        Familiar Wild Birds

London, Paris & New York: Cassell & Company, Limited,, 1883. London, Paris & New York: Cassell & Company, Limited,, 1883. 4 volumes, octavos. Handsomely bound in contemporary brown half calf, brown cloth sides, red morocco spine labels, raised bands, green endpapers, speckled edges. c. 160 chromolithographic plates with tissue guards throughout the set, and numerous vignette illustrations in the text by Thorburn and others. Occasional light spots to leaves, ownership signature to front free endpapers, but on the whole remarkably fresh, corners lightly bumped, light surface marks to cloth covers. An excellent set. A beautiful and complete first edition set of Swaysland's ornithological survey of British birds. Swaysland's preface to the first series posits the project in charming terms: "How much the charm of country life is due to the song of birds it is very difficult to realise. And still less generally known is the wonderful variety of bird life in even hyper-civilised England. By many a country lad every note is heard and every bird seen is alike known and recognised; but to many of those whose daily walks are limited to the stone pavements of our large cities, save that they probably know a robin and a sparrow when they see either, a bird is simply "a bird" and no more. To pourtray the many varieties of birds which yet visit, breed in, or live in England; to describe their haunts, habits, eggs, and appearance; is, therefore, a pleasant task, which may perchance add, for many, a fresh charm to their brief experiences of country life." This lovely production is hard to find in such nice condition.

Vocabulario Juridico: Com Appendices. I-Logar, E Tempo. II-Pessoas...

1883. Rare Nineteenth-Century Brazilian Law Dictionary Freitas, Augusto Teixeira de [1816-1883], Compiler. Vocabulario Juridico: Com Appendices. I-Logar, E Tempo. II-Pessoas. III-Cousas. IV-Factos. Rio de Janeiro: B.L. Garnier, 1883. viii, 771 pp. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary three-quarter morocco over marbled boards, rebacked retaining original spine with raised bands and gilt title, hinges mended. Some rubbing to extremities, corners bumped. Toning, faint dampstaining and some worming to first few and final signatures, several leaves repaired, legibility not affected, internally clean. A solid copy of a rare title. * Only edition. This dictionary appeared near the end of the Empire Era (1825-1889) and is thus a useful tool for the study of the legal system of that time. Freitas was a prominent Brazilian jurist and state official. An industrious scholar, he composed the first systematic compilation of Brazilian civil law and produced a draft Esboco de Codigo Civil (1860-64). He never finished it, but it was nonetheless a pioneering work that served as the basis for codifications in Brazil, Argentina and other South American nations. OCLC locates three copies of the Vocabulario in North American law libraries (Library of Congress, SMU and the University of Pennsylvania). We located another copy at UC-Berkeley Law School. Not in the British Museum Catalogue..

DENVER DOLL'S DECOY; or, Little Bill's Bonanza. Being No. 3 of the "Denver Doll" Series. Beadle's Half Dime Library. Vol. XI. No. 285

New York:: Beadle and Adams, No. 98 William Street.. 1883.. 4to. 11" x 8-1/8". 1st edition, later issue (Johannsen BEADLE 285-1/2DL). Ca 1890. Not in Hubin. 15, [1] pp. Text triple column. Last page an advert.. Printed self wrappers.. Spine indents, indicating the work was probably bound at one time. (and, no doubt accounting for its survival, as well as relatively. nice condition). Some edge chipping. Overall VG (paper beginning to. yellow, as usual).. The 'Denver Doll', our research indicates, has the distinction of being the one of the earliest female detective characters in US fiction. To quote Wheeler, " .. she was a splendid specimen of young womanhood.... It was no secret she was a detective; it was no secret she was a terror to. [sic]"& & The 'Denver Doll, The Detective Queen' was a creation of the prolific dime novelist Edward L. Wheeler, who initially appears in the 14 November 1882 issue of Beadle & Adam's HALF-DIME LIBRARY series, however, despite the charm & competence imbued by Wheeler, the 'Denver Doll' failed to rouse the enthusiasm of the early 1880's dime novel customers & she quickly faded from the scene a few months later with the publication of the 4th series title [March 1883]. This quick public expiration has, in turn, contributed to the present scarcity of the 'Denver Doll' series titles, as well as her lack of notoriety in today's mystery-collector circles... in fact, many believe that the first female detective in US literature was Amelia Butterworth, who appeared much later in Anna Katherine Green's 1897 work, THAT AFFAIR NEXT DOOR (cf. Blain. FEMINIST COMPANION, p. 456). & & This the third title in the Denver Doll series, with the action occuring in an Idaho mining camp, and is quite rare. . Large wood engraving to front wrapper.

