        Felis Jaguarondi [Yaguaroundi ]

[London: Daniel Giraud Elliot for the subscribers, 1883. Hand-coloured lithograph by J.Smit after Joseph Wolf, printed by M. & N.Hanhart. A very fine image from 'the best animal painter who ever lived' (Sir Edwin Landseer). The Jaguarundi [puma yaguarondi] lives mainly in Mexico, Central America and South America. They are seen very infrequently in southern Texas, New Mexico and the Sonora Desert in Arizona. One of the most striking images from Elliot's magnificent work A Monograph of the Felidae or Family of Cats (London: 1878-1883) which described and pictured all the species of cats then known, and is still the most beautiful work on the subject. The work was prompted by a perceived need to resolve the confusion that had built up around the naming of the various species of Felidae , particularly amongst the smaller cats. Wolf worked from specimens provided by Elliot, who visited all the great museums and zoological societies on both sides of the Atlantic. This allowed Elliot to make a comparative study of skeletons and skins and reduce the number of apparently separate species by nearly a third. Joseph Wolf served an apprenticeship with a Koblentz firm of lithographers, and spent some time working in Leiden and Darmstadt, before moving to London in 1848. The quality of his images was recognized immediately and he was rarely without work, producing natural history pictures of the highest quality for the Zoological Society of London, Henry Dresser, George Gray and John Gould, amongst many others. Wolf's work for Elliot marks the high-point of his illustrative work and his images of the cats are considered by many to be his masterpieces. Cf. Nissen ZBI 1279; cf. Wood p.332.

        Life on The Mississippi

Boston: James R. Osgood, 1883 Illustrated with 316 images by John Harley, Edmund Henry Garrett, and A. B. Shute. First edition, first state - intermediate A, with the illustration of the author and an urn bearing his initials in flames on page 441, and with the caption "The St. Charles Hotel" on the illustration on page 443. Publisher's decorative brown cloth, with pictorial panels depicting the Mississippi River stamped in gilt to the front board and spine, decorative ruling and ornamentations stamped in black to the front board. About fine, with minor bumping to the corners, light rubbing to the spine ends, a very slight lean to the spine, bright gilt, fresh interior, sturdy binding. Overall, a beautiful, unsophisticated copy. BAL 3411. Life on the Mississippi is a semi-autobiographical text about the history of the Mississippi River and the author's adventures riding on a steamboat from St. Louis to New Orleans. While much of the information in this text is factual, many of the individual episodes were fabricated to varying degrees and are better considered tall tales than accurate documentation. For example, Twain provides an account of the origin of his pseudonym, which he claims he took from Captain Isaiah Sellers. While the explanation of "mark twain" as a riverman's phrase for water found to be two fathoms deep (12 feet) is undoubtedly correct, it is likely that the stories regarding Sellers are at least partially embellished. In addition to offering insight into the author's earlier life, Life on the Mississippi provides historical context on the industrialization of the United States in the second half of the 19th century; throughout the text, Twain discusses the competition of railroads along with the growing cities in the American Midwest and South.. Illus. by Harley, John; Garrett, Edmund Henry; Shute, A.B.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine.

The Hebrid Isles; wanderings in the Land of Lorne and the Outer Hebrides.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1883. Frontispiece illustration. 8vo., a particularly splendid example of a signed Cedric Chivers of binding with full painted cover or stylised thistles and seagulls over the sea with a rising sun, gilt tooling and mother of pearl inlay, all edges gilt. Spotting to title and frontispiece. A particularly fine example of a vellucent binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath, signed on the lower turnin. The painting on the binding is actually on yellow paper under transparent vellum rather than straight onto the vellum which you see with other painted vellum binding. A good Scottish prose poem to the beauties of the Hebrides. A contemporary review said: "in Mr. Buchanan's work we find short, terse sentences, vivid descriptions of loch and mountain, and bright narratives of adventure along the wild sea-coast of the Outer Hebrides".

