem is the only lady in the city who give personal attention to the taking of pictures, etc., and having had an extended practical and theoretical training she has attained a marked perfection in her art. In social circles Miss Nikodem occupies a prominent position both as a skillful artist and estimable lady, while in the business world she is held in high esteem as an enterprising and capable woman."Nikodem occupied the studio at this address from 1885-1891, and then moved to another location. 1895 is the last year in which she seems to be listed in Chicago city guides. Despite her prominence, photographs from her studio are exceptionally uncommon. Nikodem's skill is fully on display in this portrait. The three or four other examples of her work we could find, all in library special collections, are all of women or girls, and they display a uniform artistic excellence and technical photographic skill. .

        Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. First American edition. Near Fine. A beautiful copy in the publisher's green cloth, stamped in black and gilt. Contains the three main first printing points: "Huck Decided" on p. 9; "Him and another Man" listed on p. 88; and "with the was" on p. 57. The other leaves were assembled at random and have no bearing on whether a copy is first or second printing, although variant states exist. A Near Fine copy with bright gilt and a tight page block. Very slight wear at the spine ends and corners and previous owner's markings on the front paste-down and first blank. Without repair or work of any kind. On the whole, an excellent copy of the book that Hemingway claimed was the source for all modern American literature and "the best book we've had." BAL 3415. MacDonnell, 31. "We are also presented with a chapter from an unpublished work by the writer, detailing the adventures of a Southwestern boy a quarter of a century ago, which places before us in vivid colors the rough, hilarious, swaggering, fighting, superstitious ways of the bygone raftsmen. Rude, sturdy, unflinching, and raw though the picture is, it is likely to stand a long while as a wonderful transcript from nature, and as a memorial of the phase of existence which is described that will not easily be surpassed in the future.
