        Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Charles L. Webster and Company, New York 1885 - A Very Good copy in the publisher's green cloth, stamped in black and gilt. Contains the three first printing points: "Huck Decided" on p. 9; "Him and another Man" listed on p. 88; and "with the was" on p. 57. The other leaves were assembled at random and have no bearing on whether a copy is first or second printing, although variant states exist. A Very Good copy with front hinge professionally closed at the lower edge and one tear on the free end paper closed. Previous owner's name stamped on the paste-down. Light foxing and soiling throughout. BAL 3415. MacDonnell, 31. Recounting the adventures of Huckleberry Finn as he flees his own abusive father and aids Jim in his escape from slavery, Twain's novel has been praised for its "distinctly American voice," putting at its center two common people who find an uncommon friendship. "Today perhaps the novel's greatest significance lies in its conception of childhood, as a time of risk, discovery, and adventure. Huck is no innocent: He lies, steals, smokes, swears, and skips school. He accepts no authority, not from his father or the Widow Douglas or anyone else. And it is the twin images of a perilous, harrowing odyssey of adventure and perfect freedom from all restraints that so many readers find entrancing" (Mintz). A metaphor for a young and rebellious nation, as well as its individualist inhabitants, Huckleberry Finn defies genre by being simultaneously an adventure story, a road novel, a coming of age tale, an expression of nostalgia for the expansive natural spaces lost to industrialization, and an exploration of race and class. Listed on the American Scholar 100 Best American Novels and one of the 100 Best Novels Written in English. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

1885 - In Three Volumes. London: Macmillan and Co., 1885. 2 pp undated Vol III ads. Original dark blue-green cloth. First Edition, which consisted of only 500 copies. These three volumes consist of fourteen tales that James had written some years earlier -- most from the 1870s, with some from the 1860s. Eight of them had been collected in America, either in A PASSIONATE PILGRIM (1875) or in THE AUTHOR OF BELTRAFFIO (1885, three months earlier). The other six appear here in book form for the first time: "A Day of Days," "A Landscape Painter," "Rose-Agathe," "Poor Richard," "Master Eustace" and "A Most Extraordinary Case." As James points out in his Vol I "Notice," ". these earlier stories have been in every case minutely revised and corrected -- many passages being wholly rewritten."~This set is in E&L's binding variant "a" (no priority) -- with the "V" no larger than the "OL" on the spines, and with dark brown coated endpapers. Condition is very good-plus, perhaps near-fine: there is minor wear in a few places along the volumes' joints (as usual -- the spines are wider on the shelf than the text blocks); a couple of the volumes have very slight bubbling of the cloth; and if one looks really closely one can see very faint evidence that lending library labels once adorned the front covers (true of most copies). It is an attractive set, with wear that is truly minor, and with the original endpapers in clean, un-cracked condition.~Supino 27.1.0; Edel & Laurence A27a; Blanck 10573; Sadleir 1290.       1885. This is a delightful 1885 Original Paperback Wisden, 22nd Edition, with facsimile spine. Spine is of similar colour to the book, the advantage of the facsimile spine is that you can read it without fear of breaking it , plus it is cheaper than an original too. Please note lettering on the spine of Wisdens started in 1887. A super addition to any collection.

