1883. Very good. "Edward Bosqui was born in 1833 in Montreal, of French descent. When he was about seventeen years old he decided to go to California. He went by way of Panama, where like a good many others who headed for the Gold Rush in those days, he became stranded. He worked his way up through Mexico, a hazardous trip, but young Bosqui survived the many hardships....He arrived in San Francisco in the latter part of 1850, and his first job was as cashier of the first bank to be established there. Afterwards he served as General Fremont's secretary. He first went into the printing business in 1859 at Clay and Leidesdorff Streets and stayed at that location for thirty-nine years. Bosqui did bookbinding as well as printing and lithography....He printed the EVENING BULLETIN in the early days of its existence, and did a great deal of commercial label work" - Peters. The Arctic Oil Works was established on a Bay side pier between 17th and 16th streets in 1883 to produce refined oils from seals, whales, and elephant seals. Soon after opening, it became the largest oil refinery on the West coast. In 1902 the oil works became incorporated as part of Standard Oil. The painting is quite similar to the lithographed view, though more Impressionistic in style and without quite as much detail. The spelling mistakes in the address of the works ("Potrcro" instead of Potrero) and in the address of the offices ("ZB" instead of 28) further suggest this painting to be after the scarce lithographed view produced by Bosqui. The painting, however, shows considerable age and is on the original stretcher, and dates from the late 19th century.

The most important visiting musicians were Sergei Rachmaninoff, who entered a musical fragment from the Second Piano Concerto, that he had performed in Arnhem that same evening (December 7, 1908) and Willem Mengelberg, who directed that concert; cellist Pablo Casals and pianist Harold Bauer, who performed together on November 26, 1907; opera singers Jeanne Raunay, Hermine Bosetti and Georgette Leblanc - with her husband, the author Maurice Maeterlinck - violinists Jacques Thibaud and Kathleen Parlow; and composer Richard Strauss. The actors' comprise famous actress Sarah Bernhardt, Édouard de Max with his young assistant Marie Ventura, and Coquelin Cadet. The actors' signatures are accompanied by friendly and humorous quotations. The drawings and prints are generally from a slightly later date, 1909-1921. The artists are Jozef Israëls (pen drawing of a girl on a dune, not dated), Charles Dankmeijer (old farm, ink drawing), Toon Dupuis (photo of an equestrian statue), Hendrik van Bloem (landscape, etching), H.J. Haverman (rabbits, ink drawing), Kees van Waning (landscape, charcoal drawing), Herman Moerkerk (old man, mottoed 'Sic transit...', elaborate drawing in aquarel and crayon), Willem E. Roelofs jr.         CHARLES II Francis of Habsburg (1540-1590): "Der Maurer und Steinmetz. in Graz und im ganzen Landt Steyr Zunfft Ordnung Confirmation." (Confirmation of the Guild Orders for the Builders and Stone Carvers in Graz and the Rest of Styria.

