Der Erste und Zweite Kongress des Deutschen Schachbundes

Leipzig: Verlag von Veit & Co, 1883 viii+228 pages with diagrams and tables lacks frontispiece. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") bound in 3/4 leather with black boards and gilt lettering to spine. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5210) First edition. The city of Leipzig was the birthplace of the Deutschen Schachbund on July 18th, 1877. Over the next two years sixty-two chess clubs would become members of the foundling chess federation. Hofrat von Gottschall became the chairman of the federation and Hermann Zwanzig was made the general secretary. The Deutschen Schachbund reconvened at the Schützenhaus on July 15th, 1879. To commemorate the meeting, a Schachkongresse master's tournament was organized. This inaugural event was largely an internal affair. Three invitations went out to Austrian chess masters: Berthold Englisch, Karl Pitschel, and Adolf Schwarz. The remaining nine seats went to German chess masters: Louis and Wilfried Paulsen, Max Bier, Ernst Flechsig, Fritz Riemann, Emil Schallopp, Arnold Schottlaender, Johannes Von Minckwitz, and Carl Wemmers. The field and format were extremely limited, with two rounds being played on most days of the tournament. Records have been such that ten of the sixty-six games have not survived to the present day, and therefore they have been omitted from this collection. However, what began with the Deutschen Schachbund in Leipzig in 1879 would in the next two years evolve into one of the stronger and more widely recognized of international chess competitions the world would see over the course of the latter 19th century. Berthold Englisch won this event with 9 wins out of his eleven games.Condition:Rebound in three quarter leather, lacks frontispiece portrait else a very good copy of a scarce tournament.

Five Reports on Western China by Consul-General (later Sir) Alexander Hosie

London.: HMSO.. 1883- 1905.. Reports included in this collection are: China No.1 (1883). Despatch from Her Majesty's Chargé D'Affaires at Peking, Forwarding a Report by Mr. A. Hosie, Student Interpreter in the China Consular Service of a Journey through the Provinces of Kueichow and Yünnan. 37pp. China No.2 (1884). Report by Mr. Hosie of a Journey through the Provinces of Ssu-Ch'uan, Yünnan, and Kuei Chou: February 11 to June 14, 1883. 95pp. China No.2 (1885). Report by Mr. Hosie of a Journey through Central Ssu-Ch'uan in June and July, 1884. 37pp. First 6 pages evenly browned. China No.5 (1904). Report by Consul-General Hosie on the Province of Ssuch'uan. 2 folding black and white maps. 100pp. Last leaf of text and the two maps detached but present. 1904. China No.1 (1905). Report by Mr. A. Hosie, His Majesty's Consul-General at Chengtu, on a Journey to the Eastern Frontier of Thibet. Folding colour map. 87pp. Disbound, each report separate. Quarto. Very good copies. These five reports by (Sir) Alexander Hosie (1853-1925) of the British Consular Service in China record journeys he made in Western China in the early 1880s and again in the early 1900s. They were all considered valuable by the British Ministers to China of the day, and were printed for the information of both Houses of the British Parliament. The earlier reports are mainly on travel in the western provinces, then not as well-explored or well-known as they had become by the time of his later journeys, and one was specifically concerned with investigating insect white wax, a valuable local export commodity and securing specimens of the trees from which it was taken, as requested by the Director of Kew Gardens. Hosie’s accounts create a vivid picture of people and places, officials and soldiers, trade routes and burden bearers, products and scenery, mountains and rivers, and we can form a view of the man himself, and of his humanity. They were all made at first hand, for in his three years in West China, Hosie is credited with having travelled 5,000 miles, mainly on foot and horseback. (P.D. Coates - The China Consuls (Hong Kong, OUP, 1988), p. 313.) The record of the journey to the Tibetan frontier in mid 1904 took place when a British force crossed into Southern Tibet, overcame opposition, and occupied the capital Lhasa. In fact, Hosie was on the Chinese frontier at that very time, and was not permitted to cross into Tibetan territory. Always a shrewd observer, Hosie was also an accomplished writer who could entertain as well as inform. His account of this journey is one of his best. The other 1904 publication is devoted to a detailed description of the products of Western China, listed under vegetable, animal and mineral heads, and ends with his opinion that, however desirable, promotion of the export trade by any seem-ingly possible river route was in fact impractical. Along with Hosie’s reports on other travels conducted in the 1890s when he had twice been British Consul at Newchang in Manchuria, and the account of his later travels to check the location and extent of cultivation of the opium poppy in the early 1910s, the reports on China’s western provinces were also used in the four books which he published on these subjects between 1890 and 1922: namely, Three Years in Western China ….. (editions in 1890 and 1897); Manchuria: Its People, Resources and History (1904); On the Trail of the Opium Poppy …. , two vols, 1914); and Szechuan: Its Products, Industries and Resources, 1922). These books notwithstanding, the official publications, which contain the original accounts and are well produced (the last two with large folding maps) have an abiding charm and long-term value of their own. .

