Crimean Campaigning and Russian Imprisonment, by One of the Six Hundred

Edinburgh: Printed by Thomas Allan, 1883. First Edition. 8vo, 107 pp, in original maroon linen wrappers. Lettering on wrappers rubbed, moderate general handling wear, some pages with creasing or minor smudges; good to very good overall. Signed by Farquharson (who is otherwise uncredited in this edition) at the bottom of the Preface. Cross (Land of the Romanovs H33), offers this useful summary: "A private in the 4th Light Dragoons, Farquharson (b. 1831), arrived in the Crimea on 18 September 1854, took part in the Battle of the Alma on 20 September, and, memorably, was in the second line of the charge of the Light Brigade under Paget's command when he was captured by the Cossacks. He was initially maltreated but subsequently received much better treatment from Russian officers. He describes his march into captivity...his experiences being billeted on local families, his relations with fellow prisoners, and the beating he received on reaching prison. In August 1855 he was sent to Odessa and returned eventually to Balaclava on 27 October 1855." Most of Farquharson's account was first published in the Glasgow Evening Times in 1882; this is the first appearance in book form.

        Aut Caesar Aut Nihil

London Longmans, Green and Co 1883 - First edition in three volumes. The books are reasonably firmly bound in the publisher's yellow cloth, lettered and decorated in black, the corners and spine ends are slightly bumped and rubbed and the cloth is a little marked. The text blocks are slightly toned and foxed with a neatly written name and address to the front pastedown of volume one and a small ownership stamp to the front endpaper of each volume, they are cracked at points. Quite an uncommon Victorian triple decker and an entertaining novel, revolving around the assassination of Tsar Alexander II and the activities of Russian nihilists. [Attributes: First Edition]

Erscheinung / Nächtliche Figuren. Buntstiftzeichnung auf leichtem Zeichenkarton. 43,5 x 58 cm.

Savage Svanetia.

Bentley London 1883 - Two volumes 8vo., xii, 272; viii, 250pp., 6 pages ads end of volume ii, 8 wood-engraved plates, original green cloth gilt, map to upper covers, a very good copy. A beautiful copy of the first edition. Called "Savage" on account of the propensity of the locals to murder anybody they took a dislike to; blood feuds are still part of the way of life in the region. This casual attitude to life accounts for it being one of the least known parts of the Caucasus, although of great interest to the great powers being on the direct road from Russia to the Indian frontier. The English were particularly concerned about the railway from Poti to Baku. Czech, Asian p161. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LIFE AMONG THE PIUTES: Their Wrongs and Claims

Boston and New York: Cupples, Upham, & Co.; G. P. Putnam's Sons; the Author, 1883. 12mo (18.5 x 12 cm). 268 pp. Publisher's green cloth stamped in black with gilt spine. Front free endpaper with inscription. Extremities worn, spine slightly rolled, covers with some scuffs and small edge scrape to lower panel. Pages intermittently stained, smudged and creased at corner. Considered the first known female Native American autobiographer, Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins wrote the book with minor corrections by Mrs. Horace Mann, who notes Hopkin's "fervid eloquence" and "extraordinary colloquial command of the English language (Editor's Preface)." Hopkins recalls her band's first contact with the white man: the anticipation and the rebuff. Hopkins describes her people's good faith returned by dishonesty and violence. Hopkins addresses her audience, "Oh, for shame! You who are educated by a Christian government in the art of war; the practice of whose profession makes you natural enemies of the savages, so called by you. Yes, you, who call yourselves the great civilization... (p. 207)." Brumble, American Indian and Eskimo Autobiographies, 230. Ruoff, American Indian Literatures, 1990, p.3, 55.

Volume is in overall very good condition with mild wear on covers from rubbing and some fading, and gentle toning inside. Brown buckram covers feature title in gilt on front and decoration on back. Boards show minor warping, mild overall fading and darkening along edges, as well as faint white staining along upper edge of front and two damp stains along fore edge on back. Corners display strong bumping and severe rubbing with exposed boards and some chips. Spine has text in gilt, and displays moderate wear with a 4.5" chip along shoulder near head on front, and a 0.5" x 0.25" scuff in the center. Spine ends are severely rubbed and softened with chipping. Binding is secure with all pages and plates present. Handsome color decorated endpapers feature flowery designs and are mildly worn, with some toning and edge staining and foxing. Illustration plates are all in great condition with intact tissue guards and signed in the plate. Interior is gently age-toned with some faint shadowing of etchings on tissue guards. Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. Last pages exhibit persistent damp stains along fore edge, that are consistent with damp staining of cover on back. Text block edges have all edges gilt with slight scuffing along foot, and some fading. Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear. Approx. 130 pages. 14.25 x 18.5 inches. Preserved in a custom cloth clamshell case. Pamphlets folded as if for mailing. Minor soiling overall. First pamphlet with paper repair to lower right cover not affecting text and several small tears with professional repairs. Wraps. An exceedingly rare grouping of early telephone directories for the Long Island Telephone Company. The Long Island Telephone Company was incorporated after September 24, 1881 and by October 2, 1882 was operational having been granted a sub-license to operate in Long Island by the Metropolitan Telephone and Telegraph Company (who derived its authority directly from Alexander Graham Bell patent licenses in October 1, 1881). These directories and addenda date from November 15, 1882 to April 1, 1883. The company was absorbed (along with the New Jersey Telephone Company) into the New York and New Jersey Telephone Company by June 15, 1883 after operating for less than two years. We have been unable to trace any other examples from this company. We've traced only three multi-page directories in the 1880-1883 time period, each in a single instance (Newport and Suburban Telephonic Exchange. Newport, R.I., 1881; Subscribers of the Dayton Telephone Exchange, June, 1881; and American District Telegraph Co., Chicago Telephone Directory c1880). The first multi-page telephone directory (1878, New Haven, CT) sold for one hundred forty thousand at Christies, New York, in 2008.All directories from this time period are rare, and deserve careful consideration. They are valuable research tools, highlighting early technology adopters (both consumer and business) and can be an excellent source for scholars who trace the evolution of an early communication medium that had tremendous impacts. The fact that callers in the Long Island Telephone directories could connect with others in NYC, upstate NY and NJ is unusual. It could be considered a regional exchange in that sense, rather than simply a district as is the case with the first NYC central office system, the New Haven district and the Newport districts.A fine addition to any serious private or institutional collection. Schaim: die statisch-konstruktive Durchbildung der Kirche. - Otto Bartning (12. April 1883 in Karlsruhe - 20.