      - Manuscript on parchment, 4ff, in original velum wraps. Signed by Archduke Charles II Francis (contemporary horizontal fold across the middle, velum with some minor old stitches, overall in very good, clean condition. Ex-libris of J. B. Holzinger, 1883 and a 19th Century note on the inner side of the wraps), 30.5 x 38 cm. This finely preserved 16th Century official Habsburg document is a decree of Archduke Charles II Francis, the ruler of Inner Austria, which announces a new set of regulations for builders and architects working in Styria. While at first this seems to relate to a dry administrative matter, in its context the decree was actually an explosive salvo in one of Central Europe’s most contentious and consequential socio-political contests. During the last quarter of the 16th Century, much of the construction activity in Styria was done at the behest of Protestant grandees, employing manpower from Northern Italy. This resulted in the proliferation of distinctly Protestant edifices, especially churches, that were seen as a threat to the established Roman Catholic order, as upheld by the Habsburgs. The Archduke who, for political reasons, could not directly confront the Protestants, decided to mount an indirect strike against the evangelical community by going after their builders. In essence, the decree seeks to ban the importation of architects and builders, relegating the Protestants to relying on the largely Catholic builders who were members of the local guilds. It was hoped that these reforms would greatly hinder the construction of evangelical architecture. When Charles II Francis became the Archduke of Austria and ruler of Inner Austria (which included Styria, Carinthia and Carniola) in 1564, he inherited a series of intractable and inter-linked problems. As a devout Roman Catholic, he was affronted by the fact that the vast majority of his realm’s nobility and bourgeois classes had converted to Protestantism. This meant that adherents of the evangelical faith controlled the vast majority of the wealth in the region. While Charles II Francis invited the Jesuits to Inner Austria in an effort to boost the Counterreformation, for many years this seemed to have had little effect. Making matters worse, Inner Austria lay near the frontier with the Habsburg’s arch nemesis, the Ottoman Empire. The possibility of a massive Turkish invasion was an omnipresent threat. In fact, Charles II Francis desperately needed to solicit funding from the Protestants to pay for Inner Austria’s defenses. In 1578, at the council held at Brück an der Mur, the Archduke agreed to grant the Protestants wide-ranging privileges, including the right to build their churches as they saw fit, in return for grants and loans to fight the Turks. The great citadel of Karlovac, Croatia was built in 1579 with the resulting funds. The Protestants proceeded to enjoy their privileges with gusto. Numerous highly skilled Italian Protestant architects and builders, many from the Lake Como area, were summoned to Styria. It must be conceded that Italian Protestant architects were not new to Styria, although before this time their presence was episodic. For instance, the city hall of Graz was built in 1557 by Domenico dell’Aglio. That being said, by 1580, the Italian craftsmen were recorded as being in every corner of Styria and other parts of Inner Austria. They built numerous churches to evangelical specifications. The Italians also possessed skills in military architecture that was far advanced of that practiced in Austria. Thus, many of the most important fortifications defending the realm from the Ottomans were designed by Italian Protestant architects. They also built palaces and private chapels for many of the region’s Protestant noblemen. Surviving contemporary records on baptisms and deaths show that many native Austrian builders converted to Protestantism and joined the foreign-led crews. The local guilds were relegated to small, low quality projects, ca

Autograph letter signed in full to Monsieur Miral.

4 pp. of a bifolium. Small octavo. Dated Monday evening, December 5 [between 1883 and 1891]. In black ink on cream paper with black borders. In French (with translation). Having returned to Paris, Delibes is anxious for news of the second run of his opera, Lakmé. Because his correspondent's letter was delivered to the wrong address, he has had to seek information elsewhere. Unfortunately another audience member has told him that the tenor and "basse chantante" have weak voices. Delibes suggests they replace the latter with a certain "Monsieur Schmidt" in order to increase ticket sales. In January, he and his correspondent will discuss his opera, Le Roi l'a dit, which premiered at the Opéra-Comique on May 24, 1873. "Unfortunately a more recent letter...tells me that our tenor is always weak, as well as the 'basse chantante' [i.e. high lyric bass], and that the whole weight of the performance rests on Madame [Alice?] Verheyden, who alone has some success in the work. (I add that these reports do not come from her husband!)" Slightly soiled and foxed; creased at folds. . Lakmé is considered to be Delibes's masterpiece. It offers more than just a fine vehicle for a star soprano; the two principal male characters, Nilakantha and Gérald, are firmly drawn, and the music is melodic, picturesque and theatrically strong. The opera was first performed at the Opéra-Comique (Salle Favart) in Paris on April 14, 1883. Delibes's correspondent, Miral, was perhaps the director of the Théâtre Municipal de Nancy. If this is the case, it is quite likely that the production mentioned in this letter took place there.