Autograph letter - William T. Sherman

      - Autograph letter, signed "W. T. Sherman," to Mary Audenreid (St. Louis 1883); single leaf , 8vo., folded to form four pages; on personal letterhead; unpublished. "I was specially pleased to learn from your good letter of the 19th just received that you were first recovering from the dreadful shock of my official service and beginning to mingle with this gay world I somehow I don't estimate your friend Robertson as high as some do. His vanity seems excessive and he is somewhat indiscriminate in his attentions. A lady may receive the adulations of any gentleman and claim the rightful privileges of her sex the moment his attentions pass the limit of what she construes propriety. So every man loves the endearments of a woman, especially a pretty one, only he too is limited by the dread Rules 'Propriety.' As each sex construes this Rule for itself there is plenty of room for scandal. I think [Preston] Plumb [Kansas Republican senator] is an honorable man, but somehow I don't like to associate his name with yours that he admires you as much as you will let him is natural and proper but for life think a good many times. You are in no hurry, for unless some transcendent man and genius comes to you first, I somehow want you to wait now till Florence [Audenreid's daughter] is well married. That cannot be long, for this girl will be most attraction and fascinating to men - her willfulness and waywardness will be construed as smartness and vitality and as soon as she is out she will be the center of attraction. I have not heard from her, or of her except what you have written since I left New York, but yesterday I did write to her at Mrs. Reed, asking her to continue to write me, as I think it will do her good to empty her mind to some old fellow like me who can have but one motive, and that her ultimate good. Lizzie [Sherman's daughter] and I intended to drive out to Mrs. [?] in the country - today, but it proves to be one of those rainy, murky days when indoors is a necessity. I have a series of dinners and parties on hand to the end of November. So as yet I have no occasion to feel the ennui of this idle life. [John E.] Tourtelotte [Sherman's former aide] is now at work on my scrap book in my back office [in] the Old Dining Room. Rachael [Sherman's daughter] was at home last night and our parlors were well filled & c. Affectionately, your guardian." ----- According to biographer John Marszalek, Sherman became involved with Mary Audenreid, the wife of his aide, Joseph Audenreid, in the early 1880s. The two men had known each other for a long time, Audenreid first beginning service with Sherman in 1863. Mary had no special relationship with her husband's boss, but this changed in mid-June 1880 when Audenreid died after an extended illness. Soon Sherman was filling his letters to her with advice about how to get over her depression so she could continue raising Florence, her daughter. Eventually, she began to view the general romantically and reacted with mixed feelings. Mary was not discouraged; she continued her suit. In the end, Sherman settled for flirtations, public kisses, and, perhaps, brief liaisons. The relationship lasted until his death in 1891. A wonderful association [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Oakland, 1883 This dual picture hand-colored lithograph "Store and Post Office at Los Alamos Santa Barbara Co. Cal. A Leslie Prop./Residence of A. Leslie, Los Alamos, Santa Barbara, Co. Cal." measures 11.75" x 8.75" and is in very good condition with light foxing and evidence of previous binding to the left edge. This finely colored and expertly detailed lithograph shows the downtown of Los Alamos, a town in Santa Barbara County. A wine and liquor store, general store and wagon and machinery store are all detailed and vibrantly colored. Fine details include horse drawn carriages, and towns people walking around the stores. The lower image of the Leslie residence (proprietor of the Los Alamos stores shown above) and his ranch in Los Alamos. A couple on horseback and horse drawn wagon are shown with a train speeding by in the distance.Thomas H. Thompson, formerly Captain Thomas, began his career preparing maps and atlases of Illinois and Iowa counties. At various times of his life he was in partnership with several different men, two of them, Louis Everts and Alfred Andreas, were old acquaintances from his army days. In 1870 Thompson and Everts began publishing atlases, releasing in that year what they called ?combination atlas maps.? In the 1870 atlases, lithographic illustrations were placed at the rear of the volumes. After 1870 the illustrations were interleaved with township maps throughout the atlases. The atlases were sold by subscription by traveling salesmen. Thompson and Everts dissolved their partnership in the early 1870s and in 1875 Thompson migrated to California. There he published atlases of Northern California. In partnership with Albert West, he issued atlases of Santa Clara County (1875), Alameda County (1878) and Solano County (1878). All are illustrated with lithographic views and sketches similar to those in the atlases of mid-western counties with a splendid array of lithographed plates showing the farms, houses, and other features of the settlements of Alameda County.

