LITTLE ANN

London: Routledge, no date [1883] - Very good (pale foxing throughout; rubbing to points and lower edges) in a Good dust-wrapper, with a long, closed tear to the back panel and loss to the spine (about two-fifths) and lower edge. The wrapper (tissue-thin buff paper printed to the front as per the book's upper board) is remarkably clean and may owe this and, in fact, its very survival, to the presence of a second, thicker, plain buff jacket (chipped) which appears to be of a similar vintage and which we suspect was added by the original purchaser of the book. Whatever the story, the only other example of the jacket we could locate was that on a dedication copy that sold for $8,125 ten years ago at Christie's, New York. Verklaringe van verscheyden kunst-rijcke wercken en hare beweginghe, door orlogie-werck ghedreven, Alles te sien in 't Oude Doolhof tot Amsterdam, op de hoeck van de Loyers-gracht.Amsterdam, Tymen Houthaeck, 1648. Small 4to. With engraved title-page with vignette showing a labyrinth, 1 folding engraved plate, 1 full-page engraved plate by P. Holsteyn after A. Vinckenbrinck and 3 engravings in text. Modern marbled wrappers.

      - Franken 1375 (note); Meijer, "Het oude doolhof te Amsterdam", in: Oud Holland vol. 1 (1883), pp. 119-135; Spies, De Amsterdamse doolhoven, pp. 70-71. Extremely rare booklet (only one other copy could be traced), the first edition with a description by Jan Vos of a garden, or amusement park, called 'Oude Doolhof' (Old Labyrinth or maze), published as a souvenir or 'flyer'. This first Doolhof, called the 'Oude Doolhof', was founded at the Looiersgracht at Amsterdam by the wine merchant and inn-keeper Vincent Jacobsz. Coster before 1625. In fact it was a kind of combination of a seventeenth-century 'Madame Tussauds' and an amusement park. The garden was composed of a labyrinth in which fountains and automata were displayed, showing historical & biblical figures and spectacles. The illustrations, according to Franken implicitly after C. van de Passe (who lived also at the Looiersgracht at the time), show the sights and spectacles of this labyrinth. The lower corner of the title-page and the first plate gone. Very good copy of this rare souvenir. [Attributes: First Edition]

Safford's Directory of Wholesale Dealers : Manufacturers and Jobbers of Jewelry, Watches, Clocks, Diamonds and Precious Stones, Silver and Silver-Plated Ware, etc. in the United States

New York: D. L. Safford July 1883. First Edition. [2], 166 pages plus extra bound in sheets for notes. 4 x 6 1/2 inches. Publisher's stiff cloth wrappers, gilt. Black and white as well as one four page chromolithographed advertisement in the middle. Minor wear to the extremities, an excellent example. Stiff wraps. The directory covers the entire United States, with New York well represented but entries from as far away as San Francisco. We find full page advertisements in b&w for many firms, and a wonderful four page chromolithographed advertisement for Keller & Untermeyer, manufacturers of watch cases with raised Gold Ornaments. The frontispiece is an image of the front of the Safford building, "The Jewelers' Mercantile Agency", noting it was established in 1873."The Jewelers' Circular, Volume 82, Issue 2, 1921" in reviewing a Safford employee's history, notes that the Jewelers' Mercantile Agency President was De Lloyd Safford and that the Agency was later taken over by the New York Jewelers' Board of Trade. Very rare - we cannot find any examples of this directory (or any other Safford Directory) at auction, online, or in OCLC.A scarce and interesting survival given the unusual topic area. While not strictly a trade catalogue, we checked and found no entry in Romaine. Near Fine.

