[Globe] Smith Charles
C. Smith and Son, 1880. A scarce and very handsome 12 inch globe. printed in multiple colours, this richly detailed globe, shows all the continents & countries as they were at the time and also indicates all the major ocean currents, connecting currents and the Antarctic & South East Trade Wind Drifts. Also with an analemma showing the declination of the sun for every day of the year and the Equation of Time. Total height approx. 19 and a half inches, on its original stand of a turned mahogany column with a trefoil base resting on bun feet, with a graduated brass meridian marked out in degrees of longitude. The globe is made of 12 hand-coloured copper engraved gores on solid core. Very well preserved, uncommonly such. The glove bright and fresh, the original stand in excellent condition as well. An uncommonly handsome and well preserved example of a scarce Charles Smith Globe. Charles Smith was a noted Stationer, map and globe-seller in London from about 1800. Between 1827 and 1852 the business was carried on by Charles Smith & Son, and from 1853 onward, by William Smith. Smith and Sons produced a vast number of well engraved maps and several fine atlases. His globes and maps are very distinctive, characterized by their lucid, fine engraving and vibrant colour washes that combine to make them both extremely attractive and very informative.

WALLACE, Alfred Russel
Macmillan and Co, London, 1880. xvii, [3], 526 p. 24 cm. Frontispiece in partial colour, as well as 25 other maps and diagrams in b&w or sepia. Green cloth hardcover with gold and black impressing. Spine ends a little softened, corners bumped, hinges repaired internally, small label at top of front pastedown. Occasional foxing or staining. A complete book in its original binding. Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 – 1913) was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, and biologist, known for independently conceiving, apart from Darwin, the theory of evolution through natural selection. Wallace did extensive fieldwork, first in the Amazon River basin and then in the Malay Archipelago, where he identified the faunal divide now termed the Wallace Line. Island Life has long been considered one of his most important works. In it he studies the influence of the glacial epochs on the distribution patterns of organisms and the characteristics of island biogeography. The book includes history’s first theory of continental glaciation based on a combination of geographical and astronomical causes, a discussion of island classification, and a survey of worldwide island faunas and floras. Anticipating our present concern with both endangered species and vanishing environments, Wallace's ecological studies helped substantiate evolution. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Wallace, Alfred Russel
Macmillan and Co., London. This library rebind in brown buckram boards with new white endpapers has preserved the original 1880 Macmillan text block, complete, in firm condition. But the librarians of the Steenbock Memorial Library, University of Wisconsin - Madison, were certainly fastidious in crossing out their previous ownership stampings to half-title and to all page edges, as well as stamping "Discard" to front pastedown. Manila card holder also intact to rear pastedown. There are some scattered margin marks in pencil (quite minimal) and a few small tears to top page edges have been repaired with pieces of "Scotch tape," which fortunately have not browned excessively. Charming full-color frontispiece map; all maps complete. This copy would grade "very good" for tight, square internal condition were it not for the standard ex-college-library trappings. Zoology, geology, evolution & distribution of species. 526 pp. including index followed by 2 pp. publisher's ads. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Attrib. Ernest Albert Waterlow RA PRWS (1850-1919)
1880 - Attrib. Ernest Albert Waterlow RA PRWS (1850-1919) - Original 1880 Oil. A beautiful and very well executed woodland landscape scene with figures and dogs, excellently presented in a fantastic period gilt frame with acanthus leaf detail to the corners and scrolling scalloped detail. Monogrammed "EAW" and dated in red to the lower right. We have attributed this painting to Ernest Albert Waterlow RA PRWS (1850-1919) because we believe the monogram to be him after looking at other comparisons, and there are significant similarities in the handling of the paint and the style used. However, we do not have any provenance for this painting, thus we cannot list it as by Waterlow with absolute certainty. Signed and dated. On canvas. Condition is typical for a painting of this age, with some areas of light surface dirt and discolouration to the varnish, some fine passages of old craquelure, but the paint layer is stable. There are a few tiny areas of paint loss to the lower right near the signature. Inspection under UV light shows an area of restoration to the centre of the trees, with a repair patch to the reverse of the canvas. The frame has some small areas of loss to the decoration, mainly on the back edge. Size: Large (30-60cm) Framed: Yes Style: Realism Weight: 9000.00g [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Whitney, J.D. and Lesquereux, Leo.