Neurohypnologie.

Cf. Garrison & Morton, 4993 pour la 1ère edition anglaise : ¿Braid inaugurated modern hypnotism, the word itself being introduced by him. His theories were adopted by Broca, Charcot, Liébeault and Bernheim; thus he founded the French school.¿ ; Crabtree 465, Zilboorg, pp. 356-357, 359 et 433 ; Hunter & Macalpine, pp. 906-910 ; Postel & Quetel, p. 59. Collection of albumen photographs of Philippines, including portraits of young women with fans

Manila:. Ca. 1883.. Very good condition. A collection of 12 early 1880s photographs of the Philippines from an album, including landscape views of the Sooloo Islands ("The Town of Jolo"); Waterfall Majayjay; "Maudaloyau (sic) (Mandaluyong?) after Typhoon 20 Oct. 1883", River Pasig; a view of village houses and Mayon Volcano emitting smoke in the distance (titled "Albay Volcano"); "the Moat Manila"; "Volcano of Camiguin"; and "Majajay". & & The images of women include a lovely portrait of a young woman in elaborately embroidered blouse, her hair swept back, on the same album page as two young women in dark plaid dresses, wearing shawls, one with a half opened fan held in her right hand. In nineteenth century Philippines, under Spanish influence, there was a courtship tradition in which women conveyed their marital status by means of hand held fans; a half opened fan held in the right hand signified that a young lady was seeking a suitor. These portraits are highly similar in style and subject to a Francisco van Kamp portrait of a woman with swept back hair, (Francisco Van Camp Fotografía / Copia de exposicion. Museo Oriental. Real Colegio P.P Agustinos, Valladolid). Van Kamp was a Dutch photographer who took over the Manila studio of British photographer Albert Honiss when he died in 1874. In addition to his portraits, van Kamp is known to have produced a series of photographs following the 1880 earthquake; there is an image here following the typhoon of October 1883 showing the heavily damaged wooden frame of a large building. Another image with Western jockey seated on a water buffalo held by a Filipino in bowler and white shirt. Mounted on the same album page is a portrait of a young woman in white shawl, striped skirt and holding half opened fan in her right hand. Only two of the album pages have two photographs mounted on them; the remaining eight pages have one image only. Quite a few of the photographs have titles written in pencil and then overwritten in pen above and below the images. The 8 landscape photographs image size 10 3/4 x 8 1/2"; the three portraits of women 4 x 5 1/2"; the water buffalo rider 7 x 6". All of the photographs in remarkably good condition.

        Felis Jaguarondi [Yaguaroundi ]