Manchester John Heywood 1883 - 8vo, pp [4], 119, [1], original sage green cloth decorated in blind and lettered in gilt, lower board sliightly creased in centre, else a fine copy, FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, 'Wilfred Hargrave from his friend Edward C. April 1883.' Also personalised with the initialls 'W.H.' on the imprint leaf verso in the same hand. The first part of four that would eventually form Carpener's most enduring and popular philosophical testament, sometimes described as a prose poem. For the following twenty years Carpenter coninued expanding it, its socialism as well as radical revaluation of Victorian moral values appealing to a whole generation of English intellectuals. It is likely that the recipient of this copy, Wilfred Hargrave, was one of Carpenter's circle of Sheffield friends from before he moved out to foudn the Millthorpe community; other presentations to him have come on the market, and a photograph of him can be found in the Sheffield archive. Acording to Carpenter's biographer Tsuzki only 500 copies of the first edition were printed of which 100 remained unsold after 2 years. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Crimean Campaigning and Russian Imprisonment, by One of the Six Hundred

Edinburgh: Printed by Thomas Allan, 1883. First Edition. 8vo, 107 pp, in original maroon linen wrappers. Lettering on wrappers rubbed, moderate general handling wear, some pages with creasing or minor smudges; good to very good overall. Signed by Farquharson (who is otherwise uncredited in this edition) at the bottom of the Preface. Cross (Land of the Romanovs H33), offers this useful summary: "A private in the 4th Light Dragoons, Farquharson (b. 1831), arrived in the Crimea on 18 September 1854, took part in the Battle of the Alma on 20 September, and, memorably, was in the second line of the charge of the Light Brigade under Paget's command when he was captured by the Cossacks. He was initially maltreated but subsequently received much better treatment from Russian officers. He describes his march into captivity...his experiences being billeted on local families, his relations with fellow prisoners, and the beating he received on reaching prison. In August 1855 he was sent to Odessa and returned eventually to Balaclava on 27 October 1855." Most of Farquharson's account was first published in the Glasgow Evening Times in 1882; this is the first appearance in book form.

        Stamboul. Moeurs et Costumes

Canson, Paris 1883 - (24 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches). Mounted on guards throughout. Letterpress title printed in red and black, letterpress introduction leaf and letterpress list of plates. Tinted lithographic frontispiece printed by Lemercier of Paris, 28 chromolithographic plates, trimmed to the edge of the image and mounted on thick paper with imprints, as issued, all by Lemercier of Paris after Preziosi. Bound to style in full period brown morocco, covers elaborately bordered in gilt, spine gilt with raised bands, marbled endpapers, gilt edges Lively lithographs by one of the best known of the artists living and working in Istanbul in the mid-19th century: one of 500 numbered copies. The son of Count Gio Francois Preziosi of Malta, Amadeo initially studied the law before turning to painting. After studying under Giuseppe Hyzler, Perziosi subsequently completed his art education at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. He moved to Constantinople in 1842, fell in love with the city, and was able to make a living painting the places and people that surrounded him. It is noted in the Atabey catalogue that "Preziosi was well-known . His studio is mentioned in Murray's guidebooks for 1854 and 1871. By that time he had become an institution in the city. He produced views of the city, and genre and costume drawings" ( The Ottoman World p.535). His paintings sold well to both the affluent local and the Grand Tourist, and his reputation was such that also served as a court painter to Sultan Abdul Hamid II. With his published work, Preziosi was offered the opportunity to share his love of his adopted home city with a wider public: he here offers a catalogue of daily life in the city; an aide-memoire and a momento. The work offers a real cross-section of humanity, ranging from a street performance by a family of gypsies and their bear, to street vendors, to established shopkeepers of various kinds, to military and religious figures, to high-class Turkish ladies, to a powerful eunuch of the Sultan's seraglio. But behind the main figures, can be glimpsed locations and small incidents that are what gives the city its unique quality: from the Süleymaniye Mosque to the Bosphorus, from the shops in the alley-ways, the coffee houses, to the courtyard of the sultan. First published in 1858, the present re-issue, limited to 500 numbered copies, was published under the direction of the Encyclopédie des Arts Décoratifs de L'Orient. Colas 2423; Blackmer 1353 (1865 edition); Atabey 999 (1861 edition). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

On January 26, 1885, the rebels broke into the city killing Gordon and the other defenders two days before British relief forces arrived. A few small puncture holes, otherwise fine condition.