Notiz über die Spectrallinien des Wasserstoffs

Leipzig: Druck von Metzger & Wittig, 1885. First edition offprint. Original wrappers. FIRST EDITION, EXCEEDINGLY RARE OFFPRINT IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS, of Balmer's famous formula for the wavelengths of lines in the hydrogen spectrum which, in the hands of Niels Bohr, provided the experimental basis for the quantum theory of the atom. "What Balmer did is slightly incredible. Having at his disposal only the four frequencies measured by Ångström, he fitted them with a mathematical expression that predicts an infinity of lines - and his formula is in fact correct!" (Pais, Niels Bohr's Times, p. 142). Shortly after 7 February 1913, Bohr heard of the Balmer formula. "'As soon as I saw Balmer's formula, the whole thing was immediately clear to me.' This is what Bohr told Léon Rosenfeld, his later assistant and close collaborator" (Kragh, Niels Bohr and the Quantum Atom, p. 56). "By 6 March [Bohr] had completed a paper containing its interpretation ['On the constitution of atoms and molecules']. That event marks the beginning of the quantum theory of atomic structure" (Pais, p. 144). "In the 1860s, shortly after the first quantitative measurements of spectral frequencies, a new game came to town, less ambitious than trying to find mechanisms for the origin of spectra: spectral numerology, the search for simple mathematical relations between observed frequencies. A textbook published in 1913, at practically the same time that Bohr interpreted the hydrogen spectrum, contains no less than twelve proposed spectral formulae. All these have long been forgotten except for one that will live forever: the Balmer formula for the spectrum of atomic hydrogen. "After receiving a Ph.D. in mathematics, Balmer became a teacher at a girl's school in Basel, and later also privatdocent at the university there. He was 'neither an inspired mathematician nor a subtle experimentalist, [but rather] an architect... [To him] the whole world, nature and art, was a grand unified harmony, and it was his aim in life to grasp these harmonic relations numerically.' In all he published three physics papers. The first two, completed at age 60, made him immortal...   "What Balmer did is slightly incredible. Having at his disposal only the four frequencies measured by Ångström, he fitted them with a mathematical expression that predicts an infinity of lines - and his formula is in fact correct! It reads in modernized notation vab = R(1/b2 - 1/a2) where the symbols have the following meaning. As usual, v stands for frequency. Each distinct pair of values for a and b denotes a distinct frequency. The index b takes on the values 1,2,3, … to infinity; a also runs through the integers but is always larger than b; R is a constant. Balmer found that he could fit the four Ångström lines very well if these are made to correspond to b =2 and a = 3,4,5,6, respectively, and if R (itself a frequency, a number of oscillations per second) is given the value R = 3.29163 x 1015 per second. Now, a century later, it is known that R = 3.28984186 x 1015 per second, which shows that Balmer's R value was correct to better than one part in a thousand. Having come that far, Balmer told the professor of physics at Basel University what he had found. This friend told him that actually another 12 lines were known from astronomical observations. Balmer quickly checked that these also fitted his formula, for a = 2, and b = 5 to 16. Whereupon he wrote his second physics paper, in which he stated that 'this agreement must be considered surprising to the highest degree'" (Pais, pp. 142-3). "Balmer's work served as a model for other series formulas, especially the more generalized formulas of Johannes Robert Rydberg (1854-1919), Heinrich Kayser (1853-1940), and Carl Runge (1856-1927)" (DSB). Balmer presented his work to the Basel Society of Natural Sciences on 25 June 1884, and it was published in two papers in the Verhandlungen der Naturforschenden Gesellschaft in Basel, vol. 7, pp. 548-560 & 750-752. The offered paper in Annalen der Physik is a combined version of these two papers. It might be supposed that the Verhandlungen printings would have priority, but in fact the Annalen printing, in the May 1885 issue, appears to have been published first. Volume 7 of the Verhandlungen consist of three issues, dated 1882, 1884 and 1885, the last containing the two Balmer papers. The 1885 issue has no publication date, but it contains a list of lectures delivered at the Society up to July 8, 1885, strongly suggesting that it was published no earlier than that date. Moreover, as there is only one issue of the Verhandlungen dated 1885, it would be surprising if it were published so early in the year. Provenance: August Kundt (1839-94), physicist, signature ('Kundt') on front wrapper. Born at Schworin, Mecklenburg, Adolph Eduard Eberhard Kundt studied at Leipzig under Hankel, Bruhns and Neumann, and at Berlin under Encke and Förster, first devoting himself to astronomy. Entering the laboratory of Magnus, in 1864 he graduated with a thesis on the polarization of light. He became a Privat Docent in Berlin in 1867 and then was successively professor of physics at Zurich Federal Technical High School (1868), at Würzburg (1870), and at Strasburg (1872), where he took a prominent part in the organization of the new university; of this he became rector in 1877. Finally, in 1888, he was chosen to succeed Helmholtz in the chair of experimental physics and as director of the Physical Institute at Berlin. His original researches were mainly in the domains of light and sound. By an ingenious method, now known as 'Kundt's tube,' he was able to determine the velocity of sound in various gases. In light, he made inquiries into the problems of anomalous dispersion by liquids and gases and by very thin metallic films. He us also known for 'Kundt's phenomenon,' the rotation observed, under the influence of a magnetic field, of the plane of polarization of light in certain gases. Leipzig: Druck von Metzger & Wittig, 1885. Offprint from Annalen der Physik und Chemie, Neue Folge Band XXV, pp. 80-87. Octavo (217 x 143 mm), original printed wrappers, very light wear to extremities otherwise fine, pp. [79:blank, 80] 81-87 [88:blank]. Extremely rare: OCLC/KVK locates copies of this offprint at Hamburg, Basel, Indiana, Caltech and Florida. We are not aware of any other copy having appeared on the market.

Certified copy of a legal documenting providing Grant right-of-way and the right to erect a beach house in Long Branch

Near Fine. One legal folio folded at the top to make four pages. Old folds as filed, soiling and small tears at the extremities of the folds, very good or better. A certified handwritten copy prepared in March 1885, shortly before Grant's death, of an 1880 contract between Grant and Lewis B. Brown of New York City. Signed by various clerks with one seal, but NOT SIGNED BY GRANT. The document gives Grant "...forever a right of way to the Atlantic Ocean from Seabrook (now Ocean) Avenue over and upon the lot... and the privilege to erect a bathing house of moderate size upon the Shore of said Ocean... ." Presumably the "bathing house" was what we'd call a cabana. The document has been docketed and stamped in 1887, two years after Grant's death. Grant's shore house served as the Summer White House during his two terms from 1869-1877, obviously this right-of-way was issued after his term was over.

1885. Hi, This lot is an 1885 Original Paperback Wisden. It has the Original Spine Paper without any Restoration. It is in Very Good Condition for the year and was in my set for a long time. The spine paper is excellent, just some minimal wear the corners. The book is very tightly bound, the covers are nice and bright and clean, the only downside is an inch crack to the spine paper but the book is still very tightly bound. Internally it is very nice and clean and hasn't been opened for a while. Minimal spotting. Tiny rounding of cover corners with minor thumbing. No restoration and a great Wisden.