[London: Daniel Giraud Elliot for the subscribers, 1883. A very fine image from 'the best animal painter who ever lived' (Sir Edwin Landseer). The Jaguarundi [puma yaguarondi] lives mainly in Mexico, Central America and South America. They are seen very infrequently in southern Texas, New Mexico and the Sonora Desert in Arizona. One of the most striking images from Elliot's magnificent work A Monograph of the Felidae or Family of Cats (London: 1878-1883) which described and pictured all the species of cats then known, and is still the most beautiful work on the subject. The work was prompted by a perceived need to resolve the confusion that had built up around the naming of the various species of Felidae , particularly amongst the smaller cats. Wolf worked from specimens provided by Elliot, who visited all the great museums and zoological societies on both sides of the Atlantic. This allowed Elliot to make a comparative study of skeletons and skins and reduce the number of apparently separate species by nearly a third. Joseph Wolf served an apprenticeship with a Koblentz firm of lithographers, and spent some time working in Leiden and Darmstadt, before moving to London in 1848. The quality of his images was recognized immediately and he was rarely without work, producing natural history pictures of the highest quality for the Zoological Society of London, Henry Dresser, George Gray and John Gould, amongst many others. Wolf's work for Elliot marks the high-point of his illustrative work and his images of the cats are considered by many to be his masterpieces. Cf. Nissen ZBI 1279; cf. Wood p.332. Hand-coloured lithograph by J.Smit after Joseph Wolf, printed by M. & N.Hanhart.

        Der Weltteil Australien?

      G. Freytag [and] Tempsky, 1882-, Leipzig and Prague 1883 - Four volumes, octavo, frontispieces in each volume, maps and other illustrations; original blindstamped green cloth. Influential German study of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. Karl Emil Jung, who had taught classics at Eton, emigrated to Australia in the 1850s, took part in several journeys into the interior, spent some years as a squatter, and worked as an educationalist including serving as Inspector of Schools for South Australia. He spent altogether more than twenty years in Australia, returning to Germany in the late-1870s where he wrote this extensive description of Australia and the Pacific with an audience of would-be German emigrants in mind. The book is divided into sections on: Australia and its native inhabitants; the Australian colonies including Tasmania; Melanesia, Polynesia; New Zealand; Micronesia. Jung became the German authority on Oceanic matters, and supplied information and articles on Australia and the Pacific to numerous periodicals, encyclopedias and text-books. His long stay in Australia had made him uniquely placed to give a comprehensive description of life downunder, and his book is very well illustrated with woodcuts, many of them full-page, of cities, landscapes, native peoples and natural features. Coturnix Coromandelica (Coromandel Quail)

London 1883 - This splendid hand-colored, folio-size lithograph, Coturnix Coromandelica, from John Gould’s (1804-1881) monumental book "Birds of Asia" (1850-1883) is in excellent condition with a few light staining marks. Measuring 15" x 21.75", this lithograph displays the author’s scientific skill and attention to detail. Commonly called Coromandel Quails, or Rain Quails, these birds are expertly hand-colored in different shades of brown, with intricate feather patterns throughout their bodies. Two male quails are illustrated in a frontal position, one with his wing up, allowing for their patterned faces and plumage can be appreciated. John Gould was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became an expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. His wife Elizabeth and other artists were able to transfer his sketches to stone; hand print and hand-color them. One of Gould's greatest achievements, the “Birds of Asia” was in production longer than any of his other work, taking thirty-four years for the appearance of its thirty-five parts. The ornithologist was fascinated by the diversity of the exotic, colorful species of Asia, and he conveyed his enchantment to viewers, creating one of his most monumental and magnificent sets. For the preparation of “Birds of Asia”, Gould’s team of artists was joined by the German-born Josef Wolf, who, like Richter and Hart, would also become a long-term collaborator. The subjects of the plates are among the most varied of Gould's folios: trogons, kingfishers, sunbirds, woodpeckers, partridges, parrots, parakeets, pheasants, and many other genera are beautifully drawn, printed and colored. Gould placed many of the overwhelmingly vibrant, showy and elegant birds in settings appropriately lush and detailed. Perhaps more than in any of his other productions, he was careful to create an environment that was extensively delineated and highly accurate. In many of Gould's other books, the background was subtle or nonexistent, but he was clearly fascinated by the foliage and wildlife of Asia. The intended geographical range of the work was enormous and very much in keeping with the seemingly limitless ambition of the 19th century's most enterprising and prolific ornithologist. “Birds of Asia” was an overwhelming success, despite the great length of time over which it was produced. It was also a stunning feat in that, throughout the four decades of its production, the quality remained outstandingly high. The many noted subscribers included Queen Victoria, the Emperor of Austria, the kings of Hanover, Belgium, and Portugal, museums, universities, and institutions in cities worldwide.