LIFE AMONG THE PIUTES: Their Wrongs and Claims

Boston: Cupples, Upham & Co, 1883. First edition. Spine slightly darkened, moderate fraying to spine ends, splash stains to front cover, inner hinges mended, still a presentable copy . Original blue cloth with gilt spine title on spine and black ornaments to spine and front cover, small octavo (5 x 7.5 inches), 268pp. THIS COPY SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on front free endpaper: "With Love and Truth. Princess Sarah Winnemucca, Feb. 4th, 1884". An important work, described in the Oxford Companion to Women's Writing in the United States as "The first known work published in English by a Native American woman." In the late 1840s Sarah Winnemucca (1844-1891) witnessed her tribe's (Northern Paiutes near Humboldt Lake Nevada) first encounter with white European settlers. She was the first of her tribe to be educated in Western fashion - at a convent school in San Jose, California. She later worked as an interpreter for the US military and Bureau of Indian Affairs. Most of her adult life was devoted to futile attempts to gain civil rights and official recognition for her people. This, her only book, is a poignant memoir, history, and plea for justice.

        Autograph letter signed ("Heinrich").

New York, 5. XII. 1883. - 8vo. 3 pp. on double leaf. - However, the gratification of Villard, who had emigrated to the USA three decades earlier to escape his debts, his father, and the military and who had risen from casual laborer to newspaper editor and finally to president of two railroad companies, was not to last long: while his ambitious project, the Northern Pacific Railroad, had been completed, the costs had exceeded his plans by 14 million dollars. After having been forced to return to Germany shortly thereafter, he was soon sent back to America by Georg von Siemens, his friend and the chief executive at the Deutsche Bank, for which Villard was to function as a representative. In 1887, Villard was once more president of Northern Pacific; a year later, he bought the Edison Lamp Co. and Edison Machine Works from his friend Thomas Alva Edison, who had lost interest in entrepreneurship, and fused them into Edison General Electric, which in 1892 he joined with the Thomson-Houston Co. to form General Electric. In 1893, Henry Villard was displaced from his Northern Pacific and General Electric presidencies by John Pierpont Morgan; he died of a heart-attack in 1900. - Occasional insignificant staining, with a few minute ink smudges. Very rare.

Boomanoomana Station from across the Murray River [with] American Merino Rams pedigree of sheep by W. G. Markham, purchased by Alfred Hay of Boomanoomana in 1883

Ca. 1860s; 1883.. Albumen cabinet card with original photograph of the Australian station, now located in the township called Barooga. Photograph on card with printed border, the title written in pencil on verso. A small station house is visible at the right side of the image, with a long wooden fence bordering the river. The area which later became Boomanoomana Station was first settled in the early 1800?'s by Colonel Henry Gwynne, who arrived there in the footsteps of Charles Sturt. By 1863 the station got its name when William Hay acquired 80,000 acres. The property extended from Corowa in the east to Tuppal Station in the west, and was quite wooded, therefore suitable for cattle. But Hay wanted to establish a sheep station, so he sold off his cattle, cleared the trees at great effort and fenced the land, purchasing merino sheep from established stations. Hay built a homestead which still stands; it was owned by Sir David Hay (1916 - 2009), head of Aboriginal Affairs, Administrator of Papua New Guinea and Ambassador to the UN, who restored the grounds and buildings to original condition. 3 1/2 x 6 1/2" image on card 4 1/2 x 6 1/2". Cabinet card not recorded in Trove. [with] American Merino Rams, recorded in the American Merino Register, selected by W. G.. Markham, Avon, NY USA from the best American Flocks. Shipped from San Francisco, California, June, 1883. Consignee: Alfred Hay, Esq., Boomanoomana, Mulwala, New South Wales, Australia. W. G. Markham was heavily involved in the exportation of merinos to Australia. He convinced Australian wool growers that introducing American merinos into the Australia flock would increase their weight, and this was very successful. The purchaser here is Alfred Hay (1846 - 1918), the son of William Hay, who established Boomanoomana Station. Alfred Hay became sole owner of Boomanoomana Station in 1886, after the dissolution of the partnership between his father, himself, and brother. Boomanoomana Station at the time consisted of 33,000 acres of freehold, and about 5,000 acres of Crown lands. Markham was mentioned in many articles about Australian wool growing. In the "Pacific Rural Press", Volume 36, Number 24, 15 December 1888, it reads: "We imagine it was this large purchase (of sheep) by Mr. (Samuel) McCaughey which started that genial globetrotter in the sheep interest, Mr. W. G. Markham of Western New York, on a pleasure trip to Australia last summer. Mr. Markham made us a call (in California) on his way out but did not disclose his business. We imagine that he went to see if there were any more sheep buyers like Mr. McCaughey in Australia, and turn their attention to the flock of Western New York as well as to those of the Green Mountain State. It might not be amiss for some of our California breeders to Blip over to the Island continent, just to see how things are over there." Samuel McCaughey, of Melbourne, was reputed to be the owner of a million sheep, and one of the most influential wool producers in Australia. The pedigree published in New York, 1883. 17 pp text, with a fold-out pedigree of Ranzin 464. Oblong 12mo, orig. brown mat boards with gilt. "Compliments of W. G. Markham" on the front cover, black cloth spine. Slt. watermark on back board, otherwise pristine.