Poissy, 1883. 3 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Fine. Provenance: Dr. Max Thorek, with his collector's stamp. 3 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. To His American Dealer Knoedler, with a Sketch of Poissy. A fine letter to the New York dealer, [Roland?] Knoedler, with sketch in purple ink at the head of the page, of the village of Poissy (Meissonier's adopted home) and the Possy bridge. Meissonier writes: " ... You certainly won't have my painting "de la rose" this season. I'd like to show it at the Salon, and will do my best to finish it on time, but I'm afraid that I'll be too late ... I should love to be able to believe that this will be my most important painting, and I would be much saddened if it were to leave France without having been shown ... I shall not inform you of the unfortunate events of our poor country -- the death of Gambetta affected me deeply, and what's going on now saps my morale as a republican and a patriot -- but i don't want to bother you with my dark thoughts ... Our friend Knight is working also for the Salon and I like his painting very much ... So, my dear Monsieur Knoedler, the school of Poissy is still a famous school ... and now I bid you farewell for the moment, and send you my best wishes across the ocean ... "

        Treasure Island

London: Cassell & Company, 1883. First edition, mixed issue points. October ads (5R 1083). Frontispiece map in 3 colors. viii, 292, [8 ad] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Original green cloth, spine lettered gilt, black endpapers. Some foxing to edges of text block. Recased with highest quality conservation repairs to inner hinges. Very good plus. In cloth chemise and quarter morocco slipcase by James MacDonald of New York. First edition, mixed issue points. October ads (5R 1083). Frontispiece map in 3 colors. viii, 292, [8 ad] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The enduring children's classic adventure story. Who has not been both scared and enthralled by Blind Pew and the rascally Long John Silver and his Parrot with his cry of "Pieces of Eight" and identified with brave, innocent, young Jim Hawkins? It is the all-time archetypal pirate story, and although consciously and unconsciously derivative, it has all the classic elements of the genre. Some of the characters are based on life and such episodes as Jim overhearing the mutiny plot whilst in a barrel, however unlikely it seems, was indeed based on an actual event involving Stevenson's father. Originally printed in an edition of 2000 copies, the publisher bound the sheets in small batches. The first binding was of 750 copies issued on November 14; however so great was the demand that within a matter of just over three weeks all 2000 copies were bound and issued, the differences between the various bindings is basically one of colour. The only other difference of significance is that of the advertisements. Other points are mentioned but without recourse to a large number of copies it is impossible to place any serious implications on them. For instance in Beinecke's preferred copy, page 127 has a dropped "7", in his description of further copies the "7", as in this copy, has been inserted but it appears impossible to say how and when this happened. Another "point" is the non-capitalization of "Dead Man's Chest", but none of the copies we have examined of the various bindings have been capitalized. (Dead Man's Chest is an islet and it is difficult to know why this was missed when proofs were read.) Other points include the numbering of page 83 (in this copy "8" is missing); and no full-stop on line 20 page 178. The hesitant issuing of this book is probably due to the lack of enthusiasm shown when serialized in 1881 but on the book appearing, a critic hailed it as the best adventure story in print, the rest is history. Beinecke, 241; Prideaux 11; Gumuchian 5443; Grolier 48; Morgan Library, Early Children's Books and Their Illustration, 206; Osborne Collection II, p. 1030. Provenance: H. Morley Fletcher (bookplate)

Comments on another Germanic mythological cycle and on the origin of Freyja: "I return with thanks your poem on Freyja's Roaming Guest for Odur, which I have read with much pleasure. I think Aurora, belonging to another cycle of mythology, should be replaced by Dawn. The East being, in Germanic love, the quarter where life awakes, as typified by the goddess Ostara, would perhaps better be called the 'glowing', instead of the 'slumb[e]rous' [.]". - On stationery with printed address. - Quite spotty and some damage to upper corner of fol. 2 (slightly touching text).