Life On the Mississippi

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1883 Illustrated with 316 images by John Harley, Edmund Henry Garrett, and A. B. Shute. First edition, first state intermediate A, with the illustration of the author and an urn bearing his initials in flames on page 441, and with the caption "The St. Charles Hotel" on the illustration on page 443. Publisher's decorative brown cloth, with pictorial panels depicting the Mississippi River stamped in gilt to the front board and spine, decorative ruling and ornamentations stamped in black to the front board. About near fine, with some wear and light rubbing to the extremities, bright panels, former owner's inscription to the front pastedown, spine slightly starting at the tail of the rear hinge, otherwise sturdy spine, bright pages. Overall, a clean copy. BAL 3411. Life on the Mississippi is a semi-autobiographical text about the history of the Mississippi River and the author's adventures riding on a steamboat from St. Louis to New Orleans. While much of the information in this text is factual, many of the individual episodes were fabricated to varying degrees and are better considered tall tales than accurate documentation. For example, Twain provides an account of the origin of his pseudonym, which he claims he took from Captain Isaiah Sellers. While the explanation of "mark twain" as a riverman's phrase for water found to be two fathoms deep (12 feet) is undoubtedly correct, it is likely that the stories regarding Sellers are at least partially embellished. In addition to offering insight into the author's earlier life, Life on the Mississippi provides historical context on the industrialization of the United States in the second half of the 19th century; throughout the text, Twain discusses the competition of railroads along with the growing cities in the American Midwest and South.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. Illus. by Harley, John; Garrett, Edmund Henry; Shute, A.B..

DENVER DOLL'S DECOY; or, Little Bill's Bonanza. Being No. 3 of the "Denver Doll" Series. Beadle's Half Dime Library. Vol. XI. No. 285.

Beadle and Adams, No. 98 William Street., New York: 1883 - Large wood engraving to front wrapper. The 'Denver Doll', our research indicates, has the distinction of being the one of the earliest female detective characters in US fiction. To quote Wheeler, " . she was a splendid specimen of young womanhood. It was no secret she was a detective; it was no secret she was a terror to. [sic]"The 'Denver Doll, The Detective Queen' was a creation of the prolific dime novelist Edward L. This quick public expiration has, in turn, contributed to the present scarcity of the 'Denver Doll' series titles, as well as her lack of notoriety in today's mystery-collector circles. in fact, many believe that the first female detective in US literature was Amelia Butterworth, who appeared much later in Anna Katherine Green's 1897 work, THAT AFFAIR NEXT DOOR (cf. Blain. FEMINIST COMPANION, p. 456). This the third title in the Denver Doll series, with the action occuring in an Idaho mining camp, and is quite rare. Spine indents, indicating the work was probably bound at one time (and, no doubt accounting for its survival, as well as relatively nice condition). Some edge chipping. Overall VG (paper beginning to yellow, as usual). 4to. 11" x 8-1/8". 1st edition, later issue (Johannsen BEADLE 285-1/2DL). Ca 1890. Not in Hubin. 15, [1] pp. Text triple column. Last page an advert.         Foot Ball Records of American Teams Compiled by -

