Artistic Houses (2 Parts of 4)

      D. Appleton and Comapny, New York 1883 - Subtitled "Being a Series of Interior Views of a number of the Most Beautiful and Celebrated Homes in the United States with A Description of the Art Treasures contained therein", this is the very uncommon 1883-84 1st edition. 101 of the 203 photographs of the interiors of the 19th century's most opulent homes are present. Each mounted photograph crisp and clean with printed tissue guards and handwritten captions (suggesting this may be a pre-publication copy). Sold by subscription only in a very small--but unknown--edition, this set was issued in 4 portfolio parts (or separate volumes) housed in custom-made cases. The 2 (of 4) parts offered here are Elephant folios, with unbound pages, as issued. Handsome maroon cloth cases, leather spine labels. The set has held up very nicely, in spite of its age and its brittle paper. Both volumes solidly VG and well-preserved. Light fraying along the cases' outer hinges and a bit of light soiling to the title pages. All plates though bright and clear and very lavish. Considered a true rarity in 19th century American architecture, the Sheldon set is viewed by many architectural historians as the great record of early 1880s interiors of the homes of the Eastern well-to-do. A well-researched and informed text complements each plate, paying its proper due to woodwork, color scheme, paintings and other key ingredients of interior decoration. A magnificent--and, at almost 2' tall, imposing--set, even if only half present. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Philadelphia Rees Welch & Co. 1882-1883. - First Edition, First Issue. BAL 21422. This copy is from the library of diarist Frederick Shelley Ryman with his signature and Boston, Ma. on the front end-paper, where he also has written, "Autograph Edition see p.122- Bought off Walt Whitman himself. Recd Jan. 6th, 1888". Forty four of Ryman's diaries dated 1880-1929 are in the permanent collection of the Mass Historical Society. "An atheist, he espoused free-love doctrines, passionately loved the poetry of Walt Whitman, and championed women's rights to equal education and employment. Nonetheless, the adventures he recorded at length in his diaries disclose a subculture that Ryman shared with other single men and women of the era. Ryman left a rich historical legacy in his extensive diaries which provide a rare personal account of male sexual experience during the 19th Century". This copy has Ryman's news clippings, cross outs, marginal lines and annotations sporadically throughout the book. This copy has a bold Whitman signature laid in at page 122 opposite the portrait (loose) of Whitman with butterfly. 8vo, bound in the publisher's original yellow cloth. An attractive copy well used by its illustrious former owner with his extensive and highly interesting notes throughout, along with the laid-in portrait and Whitman autograph slip Ryman has also preserved within the book several articles on Whitman, some are laid in while others are tipped to the endpapers and free-flies. A WONDERFUL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS GREAT CLASSIC PROSE WORK BY WALT WHITMAN, AMERICA'S GREAT POET, THIS FASCINATING COPY WITH LAID IN AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE OF WALT WHITMAN AND EXTENSIVE NOTATIONS ATTESTING TO ITS FINE PROVENANCE. THE BOOK IS REPLETE WITH MARGINALIA AND CONTEMPORARY WRITTEN MARKINGS AND CONNECTIONS TO THE POET. Among Whitman's personal writings included herein are his reminiscences upon his last visit with Emerson, his visit to Concord and vicinity to meet with the Alcotts the Emersons and other important personages and to spend time discussing, visiting the grave of and paying homage to Henry David Thoreau. Also included is a critique on the poetry of America, as well as an entire sub-section entitled "Notes Left Over." These writings are Whitman's most famous prose considerations.         History of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, California, with illustrations and biographical sketches of its prominent men and pioneers.