Harvard University Press, John Wilson and Son. Cambridge, Mass., two large quartos (10 by 12 inches). Vol. I: xvi, 569 p., 24 plates and map pocket containing 3 folding sheets. Vol. II: Fossil plants: vi, 62 p. and 10 double-page plates of fossils (1878); Climatic changes: xiv, [2], 394 p. (1880-1882). ***CONTENT: These volumes describe the geology, ore and placer deposits, mining practices and fossils of some of the most renowned gold regions of California. Volume one begins with an overview of the geology of the Sierra Nevada, and then presents detailed descriptions of gold-bearing gravel deposits and hydraulic mining operations in a host of areas: Placer, El Dorado, Yuba, Sierra, Butte, Nevada, Amador, Calaveras, Mariposa and Tuolumne Counties; north of the American River (Grass Valley, Nevada City, Smartsville, etc.); the Yuba River region; and elsewhere. Fossil plants and animals are then described, including the infamous "Calaveras skull", a supposed Pliocene human fossil now determined to be a much more recent 'planted' remain. Three lengthy appendices provide further details on gold origin, occurrences, mines, etc. This volume is well illustrated by splendid plates and maps, including 3 heliotype photos by Carleton Watkins. Lesquereux's paper in volume two (with 10 tinted plates) describes exquisite Tertiary fossil leaves from fine-grained beds along the western slopes of the Sierras. Whitney's report in the same volume describes the glacial and surficial geology of the Pacific Coast, the Sierras, Cordilleras, and Great Basin, and presents a lengthy discussion of cl … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Griffith and Farran,, 1880. Reminiscences of Boer Life. Octavo. Original green diagonal-fine-ribbed cloth over bevelled boards, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board in gilt and black, blind frame to rear, brown coated endpapers, top and fore edge untrimmed. Folding map frontispiece. Extremities lightly rubbed, a few small pale markings to boards, mild foxing to fore edge and advertisements, a few trivial spots to title page and text. An excellent copy. First edition of this "rather interesting account of a tour throughout South Africa from march to October 1878. The author, who was in search of health, started from Pietermaritzburg, and enjoyed some good shooting en route; amongst other places visited were Spitzkop and Lydenberg, and there is an excellent description of these goldfields at this period, together with notes on the Boers and natives" (Mendelssohn), as well as the Sekukuni campaigns. The game he hunted included springbok, blessbox, klipspringer, reedbuck, wildebeest, lion, buffalo, and giraffe. A handsome copy of this "well-written work that ably describes the terrain [and] climate and encounters with native tribes and wild beasts" (Czech). The author (c.1856-1894) is recorded as an officer in the Royal Perthshire Militia (gazetted lieutenant 1874).

Stored loosely in contemp. red half cloth portfolio with giltstamped cover title "Le Nouvel Opera de Paris | Bronzes" and four ties. First edition. - Plate volumes of the rare luxury work on the "Opéra Garnier", the neo-Baroque Parisian opera house completed in 1875, one of the most admired buildings of its time. The plates depict plans, cross-sections and elevations of the building, engraved in great detail after drawings by Duchamp, Jasson, Riquois and others. The beautiful chromolithographs (including the famous staircase) convey a vivid impression of the luxury and splendor of the interior decoration. Garnier's name became instantly famous when in 1861 he was unanimously awarded the first prize for his competition design for the new opera. His opera house, which cost the then unheard-of sum of 50 million francs, still constitutes the unsurpassed centerpiece of modern Parisian architecture (cf. Thieme/B.). To the plates were added four volumes of photographs by Durandelle and Garnier's monographic text volume (not present here). - Occasionally slightly rubbed; some 10 plates with insignificant defects to edges.