Boston: Published by Wright & Ditson, Fine Athletic Goods, 580 Washington Street, [1883]. First edition. 12mo (6-1/8 x 4-1/4 in.). 42, [2] pp. Printed by Cashman, Keating & Co., Boston. Publisher's salmon stapled wrappers. Light wear and spotting to covers, small piece from spine head, offsetting to pp. 16-7 from laid-in c. 1880s newspaper clipping reporting Stevens Institute vs. University of Michigan game. In a custom black half morocco slipcase and chemise. Provenance: Edwin Burhorn (inscription to front wrapper, "Edwin Burhorn/ Stevens Institute/ Hoboken, N.J." and his misspelled name corrected on p. 16) . Extremely scarce football record book recording the first season of play under the modern rules proposed by Walter Camp and adopted by the Intercollegiate Football Association in 1882. Camp (1859-1925), dubbed the "Father of American Football," played on the Yale team from 1875 to 1882 and later coached the team from 1888 to 1892. He was present at the Massasoit House conventions that established the early rules of the game. His innovations, which helped define the modern game of American football as a distinct sport from English rugby, include the line of scrimmage (versus the rugby maul), the snap from center to quarterback, reduction of the number of onfield players per team from 15 to 11, a system of downs and scoring, and the size of the field of play. In his preface, Camp notes of the present work, "being the initial movement of its kind has proven difficult" and that "next year's managers will be spared the necessity of reviewing the hieroglyphs of last year's correspondence." He records 23 college and high school football teams -including Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, Dartmouth, Amherst, University of Michigan and Rutgers - lists all Harvard, Princeton and Yale players and scores since 1876, records American Intercollegiate Association games in 1883 (the championship going to Yale), and lists all non-Association team rosters and scores. An extremely scarce record of the early days of modern football - we can locate only the Library of Congress copy. This copy inscribed by Stevens Institute player Edwin Burhorn on the front wrapper ("Edwin Burhorn/ Stevens Institute/ Hoboken, N.J.")

The classic description of infantile scurvy ("Barlow's disease"), including the pathology of the disease and a detailed list of cases. Up until the latter half of the 19th century, infantile scurvy had been confused with rickets: "the isolation of scurvy from rickets as a definite and separate disease-although often concomitant in the same child-was a triumph of deductive reasoning" (DNB) Barlow recommended fresh foods as a cure for the disease.         The Complete Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne

Cambridge: The Riverside Press, 1883. The Riverside Edition. Limited to 250 sets. Octavo, 12 volumes. Three-quarters blue morocco, gilt titles to the spine, top edges gilt. Illustrated with etchings by Blum, Church, Dielman, Gifford, Shirlaw, and Turner. In near fine condition. A very attractive, early Hawthorne set. The widely celebrated author has been revered not only by the public but by his literary contemporaries as well. Edgar Allen Poe said, "[t]he style of Hawthorne is purity itself. His tone is singularly effective-wild, plaintive, thoughtful, and in full accordance with his themes... We look upon him as one of the few men of indisputable genius to whom our country has as yet given birth" (McFarland, 1988). Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote later that "Nathaniel Hawthorne's reputation as a writer is a very pleasing fact, because his writing is not good for anything, and this is a tribute to the man" (Nelson, 1981). Henry James praised Hawthorne, saying, "The fine thing in Hawthorne is that he cared for the deeper psychology, and that, in his way, he tried to become familiar with it" (Porte, 1969). Lastly, the poet John Greenleaf Whittier wrote that he enjoyed the "weird and subtle beauty" in Hawthorne's tales (Woodland, 1985).

The Story of an African Farm

London: Chapman and Hall, Limited, 1883. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Olive Schreiner (1855-1920) was a South African author, the ninth of twelve children born to a missionary couple. The Story of an African Farm is regarded as an important feminist novel, published by the author under a male pseudonym. "The tale centres round an ordinary Boer farm and depicts the hard, coarse, unlovely life of some of the Afrikander peasant farmers…the work is certainly the most notable volume of fiction relating to South Africa undertaken up to this period by any writer of South African birth and education." (Mendelssohn, p.281). This first edition was published in an edition of 300 copies. Since it caused a sensation, first edition copies were often widely read and circulated, with expected wear and loss to the books. Here is the 2-volume first edition uniquely and fabulously rebound by renowned Sangorski & Sutcliff. The publisher's original cloth binding prominently featured ostriches on the spines of both volumes. In a nod to the original binding and a truly striking piece of craftsmanship, this set is rebound in full black ostrich skin with gilt top edge and hand-marbled endpapers. The condition of the binding is virtually as new. The contents are remarkably crisp, clean, and bright with no spotting or previous ownership marks. Even the untrimmed fore and bottom edges are clean and bright.