Oakland: Thompson & West 1883 - 4to., (11 ¾ x 9 ½ inches). Quarter leather with brown cloth boards. Title stamped elaborately in gold on front board with a gilt panel, in blind on rear. Flat spine with 7 compartments separated by gilt tooled Greek revival band. Lightly marbled end pages (some wear to gilt panel lettering on title and spine but presents very well, light shelf wear). Provenance: Small bookplate inscribed "Ex Libris Volkmann". Daniel G. Volkmann, born in California, was an avid book collector, award-winning architect, and patron of the arts. His collection took off when he inherited his mother's library of rare books relating to the history of California. His loyalty to this subject resulted in collecting a complete first edition set of the Zamorano 80 - a feat accomplished by only three others. First edition. A beautiful copy of a scarce first edition from 1883. Illustrated with engraved portraits and original lithographs showing Californian local residences and businesses. Includes 2 lithograph title pages, 88 lithograph plates with at times two or more views to a page, and 15 steel engraved portraits with original tissue guards. Lithographs include striking vistas of Victorian and modern homes, ranches; usually shown with a windmill, stores, hotels, banks, post offices, the Agency of Wells Fargo & Co. missions, mills, orchards, a vineyard, a dairy, a feed & livery stable, or a "fashion stable." One of the more outstanding views depicts The Wharf at Carpentaria with a paddled steamboat. The steel engraved portraits are of stunning quality; each accompanied with a printed signature underneath which could easily be mistaken for the individual's true handwriting. This edition also includes a Chronological and Patron's Directory. " for history prior to 1882, old reliable T&W remains the standard authority." (W. A. Tompkins) "Chapter IX, entitled 'Bad Men' deals with Jack Powers and Vasquez". (Adams) "As Ventura was a part of Santa Barbara until 1872, this history is of Ventura as well as Santa Barbara". The 21 devotions were first published in 1888 in Romanian (as "Cuvinte Sufletesti", "Words of the Soul"); a German edition appeared in Bonn in 1900 as "Seelengespräche". The Queen drew up this present fair copy specially for her mother and dedicated it to her, bound in a luxury binding, for her 59th birthday: "Meiner Mutter, meinem Religionslehrer und Vorbild auf dem Erdengange" ("To my mother, my religious instructor and role model throughout my life", f. 2). - Velvet binding shows signs of age in places, but is only very slightly rubbed. Silver edges are oxydized; wants a headband. The paper is unstained and immaculately white. Cf. Silvia I. Zimmermann: Die dichtende Königin. Selbstmythisierung und prodynastische

        ALS ("Ulrike"). Triblitz, 27. V. 1883.

1883. 8vo. 4 pp. on double leaf. In German, to a "dear Bertha" with family news: "My sister is doing fairly well, and B. has improved", though she fears that "the malady may return, as it cannot be completely cured, if the doctors are correct in what they say; but frequently they are wrong [...]". - In 1821, the 72-year-old Goethe had met the then 17-year-old Ulrike at Marienbad and was so carried away with her wit and beauty that he thought of marrying her, for which purpose he even enlisted the help of Grand Duke Charles August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Her hesitation to accept the offer made Goethe give up his plans; instead, he addressed to her the poems which he afterwards called "Trilogie der Leidenschaft" (Trilogy of Passion) and which include the famous Marienbad Elegy. - In perfect condition.

Boston James R. Osgood 1883 - First Edition, First State. Blanck's intermediate A, with the tailpiece of Twain in flames on p.441 still present, and with caption on p.443 corrected to read "The St. Charles Hotel". Profusely illustrated throughout. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original decorated cloth with black stamped decorations and gilt pictorial vignettes on the upper cover, the spine decorated in black and with a large gilt pictorial vignette, lettered in gilt, a.e.g. 624. An uncommonly fine and bright copy, and fine copies are becoming extinct. ONE OF TWAIN’S BEST BOOKS AND A RARE FINE COPY IN ORIGINAL CLOTH OF THIS IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. Twain writes about his home and his muse-the great Mississippi. "As a dwelling place for civilized man it is by far the first upon our globe." (preface) In this largely autobiographical narrative, Twain gives us a vivid account of his youth on the great river. A brilliant firsthand account of the steamboat age, the science of river piloting, and the life of the river itself from the point of view of those who made their living navigating it. A truly wonderful book and a valued piece of the American legacy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down.

Alden & Landis 699/146; Church 783; for the bindery: Du Bois, Historical essay on the art of bookbinding, 1883, p. 35. Third edition known to survive in the original Latin of a letter on the success of spreading the Gospel among the indigenous American Indians, written by Increase Mather, the second of three generations of famous Puritan ministers in Boston and rector of Harvard College, addressed to Johannes Leusden, Professor of Hebrew at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The letter is dated from Boston, 12 July 1687. The present Utrecht edition adds letters to Leusden on the progress of spreading the Gospel among the populations in Ceylon and the East Indies, written by Herman Specht (1684; 1688), Adrianus de Mey (1690; 1692) and Franciscus Valentijn (1686). These additional letters appear here in the first edition of the original Latin known to survive. The work is bound by the Bradstreet Bindery in New York. John M. Bradstreet (1815-1863) established one of the first credit rating companies and they apparently came into bookbinding through their publishing activities, but when Henry and his siblings took over the firm "fine binding" was largely a European phenomena, William Matthews in New York being the only major American exponent. They carried out work for J.P. Morgan, the Grolier Club and other bibliophiles. In 1883, Du Bois praised their bindings higher than any others in America, noting their "solidity, strength and squareness of workmanship ... Certainly none can put a varied coloured morocco coat on a book, and gild it with greater perfection in choice of ornament and splendor of gold, and with greater care, taste and success, ...". He even hints that they might excel the French and English, then regarded as the best binders. Church's copy of the present edition was also bound by Bradstreet, but in green morocco.Slightly browned, but still in very good condition. The binding has been expertly and unobtrusively rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down, and the corners are scuffed, but the binding is otherwise very good.
