Engraved frontispiece portrait and one additional plate in Volume I. Jonathan Swift (30 November 1667 - 19 October 1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet and cleric who became Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. Swift is remembered for works such as A Tale of a Tub (1704), An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity (1712), Gulliver's Travels (1726), and A Modest Proposal (1729). He is regarded by the Encyclopædia Britannica as the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry. He originally published all of his works under pseudonyms - such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, M. B. Drapier - or anonymously. He was a master of two styles of satire, the Horatian and Juvenalian styles. His deadpan, ironic writing style, particularly in A Modest Proposal, has led to such satire being subsequently termed "Swiftian". See photos for condition details. Twain, Mark [Clemens, Samuel]
Boston: James R. Osgood, 1883. Harley, John; Garrett, Edmund Henry; Shute, A.B. Hard Cover. 1st Edition. Near Fine. Illustrated with 316 images by John Harley, Edmund Henry Garrett, and A. B. Shute. First edition, first state, with the illustration of the author and an urn bearing his initials in flames on page 441, and with the caption "The St. Louis Hotel" on the illustration on page 443. Publisher's decorative brown cloth, with pictorial panels depicting the Mississippi River stamped in gilt to the front board and spine, decorative ruling and ornamentations stamped in black to the front board. Near fine, with some light rubbing to the spine ends and corners, spine slightly starting inside the front cover, otherwise sturdy binding, clean pages. BAL 3411. Life on the Mississippi is a semi-autobiographical text about the history of the Mississippi River and the author's adventures riding on a steamboat from St. Louis to New Orleans. While much of the information in this text is factual, many of the individual episodes were fabricated to varying degrees and are better considered tall tales than accurate documentation. For example, Twain provides an account of the origin of his pseudonym, which he claims he took from Captain Isaiah Sellers. While the explanation of "mark twain" as a riverman's phrase for water found to be two fathoms deep (12 feet) is undoubtedly correct, it is likely that the stories regarding Sellers are at least partially embellished. In addition to offering insight into the author's earlier life, Life on the Mississippi provides historical context on the … [Click Below for Full Description]

It measures 11" wide by 32 1/2" tall. Grant, Ulysses S.
SIGNED AND DATED "U. S. Grant / Jany 25th 1883" on autograph book paper at 4.5" x 2.25" professionally mounted in an 8.5" x 11" presidential blue matte beneath a colorized photo of Grant. Ink seapage into paper leaving several light streaks. Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822 - July 23, 1885) was the 18th President of the United States (1869-77). As Commanding General of the United States Army (1864-69), Grant worked closely with President Abraham Lincoln to lead the Union Army to victory over the Confederacy in the American Civil War. After the War he implemented Congressional Reconstruction, often at odds with President Andrew Johnson. Twice elected president, Grant led the Republicans in their effort to remove the vestiges of Confederate nationalism and slavery, protect African American citizenship, and support economic prosperity. Paris: A. Capendu, (1883). Quarto. Leporello with four panels that open up to a three-dimensional proscenium for four popular stories: Robinson Crusoe, Puss in Boots, Red Riding Hood, and Sleeping Beauty. The opened scenes reveal the sweep of each narrative, and the text for each story, all of which are addressed to "Petite Mary", appears on a printed sheet laid down in front of the pop-up scene. Capendu was Lothar Meggendorfer's French publisher, and produced many imaginitive movable books for children in the latter part of the 19th century. Given the fragile nature of the present work, it is quite rare -- with only two copies located in institutional libraries. Pictorial title label pasted to front board; all board panels connected with red cloth hinges, which show some evidence of repair. Front board corners rounded. Light dampstain to verso of rear panel. Internally quite clean with all pop-up elements in perfect working condition. A very good example of a rare toy theater.

Galton, Francis.
Macmillan & Co, 1883. Polymath Francis Galton (1822-1911) was a Victorian-era statistician, progressive, polymath, sociologist, psychologist, anthropologist, eugenicist, tropical explorer, geographer, inventor, meteorologist, proto-geneticist, and psychometrician. He is perhaps best remembered today for the method he devised for classifying fingerprints that proved useful in forensic science. Inquiries contains => Galton's chief contributions to psychology. Strongly influenced by The Origin of Species (Darwin was a cousin), Galton began reflecting on the influence of heredity on the human race. Impressed by the fact that distinction of any kind is apt to run in families, he made a series of statistical investigations whereby he showed the heritability of genius of all kinds. Led to a conviction that the human race might gain an indefinite improvement by breeding the best and restricting the offspring of the worst, he set forth that conclusion in several books including this one. => To his study he gave the name "Eugenics," and it was in Inquiries that he coined that word along with the phrase "nature versus nurture." A photographic leaf offering "Specimens of composite portraiture personal and family" serves as frontispiece here, and the volume lists four plates, one => double-page and with multiple illustrations in color, at the end of the book. T.K. Penniman is quoted in Garrison and Morton as saying that in Inquiries Galton showed mathematically "the results of his experiments on the relations between the powers of visual imagery and of abstract thought, of the a … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first few signatures are loose, with some staining at the binding from the publisher's metal staples used with the stitched binding. The paste downs are beginning to tan. The text is clean. A Good copy. *** The likely author of this anonymous work is L. Edgar Welch, who also wrote under the pseudonym "Grip". A very early novel featuring Mars, appearing more than ten years before H.G. Well's WAR OF THE WORLDS. Welch's Martians are a branch of humanity, living in the water of Mars, rather than the land, and who have developed a very advanced Socialist system, far out-pacing their brethren of Earth.