        Blue-Headed Racket-Tailed Parrot] Prioniturus Discosurus

[London: by the Author, 1883. Hand-coloured lithograph, finished with gum arabic, after Gould and H.C.Richter, printed by Walter & Cohn. A fine image of two parrots from John Gould's magnificent folio work "The Birds of Asia." The intended geographical range of "The Birds of Asia" was enormous, and very much in keeping with the seemingly limitless self-belief of the 19th-century's best known ornithologist. In his all-encompassing work John Gould includes species from all corners of the eastern world, as Richard Bowdler Sharpe noted the work covers "Species from Palestine to the eastward, and from the Moluccas to the west." Gould chose to record the bird life from an area which, with the exception of the tropical areas of the American continent, includes the widest, and most colourful variety of bird life to be found anywhere in the world.         ALERIEL; OR, A VOYAGE TO OTHER WORLDS A TALE

London: Wyman & Sons,. 1883. original red cloth, front and rear panels ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, brown coated endpapers.. Touch of wear at head of spine panel and three corner tips, hint of. sunning to spine panel, a near fine, attractive copy. (#147348). First edition. The first of Lach-Szyrma's three works of interplanetary fiction, this being a revised and expanded version of his A VOICE FROM ANOTHER WORLD, published in London by James Parker & Co. in 1874. "The first two parts deal with communication with a Venusian who has spent some time incognito on Earth and a description of a utopian civilization on Venus obtained through a vision ... The third and fourth parts describe the adventures of some Venusians as they explore a civilized Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and some of their satellites." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 131. Later adventures of the Venusians are detailed in "Letters from the Planets," a series of nine stories by Lach-Szyrma published anonymously in CASSELL'S MAGAZINE from 1887 to 1893, and his novel, UNDER OTHER CONDITIONS, published in London by Adam and Charles Black in 1892. "The general point of this and the succeeding stories is acceptance, on a religious basis, of the plurality of worlds and the omnipresence of humanoid life." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1261. "These rather preachy stories concentrate on sightseeing and ethics, but fair-mindedly stress that other planetary conditions may lead to other customs. Lach-Szyrma could be considered a minor forerunner to C. S. Lewis." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. [684]. "Clearly influenced Wells." - Suvin, Victorian Science Fiction in the UK, p. 24. Locke, Voyages in Space 120. Lewis, Utopian Literature, p. 108.         Kannen (XXXV)

Berlin: Ernst Wasmuth, 1883. Colour-printed lithograph by Ernst Wasmuth. Very good condition. From "Griechische Keramik", Genick's superb work on Greek ceramics. The revival of interest in Greek ceramics was led by the travellers and cogniscenti who visited Greece and southern Italy in the mid to late-18th century. The Greek vase as an art form was first brought to the attention of an appreciative wider audience with the publication of a number of well-illustrated works on the collections of these dilletants. The most notable of this group was Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803), whose collection catalogue was published over a number of years starting in 1769. However, these early pioneers, working with a relatively small number of examples and using primitive techniques, were only able to begin to piece together the intricate story of this unique art form. It was not until a century later that art historians felt that they were understood the full scope and history of ancient Greek ceramics in general and the superb work produced using the red-figure technique in particular. The red-figure technique first came into use in about 530 B.C. and was the dominant type by about 500 B.C. With this technique, images are traced in outline and the background filled in with black glaze. Details are then drawn in by the painter with a black or brownish glaze. Red figure vases continued to be produced in Athens until about 320 B.C. Genick was one of the leading authorities of his day on the red-figure vases: an architect by training, he had a passionate love for and deep understanding of this great Athenian pottery. His study, brought to realization by Wasmuth's superb chromolithographs, illustrates for the first time these masterpieces of the potter's life-size art.

Second edition, greatly enlarged

Second edition, greatly enlarged from the first which contained only 156 pages. One of the first English books to illustrate geological strata by the use of a section. ?The convenient method of showing graphically a stratigraphical succession by a geological column was already in use at the end of the eighteenth century Westgarth Forster?s bookis notable for a very long column, some 51?2 feet long altogether, which is shown in portions and comprising a total thickness of strata of ?1345 yd. 0 ft., 10 in.? ? (Challinor, p. 93).The work is divided into three parts: on the strata of coal, on mineral veins in general, and on the discovery of mines, which includes lists of mines, lists of smelting houses, heights of principal mountains, etc.?Though the book was written when the science of geology was in its initial stage; when even people of education recognised no distinction between one kind of rock and another; when such terms as stratified and unstratified, aqueous and igneous, seldom appeared in print, and were scarcely ever heard; when the great works of Buckland, De la Beche, Phillips, Lyell, Murchison, Sedgwick, and other geologists had not yet appeared, the classification of the strata which it contains is the one still in use? (preface to the third edition of 1883).Hoover 318 (also the second edition).8vo, pp. xii, x, (11)-422, xvi (Appendix), (18) index and list of subscribers, 11 engraved plates numbered 3-10 and 12-14 (including 10 folding and 4 hand-coloured), folding letterpress table.         Amphoren (IV)