On the Indigenous People of the Amur Region].

Imper. Akad. Nauk Skt. Peterburg 1899 1903 1883 - Three volumes, 4to. (32.5 x 25 cm). XII, 323 pp., with colour lithopraph map, 9 plates; XX, 314 pp. with 36 plates, including 11 in colour; XVII, 145 pp., with 25 plates, including 1 in colour, all plates engraved after Nikolay Dmitriev-Orenburgskiy. Contemporary green cloth over paper boards, original wrappers pasted on upper boards; slightly rubbed and spotted. Fresh example of this uncommon work containing extensive research into the ethnography of the indigenous peoples of Eastern Siberia. Richly illustrated, it is the first work to look in detail at the ethnic composition of the Amur population and scientifically describe the differences in appearance, culture and language of the different peoples of the region. Leopold Schrenck (1826 - 1894), a geographer and ethnographer of Baltic German origin, was a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences from 1865. Between 1854 and 1856 he headed a scientific expedition to Amur and Sakhalin. The materials he collected during this trip formed the basis of his several scientific works, the earliest published in German under the title Reisen und Forschungen im Amur-Lande (in 4 vols., St. Petersburg, 1858-1900). The present Russian work is a truly unique record of a culture that had already started to disappear by the time of Schrenck's expedition, as a result of Russia's active colonisation of the region. Schrenck supports his own observations with extensive material from earlier research, such as that of Fischer, Müller and Georgi. Schrenck captures every aspect of life among the Amur peoples – their language, costumes, culture, hunting and trade methods, and their religious practices and beliefs. He draws comparisons between ?????? [Giliaki], ???? [Ainy], ??????? [Tungusy] and other peoples populating the region. Importantly, Schrenck also looks at the historic Chinese, Japanese and Russian influences on the region. The third volume of the work, concerning religious beliefs and ceremonies, was published after Schrenck's death based on his notes and drafts from the expedition. The Amur region is situated in the south west of Russia and shares a border with China in the South. The region was in fact part of China until 1858, when it was passed to the Russian Empire as a result of Aigunskiy agreement between the two countries. Rare on the market: we could not trace any copy offered at auction in the past 30 years. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Savage Svanetia.

Bentley London 1883 - Two volumes 8vo., xii, 272; viii, 250pp., 6 pages ads end of volume ii, 8 wood-engraved plates, original green cloth gilt, map to upper covers, a very good copy. A beautiful copy of the first edition. Called "Savage" on account of the propensity of the locals to murder anybody they took a dislike to; blood feuds are still part of the way of life in the region. This casual attitude to life accounts for it being one of the least known parts of the Caucasus, although of great interest to the great powers being on the direct road from Russia to the Indian frontier. The English were particularly concerned about the railway from Poti to Baku. Czech, Asian p161. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LIFE AMONG THE PIUTES: Their Wrongs and Claims

Boston and New York: Cupples, Upham, & Co.; G. P. Putnam's Sons; the Author, 1883. 12mo (18.5 x 12 cm). 268 pp. Publisher's green cloth stamped in black with gilt spine. Front free endpaper with inscription. Extremities worn, spine slightly rolled, covers with some scuffs and small edge scrape to lower panel. Pages intermittently stained, smudged and creased at corner. Considered the first known female Native American autobiographer, Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins wrote the book with minor corrections by Mrs. Horace Mann, who notes Hopkin's "fervid eloquence" and "extraordinary colloquial command of the English language (Editor's Preface)." Hopkins recalls her band's first contact with the white man: the anticipation and the rebuff. Hopkins describes her people's good faith returned by dishonesty and violence. Hopkins addresses her audience, "Oh, for shame! You who are educated by a Christian government in the art of war; the practice of whose profession makes you natural enemies of the savages, so called by you. Yes, you, who call yourselves the great civilization... (p. 207)." Brumble, American Indian and Eskimo Autobiographies, 230. Ruoff, American Indian Literatures, 1990, p.3, 55.