New York:. 1883-1889.. Hardcover. Very good overall. Two manuscript record books showing expenses for 'Australian Ventures', a company set up by W.G. Markham, James Sargent, and C.C. Puffer to buy American merino sheep and sell in Australia. Book one covers May 15, 1883 to May 25, 1889, and lists expenses for travel and sheep. Sample entries: paid J. A. Foote for 8 ewes, $240; J. B. Hamblin 6 ewes, $215; C.D. Lane 15 ewes, $650 etc.; Shipment of Ram and Ewes shipped July 28th 1883, $10,820. The second accounting book separates expenses by person, and by shipment for the same time period. Mr. Markham and his associates had quite a business going - he traveled to Australia and London, lobbied visited the Secretary of State F. T. Frelinghuysen and George Loring, Commissioner of Agriculture about a claim against the firm and so on. James Sargent was paid $30,000 on May 13, 1888. Other business contacts include A. M. Garland & E. Townsend. Merinos were sourced principally from western New York, Vermont and Michigan, but also from California. $250 paid for the purchase of "Hugo" , a ram owned by Peter Martin of East Rush, NY. Sheep were purchased from many breeders in Vermont including Rector Gage, L.P. Clark, E. E. Stickney, C. E. Holdredge, Rollin Lane and H. Robbins. They are all mentioned in the "Register of the Vermont Merino Sheep Breeders' Association, Volume 3" for 1887. Breeders in Michigan were also tapped - W. J. Lawrence, Wm. Radford and W. H. Fiske. W. G. Markham was heavily involved in the exportation of merinos to Australia. He convinced Australian wool growers that introducing American merinos into the Australia flock would increase their weight, and this was very successful. He was mentioned in many articles about Australian wool growing. Two 6 3/4 X 8 1/4" ledger books, red & black leather spines and corners, mottled paper boards, (1) 145 pp (partially unused), (2) 191 pp, rubbed at edges, slt. rubbed front cover, ruffled at head/foot of spines, interiors clean, bindings tight. A fascinating insight into the introduction of the American Merino flock into Australia.

        Modern Perspective Plates

No date. Ca. 1883.. 30 black and white plates, sheet size approximately 11 3/8 x 14 5/8 inches, loose in 15 1/4 x 11 3/4 inch cloth covered board portfolio with cloth ties. A scarce publication, the Plates portfolio is in very good condition (discolored streak to front of portfolio; only one of three tie clasps serviceable) while the plates themselves are, overall, in excellent condition with the slightest toning to edges, first plate has light edge wear. Thirty plates to illustrate the concepts outlined in William Ware?'s famous "Modern Perspective: A Treatise upon the Principles and Practice of Plane and Cylindrical Perspective," copyright 1882. In the preface Ware (of Columbia University) writes: "A new treatment of so old a theme would be uncalled for, did not even the elaborate treatises seem to be deficient in comprehensiveness and scientific simplicity, while the practical handbooks fail to make the reader acquainted with some methods that are found in experience to be among the most convenient and practical of all." He further observes "The plates that accompany the text have taken, altogether, quite as much time and labor in their preparation as the text itself..." .

