Imprimerie Nationale, Paris, 1883. 434 pp., half-title, 6 plans, ( 3 folding), tables, 1 folding map, figures in text, 14 engraved photographs by Chantre, title gilt on spine, original wrappers preserved, light scattered foxing, otherwise copy in good condition. Archives des Missions Scientifiques et Littéraires. Choix de rapport et instructions publié sous les auspices du Ministére de L’Instruction Publique et des Beaux Arts. Troisiéme serie, Tome X. Ernest Chantre ( 1843 - 1924) a leading French anthropologist who made research in North Africa, Syria, and Central Asia. This is a report he delivered to the minister of Fine Arts and education after a journey he made in Winter 1880 to Syria and Central Asia. During that journey he took with the help of the commander Barry ethnographic portraits of Kurds and Bedouins near Aleppo. These photographs are considered the earliest taken in that area. Chantre discovered during excavation at Bogazkoy the Royal archive of Hittites Kings. Accordingly he discovered the federal structure of the Hittite Empire, and the existence of eight different languages, which indicate the polyglot nature of the Hittite Empire. The Bogazkoy archive consists of nearly 25.000 cuneiform clay tablets. They are mostly on political, military, social, commercial, religious and artistic lives of Hittites and the neighbouring nations. Other reports published in this volume including: !- A report on Mauritania by R. de La Blanchére. II- A report on Abyssinia by A. Baffray. III- A scientific mission to Central Asia by Capus & Bonvalot. IV- A report on a mission … [Click Below for Full Description]

Galton, Francis.
Macmillan & Co, 1883. Polymath Francis Galton (1822-1911) was a Victorian-era statistician, progressive, polymath, sociologist, psychologist, anthropologist, eugenicist, tropical explorer, geographer, inventor, meteorologist, proto-geneticist, and psychometrician. He is perhaps best remembered today for the method he devised for classifying fingerprints that proved useful in forensic science. Inquiries contains => Galton's chief contributions to psychology. Strongly influenced by The Origin of Species (Darwin was a cousin), Galton began reflecting on the influence of heredity on the human race. Impressed by the fact that distinction of any kind is apt to run in families, he made a series of statistical investigations whereby he showed the heritability of genius of all kinds. Led to a conviction that the human race might gain an indefinite improvement by breeding the best and restricting the offspring of the worst, he set forth that conclusion in several books including this one. => To his study he gave the name "Eugenics," and it was in Inquiries that he coined that word along with the phrase "nature versus nurture." A photographic leaf offering "Specimens of composite portraiture personal and family" serves as frontispiece here, and the volume lists four plates, one => double-page and with multiple illustrations in color, at the end of the book. T.K. Penniman is quoted in Garrison and Morton as saying that in Inquiries Galton showed mathematically "the results of his experiments on the relations between the powers of visual imagery and of abstract thought, of the a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Welch, L. Edgar)
Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, London. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 1st edition, 1883. A Good copy. Small 12mo., iv, 201 pp. Bound in the publisher's white cloth, with title, border, planet Mars design and sky in red and blue. Spine darkened, with a small chip. Boards soiled. The first few signatures are loose, with some staining at the binding from the publisher's metal staples used with the stitched binding. The paste downs are beginning to tan. The text is clean. A Good copy. *** The likely author of this anonymous work is L. Edgar Welch, who also wrote under the pseudonym "Grip". A very early novel featuring Mars, appearing more than ten years before H.G. Well's WAR OF THE WORLDS. Welch's Martians are a branch of humanity, living in the water of Mars, rather than the land, and who have developed a very advanced Socialist system, far out-pacing their brethren of Earth. This work was criticized at the time of release for being a metaphor for Irish Home Rule. ***. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The lot gathered by General Sir Wingate of the Egyptian Intelligence Department, who facilitated the escape and assisted on the perilous three-week, 1000 km journey across the Nubian desert to Aswan, Egypt. "Probably the most famous European in the history of the Sudan, this Austrian survived as a captive of the Mahdi from 1883 until his escape to Egypt in 1895. His knowledge of the Sudan and its people was unrivalled and after the re-conquest he was appointed Inspector-General, second in authority only to the Governor-General, Reginald Wingate, of whom he was a great personal friend." The archive includes the following: - Arabic Manuscript presumed to be written by Slatin Pasha. 8vo. 1 page on thick handmade paper, 16cm x 25cm. Any writing by Slatin Pasha in Arabic is exceedingly scarce. - Slatin Pasha's first published account of his captivity and escape in Sudan, in three consecutive 'Special Edition' issues of London's Pall Mall Gazette newspapers, which precedes his book "Fire and Sword in the Soudan" by one year.. Manuscript.

Bancroft, Hubert Howe
San Francisco: A. L. Bancroft and Company and the History Company, 1883. A superb collection of this massive effort of the collection of Western history and anthropology of the United States and the western world. Bancroft lends his name to the distinguished Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, partly due to this herculean effort. Most books are like new, in black moroccan leather boards with vivid gilt lettering and tooling, with all edges bright gilt. With red marbled endpapers. Some spines have faded to the original brown leather, (See pic) but all gilt remains vivid. Besides the spine fade to some, most volumes are like new or in near fine condition, crisp, clean and tight and appear to never have been read; only about 6 or so have edgewear or flaking to the leather, else fine. 35 Volumes, missing 4. This set is missing Vol 2 of the History of Central America and missing Volume 1 of The History of California. I am not aware of the other two missing titles of this set. "Popular Tribunals" still has the fragile publisher's slip laid in, dated 1887. Please inquire for further information on condition if needed. Postage will be extra due to size and weight; no international or priority mail on this colossal set. A treasure, and a must for your California history library. [Click Below for Full Description]

Meissonier, Charles
Poissy: 24 January 1883. 3 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. To His American Dealer Knoedler, with a Sketch of Poissy. A fine letter to the New York dealer, [Roland?] Knoedler, with sketch in purple ink at the head of the page, of the village of Poissy (Meissonier's adopted home) and the Possy bridge. Meissonier writes: " ... You certainly won't have my painting "de la rose" this season. I'd like to show it at the Salon, and will do my best to finish it on time, but I'm afraid that I'll be too late ... I should love to be able to believe that this will be my most important painting, and I would be much saddened if it were to leave France without having been shown ... I shall not inform you of the unfortunate events of our poor country -- the death of Gambetta affected me deeply, and what's going on now saps my morale as a republican and a patriot -- but i don't want to bother you with my dark thoughts ... Our friend Knight is working also for the Salon and I like his painting very much ... So, my dear Monsieur Knoedler, the school of Poissy is still a famous school ... and now I bid you farewell for the moment, and send you my best wishes across the ocean ... " Fine. Provenance: Dr. Max Thorek, with his collector's stamp.

Darwin, Charles
John Murray, London, 1883. Early printing of Darwin's final work, published shortly before his death. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. In near fine condition. A sharp example of this work by the leading mind in evolutionary biology. One of the most important figures in human history, English naturalist, geologist and biologist Charles Darwin became internationally renowned for his contributions to the science of evolution. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors and, in a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace, introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Darwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of species. By the 1870s, the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted evolution as a fact. However, many favored competing explanations and it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution. Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, explaining the diversity of life. Published in 1883, The Formation Of Vegetable Mould, Through The Action of Worms covers, in depth, the important role of the earthw … [Click Below for Full Description]