1883. In Three Volumes. London: Chatto & Windus, 1883. 32 pp Vol I ads dated March 1883. Original blue-green cloth decorated in reddish-brown. First Edition of this novel about a man who valued his estate above his honor, and who accordingly tried to have his cake and eat it too... "He was luxurious and self-indulgent, and altogether indifferent to the opinion of those around him" (from the novel).~John Scarborough, owner of a large landed property in Hertfordshire, resented the restrictions of the law of entail [predetermined succession of estate]. He accordingly devised a scheme whereby he was able by a double marriage, one before and one after the birth of his eldest son, to declare him illegitimate or not, as the future might make desirable... [Gerould]~It is not hard to imagine the subterfuge and treachery this scheme creates between father, elder son and younger son.~MR. SCARBOROUGH'S FAMILY first appeared serially in "All The Year Round," running weekly from May 1882 to June 1883, during which span (December 1882) Trollope died; this three-decker was published posthumously in May 1883. As with most Victorian three-decker novels, it was priced at 31s. 6d. but was offered at a steep discount to the lending libraries, so that most people could not afford to buy it but would rather have to rent it.~This is a bright, near-fine set. There is, on the lower front cover of each volume, very faint evidence of the prior presence of library labels (like most copies. Otherwise the only flaws of note are a small scar on the Vol I spine, and the presence throughout the text of numerous ink-stamps of a Harrogate bookseller (most likely the original "lending library"). That said, the bindings are clean, the gilt is bright, and the volumes are quite free of wear -- the volumes have NOT been re-cased or re-backed, and the original endpapers remain intact. In all, rather remarkable condition for a novel that was produced for lending libraries to be rented out fortnightly and "read to death." Sadleir (Trollope) 66; Wolff did not have a copy.

Indicazione ms. all'ultima p.: quaderno delle sue casse porto Dseato (sic). C. Tall octavo, original embossed brown cloth, ornately stamped in gilt; 216 pages plus six-page index. Second Edition, Revised & Enlarged. Dr. Louis Lewin [1850-1929] was a German author of more than 200 major publications on the subject of pharmacology, including 12 books. He directed a private laboratory in Berlin and he was considered the leading toxicologist in Germany. He published the first methodical analysis of the Peyote cactus, a variant of which was named Anhalonium lewinii in his honor. His original categories were Inebriantia (inebriants: alcohol or ether); Exitantia (stimulants like Kaht or ampehtamines); Euphorica (euphoriants and narcotics, like heroin); Hypnotica (tranquilizers, such as Kava); Phantastica (hallucinogens or entheogens, like peyote or Ayahuasca).         Historia de Mexico

Victoriano Agueros y Comp, Mexico City 1883 - 5 volumes. 495 pages with frontispiece, six plates, plan and appendices; 536 pages with appendices and index; 567 pages with appendices and index; 675 pages with appendices and index; 840 pages with appendices, tables and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 7") bound in quarter calf with marbled boards and gilt lettering to spine. (Palau 4576) Second edition. Lucas Ignacio Alamán y Escalada Alamán studied at the Real Colegio de Minas de la Nueva España, in the Viceroyalty of New Spain (colonial México). He frequently traveled on his credentials as a scientist and diplomat, becoming one of the most educated men in Mexico. At the outset of the war for Mexican independence, in September 1810, Alamán is said to have been an eyewitness of the massacre of Spanish families in his home city of Guanajuato. This experience may have influenced his lifelong devotion to conservative politics and his nostalgia for monarchic rule for Mexico. For most of the 1840s, he devoted himself primarily to writing the history of Mexico from the perspective of a conservative. His three-volume work Disertaciones sobre la Historia de la Republica mexicana (Mexico, 1844¿1849) and his five-volume Historia de México, desde los primeros movimientos que prepararon su independencia en el año de 1808, hasta la época presente (Mexico, 1849¿1852), stand as the major intellectual productions of the Conservative Party in nineteenth-century Mexico, and the only histories produced by a Mexican author of his era to view the Spanish presence in his country favorably. Condition: Early owner's embossed stamps to title pages, moderate wear, some age toning, corners bumped and rubbed, book plates removed from front pastedowns, some chipping to edges else a good to very good set.
